Fantastic, Walter. Right folks?

Gerry and the Pacemakers. I think I played a song by those boys once.

Yes, Germany, ".....hearts torn in every way....", some figuratively; some literally, but I refused to elaborate on that right now.

Here's a song by Carlos Santana and dedicated to our Setanta because I remember thinking he was Spanish

Brown Skin Girl

She's a force of nature
That I can't outrun
A devil and a savior all in one
Her eyes can heal me
Or they can make me bleed
Her lips have me addicted to the poetry
Never really knowing just who I am
And I confess that I don't mind at all
Cause I would trade the world away
To stay inside this dream
I'll never find a better place to fall

[Chorus:]
I got a lover, a brown skin girl
She's got a magic of another world
And every time that I think of her, I'm on fire - fire
She knows a way, a spirtual flow
Of making me dizzy like vertigo
Her cinnamon kisses melt my soul like fire, yeah

I get a strong vibration
When she just says my name
And it drives me crazy
'Cause I don't know if she feels the same

But she likes to breathe some mystery in all she does
She laughs and says that I'm under her spell
Now I won't lie
I enjoy the ride
And pray it never ends
I feel her deeper than anything I've felt

[Chorus]

I can't help but crave another taste of her
Like a drowning man that's praying for the rain
And how she worked her way inside
I'll never understand
She's too beautiful to ever take the blame
But she'll always fan the flame

[Chorus]

Quote or misquote?

"keep your friends close but your enemies closer" posted by Brian from Shawnee on April 02, 2004

: : i think the person who orginally said "keep your friends close but your enimies closer" was Mobutu, a ruler of Zaire\the Congo who manipulated several politicians into giving him money and allowing him to stay in power

: I guess Mobutu lived near the cemetery, then...

: Anyway, I heard the "friends close... enemies closer..." line in a beer commercial a few years back. Radio, New York market, upscale/yuppy product, but I forget which beer it was. Might've been a beer alternative.

Some googling indicates that this quote appeared in the Godfather films, and was spoken by Al Pacino's character, which I believe was Michael Corleone. However, that's not where it originated. Many sources attribute the quote to Sun Tzu in The Art of War, but others dispute that. Some say it was taken from an interpretation of Macchiavelli's The Prince, but I could not find anyone who cited a page number or chapter in that book.

Apparently the phrase did not originate with Mobutu Sese Seko, the bloodthirsty dictator of Congo/Zaire.

Anyone here no the true origin?

Hey, Mr. Turtle. Would you use your current software to correct my spelling of "no"? Razz

I guess I'm a no it all person.

I think many of you here missed my link to Arthur's thread. Wish you would give it a try.

Thinking of my friend and colleague Juanita who died recently, and called me about my husband as she lay dying.(not Spanish that I know of)

Nita Juanita ask Thy soul if we should part, Nita Juanita lean Thou on my heart
Soft o'er the fountain ling'ring falls the southern moon
Far o'er the mountain breaks the day too soon
In Thy dark eyes' splendor where the warm light loves to dwell
Weary looks yet tender speak Thy fond farewell
(Nita Juanita let me linger by your side) Nita Juanita be my own fair bride
(Nita Juanita ask Thy soul if we should part) Nita Juanita lean Thou on my heart

Nita, Juanita, ask thy soul if we should part,
Nita, Juanita, lean thou on my heart.

Far o'er the mountain,
Breaks the day too soon.
In thy dark eyes' splendor,
Where the warm light loves to dwell.

Weary looks yet tender,
Speak they fond farewell.

Not at all, yitwail:

just set your graphics hardware acceleration back, press 'print' and copy the shot in any graphic program - even Window's own 'Paint' should work.

Good old Leonard was a wise man. Amazing that he was so popular in his time.
......................................
Everybody Knows
by Leonard Cohen

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

I went on a ferry 'cross the Mersey with a traveller from a foreign land once, and on the boat, they played the Gerry and the Pacemakers song.

"People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is, boy
As long as you don't support Manchester United
We'll never turn you away...."

Happy days.

STEVIE WONDER LYRICS

"Ngicuelela - Es Una Historia - I Am Singing"

[Ngiculela]
[Zulu translation by Thoko Mdalose Hall]

Ngiculela ikusasg
Ngliyacula nao thando
Ngicula ngelinyi langa
Uthando luyobusa
Jikelele kulomblada wethu

[Es Una Historia]
[Spanish translation by Raymond Maldonado]

Es una historia de manana
Es una historia de amor
Es una historia que amor reinera
Por nuestro mundo
Es una historia de mi corazon

[I Am Singing]

There's songs to make you smile
There's songs to make you sad
But with an happy song to sing
It never seems so bad
To me came this melody
So I've tried to put in words how I feel
Tomorrow will be for you and me

I am singing of topmorrow
I am singing of love
I am singing someday love will reign
Througout this world of ours
I am singing of love from my heart

Let's all sing someday sweet love will reign
Througout this world of ours
Let's start singing
Of love from our hearts
Let's start singing
Of love from our hearts

"Tootling"? Are you thinking of the Merseysippi Jazz Band? Smile

http://www.btinternet.com/~jazzworld/mersey.htm

And at Anfield they sing another GATP anthem

"When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet, tender voice of a lark...."

from Carousel, I believe.

