It needs to end in "jpg" or "gif" or something like that. You don't want the url for the page, you want the url for the image.

Ending in "ujzl", it's not gonna work.

If you have a long url ending in "jpg" or "gif", just don't convert it to tinyurl. No need for it, and it won't work.

That image ends in jpg.

http://www.bus.miami.edu/~ldouglas/rose/GramensChinese1a.JPG

Don't convert anything to tinyurl, just use that url, ending in jpg.

Here's the whole image -- I put the above url between "img" brackets (click "quote" to see the code)

I did. That's the second one.

Url for the first:

http://www.bus.miami.edu/~ldouglas/rose/GramensChinese1a.JPG

Url for the second:

http://www.bus.miami.edu/~ldouglas/rose/GramensChinese1a.JPG

OK, I read that whole page and I think I understand what's going on, somewhat.

No matter what carmel did, it is the same image url. What you guys need to do to disguise the image url is download the image, then upload it to another venue -- the gallery here would have worked, but it's out of commission right now.

So use Raven's Realm or make another MSN group for the purpose. Download the image. Re-name it. Then upload the re-named image and link from the Raven's Realm.

I am using a Mac, so it might be different with Windows. When I do quote, the code for carmel's photo is:

http://tinyurl.com/v2om

But when I do control + click, then Open Image In a New Window -- which is how I get image urls with my Mac -- the url for carmel's photo is still the same as the first. It basically instantly converts from the tinyurl to the miami site, and I assume something similar must happen with the code. When I do control + click, then Open Image In a New Window for carmel's photo it's still:

http://www.bus.miami.edu/~ldouglas/rose/GramensChinese1a.JPG

So, this is more complicated than I thought at first, but this still doesn't completely hide the origin -- definitely not for Mac, I don't know for windows.

If you want me to pursue simply how to make a tinyurl work, I'll read carmel's link, but it's not something i know offhand.

This is useful for Don to figure how to do this - and another transitional site, like a2k's gallery is when is is active, is, I think the answer. I haven't tried it, but understand Irfan.com is such a site.

To back up, one can get a photo from an online site - or your own scanning , perhaps, cut down to posting size in various ways. If it is 1 mb it is too big. So.. one goes to an msn site of a friend, or yourself, or to a place like Irfan, or to the a2k gallery, which is now in a rest phase, in order to get it under, what, 100 something kb, AND with a gif or jpeg at the end.

However, on that travel 'game' thread, re urls - I would venture to say the people who are following that don't cheat, they enjoy figuring it out without cheating.. (I participate from time to time, and 'know' most of the people, including Don.)

Note - my main computer is an old Imac, but I have posted photos from my work pc as well.

Anyway, hang in there, Don, we'll all figure this out. Maybe CI or Walter can help if Soz and I can't.

I'd mentioned already that it might be a Mac thing, Don, fealola confirms that in a few posts on the second page of the thread you linked to, starting here:

http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=441377#441377

fealola wrote:
I'm on Mac. I just tried it and got the url by choosing open image in new window! Same url.

fealola wrote:
Thanks, carmel! But I still get the same URL. I'm on a Mac and I can open the image in a new window and it still comes up.

fealola wrote:
Sorry, Caramel!

Yep. Macs can still tell. I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I can still see the original url and it says grauman chinese theater on it.

At the very least, this means that the tinyurl method of "disguise" doesn't work for Mac users.

If nobody else does, I'll research the tinyurl method -- it looks like caramel gave the information necessary, and that it's doable in that way (appears as code in quote box, appears in properties for Windows users), so I should be able to figure it out. But, IMO, doesn't seem like the best solution to this problem since it doesn't work for Mac users and there are Mac users playing the game.

finally looking hard at your link -
that's Grauman's Chinese, now owned by Mann's, so, Mann's Chinese theater.

I don't play that game, but I wouldn't check, osso! :-) Just as a matter of, the point with the tinyurl thing seems to be to disguise the provenance, and so I'm pointing out that even that method isn't actually a disguise for Mac users. (Maccys, cute. :-))

NP Don, again I'll try to puzzle it through myself just if only FYI (it can be done, Caramel did it...

OH

Brainwave

Just a second...

A-HA!

I may (but then again may not) have the solution...

That thread was started over a year ago, Caramel's tinyurl image was posted over a year ago, and the reguirement that image urls end in gif or jpg is fairly new -- I believe newer than a year. (I know about the change because I used to grab entire MSN Group image urls and post, and those stopped working -- for those to work now, you need to crop them to the point where they end in jpg.)

So this question may be akin to, "How do I make a nice colored signature like yours, sozobe?" The answer is, you can't -- I made mine when code was allowed for signatures, and it no longer is. But (and this is where it gets trickier) there is some carry over from what was previously allowed -- my signature will stay blue as long as I don't change it, and perhaps Caramel's tinyurl image is a carryover as well. (Sometimes the change affects everything, so this isn't obvious.)

Have I succeeded in confusing you even further yet? ;-)

If nobody else has solved this conclusively in say 24 hours or so, I'll delve deeper, experiment, see what there is to see.

Oh, soz, that makes sense, I seem to remember having msn urls not work one frustrating episode recently.

Hmm.

Ah, well, it is late here and getting later.

Kiddin' an alteration was made to the forum code for security reasons requiring images to actually have an image file extension to display it here. The reason for this was to avoid the possibility of malicious attempts to embed nasties in the forum pages.

So while in the past, MSN's non-standard URLs would work now they don't.

If you look at the end of your file name you will see that it does not end in a valid image file extention.

So if you remove ?dc=4675468610513522963 from your image url it should post just fine as it will then end in .jpg and get past the security clearance.

As to the gallery you should upload from your hard drive.

I just checked (with quote function, to get actual code used) the last 10 pages of that thread, and none of the photos posted use tinyurl -- Walter uploaded his to an MSN site and posted the url (ending in jpg) from there.

It is not a Mac vs. Windows issue.

It is just as easy to display the real URL a tinyurl link will redirect to in Windows browsers...in IE you could copy/paste the URL into your address bar & in most other browsers you could just drag the image to the address bar. Either way, you will be redirected to & shown the real URL. TinyURL links simply redirect you to the real deal...which is why I've always thought that encouraging people to "hide" the url of an image using tinyurl was silly.

The most likely reason that some images are working & others aren't is because some sites don't allow hotlinking images hosted on their Webservers. There is nothing you can do about that, other than downloading their image & uploading it to a host that allows hotlinking.

The tinyurl link to the temple image being posted in this thread does indeed redirect to a an image that ends with an image file extension.

However, if you use quote, you see that the tinyurl Caramel used that showed up as an image does not have an image file extension. I don't think it would work now. (Easy way to find out, just a sec...)

This is what she used between img brackets. which worked a year ago +:

Trying now:
