letty : growing up in hamburg, we had a painting very much like the one you posted in our living room.
during the 1930's there were still a number of sailships in the port of hamburg - mainly bringing saltpeter and guano from chile. i still have some old black and white photigraphs my dad took. i guess i'll have to learn how to transfer them for posting.
here is a painting of the sailship "pamir" - one of the "flying P liners" of the laieisz line; all their sailships stated with the letter P : preussen, pamir, passat ... hbg

Hmmm, hamburger. Saltpeter and guano. Have to smile a little at a memory of my son and his obsession with making gun powder.

That is lovely, however. My mom had really tacky pictures, but I can remember almost every one of them.

Sorry if this stretches things a bit. <smile>

making gunpowder ... tried that as boys. all we had was sulphur and charcoal - no saltpeter. so we jammed the stuff into empty 20mm cartridges that the american fighter planes ejected. punched the ends shut and set the contraptions on a little portable spirit stove ... as soon as the sulphur ignited , off it went like a chinese rocket ... pffft ! (scared the heck out of an old caretaker who was standing nearby - he must have been at least 50 ! such an old guy ! )
what fun it was to be young and foolish. hbg

Goodnight, my friends.

The End Of The Trail
Robert Service
Life, you've been mighty good to me,
Yet here's the end of the trail;
No more mountain, moor and sea,
No more saddle and sail.
Waves a-leap in the laughing sun
Call to me as of yore. . . .
Alas! my errant days are done:
I'll rove no more, no more.

Life, you've cheered me all the way;
You've been my bosom friend;
But gayest dog will have his day,
And biggest binge must end.
Shorebound I watch and see afar
A wistful isle grow wan,
While over is a last lone star
Dims out in lilac dawn.

Life, you've been wonderful to me,
But fleetest foot must fail;
The hour must come when all will see
The last lap of the trail.
Yet holding in my heart a hymn
Of praise for gladness gone,
Serene I wait my star to dim
In the glow of the Greater Dawn.

No, folks. Not the end of the trail, just the end of the day. <smile>

My Mama had this one as well, hamburger:

I have a mansion
Forget the price
Ain't never been there
They tell me it's nice

I live in hotels
Tear out the walls
I have accountants
Pay for it all

They say I'm crazy but I have a good time
I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
Life's been good to me so far

My Maserati
Does one eighty-five
I lost my license
Now I don't drive

I have a limo
Ride in the back
I lock the doors
In case I'm attacked

I'm making records
My fans they can't wait
They write me letters
Tell me I'm great

So I got me an office
Gold records on the wall
ust leave a message
Maybe I'll call

Lucky I'm sane after all I've been through
(Everybody sing) I'm cool (He's cool)
I can't complain but sometimes I still do
Life's been good to me so far

I go to parties
Sometimes until four
It's hard to leave
When you can't find the door

It's tough to handle
This fortune and fame
Everybody's so different
I haven't changed

They say I'm lazy but it takes all my time
(Everybody sing) Oh yeah (Oh yeah)
I keep on going guess I'll never know why
Life's been good to me so far baby,
inside the Sad Cafe.

Having just returned from LA I begin to get the feeling I know this song:

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place (background)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year (background)
You can find it here
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She's got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place
Such a lovely Place (background)
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise (background)
Bring your alibies

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

Well, our McTag is back again. Hey, Brit. I do know that a cutty sark is some type short garment as well as a tall ship with masts. Am I right?

Something perhaps that an auld Scottish sailor would wear on this:

The ship (and therefore the whisky later) was named after the nickname of the witch in the narrative poem (Tam O'Shanter, by Robert Burns)

The witch got her nickname because of the short shirt she was wearing as a night-dress.

The short shirt was the original cutty sark, in the Scots tongue.

Good morning WA2K radio fans and contributors.

