01: david bowie - changes

Still don't know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets and
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
So the days float through my eyes
But stil the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Don't tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Where's your shame
You've left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can't trace time

Strange fascination, fascinating me
Ah changes are taking the pace I'm going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Oh, look out you rock 'n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon now you're gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can't trace time

02: aimee mann - invisible ink

There comes a time when you swim or sink
So I jumped in the drink
Cause I couldn't make myself clear

Maybe I wrote in invisible ink
Oh I've tried to think
How I could have made it appear

But another illlustration is wasted
Cause the results are the same
I feel like a ghost who's trying to move your hands
over some Ouija board in the hopes I can spell out my name

What some take for magic at first glance
Is just sleight of hand depending on what you believe
Something gets lost when you translate
It's hard to keep straight
Perspective is everything

And I know now which is which and what angle I oughta look at it from
I suppose I should be happy to be misread-
Better be that than some of the other things I have become

But nobody wants to hear this tale
The plot is clichd, the jokes are stale
And baby we've all heard it all before
Oh i could get specific but
Nobody needs a catalog
With details of love I can't sell anymore

And aside from that, this chain of reaction,
baby, is losing a link
Though I'd hope you'd know what I tried to tell you
And if you don't I could draw you a picture in invisible ink

But nobody wants to hear this tale
The plot is clichd, the jokes are stale
And baby we've all heard it all before
Oh i could get specific but
Nobody needs a catalog
With details of love I can't sell anymore

03: phil ochs - i ain't a marching anymore

Oh I marched to the battle of New Orleans
At the end of the early British war
The young land started growing
The young blood started flowing
But I ain't marchin' anymore

For I've killed my share of Indians
In a thousand different fights
I was there at the Little Big Horn
I heard many men lying I saw many more dying
But I ain't marchin' anymore

chorus)
It's always the old to lead us to the war
It's always the young to fall
Now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun
Tell me is it worth it all

For I stole California from the Mexican land
Fought in the bloody Civil War
Yes I even killed my brothers
And so many others But I ain't marchin' anymore

For I marched to the battles of the German trench
In a war that was bound to end all wars
Oh I must have killed a million men
And now they want me back again
But I ain't marchin' anymore

(chorus)

For I flew the final mission in the Japanese sky
Set off the mighty mushroom roar
When I saw the cities burning I knew that I was learning
That I ain't marchin' anymore

Now the labor leader's screamin'
when they close the missile plants,
United Fruit screams at the Cuban shore,
Call it "Peace" or call it "Treason,"
Call it "Love" or call it "Reason,"
But I ain't marchin' any more,
No I ain't marchin' any more

04: pearl jam - wishlist

I wish I was a neutron bomb, for once I could go off,
I wish I was a sacrifice but somehow still lived on,
I wish I was a sentimental ornament you hung on,
The Christmas tree, I wish I was the star that went on top,
I wish I was the evidence, I wish I was the ground,
For 50 million hands up raised and open toward the sky.

I wish I was a sailor with someone who waited for me,
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me,
I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good,
I wish I was the full moon shining off a Camaro's hood.

I wish I was an alien at home behind the sun,
I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on,
I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on,
I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down.

I wish I was a radio song, the one that you turned up,

05: tom waits - take it with me

Phone's off the hook
No one knows where we are
It's a long time since I
Drank champagne
The ocean is blue
As blue as your eyes
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

Old long since gone
Now way back when
We lived in Coney Island
Ain't no good thing
Ever dies
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

Far far away a train
Whistle blows
Wherever you're goin
Wherever you've been
Waving good bye at the end
Of the day
You're up and you're over
And you're far away

Always for you, and
Forever yours
It felt just like the old days
We fell asleep on Beaula's porch
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

All broken down by
The side of the road
I was never more alive or
Alone
I've worn the faces off
All the cards
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

Children are playing
At the end of the day
Strangers are singing
On our lawn
It's got to be more
Than flesh and bone
All that you're loved
Is all you own

In a land there's a town
And in that town there's
A house
And in that house
There's a woman
And in that woman
There's a hart I love
I'm gonna take it
With me when I go
I'm gonna take it
With me when I go

06: nirvana - smells like teen spirit

Load up on guns and
Bring your friends
It's fun to lose
And to pretend
She's over bored
And self assured
Oh no, I know
A dirty word

hello, how low? (repeat)

With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yeah

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

hello, how low? (repeat)

With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yeah

And I forget
Just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard
It was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

hello, how low? (repeat)

With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yeah, a denial
A denial
A denial...

