Oh, that's Peter Finch, Letty. That excerpt is from the movie "Network" (1976) and at the time the phrase (I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore) was very popular . Finch played the 'mad prophet of the air-waves' in the movie. His character announced he would commit suicide while on the air, and I believe a similar incident occurred in real life. One of our listeners will probably have more info about that. Finch died a couple of months before being awarded the Oscar for 'Network'and remains the only actor to have won the award posthumously.

I was referring to Mateo Falcone's form of punishment for his own son, Francis. As to Prosper Merimee, I did a quick background check, but remember few of the details except that he was a dandy and extremely intelligent with a gentler side that his writings and letters did not often portray.

Now, Paris. What would you like to hear? <smile>

Of course, Raggedy. I recall that movie now. Thanks for scrubbing out my memory banks; however, I didn't know about the full situation, it seems.

AhHa! Now, methinks, I must make an apology to Francis. Indeed the child's name was Fortunato. Sorry for that slip, honey.

Isn't it odd that the man in The Cask of Amontillado whose fate was sealed, so to speak, had the same name?

and now for some good news on the home front, folks. It seems that our husker is home from the hospital, but still carries that staph infection in his blood. So for Husker, a get well song:

This song is called "nok kra-daad" from the album The Messages by Dan D2B.

pup ben nok bai uay porn hai ter hai
Fold it as a paper crane to wish that you get well.

jep kae nai ja baan tao jon hai dee
No matter how much you hurt, I'll ease it until you get well.

faak ben nok gra-daat bai hai chuay ruk saa
Send it as a paper crane to help healing you.

ter dtong dee keun maa yoo kiang kaang gun yaang derm
You have to get well, come back and stand beside us like you did.

(Interlude)

kao maa dai fung kao maa waa ter mai sa-bai
I heard the news that you weren't well.

huang ter jep buay baep nee chun took jai
I'm worried that you're hurting like thisÂ… and it hurts me.

chun yaak buay taen jep taen ter roo mai
I want to bear the pain for youÂ… do you know that.

chun nun huang yai ter leua gern
I care for you so much.

porn nai kwaam cheu baep nai chuay ter hai dee
What blessing, what belief that'll help you get well?

pleng nee pup pleng ben nok song hai ter
This song, I'll fold this song into a crane to send it to you.

haang lae beek maa duay sat taa kong chun
Tail and wing appear through my faith.

nok gra-daat nun chun hai ter
That paper crane, I give it to you.

pup ben nok bai uay porn hai ter hai
Fold it as a paper crane to wish that you get well.

jep kae nai ja baan tao jon hai dee
No matter how much you hurt, I'll ease it until you get well.

faak ben nok gra-daat bai hai chuay ruk saa
Send it as a paper crane to help healing you.

ter dtong dee keun maa yoo kiang kaang gun yaang derm
You have to get well, come back and stand beside us like you did.

(Interlude)

wung wai waa eek mai naan ter gor hai dee
I'm hoping that it won't be long before you get well.

pleng nee chun faak gup nok bai hai ter
I'm entrusting this song with the bird so that it can go give it to you.

kor nok gra-rian brot chuay ter kong chun
I'm pleading that the crane will help you.

hai mai gee wun gor kaeng raeng
To be strong within a matter of days

pup ben nok bai uay porn hai ter hai
Fold it as a paper crane to wish that you get well.

jep kae nai ja baan tao jon hai dee
No matter how much you hurt, I'll ease it until you get well.

faak ben nok gra-daat bai hai chuay ruk saa
Send it as a paper crane to help healing you.

ter dtong dee keun maa yoo kiang kaang gun yaang derm
You have to get well, come back and stand beside us like you did.

yoo kiang kaang chun yaang derm
Stand beside me like you did.

Interesting that a crane signifies healing in Thai.

I saw both nights of the Dylan special on PBS. It was incredible, especially in highlighting his refusal to be typecast, even when he was being called a traitor by those who wanted him to stay in the folk music mold. He always stayed true to himself, a cryptic, unique genius. He kept telling admirers and the media that he didn't protest, he wasn't political, he was, simply, "A song and dance man."

Bob Dylan__

Mama, take this badge off of me
I can't use it anymore.
It's gettin' dark, too dark for me to see
I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door.

Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

Mama, put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore.
That long black cloud is comin' down
I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door.

Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

Long About Now

Long about now
My woman's waking
Shaking the sleep from out of her eyes
Starting a smile so warm, that smile is making
The morning sun ashamed to rise

Long about now
My woman's bending
Tending the fire and setting the bread
Starting a song so sweet that at it's ending
That fire is burning extra red

Oh long about now
My woman's waiting
Shading the sun from off of her brow
Searching the winding road
With eyes that try to find me
And longing after me
Long about now

Sign on the window says "Lonely,"
Sign on the door said "No Company Allowed,"
Sign on the street says "Y' Don't Own Me,"
Sign on the porch says "Three's A Crowd,"
Sign on the porch says "Three's A Crowd."

Her and her boyfriend went to California,
Her and her boyfriend done changed their tune.
My best friend said, "Now didn' I warn ya,
Brighton girls are like the moon,
Brighton girls are like the moon."

Looks like a-nothing but rain . . .
Sure gonna be wet tonight on Main Street . . .
Hope that it don't sleet.

Build me a cabin in Utah,
Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout,
Have a bunch of kids who call me "Pa,"
That must be what it's all about,
That must be what it's all about.