First let me say to our hamburger, that it is the things like that picture that a person really prizes when inherited from someone they love. I have two pictures that I covet, which my mom left me.I thought, at first, that they were Gody prints, but they aren't. They are called La Mode Illustree.

http://images.art.com/images/-/Huard/La-Mode-Illustree--C10343178.jpeg

edgar, I know that song. Love it, Texas, and thanks.

My word, there's our Nick back from California. Hey, buddy, we have missed you here. The Hotel California is a good one. Thanks for playing it. <smile>

Aha, McTag. Thanks for the background about the witch and the cutty sark. I should have known that one, Manchester. Perhaps I was thinking of middy?

Anne Jeffreys
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Anne Jeffreys (born January 26, 1923 in Goldsboro, North Carolina) is an American actress and singer.

Born Anne Carmichael, she was trained at a young age under her mother's management, and entered the entertainment industry by signing with the John Robert Powers agency as a junior model, although she is an accomplished soprano. She got her first role in the musical Fun for the Money. This led to her first movie role in I Married an Angel (1942), starring Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald.

She starred in several movies in the 1940s, for example in the musical Step Lively (1942) opposite Frank Sinatra. She failed to make a real impact however and her career faltered. She instead focused on her stage career, starring in productions such as the Broadway musical My Romance. She married actor Robert Sterling in 1951, and they were both cast in the 1953 sitcom Topper.

After a semi-retirement in the 1960s, she returned to star in television, appearing in episodes of such TV series as L.A. Law and Murder, She Wrote, as well as soap operas such as Bright Promise and General Hospital. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in The Delphi Bureau (1972). From 1984 to 1985, she starred in the short-lived Aaron Spelling series Finder of Lost Loves. She also appeared in Baywatch as David Hasselhoff's mother. Her most recent role has been on the TV soap opera, Port Charles.

She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1501 Vine Street.

Paul Newman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Paul Leonard Newman (born January 26, 1925) is an Oscar winning American actor and film director.

Family Background

Newman was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, near Cleveland, to Theresa Fetzko (a Hungarian-born Catholic, who became a Christian Scientist) and Arthur S. Newman, a successful sporting goods store owner, who was born in the U.S. to a Hungarian Jewish father, Simon Newman, and a Polish Jewish mother, Hannah Cohn. He has one brother, Arthur Newman.

Marriages

He has married twice:

1) Jackie Witte (1949-1958) with whom he had a son, Scott Newman, who died in 1978, and two daughters, Susan Kendall Newman and Stephanie Newman. Susan is a stage actress and philanthropist.

2) Joanne Woodward on 29 January 1958. They have three daughters: Melissa Newman, Nell Potts and Clea Newman.

Career

Newman served in the Navy in World War II, in the Pacific theater. Prior to entering the service, he attended Ohio University in Athens, OH. He completed his degree at Kenyon College after the war and later studied acting at Yale University. While he was attending graduate school at Yale, he became a successful stage actor on Broadway. His first movie, The Silver Chalice (1954) has been described by Newman as the "worst movie of the entire 1950s decade," but he rebounded with a series of acclaimed roles.

With his piercing blue eyes and handsome chiseled features he could have been just a romantic leading man but he wanted much more than that. Newman was one of the few actors who successfully made the transition from 1950s to the 1960s and 1970s cinema. His rebellious persona translated well to a subsequent generation.

Awards

Newman has been nominated for an Academy Award nine times as an actor, in addition to the producer nomination he received for Rachel, Rachel. Of his acting nominations, he won once, for his leading role on The Color of Money in 1986. That award came a year after he won an honorary Oscar for his "many and memorable and compelling screen performances."

Paul has directed his wife, Joanne Woodward, in several films, such as the 1968 film Rachel, Rachel, a film for which he was nominated for an Oscar as producer, and the 1987 adaptation of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie.

He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his lead role in a 2003 production of Our Town.

In 2006, he won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor (Television) for his work in Empire Falls.

Auto racing

He first became interested in the sport ("the first thing that I ever found I had any grace in") while filming Winning, a 1968 film, despite the fact that he is color-blind.