07: johnny cash - it ain't me babe

Go away from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who's never weak but always strong
To protect you and defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door

[CHORUS:]
But it ain't me babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'll only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who'll promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes to you
Someone to close his heart
Someone to die for you and more

[REPEAT CHORUS]

You say you're lookin' for someone
To pick you up each time you fall
To gather flowers constantly
And to come each time you call
And will love you for your life
And nothin' more

[REPEAT CHORUS]

08: guided by voices - bulldog skin

I played the part
I played the start
I made a table out of clay
I placed my hands upon the plans
I waited for a proud display
I played around
I heard the sound of certain trouble on the way

I got bulldog skin

I took a car
I drove it far
I dug the quality of steel
I crashed my nerve
I made it swerve
I made it back - was no big deal
I tasted blood
A date with scud
And now I don't know how to feel

I got bulldog skin

09: guided by voices - i am produced

I am pressed printed stomped
And strategically removed
I am everybody
Insane without innocence
I am trapped tricked packaged
And shipped out
I am produced
I am produced
Pressed printed stomped tripped
Trapped tricked packaged shipped...

10: grandaddy - saddest vacant lot in all the world

She's in the kitchen,
Crying on the oven
It seems she really loved him

He's so drunk he's
Passed out in a Datsun
That's parked out in the hot sun
In the saddest vacant lot in all the world

Boldly going
Where he rarely knows
But he'll miss her when he goes

What a shame
As she drifts out of reach
While he's still drunk asleep
In the saddest vacant lot in all the world

11: the flaming lips - do you realize

Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize
We're floating in space?
Do you realize
That happiness makes you cry?

Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your good-byes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize?

Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your good-byes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?

Do you realize?

12: the flaming lips - what a wonderful world

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

secret hidden bonus track

travis - driftwood

Everything is open
Nothing is set in stone
Rivers turn to ocean
Oceans tide you home
Home is where your heart is
But your heart had to roam
Drifting over bridges
Never to return
Watching bridges burn
You're driftwood floating underwater
Breaking into pieces pieces pieces
Just driftwood hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you bind you grind you
Nobody is an island
Everyone has to go
Pillars turn to butter
Butterflying low
Low is where your heart is
But your heart has to grow
Drifting under bridges
Never with the flow
And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line
So I'm sorry that you turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long long time
Everywhere there's trouble
Nowhere's safe to go
Pushes turn to shovel's
Shovelling the snow
Frozen you have chosen
The path you wish to go
Drifting now forever
And forever more
Until you reach your shore
You're driftwood floating underwater
Breaking into pieces pieces pieces
Just driftwood hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you bind you grind you
And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line
So I'm sorry that you turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long long time
You've been drifting for a long long time
You've been drifting for a long long
Drifting for a long long time

Hi djjd and superjuly!

Are you going to fill us in on why those are your choices to represent your year?

I love Aimee Man, djjd. Is that song on Batchelor #2? I think its the only one of her albums I don't have and now I'm thinking I shouldn't delay any longer. Beautiful.

it's from "lost in space"

01: is'nt every year about changes

02: there have been some misunderstandings in my life this year, and the idea of things written or drawn in invisible ink just kind of fit

03: this year neede a good protest song, and they don't come much better than phil ochs

04: doesn't everyone have a wishlist

05: the older i get the more loss i seem to encounter, and this song speaks of not letting go

06: nirvana just rocks, and the middle of the mix seemed a good place to rock

07: revisited an old love and found that the song was right

08: guided by voices is perhaps my favourite band of all time and this is one of my favourite songs

09: this sums up my work situation perfectly

10: every year needs a good sad song

11: and a happy one

12: well it is isn't it

bonus track
probably the most honest track on the mix, really should find that anchor

Shall I?

1. Trouble - Coldplay
The lyrics don't get to me as much as the melody does.

2. Walk Away - Ben Harper
I recently broke up a 3 1/2 years relationship and this song says it all.

3. Everything - Alanis Morissete
"I blame everyone else, not my own partaking
My passive-aggressiveness can be devastating
I'm the most gorgeous woman that you've ever known
And you've never met anyone who's as everything as I am sometimes."

I wish I was half as confident as this woman is.

4. Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen - Baz Luhrmann
Okay, I can't believe I had never heard this song before. I downloaded the video produced by DM9 and it simply made me cry, smile, laugh and realize how little I actually know and how much I'm yet to live.

5. Patience - Guns 'n Roses
A classic.

6. I'll Love Again - Lara Fabian
I know I will.

7. Per Amore - Andrea Bocelli
No particular reason. It's a beautiful italian song. I like the version by Zizi Possi much better though.

8. Secret Smile - Semisonic
<sigh> This song...

9. Unwell - Matchbox 20
It's Rob Thomas for crying out loud!

Thanks superjuly!

Hi ask chester and welcome to A2K.

Is everything alright? Your picks are a little worrisome.

My day today got off to a ..... strange..... yeah, strange start. I pulled out my trusty camera to document the antics.

I'm thinking of commemorating this day on my mix tape to go with my photo essay.

I could go for irony and choose Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" or I could go for something more truthful and pick the Animal's "We've Gotta Get Out of this Place"!

Ask me tomorrow and I might come up with 12 different songs... but I'm in a bit of a funk this week and most of the songs I picked reflect my mood.

1.) Faces: Ooh La La

Quote:
Poor old Granddad
I laughed at all his words
I thought he was a bitter man
He spoke of women's ways
They trap you, then they use you
Before you even know
For love is blind and you're far too kind
Don't ever let it show

I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was younger.
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was stronger.

The Can Can's such a pretty show
They'll steal your heart away
But backstage, back on earth again
The dressing rooms are grey
They come on strong and it ain't too long
Before they make you feel a man
But love is blind and you soon will find
You're just a boy again

When you want her lips, you get a cheek
Makes you wonder where you are
If you want some more and she's fast asleep
Then she's twinkling with the stars.
Poor young grandson, there's nothing I can say
You'll have to learn, just like me
And that's the hardest way

Ooh la la
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was younger.
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was stronger

I picked this one because it makes me think of learning from my mistakes. You may get hurt but as long as you know now what you should have known then then you can avoid making the same mistake twice... there have been a ton of mistakes this year.

2.) Led Zeppelin: Ramble on

Quote:
Leaves are falling all around,
It's time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I'm much obliged
For such a pleasant stay.
But now it's time for me to go,
The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain,
And with it pain,
And it's headed my way.
Ah, sometimes I grow so tired,
But I know I've got one thing I got to do,

*Ramble On,
And now's the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
I'm goin' 'round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
I've been this way ten years to the day, Ramble On,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Got no time to for spreadin' roots,
The time has come to be gone.
And tho' our health we drank a thousand times,
It's time to Ramble On.

* Chorus

I ain't tellin' no lie.
Mine's a tale that can't be told,
My freedom I hold dear;
How years ago in days of old
When magic filled the air,
T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair,
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up
And slipped away with her.
Her, her....yea.
Ain't nothing I can do, no.

* Chorus

Gonna ramble on, sing my song
Gotta keep-a-searchin' for my baby...
Gonna work my way, round the world
I can't stop this feelin' in my heart
Gotta keep searchin' for my baby
I can't find my bluebird!
I'd listen to my bluebird sing but I can't find my blue bird
A-keep-a ramblin' baby...

This is an anthem for my restless spirit. When I get in a funk and feel like I'm in a rut, I crave change. The easiest way to create change is by placing yourself in a situation where you have to change.

3.) Minor Threat: Good Guys

Quote:
I'm a poor boy born in a rut
Some say my manners aint the best
Some of my friends made a whole lot of trouble
some say i'm no better than the rest

But tell your momma and your papa
Sometimes good guys dont wear white

Everyday I work hard
At night I spend restless time
Those rich kids and all their lazy money
They can't hold a candle to mine

So tell your momma and your papa
Sometimes good guys dont wear white

Good guys, bad guys
Which is which?
The white collar worker
Or the digger of the ditch?
Man, who's to say who's the better man?
I'm doin the very best I can
Best I can

You thought I had a dirty mind
All those messed up chicks
all the changing times
white filth and easy living
Can't come close
To the love that I've given

So tell your momma and your papa
Sometimes good guys dont wear white
They don't wear white
They don't wear white
They don't wear white
They don't wear white

Don't judge a book by it's cover... and don't place your trust in just anybody becomes sometimes bad guys don't wear black.

