Along more introverted and ambiguous, if no less depressive lines (it's always harder to find songs that express your ups than your downs, eh?), I told myself to post another refrain here:
From Guy Davis'
Tell Me Where The Road Is:
Quote:Can anybody tell me where the road is
I'm just trying to find my way back home
Can anybody tell me where the road is
I'm just trying to find my way back home
When I was young I always swore I'd live with no regrets
I found out later Father Time wasnt taking any bets
Well I took a vow up north and then I met a girl down south
The promises I made turned to dust inside my mouth
Can anybody tell me where the road is
I'm just trying to find my way back home
Can anybody tell me where the road is
I'm just trying to find my way back home
[etc]
And from Quasimoto's
Goodmorning, Sunshine:
Quote:I aint the cat y'all saw yesterday
At least by tomorrow I wont be anyway
Whole new ballgame, whole new day
On another thread I already pasted the refrain to Atmosphere's
Trying to Find a Balance. Like the Quasimoto one overall it doesnt have **** to do with my life, but again my mind just hooks itself to some bit in it and connects to it. At least I think it does, cause when I was pondering whether to include it or not and spoke the words out loud to myself, I almost started to cry for some reason. So its included:
Quote:In the days of kings and queens I was a jester
Treat me like a God, oh they treat me like a leper
You see me moving back and forth between both
I'm trying to find a balance
I'm trying to build a balance
Soma---Pumpkins
a bit--
Didn't want to lose you once again
Didn't want to be your friend
Fulfill a promise made of tears
And crawled back to you
Now I'm all by myself
As I've always felt
And I'll betray myself
To anyone, anyone but you
So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me
Until the bitter, bitter end
When good sleeps in bliss
-------
Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back
It's always something
There's always something going wrong
That's the only guarantee
That's what this is all about
It's a never ending attack
Everything's a lie, and that's a fact
Life is a lemon and I want my money back!
-----------
Hold On---Sarah MacLachlan
Hold on
Hold on to yourself
For this is gonna hurt like hell
Hold on
Hold on to yourself
You know that only time will tell
What is it in me that refuses to believe
This isn't easier than the real thing
My love
You know that you're my best friend
You know I'd do anything for you
My love
Let nothing come between us
My love for you is strong and true
Am I in heaven here or am i...
At the crossroads I am standing
So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
That you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
See another day and we will praise it
And love the light that brings a smile
Across your face
Oh God if you're out there won't you hear me
I know that we've never talked before
Oh God the man I love is leaving
Won't you take him when he comes to your door
--------------
Coldplay---Clocks
Lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have bought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead
Singing
Come out of things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head
And a trouble that can't be named
A tiger's waiting to be tamed
Singing
You are
You are
Confusion that never stops
The closing walls and the ticking clocks
Gonna come back and take you home
I could not stop, that you now know
Singing come out upon my seas
Cursed missed opportunities
Am I part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease
-------------
Dimming of the Day
This old house is falling down around my ears
I'm drowning in a river of my tears
When all my will is gone you hold me sway
I need you at the dimming of the day
You pulled me like the moon
Pulls on the tide
You know just where I keep my better side
What days have come to keep us far apart
A broken promise or a broken heart
----------------
Angel---Sarah MacLachlan
Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There's always one reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memory seeps from my veins
Let me be empty
And weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight
In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lie
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference
Escaping one last time
It's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
This glorious sadness that brings me to my knees
--------------
Angel From Montgomery
Make me an angel
That flies from montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
------------
Sting, Allison Krauss---You Will Be My Ain True Love
You'll walk unscathed through musket fire,
No ploughman's blade will cut thee down,
No cutler's horn will mark thy face
And you will be my ain true love,
And you will be my ain true love
And as you walk through death's dark veil,
The cannon's thunder can't prevail,
And those who hunt thee down will fail,
And you will be my ain true love,
And you will be my ain true love.
-------------------
In My Life---Beatles
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
----------
On a lighter note--I've caught myself humming this more than a few times in the past couple of months.
Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have the town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all
I'm sorry it takes me forever to get back here!
Hingehead, I knew you would come up with an eclectic list should you stumble across this thread. You've heard, really heard, more music than anyone I can think of.
Personally, I can't hear "Moon River" without thinking of big girls locked in cages eating tapioca roots so they can get fat enough to marry the king. The movie "Mondo Cane" ruined that song for me.
But maybe thats what you mean by the affair that never was......?
Thank you for your interesting list.
Sounds like you had a bad year, nimh. I hope your 2005 mix tape goes better.
I think that song might bring flashbacks of an earlier time in my life.
(I had to advance the page to reread these next posts....)
I know what you mean, nimh, about certain songs just hooking you in. There are a couple that I've considered listing for my mix tape that just seem to have an emotional impact on me without really being pertinent to my life.
Interesting choices. I'll have to think about my "gut" songs and which might be good to include.
Hi lash!
It sounds like you might have lost someone close to you this year. "Angel from Montgomery" is one of my favorites -- so beautiful. "Angel" is another song that transports me to a specific time and place. Who doesn't need some comfort?