Newman's first professional event was in 1972, in Thompson, Connecticut. He ran the 24 hours of Le Mans once in 1979 and finished second in a Porsche 935 of Dick Barbour thanks to the driving skills of German team mate Rolf Stommelen.

Onward from the mid seventies to the early nineties, he would drive for the Bob Sharp Racing team, racing mainly Nissans. He however would become heavily associated with the brand during the eighties, even appearing in commercials for them. Although they named a Skyline model after him, calling it the Newman, he was most of all associated with the Z series, where he got most of his race victories and championship titles from.

At the age of 70, he became the oldest driver to be part of a winning team in a major sanctioned race, the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1995. Newman told an Associated Press journalist in March 2005 that he'll "probably race for another year".

Also, Newman co-founded Newman/Haas Racing with Carl Haas, a CART Championship auto racing team, in 1983.

Philanthropy

Newman founded Newman's Own, a line of food products, in 1982. The brand started with salad dressing, and has expanded to include pasta sauce, lemonade, popcorn, and salsa, among other things. Newman donates the proceeds, after taxes, to charity. As of early 2005, the franchise has resulted in $175 million in donations. He co-wrote a memoir about the subject, Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good (ISBN 0385508026).

One beneficiary of his philanthropy is the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a residential summer camp for seriously ill children, which is located between Ashford and Eastford in Connecticut. Newman cofounded the camp in 1986; it was named after the gang in his film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Newman's college fraternity, Phi Kappa Tau, adopted "Hole in the Wall" as their "national philanthropy" in 1995. One camp has expanded to become several Hole in the Wall Camps in the U.S., Ireland, France and Israel.

Miscellaneous

For his strong support of Eugene McCarthy in 1968 (and effective use of television commercials in California), Newman was 19th on Richard Nixon's enemies list. He has said that this is one of his life's proudest achievements.

In recent years, students at Bates College and Princeton University have marked a day (called "Newman Day" at Bates, "Newman's Day" at Princeton) during which students try to drink 24 beers in 24 hours while continuing with their regular activities. The newfound tradition has been held in January at Bates since the early 1990s, and on April 24 at Princeton since the late 1990s. The event is named after Newman for unknown reasons, though most often cited are a comment attributed to him ("24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not.") and a well-known egg-eating contest in Cool Hand Luke (1967). Through his attorney, Newman has asked both universities to end the tradition, a request they have difficulty honouring since the event has no official campus sponsor. Newman personally wrote a letter to his alma mater Kenyon College in 2005 to encourage community service instead of binge drinking.

Detached from Hollywood, Newman makes his home in Connecticut with his wife Joanne Woodward most of the year. He also lives in the small town of Golden Beach, Florida.

Paul was the visual inspiration for Hal Jordan, the second Green Lantern of DC Comics introduced in the 1960s (Silver Age).

Newman's height is 5'9".

Made "Top 10 stars of the year", 14 times between 1963-1986.

Roger Vadim
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Roger Vadim (born Roger Vladmir Plemiannikov, Paris, France, January 26, 1928; died February 10, 2000), was a journalist, author, actor, screenwriter, director, and producer who launched Brigitte Bardot's career in the film And God Created Woman. The scene of Bardot dancing barefoot on a table remains one of the most erotic scenes in French cinema.

His White Russian father, Igor Plemiannikov, immigrated from Ukraine, became a naturalized French citizen, and was a vice consul of France to Egypt.

Vadim became a stage actor at the age of 16. In 1947 he became assistant writer to film director Marc Allégret.

As well as his movie achievements, Roger Vadim was celebrated for his romances/marriages to such beautiful women as actresses Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda. He also lived with Catherine Deneuve, with whom he had a child, prior to his marriage to Fonda. In addition to his theater and movie work, he wrote several books including his autobiography, D'Une Etoile a l'Autre (From One Star to the Next).