4.) Jawbreaker: Chesterfield King

Quote:
We stood in your room and laughed out loud.
Suddenly the laughter died
and we were caught in an eye to eye.
We sat on the floor and did we sit close.
I could smell your thoughts and thought.
Do you want to touch a lot like me?
Too scared to say a thing.
I left your house and kicked myself.
I put those feelings on a shelf to die.
I guess I'm not a gambling type
but think of what the two of us had lost.
I needed some time to think it out.
7-Eleven parking lot.
A toothless woman turned and stopped.
I gave her a dime and a Chesterfield.
She leaned down and kissed my cheek.
I was scared but it felt sweet.
Felt so sweet.
She asked me if I had a name.
I told her I was glued up on some chick.
We sat and smoked against the wall.
Drank a beer, felt the chill of fall.

I took my car and drove it down the hill by your house.
I drove so fast.
The wind it couldn't cool me down,
so I turned it around and came back up.

You were waiting on your step,
steam showing off your breath and
water in your eyes.
We pulled each other into one,
parkas clinging on the lawn and kissed right there.

Said all my chicks they smoke these things and handed you a
Chesterfield King.
Held your hand and watched TV
and traced the little lines along your palm.

I took my car and drove it down the hill by your house.
I drove so fast.
The wind it couldn't cool me down,
so I turned it around and came back up.

You were waiting on your step,
steam showing off your breath and
water in your eyes.
We pulled each other into one,
parkas clinging on the lawn and kissed right there.

If you don't take chances you will not succeed. In order to get what you want you have to try... and sometimes motivation or encouragement comes from very unexpected places.

5.) Naked Raygun: Entrapment

Quote:
You appear stage left all searching for your plan of life
Youth of course on your side as they play the drum and fife
Tryin' to get you marching to the worn out song they preach
About how things you hope for are so very out of reach

Can't they even remember
When they had hopes
And dreams?

Adolescence fled; the adolescents sang; while you -- you had no chance
Then before you even knew your wife she got in line to be your first romance
In the sunset of your best years you piled on the debt
You think this can't be happening here -- not here, not now, not yet

You're gonna regret this.
It's your big fall...

Well OK -- life's not what it used to be
We're tryin' to become something that maybe wasn't meant to be
We're now so totally up for grabs -- I hope someone's left to see
Will the end justify the means? Well it beats the heck outta me

In the next round
What will we be?

Both my wife and I are wondering if we are doing what we want to be doing. How did we get here? Where do we want to be? What can we do to get there before it is to late?

6.) Operation Ivy: Room Without A Window

Quote:
The position being taken is not to be mistaken
For attempted education or righteous accusation
Only a description just an observation of the pitiful
Condition of our degeneration

Walls made of opinions thru which we speak and never listen
Ceiling made of pride vicious and self satisfied
Door thats made of rage hard and slowly aged
Always closing tighter with every war that's waged

Room without a window cant see out...
Room without a window cant see out cant see out...

Floor is made of lives wed gladly end to stay inside
Corners made of borders, borders made of law and order
Painted with the words of politicians and religion
Plastered with the wreckage of our cultural division

Room without a window cant see out...
Room without a window cant see out cant see out...

ha ha ha ha ha
Were so stupid
Killing each other
Dont we learn nothing

Gotta room inside a mind
Yeah we gotta
Cant see out because were blind
But i guess its true
Gotta make ouselves drink
(all right) from a room without a window
to a different way to think

The position being taken is not to be mistaken
For attempted education or righteous accusation
Only a description just an observation of the pitiful
Condition of our degeneration

Room without a window cant see out...
Room without a window cant see out cant see out...
Room without a window cant see out...
Room without a window cant see out cant see out...

Politically, we are all so blinded by what we think is right that we don't take time to listen to each other or question ourselves.

7.) Randy Travis: Deeper than the holler

Quote:
Well I've heard those city singers singin 'bout how they can love
Deeper than the oceans higher than the stars above
Well I come from the country and I know I ain't seen it all
But I heard that oceans salty and the stars they sometimes fall
But that would not do justice to the way I feel for you
So I have to sing this song about all the things I knew

My love is deeper than the holler, stronger than the rivers
Higher than the pine trees growin' tall upon the hill
My love is purer than the snowflakes that fall in late December
And honest as a robin on a springtime window sill
And longer than the song of the Whippoorwill

From the backroads to the broadway shows with a million miles between
There's a least a million love songs that people love to sing
And everyone is different and everyone's the same
So this is just another way of sayin' the same thing

My love is deeper than the holler, stronger than the rivers
Higher than the pine trees growin' tall upon the hill
My love is purer than the snowflakes that fall in late December
And honest as a robin on a springtime window sill
And longer than the song of the Whippoorwill

My love is deeper than the holler, stronger than the rivers
Higher than the pine trees growin' tall upon the hill
My love is purer than the snowflakes that fall in late December
And honest as a robin on a springtime window sill
And longer than the song of the Whippoorwill

For my wife who I love more than anything... what else is there to say?

