McTag, you are a wonder, Manchester. Love your sense of humour, Brit.

Incidentally, Alec Baldwin was a looker as well.

"What evil lurks in the hearts of men. Only the shadow knows."

and to follow that theme, another from RLS:

My Shadow
I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller than an india-rubber ball,
And sometimes he's so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he's a coward you can see;
I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed

Wishing all a good day.
Thanks for posting one of my favorite RLS childhood poems, Letty. Smile

Remembering Mercedes McCambridge today:

Mercy" McCambridge was born in Joliet, Illinois to Irish Catholic immigrant parents; she later falsely claimed to have been born on March 17, 1918.

McCambridge began as a radio performer in the 1940s and also performed on Broadway. Her big break in Hollywood came when she was cast opposite Broderick Crawford in the 1949 film All the King's Men. McCambridge cemented her fame when she won the 1950 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, which also won Best Picture for that year. McCambridge also won the Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Most Promising Newcomer - Female for that film.

In 1954, McCambridge co-starred with Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden in the offbeat western drama, Johnny Guitar, now a cult classic. McCambridge and Hayden publicly declared their dislike of Crawford, with McCambridge labeling Crawford "a bad egg". The cast also included a fresh faced, but close to 40 years old, actor named Ernest Borgnine.

Her performance in "Johnny Guitar" led to her co-starring with Burt Lancaster and Walter Matthau in "The Kentuckian", in which she played, yet again a woman of evil intent.

McCambridge was also well-known for providing the dubbed-in voice of the demonically possessed character in The Exorcist, acted by Linda Blair. McCambridge, however, was not originally credited for the voice in the film's initial release, probably so as to heighten the film's initial mystique. McCambridge later went public in the 1970s in her dispute with the film's creator William Friedkin and the Warner Bros. brass over her exclusion, and with the help of the Screen Actors Guild, she was ultimately properly credited for her vocal work in future releases of the film. In interviews with E!'s True Hollywood Story regarding the supposed "Curse of the Exorcist", it was said that McCambridge's already deep voice was made raspy and frightening-sounding and it "really became the Devil's" via sleep deprivation, cigarettes, and drinking raw egg yolks and liquor.

McCambridge has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: one for motion pictures, located at 1722 Vine Street, and one for television located 6243 Hollywood Boulevard.

McCambridge told the story of her life in The quality of mercy: an autobiography (published in NYC by Times Books c1981;ISBN 0812909453), the title making use of her childhood nickname.

Private life
McCambridge's only child, her son John Lawrence Fifield (who later adopted his step-father's surname and became known as John Markle), killed his family and then himself in a murder/suicide in 1987.

McCambridge died on March 2, 2004 in La Jolla, California, of natural causes aged 87.

Well, there's our Raggedy. I can almost remember every single verse in RLS's "Child's Garden of Verse." More about that later, however.

My word, PA. Mercy was the voice in The Exorcist. I had forgotten that. Thanks for the memory, honey.

Following the mercy theme, listeners:

Buckinghams

My baby, she made out of love,
Like one of those bunnies out of a playboy club,
But she's got somethin' that's greater than gold,
Crazy 'bout that girl, 'cause she got so much soul!

I said she got the kind o' lovin', kissin' and a-huggin'
Sure is mellow, glad that I'm her fellow, and I know
That she knocks me off my feet, have mercy on me!
'Cause she knocks me off my feet!

There is no girl in the whole world
That can love love me like you do!

Well, oh, my baby, when she walks by
All the fellows go "Ooh!" and I know why.
Is it because that girl she looks so fine,
And if she ever leaves me I will lose my mind.

She got the kind o' lovin', kissin' and a-huggin'
Sure is mellow, glad that I'm her fellow, and I know
That she knocks me off my feet, have mercy on me!
'Cause she knocks me off my feet!

There is no girl in the whole world
That can love love me like you do!

Hey! Everybody, the neighborhood,
Now testify that my girl, she look so good, yeah,
She's so fine, she's built, I'm startin' to go blind,
Yeah, If she ever leaves me I will lose my mind!

Baby, yeah,
You gotta, gotta have some mercy, yeah!
Alright

My word, folks, The Buckinghams? I don't think so.

Fairy nuff Letty, ?'your' picture did fool me for a while, I am just too trusting I guess.

Artist: Peter Pan
Song: You Can Fly You Can Fly You Can Fly Lyrics

Think of the presents you've brought
Any merry little thought
Think of Winter, think of snow
Think of sleigh bells Here we go!
Like a reindeer in the sky
You can fly! You can fly!
You can fly! You can fly!
Soon you'll zoom all around the room
All it takes is faith and trust
But the thing that's a positive must
Is a little bit of pixie dust
The dust is a positive must
You can fly! You can fly!
You can fly! You can fly!
When there's a smile in your heart
There's no better time to start
It's a very simple plan
You can do what the birdies can
At least it's worth a try
You can fly! You can fly!
You can fly! You can fly!