He died at 72 years of age of cancer and is buried in the St. Tropez Cemetery, Saint Tropez, France. He was survived by his wife, French actress Marie-Christine Barrault, and four children: Vanessa, born to Fonda; Christian with Deneuve; Nathalie, born to actress Annette Stroyberg; and Vania, his child with heiress Catherine Schneider.

Ellen DeGeneres
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Ellen Lee DeGeneres (born January 26, 1958) is an American actress, stand-up comedian, and, most recently, host of a syndicated talk show.

Career

Born in Metairie, Louisiana of French, English, German and Irish descent, DeGeneres began her career as a stand-up comedian and appeared in small clubs, before she was chosen in a national competition as the funniest person in America. She then appeared on late night television and comedy programs.

DeGeneres was sought out by Tonight Show booking agent/Producer Jim McCawley for her first appearance in 1986. She was the first female to ever be asked over to the couch to visit with Johnny Carson on her first visit. Jim McCawley truly believed that she was going to be a hit and often spoke in praise of her when her name was mentioned.

She also appeared as a stand-up comedian as early as on the HBO Tenth Annual Young Comedians' special, where she was introduced as an up-and-coming talent by Young Comedians' show veteran Harry Anderson.

Television

DeGeneres rose to national attention when her material was turned into the subject matter for the successful 1994-1998 sitcom, Ellen (called These Friends of Mine during its first season). The ABC show was popular in its first few seasons due in part to DeGeneres's style of quirky observational humor; it was often referred to as a female Seinfeld. Before getting her own show, she began her television career on the short-lived TV sitcom Open House (1989-1990) and Laurie Hill (1992).

Ellen's Energy Adventure

DeGeneres starred in a series of films for a show named Ellen's Energy Adventure, which is part of the Universe of Energy attraction and pavillion at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center. The film starring Ellen DeGeneres, also features Bill Nye the Science Guy, Alex Trebek, Michael Richards, and Jamie Lee Curtis. The show revolves around DeGeneres falling asleep, and finding herself in an energy-themed version of Jeopardy!, playing against an old rival (portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis) and Albert Einstein. The next film has DeGeneres hosting an educational look at energy - co hosted with Bill Nye (the science guy). The ride first opened on September 15, 1996 as Ellen's Energy Crisis, but was quickly renamed to Ellen's Energy Adventure.

Lesbian relationship

The show reached its height of attention in April 1997 when DeGeneres (and her character on the show) came out of the closet on national television and publicly declared that she was a lesbian. In spite of the controversy, or perhaps because of it, the outing episode was one of the highest-rated episodes of the show. As one of the first openly gay performers playing an openly gay character on television, she was all but forced into a role as a gay rights activist. Her sitcom began to primarily focus on her character's relationship with another woman; and even the lesbian activist Chastity Bono found the show to be "too gay". After sinking ratings, the show was canceled, and DeGeneres returned to the stand-up comedy circuit. Not forgetting the nosedive her lucrative network television show took, Ellen would later re-establish herself as a successful talk show host, this time projecting no particular sexuality and avoiding the topic altogether.

Autobiography

In 1995 she wrote an "autobiography" including reflections: "My Point...And I Do Have One".

The Ellen Show

DeGeneres returned to series TV in 2001 with a new CBS sitcom, The Ellen Show. Though her character was again a lesbian, it was not the central theme of the show. It received critical praise but low viewership and was canceled after one season.

Although her second sitcom was not a success, Ellen did receive wide exposure on November 4, 2001, when she served as hostess of the Emmy Awards-TV show. Presented following two cancellations due to fears that a showy ceremony would appear insensitive following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the show required a newer, more somber tone that at the same time allowed viewers to temporarily forget the tragedy. DeGeneres delivered this, receiving several standing ovations for her performance that evening. She memorably delivered the following line: "We're told to go on living our lives as usual, because to do otherwise is to let the terrorists win, and really, what would upset the Taliban more than a gay woman wearing a suit in front of a room full of Jews?"