8.) Son Volt: Windfall

Quote:
Now and then it keeps you running
It never seems to die
The trail's spent with fear
Not enough living on the outside
Never seem to get far enough
Staying in between the lines
Hold on to what you can
Waiting for the end
Not knowing when

May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away

Trying to make it far enough, to the next time zone
Few and far between past the midnight hour
Never feel alone, you're really not alone...

Switching it over to AM
Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down
Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven

May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away.

My de-stressing song. When things get piled up so high you can't see past the sh¡t... that is the time to drop everything... hop in your car with the windows down and good music on the radio... and let the wind take your troubles away.

Favorite verse perhaps of any song:

Quote:
Switching it over to AM
Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down
Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven

10.) Uncle Tupelo: Acuff-Rose

Quote:
Early in the morning, sometimes late at night
Sometimes I get the feeling that everything's alright
Early in the evening, sometimes in the day
Sometimes I get the feeling everything's okay

Because everything cuts against the tide
When you're by my side

Name me a song that everybody knows
And I'll bet you it belongs to Acuff-Rose
Children in the playground, the folks in the home
Anybody anywhere who's ever been alone

Because everything cuts against the tide
When I hear that sound

I'm not sure why... but when I hear this song I think of my wife who will always be by my side and together we can accomplish great tasks... even if we are going against the tide. a "2 is greater than 1" kind of thing.

11.) Henryk Górecki: Symphony No. 3

12.) Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5, "Emporer"; Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 - Van Cliburn

11 and 12 are actually entire albumns... I listen to these when my creativity leaves me and I need a little boost. Or when I am stressed out and need a little downtime. Or when I am invigorated and just feeling good. I feel better after listening to them then I did before listening to them... I've needed them a lot this past year.

Overall, this year has been really tough for me, in pretty much every respect.

#1 Billy Joel - To Make You Feel My Love = I picked this because this past year has been hard on my husband and me and I've really tried to support him in his search for himself and his career. We've had quite a year....

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong

I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love

#2 Hoobastank - The Reason = This song reminds me so much of the changes I've gone through and tried to make within myself to make myself a better wife, lover and friend. My husband always inspires me.

I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why i need you to hear

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is You

and the reason is you
and the reason is you
and the reason is you

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

#3 Tori Amos - Crucify = A year filled dealing with issues of self worth and identity.

Every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
Then I get afraid what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
Figures that my courage would choose to sell out now

I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets
Looking for a savior underneath these dirty sheets
I've been raising up my hands
Drive another nail in
Just what God needs
One more victim

Why do we crucify ourselves everyday?
I crucify myself
And nothing I do is good enough for you
Crucify myself everyday
I crucify myself
My heart is sick of bein'
I said my heart is sick of bein' in
Chains (oh-oh-oh)
Chains (oh-oh-oh)

Got a kick for a dog beggin' for love
I gotta have my suffering
So that I can have my cross
I know a cat named Easter
He says "Will you ever learn?
You're just an empty cage girl if you kill the bird."

I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets
Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets
I've been raising up my hands
Drive another nail in
Got enough guilt to start
My own religion

Why do we crucify ourselves everyday?
I crucify myself
My heart is sick of bein'
I said my heart is sick of bein' in
Chains (oh-oh-oh)
Chains (oh-oh-oh)

Please be
Save me
I cry
(ah-ah ah-ah)

Looking for a savior in these dirty streets
Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets
I've been raising up my hands
Drive another nail in
Where are those angels
When you need them?