Ah, try, the Peter Pan syndrome. That's really me. (the song, that is.)

I just found out, folks, that Cannonball Adderly did Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. I didn't think it was them Brits. <smile>

Hmmm. Where is the turtle? Still playing chess somewhere.

It seems that our Dutchy will also be away for fifteen days. Certainly will miss him on the Where Am I Thread along with Francis and C.J.

Well, let's move to a new theme, listeners:

I got a whole lotta loving for you true true loving for you

I got a whole loving for you I got a whole love for you I got a whole love for you

I got a whole love and kisses for you

We got a whole lot to do a whole lot to do and I'm so glad to see you

[ piano ]

I got a whole lotta loving for you...

I got a whole lotta loving for you...

I got a whole lotta loving for you...

Hank Williams, Jr. did NOT do that originally. Guess who did. <smile>

Yit, you bratty turtle. I was wondering if someone would come up with that and not Fats. <smile>

Now, folks, shall we dub our turtle, Horton? He might be able to find the Who. Razz

What's this song <from memory>

How would you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue.
Oh, I do think it's the pleasantest thing,
Ever a child can do.

Up in the air, and over the wall,
Til I can see so high.
Rivers and valleys and trees and things,
Over the country side.

Then I'd look down on the garden so green
Down on the roof so brown.
Up in the air I'd go flying again,
Up in the air and down.

Swing then; swing then, up in the air so blue.
Oh, it's the pleasantest thing,
Ever a child can do.

Jerry Lewis Gets Legion of Honor Medal

By JENNY BARCHFIELD, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 26 minutes ago

PARIS - France formalized its fascination with
Jerry Lewis Thursday with a uniquely Gallic gift for his 80th birthday: a medal and induction into the Legion of Honor.

Lewis, who has long been venerated in France, received the honorary title of "Legion Commander" in a raucous ceremony in Paris ?- hamming it up for the cameras, winking, sticking out his tongue and making his trademark funny faces.

True to form, the American comedian turned what is generally a sober event ?- set in a gilded hall of the Ministry of Culture ?- into a virtual slapstick routine.

Lewis, who bucked formality by wearing slippers to the ceremony, clowned around with Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres ?- yawning, checking his watch, and even pretending to fall asleep during Donnedieu's 20-minute-long speech in French. The crowd roared at Lewis' antics, their laughter often drowning out Donnedieu's lofty words.

At one point, Lewis tried to snatch the prepared speech off the podium, but an affable Donnedieu persevered. "The longer my remarks last the better," he told the audience, "so you can keep on enjoying Jerry Lewis' comic talents."

When he finally took the microphone, Lewis apologized for not speaking French, but said that "even if the French people cannot hear my language, they have always heard my heart."

Lewis applauded the country's sense of humor, saying he believed it "took France through all those difficult years, and will take it through difficult times now because the French are not afraid to laugh."

Ministry officials wheeled in a massive cake, and the audience sang "Happy Birthday," delivered with a heavy French accent.

Lewis said he was flattered by his induction into the Legion of Honor, and said he had been "gloriously elevated" by the award. He was one of 37 foreigners to have received the title over the past three years.

"The French people are the best in the world," Lewis said.

A little tune from paddy O'Try -

Artist: The Little Mermaid
Song: Kiss The Girl Lyrics

Percussion
Strings
Winds
Words

There you see her
Sitting there across the bay
She don't got a lot to say
But there's something about her
And you don't know why
But you're dying to try
You wanna kiss the girl

Yes, you want her
Look at her, you know you do
It's possible she wants you, too
There is one way to ask her
It don't take a word
Not a single word
Go on and kiss the girl

Sing with me now
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
My, oh, my
Look at the boy too shy
He ain't gonna kiss the girl
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Ain't that sad
Ain't it shame, too bad
You gonna miss the girl

Now's your moment
Floating in a blue lagoon
Boy, you better do it soon
No time will be better
She don't say a word
And she won't say a word
Until you kiss the girl

Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Don't be scared
You got the mood prepared
Go on and kiss the girl
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Don't stop now
Don't try to hide it how
You wanna kiss the girl
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Float along
Listen to the song
The song say kiss the girl
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Music play
Do what the music say
You wanna kiss the girl

You've got to kiss the girl
Why don't you kiss the girl
You gotta kiss the girl
Go on and kiss the girl

Love that one, Try. My Irish friend in Virginia told me that most songs were Irish/American. Not certain of that, but I know some are beautiful and will steal your heart away.