Performances

DeGeneres has also performed two critically acclaimed stand-up routines. The first was called Ellen DeGeneres: The Beginning (2000) and was taped live at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Her most recent one however, which was taped in the same location, was entitled Ellen DeGeneres: Here and Now ([2003]).

Voice-overs

DeGeneres lent her voice to the role of "Dory," a fish with short-term memory loss, in the summer 2003 hit animated Pixar film Finding Nemo. The movie returned DeGeneres to the limelight, with critics giving her rave reviews. Many speculate that DeGeneres would have been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar if not for the Academy voters' seemingly suspicious attitudes towards non-live action performance work. Also narrating one of the highly successful VH1 Divas shows.

TV work

In September of 2003, DeGeneres launched a daytime television talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Amid a crop of several talk shows surfacing in 2003 and hosted by high-profile celebrities (including Sharon Osbourne and Rita Rudner), DeGeneres' show has consistently risen in the Nielsen Ratings and received widespread critical praise. DeGeneres' show was nominated for eleven Daytime Emmy Awards its freshman season, winning four, including Best Talk Show. Ellen is known for her dancing with the audience in the beginning of the show. On November 17, 2005, Ellen's show was played in reverse, similar to Memento.

Since November 2004, DeGeneres has appeared, dancing, in a new ad campaign for American Express. Since May 2005, she's been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post.

In August 2005, Ellen was selected once again as host of the 2005 Emmy ceremony, which was held on September 18, 2005. (The awards show came three weeks after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, making it the second time Ellen hosted the Emmys following a national tragedy. Because Ellen is from New Orleans, the tragedy literally hit close to home.) When she announced that she'd be again hosting the Emmys, she joked, "You know me, any excuse to put on a dress." She also hosted the Grammy Awards in 1996 and in 1997.

Personal life

DeGeneres's long-term lesbian relationship with former Another World actress Anne Heche turned into material for the lurid tabloid press. After several years in the spotlight, Heche broke up with DeGeneres and went on to marry male cameraman Coley Laffoon. DeGeneres then had a relationship with photographer Alexandra Hedison for several years, who lived opposite actor Kai Christophe Wong in Chelsea, New York. They appeared on the cover of Advocate magazine (ironically, after their split up had already been announced to the press). DeGeneres is now in a relationship with the Arrested Development star Portia de Rossi.

DeGeneris has one brother, Vance DeGeneres, who made a guest appearance on Ellen in 1994. Vance was also a correspondent for The Daily Show from 1999 to 2001.

THEY WALK AMONG US

I live in a semi rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the Deer Crossing sign on our road.
The reason:
"Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore."

From Kingman, KS.

IDIOTS IN FOOD SERVICE:
My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for "minimal lettuce." He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg. He was a Chef?
Yep...From Kansas City!

IDIOT SIGHTING:
I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, "Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge.
To which I replied, "If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?" He smiled knowingly and nodded, "That's why we ask."
Happened in Birmingham, Ala.

IDIOT SIGHTING:
The stoplight on the corner buzzes when its safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine. She asked if I knew what the buzzer was for.
I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red.
Appalled, she responded, "What on earth are blind people doing driving?!"
She was a probation officer in Wichita, KS

IDIOT SIGHTING:
At a good-bye luncheon for an old and dear coworker. She was leaving the company due to "downsizing." Our manager commented cheerfully, "This is fun. We should do this more often."
Not another word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that deer-in-the-headlights stare.
This was a bunch at Texas Instruments.

When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the drivers side door. His reply, "I know - I already got that side."
This was at the Ford dealership in Canton, Mississippi!

Well, listeners. There's our Raggedy with a picture of that guy who also sells pop corn. <smile>

I haven't had a chance to completely read through Bob's bio's as yet, but I was captivated by Elisabeth Von Trapp singing Frost's Acquainted With the Night:

Acquainted with the Night
by Robert Frost
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But did not call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

What a sweet voice she has, listeners.

Especially want to read the hawkman's They Walk Among us.