'Night, all

Goodnight, Europe. We love you.

L.E. your wife is one lucky lady to have you, Brit. That was indeed a telling song. Salute, buddy.

A small personal anecdote:

Tonight when I drove to the family owned convenience store, I got caught up in a discussion that was unbelievable. The owner, who is a tall and appealing East Indian man, was having some small trouble with a customer involving a debit card. Another young woman, pretty as a rose, got involved, and boy was she vociferous. It was all about money and no money. I found myself smiling and just listening, because I didn't understand one idea that either one was expressing. I ended up with a stupid smile on my face and got the hell out, but I left with a sense of knowing and not knowing, and I think that sums up a lot of what is amiss in our world here.

Once more, I would like to play this song, because it is so true of most everyone on the planet:

(Jimmy Van Heusen, Johnny Burke)

Love is funny, or it's sad,
Or it's quiet, or it's mad.
It's a good thing, or it's bad,
But beautiful...

Beautiful to take a chance
And if you fall, you fall,
And I'm thinking,
I wouldn't mind at all.

Love is tearful, or it's gay,
It's a problem, or it's play.
It's a heartache either way,
But beautiful...

And I'm thinking, if you were mine,
I'd never let you go.
And that would be but beautiful,
I know.

~interlude~

And I'm thinking, if you were mine,
I'd never let you go.
And that would be but beautiful,
That would be but beautiful...
I know.

Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale of cotton
Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale a day
Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale of cotton
Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale a day

I saw 'skeeter on my head,
Blinked his eye and I killed him dead
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch o'turnip,
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch a day
Gotta weed a patch o' turnip
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch o'turnip
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch a day

I saw a gal in calico,
She tripped and fell, and she didn't say hello
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a mess o'greens,
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a pot a day
Gotta cook a mess o'greens
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a mess o'greens
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a pot a day

I got a pig who's nice and greasy,
All you ladies shake it easy
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail o' water,
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail a day
Gotta tote a pail a day
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail o' water
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail a day

I don't know but I've been told,
A gopher really don't live in a hole
Gotta jump down, spin around and sweat a pail o' water,
Gotta jump down, spin around and sweat a pail a day
Gotta sweat a pail a day
Gotta jump down, spin around and sweat a pail o' water
Gotta jump down, spin around and sweat a pail a day

some tunes from paul heaton, heaton started his career with the housemartins, after two brilliant albums, the band called it quits and heaton went on to form the beautiful south, he also has a side solo project called biscuit boy

so a song from each for your listening pleasure

Flag Day
The Housemartins

Too many florence nightingales
Not enough robin hoods
Too many halos not enough heroes
Coming up with the goods
So you though you'd like to change the world
Decided to stage a jumble sale
For the poor, for the poor

It's a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the queen
'cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
It's a waste of time if you know what they mean

Too many hands in too many pockets
Not enough hands on hearts
Too many ready to call it a day
Before the day starts

So you thought you'd like to see them healed
Got blue peter to stage an appeal
For the poor, for the poor

It's a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the queen
'cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
It's a waste of time if you know what they mean

Flag day, flag day, flag day

Have Fun
The Beautiful South

Have fun
And if you can't have fun
Have someone else's fun
'Cause someone sure had mine
They came in
now they're having a whale of a time

You should grow a beard
A beard to tell a thousand stories never told before
A beard to tell you tales, whilst the fireplace roars
The closing of relationships and the opening of doors
The starting of hostilities and the ending of wars

Take care
And if you couldn't care
Take someone else's care
'Cause someone took my care
They went there and then they were not there

We should have a baby
And then I wouldn't feel quite so sad
Then I'd feel like Paul the Saint and not Jack the Lad
A baby that'll make me feel so very glad
I've had a life of booze, but that's all I've ever had

'Cause I'm the King of Misery
The Prince of the torn apart
And you're the lighthouse keeper
To the owner of a ship-wrecked heart

Take heart
And if you can't take heart
Take someone else's heart
Someone took my heart
They came in, now I'm torn apart

We should grey together
Not that pigeon-chested Trafalgar grey
The grey that greets you on that first October day
The grey of Russian front, whilst wolves bay
And the skeleton of life that love decays

'Cause you're the Queen of Sadness
The Princess of the House of Pain
And you're the final match
To the holder of this flickering flame

