Here is the "original" of that song, if such a thing can be claimed in the world of song

Some additonal notes: (taken from Shanties of the Seven Seas and Cantaria) This is a Capstan Chantey. It is also well known in the navy, where it is sung as a song, chanteys not being permitted. Captain Kettlewell, R.N., who has made a special study of this song, has told Sharp that when it is sung on board ship, the conclusion of the chorus is, or always used to be, greeted with a shot of "Heave and pawl!". (The pawl is the catch which prevents the recoil of the windlass).
The distances given from Ushant to Scilly by different collectors are:
34 leagues - Davis & Tozer, Hugill;
35 leagues - Sharp, whall, Sampson, Shell;
45 leagues - Bullen.
Sharp and Whall give 45 fathoms as the depth of the Channel. A version altered to suit a Bluenose ship approaching its homeport was to be heard among Nova Scotian seamen fifty years ago.

MY SON, MY SON - 05/11/1954

(My son, my son)
My son, my son you're everything to me
My son, my son you're all I hoped you'd be
My son, my son my only pride and joy
God bless and keep you safe
My own, my precious boy

For all the care and heartache
Life has brought to me
One precious gift has made it all worthwhile
For heaven blessed and with great joy rewarded me
For I can look and see my own beloved son

My son, my son just do the best you can
Then in my heart I'm sure
You'll face life like a man

My pride and joy
My life, my boy
My son, my son

You'll Never Walk Alone

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll Never Walk Alone,
You Will Never Walk Alone.

Good morning WA2K listeners and contributors.

My goodness, all. Our studio is awash with songs and sea history. I do believe that I recall Robert Shaw singing "New Spanish Ladies" in the movie,Jaws.

Hmmm, even our studio is listing a bit to port.

Now someone explain this two man clique to Letty while she gets some coffee.

Incidentally, Rex. Thanks for the song "Yours" and the information about Angela Lansbury.

Timely news in the world of ships:

Archeologists Find Ancient Ship Remains Fri Jan 27, 7:17 PM ET

CAIRO, Egypt - An American-Italian team of archaeologists has found the remains of 4,000-year-old ships that used to carry cargo between Pharaonic Egypt and the mysterious, exotic land of Punt, the Supreme Council of Antiquities has announced.

The ships' remains were found during a five-year excavation of five caves south of the Red Sea port of Safaga, about 300 miles southeast of Cairo, the chairman of the supreme council, Zahi Hawass, said in a statement late Thursday.

The archaeologists, who came from Boston and East Naples universities, found Pharaonic seals from the era of Sankhkare Mentuhotep III, one of seven rulers of the 11th dynasty, which lasted from about 2133 B.C. to 1991 B.C.. They also found wooden boxes, covered with gypsum, bearing the inscription "Wonders of the land of Punt."

For the ancient Egyptians, Punt was a source of prized goods such as incense, ivory, ebony, gum and the hides of giraffes and panthers that were worn by temple priests. But the precise location of Punt remains a mystery. Historians have variously placed it in Sudan, Eritrea or Somalia.

Hawass said the remains showed the ancient Egyptians were "excellent ship builders" and that they had a fleet capable of sailing to remote lands.

PRIDE AND JOY

BY

BABYFACE

You're always there for me
Whenever I fall
Whenever I'm in need
You always know when to call
When I've come to my ends
I know I can depend on your loving me
Your touching me
Constant faith and trust in me

Chorus:
And how can I tell you
How I love you so
Oh darling
I just wanna tell you
That you're my pride and joy

You've been right there for me
Through thick and the thin
You were the strength for me
You wouldn't let me give in
At the end of the road
Somehow I've always known
That your trust in me
Your love in me
Got me to believe in me

Chorus:
And how can I tell you
How I love you so
Oh darling
I just wanna tell you
That you're my pride and joy

Bridge:
You are my first and last thought of the day
You are my heartbeat
Without you I can't breathe
I can't imagine me without you in my life
You are my one soul inspriation
Without you I'll just die

Chorus:
And How can I tell you
How I love you so
Oh darling I just wanna tell you
That you're my pride and joy

Repeat to Fade

Lovely song, spidergal. It's always nice to see Miss India in our studio, right folks?

