Enrico Caruso
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enrico Caruso (February 25, 1873-August 2, 1921) was one of the most famous tenors in the history of opera. Caruso was also the most popular singer in any genre in the first twenty years of the twentieth century and one of the pioneers of recorded music. Caruso's popular recordings and his extraordinary voice, known for its range, power, and beauty, made him one of the best-known stars of his time.

During his career, he made nearly 260 78 rpm recordings and made millions of dollars from the sale of his records. While Caruso sang at many of the world's great opera houses including La Scala in Milan and Covent Garden in London, he is best known as the leading male singer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for seventeen years.

Life and career

Born in Naples, Italy, Caruso began his career in that city in 1894. The first major role that he created came in Giordano's "Fedora" (Milan, 17 November 1898).

In 1903, with the help of his agent, the banker Pasquale Simonelli, he went to New York City to sing with the New York Metropolitan Opera. The following year Caruso began his lifelong association with the Victor Talking-Machine Company; his star relationships with both the Metropolitan and Victor would last until 1920.

Caruso was one of the first star vocalists to make numerous recordings. He and the disc phonograph did much to promote each other in the first two decades of the 20th century. His 1902 recording of Vesti la giubba from Leoncavallo's Pagliacci was the world's first gramophone record to sell a million copies. Caruso could not sing high C, and he often transposed his roles (La Juive, for example), down.

Caruso died in 1921, from what is thought to be complications of pleurisy. He is buried in Naples.

His life was the subject of a highly fictionalized Hollywood motion picture, The Great Caruso, in 1951.

Since his death, numerous compilation albums of his work have been created.

Gert Fröbe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl-Gerhart Fröber, better known as Gert Fröbe (born February 25, 1913 in Oberplanitz (now Zwickau), Saxony; died September 5, 1988 in Munich), was a German actor who starred in many films, including the James Bond film Goldfinger as Auric Goldfinger and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as Baron Bomburst. He made several appearances in big all-star casts in the 1960s, including the films The Longest Day and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Fröbe could not speak English and was ultimately dubbed in many of his classic roles.

While Fröbe was a member of the Nazi Party before and during WWII, he aided German Jews by hiding them from the Gestapo before 1945. Owing to his connection to the Nazi Party, the film Goldfinger was banned in Israel until he was publicly thanked by a Jewish family.

Fröbe died on September 5, 1988 after suffering a heart attack.

One winter year, these two little fleas headed for the
warm sunny beaches of California to escape the cold.
The first flea got there and started rubbing suntan
lotion on his little flea arms and his little flee legs.

Just then, the second flea arrived just a shiverin'
and a shakin'.

The first flea asked, "What the hell happened to you?"

To which the second flea replied "I just rode out here
on a bikers mustache and I'm so very coldddd!"

The first flea said, "Don't you know the special trick
to gettin here, first you go to the airport, go
straight to the ladies commode, wait for a pretty
young stewardess to come along, and when she sits down
you climb right up in there where its nice and warm".

The second flea agreed that this was a grand idea.

The next winter comes along and it was time for the
fleas to head for the sunny beaches again.

The first flea arrived and began putting suntan lotion
on his little flea arms and his little flea legs.

About that time, the second flea arrived again just a
shiverin', shakin', and mumbling about how cold he was.

The first flea exclaimed "Didn't you learn anything
that I taught you about getting here nice and warm?"

To which the second flea replied, "I did just as you
said; I went to the ladies commode and this pretty
stewardess came in and sat down, I climbed right up in
there and it was so very warm.

Next thing I know we stop at a bar and I fell asleep.
All of a sudden I woke and there I was, right back on
that bikers moustache!

Oh, my gawd, listeners. Our Bob is really naughty today. Laughing

Thanks, Boston for the giggle and the bio's.

About the only celeb that I was not familiar with was Gert Frobe. I am amazed that he was Auric Goldfinger and at how heroic he was. Also a salute to the Jewish family who stepped up to thank him.