Have fun

Barstool
Biscuit Boy

Whilst other couples look for love
in a love so obviously dead
Ours still takes us by surprise
like a barstool over the head

Whilst she cowers away in the cupbooard
and he cowers away in the shed
Ours still takes us from behind
like a barstool over the head

We could swap this helter-skelter ride
and take tranquility instead
But excitement and uncertainty
are the girl you actually wed

For so many love is a minefield
spent fearing where you tread
But ours just flies across the room
like a barstool aimed at head

We never valued personal injury
more hurtful words that were said
And it left us happily waiting
the next barstool over the head

And if your down on your luck
just duck
chances are it'll probably miss
and if it ever hits
and your head splits
it's a hell of a goodnight kiss

A hell of a goodnight kiss

And the day we feel like ordinary lovers
when we've grown to old for the stools
We can bring our bruised bodies together
and start loving like ordinary fools

And the day we feel like ordinary lovers
when we've grown to old for the stools
We can bring our bruised bodies together
and start loving like ordinary fools

Loving like ordinary fools

Good morning, WA2K radio fans and contributors.

edgar, thanks for the cotton song. Great, Texas.

dj, Honestly, you come up with such unusual melodies and lyrics. That was a hell of a goodnight kiss. <smile>. Thanks, Canada.

Here's a goodie:

Beach Boys - Cotton Fields (The Cotton Song) Lyrics
Huddie Ledbetter

When I was a little bitty baby
My mama done rock me in the cradle
In them old cotton fields back home
It was back in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
In them old cotton fields back home

Let me tell you now well got me in a fix
I caught a nail in my tire doing lickitey splits
I had to walk a long long way to town
Came upon a nice old man well he had a hat on
Wait a minute mister can you give me some directions
I gonna want to be right off for home

Don't care if them cotton balls get rotten
When I got you baby, who needs cotton
In them old cotton fields back home
Brother only one thing more that's gonna warm you
A summer's day out in California
It's gonna be those cotton fields back home

It was back in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
Give me them cotton fields
(It was back in Louisiana)
Let me hear it for the cotton fields
(Just about a mile from Texarkana)
You know that there's just no place like home

Well boy it sure feels good to breathe the air back home
You shoulda seen their faces when they seen how I grown
In them old cotton fields back home.

Confession, listeners. I have never seen one cotton ball except at the pharmacy.

Naomi Judd
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Naomi Judd (born Diana Ellen Judd on January 11, 1946 in Ashland, Kentucky) is an American country music singer.

Together with her daughter, Wynonna Judd, she formed the highly successful singing duo known as The Judds. Her second daughter, Ashley Judd, is a successful film actress.

Naomi first expressed this passion of communication as half of country music's most famous mother/daughter team, The Judds. There, she also first captured national attention during the duo's rise. Their popularity earned them 20 top 10 hits (including 15 #1s) and kept them undefeated for eight consecutive years at all three major country music awards shows. In addition, the duo won 5 Grammys and a vast array of other awards and honors. As a songwriter, Naomi also won a Grammy for "Country Song of the Year" with the Judds' smash hit "Love Can Build A Bridge."

In 1991, after selling over 20 million albums and videos in seven years and at the pinnacle of their career, The Judds' reign came to an abrupt end. Naomi was diagnosed with Hepatitis C, a potentially fatal chronic liver disease that forced her retirement. Their duet ended on a high note when their "Farewell" tour was the top grossing act and their farewell concert was the most successful musical event in cable pay-per view history.

Naomi has since stepped out of the spotlight to explore paths that have led to new endeavors. Today, she is completely cured of the Hepatitis C virus and uses the strength of her own experiences as spokesperson for the America Liver Foundation. In 1991, Naomi created the Naomi Judd Education and Research Fund, using her household name and personal time to raise awareness of the deadly Hepatitis C virus as well as research funds for the American Liver Foundation.

Naomi also expresses her energy on humanitarian activities, social issues and personal growth education. She has spoken at conventions, seminars and high profile summits as well as numerous media awareness campaigns and Capitol Hill hearings.

Love Can Build A Bridge
by Judds, The

I'd gladly walk across the desert
with no shoes upon my feet
To share with you the last bite
of bread I had to eat

I would swim out to save you
In your sea of broken dreams
When all your hopes are sinking
Let me show you what love means

Chorus:
Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine
Love can build a bridge
Don't you think it's time (2x)

I would whisper love so loudly
Every heart would understand
That love and only love
Can join the tribes of man

I would give my heart's desires
So that you might see
The first step is to realize
That it all begins with you and me

Chorus

When we stand together
It's our finest hour
We can do anything, anything
If we keep believing in the power

Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine
Love can build a bridge
Don't you think it's time
Don't you think it's time.
