Going out to eat and watch the Atlantic.

Later, all.

And how was the ocean, dear Letty?
I am considering taking my next ocean voyage from Oslo, Norway, to Liverpool, England by way of the isles of the Hebrides.

Christoforus Colon? Every schoolboy kno the names of his ships.

[by the way: a good few years ago there was, on British TV, an advertisement for the Milk Marketing Board with the slogan "Drinka Pinta Milka Day"

And through that, the pint bottle of milk became universally known and referred to as a "pinta"

While watching boats at the Caledonian canal one day on holiday, we saw one called the Pinta. My aunt overheard a woman remark "Just look over there. Imaging calling a beautiful boat like that after a milk bottle!"]

I think there was a song in the 1950s, and it may have been by Guy Mitchell among others, called (or having a refrain which went) "The Pinta, The Nina, and the Santa Maria"

Not heard much these days.

I loved Guy Mitchell:

"I worked in a London Bank
Respectable position"

-from "She Wears Red Feathers"
They don't write lyrics like that any more.

She Wears Red Feathers

She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt)
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt)
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love in her heart for me

I work in a London bank, respectable position
From nine to three they serve you tea
But ruin your disposition
Each night of music calls, rather lost I seem
And once a pearl of a native girl came smilin' right at me

She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love in her heart for me

Goodbye to the London bank, I started in a-sailin'
The fourteenth day from Mandalay I spied her from the railin'
She knew I was on my way, waited, and was true
She said "You son of an Englishman, I've dreamed each night of you"

She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love in her heart for me

I went to her Ma and Pa and said I loved her only
And they both said we could be wed, oh, what a ceremony
An elephant brought her in, placed her by my side
While six baboons got out bassoons and played "Here Comes the Bride"

I'm back here in London town and, though it may sound silly
She's here with me and you should see us walk down Picadilly
The boys at the London bank kinda hold their breath
She sits with me and sips her tea which tickles them to death

She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She wears red feathers and a hooly-hooly skirt
She lives on just cokey-nuts and fish from the sea
A rose in her hair, a gleam in her eyes
And love (and love) in her heart (in her heart) for me

Good morning, WA2K listeners and fans.

Thanks to edgar for the Beatles' Paperback Writer, and to Try for the Rod Stewart sailing song and the answer to Christopher's ships.

Hey, McTag and Walter. Don't remember that Guy Mitchell, but Raggedy and I remember other songs by that dude.

I'm afraid, folks, that Letty had too good a time last evening and the Atlantic was beautiful, but a chilly wind drove us inside, more's the pity.

The music was wonderful, however.

Wow! The hamburgers will be leaving and having fun without us. Bon Voyage, you two.

Santa Maria was indeed a beautiful caravel:

http://madeira-tourist.com/images/boats/santamaria/aerial.jpg

If almost everybody knows the three caravels' names, much less know that Colomb married the Madeira governor's daughter.

Our friend, the Hawkman, probably knows that, he lived in Madeira for a few years...

Well, my goodness, there's our Francis. Welcome back, Paris.

You're right; not many people know that he married a governor's daughter from Maderia, at least I didn't. Some time back, I read that Columbus was a mercenary for Spain.

Indeed that caravel is lovely, and thanks for the picture.

And only less know that he started his career in the Portuguese merchant marine, before he and his brother Bartholomew became chart makers in Lisbon.

Guy Mitchell had quite a few well recieved recordings, including this:

Well, I never felt more like singin' the blues
'cause I never thought that I'd ever lose
Your love dear, why'd you do me this way

Well, I never felt more like cryin' all night
'cause everythin's wrong, and nothin' ain't right
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

The moon and stars no longer shine
The dream is gone I thought was mine
There's nothin' left for me to do
But cry-y-y-y over you (cry over you)

Well, I never felt more like runnin' away
But why should I go 'cause I couldn't stay
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Well, I never felt more like singin' the blues
'cause I never thought that I'd ever lose
Your love dear, why'd you do me this way

Well, I never felt more like cryin' all night
'cause everythin's wrong, and nothin' ain't right
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Oh, the moon and stars no longer shine
The dream is gone I thought was mine
There's nothin' left for me to do
But cry-y-y-y over you (cry over you)

Well, I never felt more like runnin' away
But why should I go 'cause I couldn't stay
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Good Day to all.

Quoting Letty: "Hey, McTag and Walter. Don't remember that Guy Mitchell, but Raggedy and I remember other songs by that dude."

Replying to Letty's quote: I was so secretive back then. Laughing The pawnshop is still here, but the clock is gone.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Guy Mitchell
Written by Bob Merrill

Peaked at # 4 in 1952

(There's a pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
And I walk up and down 'neath the clock
(By the pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
But I ain't got a thing left to hock

She was peaches, she was honey, and she cost me all my money
'cause a whirl 'round the town was her dream (was her dream)
Took her dancin', took her dinin' till her blue eyes were shinin'
With the sights that they never had seen (never seen)
If you should run into a golden-haired angel
And ask her tonight for a date
She'll tell you somewhere there's a rich millionaire
Who is calling again about eight

(There's a pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
And I've just gotta get five or ten (five or ten)
(From the pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
Gotta be with my angel again

(I heard that the Sparrow in the Treetop is gone, too. )

Today, I've chosen Sammy Kaye, (1910-1987) as the birthday celeb. (Does anyone remember him?)

http://www.redskybooks.net/rsb455/images/items/006676.jpg

One of Sammy's big hits:
THE OLD LAMPLIGHTER

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

You'd hear the patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the street
His smile would cheer a lonely heart you see
If there were sweethearts in the park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark
Remembering the days that used to be
For he recalled when things were new
He loved someone who loved him too
Who walks with him alone in memories

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

Now if you look up in the sky
You'll understand the reason why
The little stars at night are all aglow
He turns them on when night is near
He turns them off when dawn is here
The little man we left so long ago
He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter of long, long ago

My word, edgar. I just found out that Guy Mitchell died in 1999, but not much info on his obit.

I had no idea that he did Singing the Blues. Somehow I figured that was a Hank Williams song, but I was getting the blues mixed up, I guess.

For seaglass(guess who)

BLUSH OF LOVE

If love can make a heartbeat flush
The glowing cheeks in reddish blush
Then it is this, my radiant face
A mirror of love's deep embrace

For love brings heat and trembling chills
A breathless sigh, a cringe of thrills
A heart that skips a beat or two
Each time that I remember you

Although we parted long ago
A burst of heat, a subtle glow
Quite unexpectedly appears
When thoughts of you dissolve the years

Some day when all is said and done
And skies are filled with scarlet sun
I'll spend the twilight of my days
Imbued in red of glowing rays

And in the blush of sunset's cast
I will confess my love at last

I'm glad that I discovered her.

I woke this morning about 4:30 a.m. to see the first snow since last year. about 1" has fallen and is melting fast. kinda pretty really and the wind has stopped but my peach tree is in full bloom. On a bringt note, last fall we called public service (gas and elec) and went on average billing which means we pay one set amount every month based on past use and price increases, well yesterday we got a notice that the estimate was too high/we are using less gas so we are paying 90$ monthly more than we are consuming, we will continue to pay the original amount and built up an excess for next year. I like that.

Hey, dys. Thanks for the weather report, cowboy. I do the averaging thing as well, but mine is much higher than it should be. I need to learn to read the meter, I guess.

Well, listeners, you hear it all here on our little radio. Nice to see all our European friends back with us.