I love Renoir, because as a kid I use to color his ballerinas with fervor and ALWAYS stayed inside the lines. <smile>

Unfortunately, folks, I could not find the beautiful ballet scene for which I was searching, but this one is lovely:

Letty, I was only pulling your leg about the foot, I don't want to go out on a limb. Laughing

Special request:
Mandolin rain

B. r. hornsby/john hornsby

The song came and went
Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
I laughed and she'd smile
It would last for awhile
You don't know what you got till you lose it all again

Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

A cool evening dance
Listening to the bluegrass band takes the chill
>from the air till they play the last song
I'll do my time
Keeping you off my mind but there's moments
That I find, I'm not feeling so strong

Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

Running down by the lakeshore
She did love the sound of a summer storm
It played on the lake like a mandolin
Now it's washing her away again

Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

The boat's steaming in
I watch the sidewheel spin and i
Think about her when I hear that whistle blow
I can't change my mind
I knew all the time that she'd go
But that's a choice I made long ago

Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

I think we could all use some Joe Cocker today:

Hold On, I'll Be Back For You It Wont Be Long
But For Now There's Something There That's Calling Me
So Take Me Down That Lonesome Road
Point Me East And Let Me Go
This Suitcase Weighs Me Down With Memories

I Just Want To Be The One You Run To
I Just Want To Be The One You Come To
I Just Want To Be There With Someone When The Night Comes
Lets Put All Our Cares Behind Us
And Go Where They'll Never Find Us
I Just Want To Be There Beside You
When The Night Comes
When The Night Comes

Two Spirits In The Nigh
We Can Leave Before The Morning Light
When Theirs Nothing Left To Lose
Theirs Nothing Left To Fear
So Meet Me On The Edge Of Town
Won't Keep You Waiting I'll Be Around
Then You And I Will Just Roll Right Out Of Town

I Just Want To Be The One You Run To
I Just Want To Be The One You Come To
I Just Want To Be With Someone When The Night Comes
Lets Put All Our Cares Behind Us
And Go Where They'll Never Find Us
I Just Want To Be There Beside You
When The Night Comes
When The Night Comes

I Know There Will Be A Time For You And I
Just Take My Hand And Run Away
Pick Up All The Pieces Of This Shattered Dream
We'll Make It Out Some Day
We'll Be Coming Back To Stay

I Want To Be The One You Run To
To Be The One You Come To
I Want To Be The One You Run To

I Want To Be The One You Run To
I Want To Be The One You Come To
I Just Want To Be There With Someone
When The Night Comes
Lets Put All Our Cares Behind Us
And Go Where They'll Never Find Us
I Just Want To Be There Beside You
When The Night Comes
When The Night Comes

tryagain, Leg; foot, and limb? You punster munster, you.

Love the mandolin rain, buddy. In our Virginia home we had a two story brick house with a tin roof. Nothing, folks, and I mean nothing could lull you to sleep like that sound.

Ah, shari, your Joe reminds me of another road:

Beatles
The Long And Winding Road

The long and winding road that leads to your door,
Will never disappear,
I've seen that road before It always leads me here,
leads me to your door.
The wild and windy night the rain washed away,
Has left a pool of tears crying for the day.
Why leave me standing here, let me know the way
Many times I've been alone and many times I've cried
Anyway you'll never know the many ways I've tried, but
Still they lead me back to the long and winding road
You left me standing here a long, long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here, lead me to you door
Da, da, da, da--

The Pretender

I'm going to rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
I'm going to pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again
Amen
Say it again
Amen

I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening
I've been aware of the time going by
They say in the end it's the wink of an eye
And when the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again
Amen

Caught between the longing for love
And the struggle for the legal tender
Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring
And the junk man pounds his fender
Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light
And the children solemnly wait
For the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening
Strolls the Pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
Begin and end there

Ah the laughter of the lovers
As they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others
But to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams
Sail out of sight

I'm going to find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
Get it up again

I'm going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Thought true love could have been a contender
Are you there?
Say a prayer for the Pretender
Who started out so young and strong
Only to surrender

Awesome song, Rex. "...who started out so young and strong only to surrender....' that line said a lot, Maine.

