"That that is is that that is not is not that is it is that it"
What is this???
hey, Keen. Welcome to A2K. That is simply a group of sentences that needs proper punctuation to make sense.
That that is, is. That that is not, is not. Is not that it? It is.
Oh thanx.
But I think what I typed matches with:
"That, that is, is. that, that is not, is not. that is it. is that it?"
You're right, Keen, but you just figured out your own riddle.
Try this one:
The boss said the foreman is a fool.
By using punctuation, you can change this to several meanings. It's all in the name of communication.
Hi Letty,
thanx for ur encouragement.
I could do ur riddle as follows:....is this correct?
The boss said, the foreman is a fool.
The boss said the foreman, is a fool.
And....I also heard one in my school:
Hang him not, save him.
Hang him, not save him.
You know, Keen. It's fun working with students who are eager to solve puzzles. That's what education is, you know-- big old puzzles. lol.
Clue for the boss thing. Use quotation marks, and see what you come up with.
Also, try the semi colon for your" hang him" example.
Back later to give you some more brain teasers. Hang around and learn with fun at A2K.
Hi Letty,
The boss said, 'the foreman is a fool'.
The boss said the foreman, 'is a fool'.
.....any other meanings???
That's good, Keen. You should use double quotes, however, and remember, in the second example, the foreman is talking.
Soooooo. We have:
The boss said "that" the foreman is a fool. (no punctuation needed)
The boss said, "The foreman is a fool."
"The boss, said the foreman, is a fool." I need to check this one myself, as I am not certain if double quotes should come after "boss" and before "is".
What do you think?
There is also a cute one that must be done orally involving spelling and pronunciation. Ask a friend, "How do you pronounce......."; then spell it.
MacDougal
MacDuff
MacHinery.
The third is, of course, pronounced machinery. heh! heh!
When one puts the accent on the wrong syllable, it produces all kinds of weird responses. So-met-i-mes.
that that is is that that is not is not that that is is not that that is not that thatt is not is not thatt that is is that not it it is.
Thats the way i heard it when the Jesuits tried to make us understand that punctuation is not merely a calligraphic flourish.
farmerman, I love the expression "....calligraphic flourish..."
Is this correct punctuation?
that, that is, is. that, that is not, is not. that, that is, is not that? that is not that. that is not is, not that. that is, is that not it? it is.