Why do we crucify ourselves everyday?
I crucify myself
And nothing I do is good enough for you
Crucify myself everyday
I crucify myself
My heart is sick of bein'
I said my heart is sick of bein' in
Chains (oh-oh-oh)
Chains
Why do we... (Why do we)
Chains (crucify ourselves?)
Crucify ourselves
Everyday (Why do we)
(crucify ourselves?)
Chains... (repeat backing refrain)

Never going back again
Crucify myself again
You know
Never going back again to
Crucify myself
Everyday

#4 Sarah McLaughlin - The Worlds on Fire = Consider the state of the country and the world and the helplessness I feel sometimes that I can't do more.

Hearts are worn
In these dark ages
You're not alone,
In these stories' pages
The light has fallen
Amongst the living and the dying
And I'll try to hold it in
Yeah I'll try to hold it in

The world is on fire
It's more than I can handle
I'll tap into the water
Try and bring my share
Try to bring more, more than I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am able ...

I watch the heavens
But I find no calling
Something I can do to change what's coming
Stay close to me
While the sky is falling
I don't wanna be left alone,
Don't want to be alone...

The world is on fire
It's more than I can handle
I'll tap into the water
Try and bring my share
Try to bring more, more than I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am able ...

Hearts break ... hearts mend ... love still hurts
visions clash ... planes crash
Still there's talk of saving souls
Still the cold is closing in on us

We part the veil on our killer sun
Stray from the straight line
On this short run ...
The more we take the less we become
The fortune of one man means less for some

The world is on fire
It's more than I can handle
I'll tap into the water
Try and bring my share
Try to bring more, more than I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am able ...

The world is on fire
It's more than I can handle
I'll tap into the water
Try and bring my share
Try to bring more, more than I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am able ...

#5 Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun = I had a really stressful year...I just wanted a little fun!!

I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones
And girls just want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you're still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have--

That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls-- they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I want to be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls--they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun,
They want to have fun,
They want to have fun...

#6 Andrea Bocelli - Tremo e T'amo = See translation. I did not experience this personally but this is the world we live in and the lyrics hit me particularly hard.

T'amo e tremo (I love you and I'm trembling)
Disse la donna (said the woman)
Al suo soldato (to her soldier)
Che non tornava (Who wouldn't be coming back)
La sua voce (Her plaintive voice)
Nel vento correva (Was carried by the wind)
Sopra la neve (Across the chilling snow)
Dove lui combatteva (To where her soldier fought)

Tremo e t'amo (I'm trembling and I love you)
Disse e piangeva (She whispered as she cried)
Nel buio della sala (And in the darkness of the room)
Qualcuno rideva (Somebody laughed)
Per far torto alla paura (In conquest of the fear)
A questo amore che gia finiva (That this love was about to end)

Il ricordo tradisce la mente (But sweet memories can betray you)
Il soldato non sente piu niente (The soldier doesn't feel anything anymore)

D'improvviso (Suddenly)
Fu preso alle spalle (from behind)
Dal suo nemico (his enemy strikes)
Che strano parlava (Who, stragely, was speaking)
Delle rose, del vino e di cose (Of roses, of wine, of life's other joys)
Che un'altra vita gli prometteva (That were promised him in another life)
Ma quante spose (Oh, how many brides)
La guerra toglieva (Will war take away)
Dalle bracia della prima sera (From that first night's warm embrace)

Tremo e ho freddo (I'm trembling and I'm cold)
Disse il soldato (Said the soldier)
Al suo nemico che lo guardava (To his enemy, just like himself)
La sua voce nel vento restava (His voice hung motionless in the wind)
Sulla platea che muta ascoltava (Heard by the silent audience of those that fell before him)

#7 Christina Aguilera - I Will Be = This was the song I was listening to on my way to my interview for a new job (which I got!!). It is pretty cheesy but it motivated me.

The world seems so cold
When I face so much all alone
A little scared to move on
And knowing how fast I have grown

And I wonder just where I fit in
Oh the vision alive in my head
Oh yes

I will be
Strong on my own
I will see through the rain
I will find my way
I will keep on
Traveling down the road
Till I finally reach my dream
Till I'm living, and I'm breathing
My destiny, yeah yeah

I can't let go now
Even when darkness surrounds
But if I hold on, yeah
I will show the world
All the things that you never expected to see
From little old me, this pittsburgh girl

And I wonder just where my place is
Close my eyes and I remind myself this
Oh yeah yeah

I will be
Strong on my own
I will see through the rain
I will find my way
I will keep on
Traveling down the road
Till I finally reach my dream
Till I'm living, and I'm breathing
My destiny, ohh

It comforts me
Ooh it keeps me
Alive each day of my life
Always guiding me
Providing me
With the hope I desperately need

Well I gotta believe
There's something out there meant for me
Oh I get on my knees
Praying I will receive
The courage to grow and the faith to know

That I will be
Strong on my own
I will see through the rain
I will find my way
I will keep on
Traveling down the road
Till I finally reach my dream
Till I'm living, and I'm breathing
My destiny

That is all I could think of so far.