Thanks, buddy. I guess all of us here are pretenders, in a way.

and, listeners, let's listen to a segway

This version by Queen

Words and music by buck ram

Oh yes I'm the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Pretending I'm doing well (ooh ooh)
My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell

Oh yes I'm the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Adrift in a world of my own (ooh ooh)
I play the game but to my real shame
You've left me to dream all alone

Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal

Ooh ooh yes I'm the great pretender (ooh ooh)
Just laughing and gay like a clown (ooh ooh)
I seem to be what I'm not (you see)
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around

Yeah ooh hoo
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal

Oh yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown (ooh ooh)
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're
Pretending that you're still around

dj is right. Some songs make better poems.

Ill stand by you
Pretenders
Oh, Why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
Cause I've seen the dark side too.
When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
could make me love you less
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

So,
If your mad, get mad
Don't hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
But hey, what you've got to hide
I get angry too
But I'm a lot like you
When you're standing at the crossroads
Don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
Cause even if your wrong...

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
And when,
When the night falls on you baby
Your feeling all alone
Walking on your own

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I`ll stand by you

Who cares when the very bestest girls are right here! Razz

"punster munster"

Why Letty, I do believe you have invented a new term. Way to go girl! Cool

The Eagles lyrics
Saturday Night

Seems like a dream now, it was so long ago
The moon burned so bright and the time went so slow
And I swore that I loved her and gave her a ring
The bluebird was high on the wing
Whatever happened to Saturday night
Finding a sweetheart and holding her tight?
She said,"Tell me, oh, tell me, was I alright?"
Whatever happened to Saturday night?
The years brought the railroad
It ran by my door
Now there's boards on the windows
And dust on the floor
And she passes the time at another man's side
And I pass the time with my pride
What a tangled web we weave
Go 'round with circumstance
Someone show me how to tell the dancer
From the dance
What ever happened
To Saturday night?
Choosin' a friend and loosin' a fight
She said,"Tell me, oh, tell me, are you alright?"
Whatever happened to Saturday night?
Whatever happened to Saturday night?

Thanks for the "go girl" try. Something tells me that my little coined phrase won't make it in the OED. <smile>

Ah, the Eagles again. Love that one.

One of my favorite Eagle songs:

Peaceful Easy Feeling

I like the way your sparkling earrings lay,
against your skin, it's so brown
and I wanna sleep with you
in the desert tonight
with a billion stars all around
'cause I gotta peaceful easy feeling
and I know you won't let me down
'cause I'm already standing on the
ground
And I found out a long time ago
what a woman can do to your soul
Ah, but she can't take you anyway
You don't already know how to go
and I gotta peaceful, easy feeling
and I know you won't let me down
'cause I'm already standing on the ground
I get this feeling I may know you
as a lover and a friend
but this voice keeps whispering
in my other ear, tells me
I may never see you again
'cause I get a peaceful, easy feeling
and I know you won't let me down
'cause I'm already standing on the ground
'cause I'm already standing...
on the ground
oooo, oooo

That can also be interpreted from the female side as well, folks.

Another Saturday Night :: Sam Cooke

Another Saturday nigt and I ain't got nobody
I got some money 'cause i just got paid
How I wish I had someone to talk to
I'm in awful way

I got in town a month ago, I seen a lotta girls since then
If I could meet 'em I could get 'em but as yet I haven't met 'em
That's why I'm in the shape I'm in

Here another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody
I got some money 'cause I just got paid
How I wish I had someone to talk to
I'm in awful way

Another fella told me he had a sister who looked just fine
Instead of being my deliverance, she had a strange resemblance
to a cat named Frankenstein

Here another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody
I got some money 'cause I just got paid
How I wish I had some chick to talk to
I'm in awful way

[Here it is another weekend and I ain't got nobody
Man if I was back home I'd be swinging
Two chicks on my arm
Aww yeah
Listen to me huh]

It's hard on a fella, when he don't know his way around
If I don't find me a honey to help me spend my money
I'm gonna have to blow this town

Here it's another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody
I got some money 'cause I just got paid
How I wish I had some chick to talk to
I'm in awful way

(chorus to fade)

YOUNG GIRL

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl,
You're much too young, girl
With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough
To give me Love
And now it hurts to know the truth, Oh,

Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it is wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes, Oh,

So hurry home to your mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far, Oh,
Young girl

I don't know from which side you interpreted this from.

Bob Dylan

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you're the best thing that he's ever seen

Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