Love this one, folks, but I am not certain it is Irish

RICHARD TAUBER lyrics
SMILIN THROUGH

There's a little brown road winding over the hill
To a little white court by the sea
There's a little green ga-ate
At whose railings I wai-ait
While two eyes of blue
Come smiling through a-at me

There's a grey lock or two in the brown of the hair
There's some silver in mine too, I see
But in all the long year-ears
When the cloud brought their tear-ears
Those two eyes of blue
Kept smiling through at me

And if ever I'm left in this world all alone
I shall wait for my call patiently
For if heaven be ki-ind
I shall wait there to fi-ind
Those two eyes of blue
Come smiling through... a-at me.

?'Paddy' Madonna Lyrics
Material Girl
Written by Peter Brown and Robert Rans

Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they're O.K.
If they don't give me proper credit
I just walk away

They can beg and they can plead
But they can't see the light, that's right
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right, 'cause we are

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Some boys romance, some boys slow dance
That's all right with me
If they can't raise my interest then I
Have to let them be

Some boys try and some boys lie but
I don't let them play
Only boys who save their pennies
Make my rainy day, 'cause they are

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world

Boys may come and boys may go
And that's all right you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they're after me, 'cause everybody's

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

A material, a material, a material, a material world

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world

Is Madonna Irish, Try? It doesn't matter, however, 'cause it's just the music that counts. Thanks, honey. I like green no matter what color it is.<smile>

Sing me a love song for my Irish boy;
Take from me my heart, my head, my home;
Pass to him my body, life, and joy;
Add to his my fields of fertile loam.
To him I am and will be earth and heaven,
Resting in the sanctum of his fire;
In me he'll find all his gods have given,
Creating dynasties of his desire.
Know, my love, that I will come to you
'Ere this sun has set on Patrick's Day;
So you must find the courage to be true,
Daring to give other dreams away.
After this leap, all loneliness is past:
Years may come and go, but love will last.

UhOh, listeners. The bloody scientists are at it again:

Is the Irish Shamrock a Load of Blarney? By SHAWN POGATCHNIK, Associated Press Writer
9 minutes ago

DUBLIN, Ireland - For one week a year, nursery owner Cecil Geddis is knee-deep in shamrocks, the delicate three-leafed plant that people the world over associate with Ireland and St. Patrick's Day.

"You have to move fast in this business. Nobody wants to buy a shamrock on March 18," said Geddis, whose nursery has produced 80,000 shamrock plants, most shipped out in cartons bearing leprechaun decorations and labeled: "Authentic shamrock ?- grown in Ireland."

While wearing a freshly cut shamrock is a fading tradition in Ireland, a few savvy growers and seed merchants are wooing foreign buyers and tourists with claims that the shamrock seeds and plants they offer are unique to the emerald isle.

"About 10 or 15 years ago, the source of shamrock seeds disappeared, because there was in fact only one source in the country, and the man died. He didn't pass it on to anybody else!" said Thomas Quearney, owner of a specialist Dublin seed importer, Mr. Middleton Garden Shop.

Quearney claims to have identified a new secret source for seeds that he soon will sell in packets of 100 for just under $5. "These grow genuine shamrocks. It's not clover at all," he said.

Botanists say that's a load of blarney.

"Shamrock only exists on St. Patrick's Day. Every other day of the year, it's just young clover," said botanist Charles Nelson, Ireland's leading shamrock expert.

He has identified four varieties of clover ?- in layman's terms: white, yellow, black and red ?- that Irish people label shamrock. Each, he says, thrives in the wilds and as garden weeds across the globe.

"There's two principal myths about shamrock: that it's unique to Ireland, and that it never flowers," Nelson said by telephone.

"But you can find it easily from Tasmania to North America to the mountains of South Africa. It's probably growing outside my front door," said Nelson, who's now vacationing on a volcanic island off the coast of Morocco.

Chris Rea › Shamrock Diaries

In waves of people you can lose your feet
You've got to stay hard, to the ground
It gets so easy now to lose your way
When you're ever outward bound
A church bell ringing in the fading light
Stops you dead like a cold steel wall
The ghost of yesteryears is toughing you
And as sure as God you'll fall
And I see me and I see you
I see it all just like it used to be
And all the reasons why it started out
Hit you hard with every bell
The choir practice in the empty hall
Is a sound that you know so well
Like something lost inside your overcoat
You find it later, by mistake
You lost it all a thousand years ago
And you pray it's not too late
And I see me and I see you
I see it all just like it used to be
And I see me and I see you
I see it all just like a diary

Now I remember everything
Yea I remember how it used to be
With every note that choirboy sings
And I see me and I see you
I see it all just like it used to be