I'd also put "Unaffected" by Hoobastank. People seem to judge everything I do.
-Paris

There never seems to be
Because what i believe
A moment i'm not trying
To show them who i am
Why can't they understand
The things that they're denying?

They're denying.....

[chorus:]

So what should i do
Just lay next to you
As though i'm unaffected
And who should i be
When they're judging me
As though i'm unaffected?

[2nd verse:]

A chance they'd never give
To ever want to live
The life that i am made of
There's nothing left to prove
My heart's forever true
What is it they're afraid of?

Afraid of.....

[chorus:]

So what should i do
Just lay next to you
As though i'm unaffected
And who should i be
When they're judging me
As though i'm unaffected?

Before they even saw my face
The knew that i was not the same
And decided i was not the one for you
For you.....

So what should i do?
I'm not unaffected
And who should i be?
I'm not unaffected

[chorus:]

So what should i do
Just lay next to you
As though i'm unaffected
And who should i be
When they're judging me
As though i'm unaffected?

Unaffected...[repeat 4 times]

Hi jpin.... and Kristie!

Nice choices. Interesting.

I'm not getting very far on my list, am I? This is turning out to be harder than I thought. I'm impressed with all of you who managed to come up with such interesting lists of meaningful songs so quickly.

Thanks jpin... I feel a little better about my pokiness now.

I DO have another one to add -- "My Baby Thinks S/He's a Train" by Asleep At the Wheel.

I wanted something kind of country/rockabilly and well, Mo thinks he's a train; almost every well loved toy is train related and he often insists that I call him "Percy".

Thanks boomerang. I love music. I have certain cd's that i play over and over again in the car. I have to sing at the top of my lungs of course. They weren't really hard to come up with only because the theme of my life the past year has been pretty consistant. Coming up with the rest is the hard part. Don't want to be redundant.

Percy... that's hilarious. I had a cousin once who thought he was a sprinkler. He would make the noises and everything. Laughing

I hope you get some more poster on this thread... It is a good one.

Black Star's Thieves in the Night will get in my mix just because of the refrain:

Hiding like thieves in the night from life
Illusions of oasis making you look twice

Ohhhh. Mysterious nimh.

You're kind of like me in that while the whole song might not be relevant, a certain part of it is very relevant.

Thanks jpin.... I hope so too.

<breathing a sigh of relief that Mo has not yet decided to become a sprinkler named Ricardo>

Gamble all for love - Ben Lee (because I am, resigned after eight years and moving 3,000 km north - my latest 'Our Song')

Choose life - PF Project (because it's such an angry denunciation of dismal way many of us lead our lives)

Teenager of the year - Lo-Tel (just love a song with pop sensibilities that straddles a feeling of emotional up and emotional down simultaneously)

No Rain - Blind Melon (an older 'Our song' from a former girlfriend who is still a very good friend, but I probably won't see again)

Do you realize?? - The Flaming Lips (see Teenager of the Year)

We Float - P.J. Harvey (had something to say about how I was living my life)

This Mess We're In - P.J. Harvey/Thom Yorke (an 'our song' for an affair that wasn't)

Moon River - Henry Mancini (this song always makes me teary and long for something I've never had)

Common people - Pulp (just a brilliant piece of working class romantic angst, executed with well faked sincerity)

Maria Lando - Susana Baca (made me suddenly realise if I wanted to learn Spanish maybe I should do it through song and not wooden imaginary conversations in Madrid train stations)

Darshana (FSOL mix) - David Sylvian/Robert Fripp and Kothbiro - Ayub Aguda (my two perennial 'take me out this universe for a bit' songs)

I think that's 12

I'm sorry to say that significant parts of 2004 (though not as much, perhaps, as of - say - 2003) were neatly summarised by Green Velvet's techno anthem "Answering Machine". Purely because of its rawther catchy refrain, in which a voice responds to one obnoxious answering machine message after another with a heartfelt: I - DON'T - NEED - THIS - ****!

Oh yeah.
