@Niamhflower,
Obvious!y the situation is bad. It's dire! It is not however beyond salvation.
What is needed is for people to face realities and admit that the rampant abuse of this planet is destroying it more each day. That we as a people, in general, have become so enamored of plastics that many have lost the basic ability of surviving day to day without them, is clearly an issue which must be addressed.
Plastics are everywhere. They show up in packaging, communication devices (cellphones, radios, televisions, computers), household appliances, vehicles, clothing...literally everywhere. People need to learn to live without them or else face an unpleasant ending to want is currently known as life.
It can be done. Return to use of glass for bottles and jars instead of plastic. Use cloth bags instead of plastic (or paper) for carrying groceries and other items. Buy and wear clothing made of natural materials with metal fasteners. Abandon the so-called fleece items. Many are not fleece from animals; but, rather they are made of/with microfibers which are tiny bits of plastic. Those bits of plastic end up in the waters of the planet and are ingested by creatures living there and contributing to their deaths. The death of these creatures causes changes in the oceans themselves, which in turn causes change elsewhere.
As long as people are still here, there is still hope for saving the oceans, people just need to want it enough to alter their way of thinking and doing things.