For you from Tagore:

Here lies the ocean of peace,
Helmsman, launch the boat.
You will always be the comrade.
Take, O take him to your heart.
In the path of the Infinite
will shine the "Dhruba-tara". (North Star)
Giver of freedom, your forgiveness, your mercy
will be wealth inexhaustible
in the eternal journey.
May the mortal bonds perish,
May the vast universe take him in its arms,
And may he know in his fearless heart
The great unknown.

It would be welcome here, Miss India.

Remember, listeners. Our station incorporates everything.

How about a good morning/afternoon song.

We've only just begun to live,
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way.
And yes, We've just begun.

Before the rising sun we fly,
So many roads to choose
We start our walking and learn to run.
And yes, We've just begun.

Sharing horizons that are new to us,
Watching the signs along the way,
Talking it over just the two of us,
Working together day to day
Together.

And when the evening comes we smile,
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow,
And yes, We've just begun.

Good day WA2K.

Hey, I just found out that Mikhail Baryshnikov was born twice. Yes, on January 27 and again on January 28, 1948. That's nice. A talented guy like that deserves to be born twice. Since I posted his pic yesterday, I've chosen for today:

Born January 28, 1981 - Happy Birthday Elijah Wood

He was such a cutie - Remember Radio Flyer? So sad.

and on to fame as Frodo Baggins:

Great pictures, Raggedy. Thanks again, PA. Do you mean that Elijah Wood was the kid in Radio Flyer? Shocked

I had forgotten that movie, folks. Frankly, I really believed that there was only ONE child hiding from an abusive father by creating another persona.

If I recall correctly, I think Jessica Lang had children by that Russian ballet star. In fact, I met them.

Joseph Mazzello was the actor who played Elijah Wood's abused brother in Radio Flyer. Elijah Wood's character (as an adult) narrates the story. If I recall, I think we discussed this last year. Very Happy

From IMDb:

A father reminisces about his childhood when he and his younger brother moved to a new town with their mother, her new husband and their dog, Shane. When the younger brother is subjected to physical abuse at the hands of their brutal stepfather, Mike decides to convert their toy trolley, the "Radio Flyer", into a plane to fly him to safety.

I like to imagine that the little fellow did fly safely away. But......

You met Jessica Lange's children?

That's right, Raggedy, I do believe that we discussed that movie. I have an odd way of looking at plot developments and resolutions. I think my ideas are far better concerning the children and would justify the rather bizarre ending.

Yes, I met Jessica Lang and Sam Shepherd at Mountain Lake Resort. Many celebs came to that primitive resort looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and the glare of the spotlight.

It's been a while, listeners, since we had a dedication song. How about to our Raggedy:

Artist: Lyrics
Song: Finale (The Impossible Dream) Lyrics

ALDONZA
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,

PADRE
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go...

ANTONIA
To run where the brave dare not go,
Though the goal be forever too far.

SANCHO, ANTONIA
To try, though you're wayworn and weary,

PADRE, ANTONIA, SANCHO, BARBER
To reach the unreachable star.

ALL
To reach the unreachable star,
Though you know it's impossibly high,
To live with your heart striving upward
To a far, unattainable sky!

and, folks, from what play cometh that song?

It's easy dedicating things to our research artist, Raggedy. As I told fbaezer, Don Quixote was required reading in undergrad school, and of course you have the correct answer.

I was almost certain that el Greco did a painting of the windmill man, but perhaps it was in the windmills of MY mind. <smile>

Boy From The Country

Because he called the forest "Brother," because he called the Earth his mother,
they drove him out into the rain.
Some people even said that the boy from the country was insane.

Because he spoke to the fish in the creek. He tried to tell us that the animals could speak.
Who knows? Perhaps they do.
How do you know they don't just because they've never spoken to you?

Boy from the country left his home when he was young, boy from the country, he loves the sun.

He tried to tell us that we should love the land.
We just turned our heads and laughed. You see we did not understand.
Sometimes I think the boy from the country is the only one who sees,
'cause the boy from the country doesn't want to see the forest for the trees.

Boy from the country left his home when he was young, boy from the country, he loves the sun.
