Pottery Customers

Marissa was having a hard time attracting customers to her pottery shop, so she asked the Daily Paper writer if her shop could be featured in this week's Paper. And the daily paper writer agreed. And Marissa's gift of a Jewel Encrusted Bowl had nothing to do with it, even though it would look beautiful in any home.

Anyway, the first day after the Daily Paper appeared, she had 13 customers. The next day, she had 14. The next day, 95 customers! And the day after that, 62.

How many total customers did she have in the first twenty days after the Daily Paper appeared?

Kay, I'm a little confused....

Quote:

Is the paper weekly or daily? Is that the trick?

first day after first paper 13
day total 13
running total 13

second day 13 for that days paper and 14 for the day before's
day total 27
running total 40

third day 13 for that days paper and 14 for the day before's and 95 for the day before that
day total 122
running total 162
fourth day 13 for that days paper and 14 for the day before's and 95 for the day before that and 62 for the first paper in the four day cycle
day total 184
running total 346

fifth day on repeat as for fourth day until end of twenty day period 16*184+346

Total after 20 days 3290

I know i'm probably way off track it was fun to think about.

Don't know if he realised it, but Hingehead just got the answer!!

Reading the paragraph carefully we see "This week's paper" or the paper belonging to this week!! Also we see "Daily Paper" written with capitals! This suggests a name - NOT a description of timing!!

So the answer is the total of all 4 days!!

13+14+95+62 = 184!

There are failings in this argument, so I would like to see the original riddle (not someone else's interpretation!).

ALTERNATIVE ANSWER:

How many customers since the first Daily Paper appeared?

We aren't told when the shop opened! If it was more than 20 days after the first edition of the "Daily Paper" then the answer is none!

Blah! Who knows, without seeing the original question, and even then it might be subjective!

Yeah I thought about your alternative answer Biz - and also what if the shop went broke and closed after the fourth day. And do repeat customers count as additions to the customer title. I agree that the wording of the riddle seems to offer to much scope for speculation like that.

But I wait with bated breath for the answer to see if it's a beautiful fit...

Hehe, this riddle is from the Neopets Lenny Conundrum. Everywhere Daily Paper is written, substitue Lenny Conundrum and you get the original riddle.

This is the auctual question

Osiri was having a hard time attracting customers to her pottery shop, so she asked the Lenny Conundrum writer if her shop could be featured in this week's Lenny Conundrum. And obviously, since you're reading this, the Lenny Conundrum writer agreed. And her gift of a Jewel Encrusted Bowl had nothing to do with it, even though it will look beautiful in my Neohome.

Anyway, the first day after the Lenny Conundrum appeared, she had 13 customers. The next day, she had 14. The next day, 95 customers! And the day after that, 62.

How many total customers did she have in the first twenty days after the Lenny Conundrum appeared?

Ok, so we're back to find the mathematical progression between the numbers?

Markr,

Having been shown the answer I can at least see it, however, what I can't see is how anyone could possibly be expected to look at the wording of this riddle and make any connection with pi.

I have seen your postings and you are obviously a very adept mathematician.

So is this a riddle for mathematicians only? Confused

For those reading this that are not adept mathematicians,

When the progression is listed:

13
14
95
62
35
85
79
39

etc

If you read from right to left and down one row at a time:

3141592653589793 etc

Put a decimal point in after the first 3 and you see that Pi shows up!!

Some excellent maths work! Well spotted Markr!!!

I just happen to know pi to about 8 digits. After looking at the problem for several days, I had one of those aha! experiences.

Uh, guys, how does 13 start pi? - shouldn't the first number be 31, then 41 then 59 or, if you're starting after the decimal point shouldn't it have been 14, 15, 92, 65

so i'm confused - obviously the numbers used aren't pi - so we still don't know the answer.....

That's what makes the riddle difficult; they took pi, separated it into two digit pairs, then transposed the two digits.

3.141592653... becomes 31, 41, 59, 26, 53 ...

then

13, 14, 95, 62, 35 ....
