Well since I'm old a lot of this has been forgotten. I listen to classical more than pop music so favorite composition is Richard Wagner's Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde. Favorite song is Ave Maria. But in keeping with the spirit of more contemorary music although some of this you'll regard as old also favorite group was the Kingston Trio. Lots of good songs there. Favorite male singer Frank Sinatra. I sing myself (karaoke which many would not dignify as singing) and my favorite song to sing is Willie Nelson's Always on my mind. Favorite female singer Helen Reddy. Can't really pick an album as I tend to like individual songs much more than collections.

That's one of my favorites too. In fact, Eva Cassidy does a very slow and haunting rendition of it that I love almost as much as the original.

I got to see Eva once in DC with Danny Gatton on guitar. She really thrilled me and remains one of my fave female singers...R.I.P. Eva...

i am not sure if i should have posted this as a poll but here goes.
as a newbie here i was wondering about the people who post on this site. to me there is nothing more revealing than someone's musical tastes and i am always interested in that. so if you have the time, please answer the following questions and maybe we can learn more about each other. also, feel free to add any questions that you think apply to this category and i might have left out.

1. what was the first single you ever owned?
2. what was the first album/cd you ever owned?
3. favorite band/musical group of all time?
4. favorite male singer?
5. favorite female singer?
6. first concert you ever saw/ who, where, and when?
7. best concert you ever saw?
8. band/musical act that you never got to see live and wish you had.
9. favorite song of all time?
10. favorite album/cd of all time?

thanks for your time.

1. can't remember
2. Thriller (like Gargamel, I was very young)
3. hard to say... I was a big Nirvana fan, also liked Live, currently I like Destiny's child and Evanessence, no wait, maybe it's the Dixie Chicks
4. Ray Charles
5. Nina Simone or Eva Cassidy or Cesaria Evora
6. Cindy Lauper, Melbourne FL, 198?
7. Lyle Lovett at Wolftrap, opened with Eva Cassidy (she was the best)
8. Ray Charles -- I heard he put on an awesome show
9. Very tough one -- I'll go with 'Just be Good to Me' SOS band
10. Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley

Thanks for this thread. Sadly, music isn't as big a part of my life anymore and it's nice to think about music that I have loved.

1. Can't remember exactly <another relatively old feller here>, but undoubtedly sumpin' by the Beatles.

2. My younger brother and I initially used to get albums from our parents that were gifts to both of us to share. The first one of these was the Beatles, "Revolver".

3. The Beatles <surprise, surprise>.

4. Favorite solo male singer would be Van Morrison.

5. Favorite solo female singer would be Joni Mitchell.

6. I believe it was Rod Stewart and the Faces (on an all-day festival type bill with several other artists) in 1972.

7. Very, very difficult to pick the "best" of all time, but the Rolling Stones in 1999, the Police in 1983, Neil Young in 1983 and Jethro Tull in 1973 would easily make my top 4.

8. The Beatles, hands-down.

9. Wow. The toughest question of all, no doubt. But if pressed for one song only on a deserted island, I guess it would be "Hey Jude".

10. Ditto for this one, but I suppose I'd pick the Beatles' "White Album".

Great questionnaire!

WOW!

this is so great. i love reading all of your answers. it's even greater to see that i am not the only old poster here. it's easy to tell from the answers that this place covers a lot of ground musically and chronologically. and to find other big eva cassidy fans is the BEST. i have all of her stuff and can't believe that panzade got to see her live. i envy you. i am one of those people who only discovered her after she tragically died so young.

It's dangerous to crap and hiccup at the same time.

A friend of mine died that way.

I'd be careful if I were you.

exactly, plainoldme. guess it won't hurt reveal my age since there seem to be many compadres on here. though, just because i made up the questionnaire doesn't mean i can actually answer it.

1. what was the first single you ever owned?
ironically it was called "the end" by earl grant 1958. it was actually just the beginning of a life-long obsession.

2.what was the first album/cd you ever owned?
in the fifties it was all about the singles, but i got an everly brothers album
with them on a motorcycle (might have been their first) as a present. i still have it somewhere.

3. favorite band/musical group of all time?
beatles/bruce springsteen and the e street band. too many others come in #2.

4. favorite male singer?
for voice alone it has to be van (the man) morrison.

5. favorite female singer?
aretha franklin, joni mitchell, janis joplin, bonnie raitt. can't choose.

6. first concert you ever saw/ who, where, and when?
alan freed's big beat / spring 1958/nyc with jerry lee louis, chuck berry and buddy holly and the crickets on the bill.

7. best concert you ever saw?
beatles at carnegie hall february 12, 1964/bruce springsteen at the bottom line,NYC august 1975

8. band/musical act that you never got to see live and wish you had.
the one i missed was elvis. i am still kicking myself for that one
.
9. favorite song of all time?
in my life (the beatles)/new york city serenade, thunder road (bruce springsteen). the list for 2nd place would be endless.

10. favorite album/cd of all time?
meet the beatles. it changed all of our lives forever back then.