That is too funny about the Mary Tyler Moore song. I get the "Courtship of Eddie's Father" theme stuck in my head all of the time. The only thing worse than a theme song is a jingle.
One thing that you all have convinced me of is that I really need to get a sound card on my computer so I can listen in to some better radio than is available here. I've avoided it because I know it will slow me down on the work I have to concentrate on when I sit at my computer.
Reading with interest, but hard to contribute. Saying something now because Bonnie Raitt's version of "Angel" is a favorite, one of the last I really heard. Saw her performing it on TV a couple of years ago, brought it back note-for-note -- lovely.
Boomer--
Losing my husband in increments. Many other life-altering losses-- but, I've come out of the other end of the worst of it, I think....altered, but breathing...and a little pissed. <LOL. Its good to be alive enough to be pissed.>
This was a neat thread. It should be part of cognitive therapy. (LOL)
I'm thinking of choosing my songs for next year NOW--and making them true. LOL!
I'm ready to be light and carefree again. I shall plan next year's soundtrack.
Didn't know Bonnie covered "Angel". Will HAVE to hear it.
Thank you for posting that, soz. It has really made me realize that the playback button in everyone's memory works very much in the same way.
It makes me realize how very much I would miss music if I lost my hearing.
I know that as I read through treads like these that it often doesn't matter that I don't know the tune, though. With a really good song, the lyric can stand on its own as poetry and make for some beautiful reading.
Oh, Bonnie's is gorgeous, Lash. From before she was well-known.
Definitely on the lyrics in and of themselves.
Oh lash, I'm sorry. Those incremental losses are hardest of all.
It is good to be alive enough to be pissed. Stay pissed if you have to.
I love your idea of chosing songs in advance for the upcoming year. I'm going to start thinking about mine too!
I could be wrong but I think the Angel song soz refers to is "Angel from Montgomery" and not the Sarah McLaughlin song.
Boomer, I'd never heard of mondo cane - I found this on IMDB;
Plot Summary for
Mondo cane (1962)
Nominally a documentary, this film combines a number of unrelated sequences (both real and staged) -- including a South Pacific "cargo cult", the ritual slaughter of a bull, tribal dances and rituals, and a visit to an ornate pet cemetery -- all focused on the lurid, sensational, and eccentric.
Is that the movie you were referring to? EEWWWH!
Who talked you into to going to see that?
It is a weird old movie and they used to show it on TV all of the time. There was even a "Mondo Cane 2". It was sort of a travelogue of strange places and customs. It is kind of a stoner-classic. Interesting, sicking and totally absurd.
And now that I think about it it was "More" and not "Moon River". Different songs, similar feel.
I found a Mondo Cane 3 as well....
Honestly, hingehead, the first one is worth a look just for its weirdness. Have some friends over, have a few drinks, prepare to be bewildered.
The second one was awful.
I can't even imagine a third one!
(Bonnie did Angel from Montgomery, yes, sorry for confusion!)
(Bonnie did Angel from Montgomery, yes, sorry for confusion!)

Oh, yes. One of my favorites. Caught her at Lilith Fair doing it live--and she's singing it with John Prine on a CD of his I like.
You're right, Soz. Its a classic, IMO.
Lash wrote:I'm thinking of choosing my songs for next year NOW--and making them true.
Lash... this is a great idea...
I think I would have to start off with the song "Pure Imagination" (yes the Willy Wonka song) performed by the Smoking Popes (bolded part my emphasis):
Willy Wonka:
[Spoken]
Hold your breath
Make a wish
Count to three
[Sung]
Come with me
And you'll be
In a world of
Pure imagination
Take a look
And you'll see
Into your imagination
We'll begin
With a spin
Traveling in
The world of my creation
What we'll see
Will defy Explanation
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanta change the world?
There's nothing To it
There is no
Life I know
To compare with
Pure imagination
Living there
You'll be free
If you truly wish to be
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanta change the world?
There's nothing
To it
There is no
Life I know
To compare with
Pure imagination
Living there
You'll be free
If you truly
Wish to be
Great suggestions, so far.
I'll try to concentrate on my choices for 2004 - at least, those I became aware of in 2004 or had a greater significance this year than previously.

2 There is a God - Geri Allen; Regina Carter (Album: The Detroit Experiment)
3 Sophisticated Lady - Duke Ellington
4 Somewhere only we know - Keane (Album: Hopes And Fears)
5 Memphis Soul Stew - King Curtis (Album: Plays Great Memphis Hits/King Size Soul)
6 The Closest Thing To Crazy - Katie Melua (Album: Call off the Search)
7 Dry Your Eyes - Streets (Album: A Grand Don't Come for Free)
8 Azul Anil - Gabin (Album: Gabin)
9 Gute Loune - Tosca (Album: Delhi 9)
10 Milkshake - Kelis
11 Lose Yourself - Eminem (Album: 8 Mile)
12 Love's Theme - Love Unlimited Orchestra (Album: Another Late Night- Howie B)
jpin..., that song coupled with that photo.... I just don't know......
Hi kitchenpete. The titles of your chosen songs almost tell a story in themselves. Interesting.
Is there a certain someone who ties all of these songs together?