Three angels up above the street,
Each one playing a horn,
Dressed in green robes with wings that stick out,
They've been there since Christmas morn.
The wildest cat from Montana passes by in a flash,
Then a lady in a bright orange dress,
One U-Haul trailer, a truck with no wheels,
The Tenth Avenue bus going west.
The dogs and pigeons fly up and they flutter around,
A man with a badge skips by,
Three fellas crawlin' on their way back to work,
Nobody stops to ask why.
The bakery truck stops outside of that fence
Where the angels stand high on their poles,
The driver peeks out, trying to find one face
In this concrete world full of souls.
The angels play on their horns all day,
The whole earth in progression seems to pass by.
But does anyone hear the music they play,
Does anyone even try?

FAR AWAY EYES
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
And the preacher said, "You know you always have the
Lord by your side"

And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you Jesus, thank you lord

I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there she'd be off
She'd be off with the nearest truck driver she could find
Much to my surprise, there she was sittin in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
Was a girl with far away eyes

So if you're down on your luck
And you can't harmonize
Find a girl with far away
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Well the preacher kept right on saying that all I had to do was send
Ten dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of Jesus
Located somewhere in Los Angeles, California
And next week they'd say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true
So I did, the next week, I got a prayer with a girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got

So if you're down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Well, I do believe that Dylan made a hit with most of our listeners and contributors.

Thanks, dys and Diane for the reminders.

Edgar, you surprised me with Mick. Neat song, however.

And for spendius:

Artist: Ray Charles Lyrics
Song: You Don't Know Me Lyrics

You give your hand to me
And then you say, "Hello."
And I can hardly speak,
My heart is beating so.
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well.
Well, you don't know me.
(no you don't know me)
No you don't know the one
Who dreams of you at night;
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
Oh I'm just a friend.
That's all I've ever been.
Cause you don't know me.
(no you don't know me)
For I never knew the art of making love,
Though my heart aches with love for you.
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by.
A chance that you might love me too.
(love me too)
You give your hand to me,
And then you say, "Goodbye."
I watched you walk away,
Beside the lucky guy
Oh, you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so.
Well, you don't know me
(For I never knew the art of making love, )
(Though my heart aches with love for you. )
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by.
A chance that you might love me too.
(love me too)
Oh, you give your hand to me,
And then you say, "Goodbye."
I watched you walk away,
Beside the lucky guy
Oh, you'll never ever know
The one who loved you so.
Well, you don't know me
(you don't love me, you don't know me)

this might suit spendius:

FLIBBERTY JIB by Ken Nordine

There was this stranger who came into our town, who was tall and he had a dark look about him, and a special brilliance was in his eyes. When he looked at us there was a feeling that he could see right down to the bottom. We may have been mistaken in this, but at the time no questions were asked. The questions always come later. All we cared about was the mystery we sensed in this stranger and we waited to see what would happen.

One evening that was different from any other, he got us all together in the big auditorium. He stood there on the huge stage. The only light was on him. And we waited in the dark.

Then out of his tallness came the chanting, first as a whisper we could hardly hear. "The flibberty jib bom the bippity bop; the flibberty jib bom the bippity bop..."

It didn't make any sense! We were caught up in something we didn't understand. He had trapped us without our knowing it. Possibly it was his manner. And we came alive to him as he slowly moved us with his chant through the Land of Hush, into Insistant Savage Throbbing Crescendos of Ecstacy!

As if it were the only thing we could do, we chanted with him, "THE FLIBBERTY JIB BOM THE BIPPITY BOP; THE FLIBBERTY JIB BOM THE BIPPITY BOP...", and he was up on the high stage laughing, with all his might shouting, "YES, YES, YES!"

But there were those among us who were jealous of his powers, who felt they should be in the centre of the stage with the light shining on them. They were against our hero, and the chanting, and are going to be with him every free moment...

And so, little by little, a little later, these critics set to work to make nonsense out of the sense of what we were doing...and they succeeded. They destroyed our hero's faith in himself. He didn't have it any more.

After a few disappointing times in the big auditorium, the light gone out of him, we all stopped going. And the man who had once seemed so tall, who now seemed so much smaller, left our town saying, "no...no...no."

We lived through the boredom of the time that followed telling each other pale stories of 'what once was' and 'what might have been if...' We lived on histories and hopes. We did this until the miracle we never thought would happen again happened.

Another stranger came into our town and he too was tall and dark and had eyes that could look right down to the bottom of you. And he got us all into the big auditorium, and with the light on him - we were in the dark - he chanted, "THE FLIBBERTY JIB BOM THE BIPPITY BOP; THE FLIBBERTY JIB BOM THE BIPPITY BOP..."

And we joined in and the magic was in us, and he was laughing and all his might was with him and he was shouting, "YES, YES, YES!"

BUT...there were those among us who were jealous and so forth, you know...You know what they did...

Little by little, a little later, they put us back on the narrow path.

This is the way things have been in our town for as long as anyone cares to remember. By the way...

...How are things in your town?

Fantastic, Yit. That's a really deep song. Never heard it, so we are very glad that you played it for us, turtle man.

I didn't watch the Dylan show, however. So I can't comment.

Folks, it's all over the news about how the Red Cross is holding back money that they obtained to help victims of Katrina and Rits, and if that isn't enough, listen to this:

FEMA to reimburse faith groups for helping victims Tue Sep 27, 5:40 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse churches and other religious organizations that have provided shelter, food and supplies to the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.

The payments with taxpayer money would mark the first time that the government has made such payments to faith-based groups at a time following natural disasters, the newspaper reported, citing FEMA officials.

FEMA is a division within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

According to the article, religious groups that operated emergency shelters, food distribution centers or medical facilities at the request of state and local governments in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama would be eligible.

Rita, packing winds of 120 miles per hour (193 kph), struck the Gulf Coast over the weekend. Katrina came ashore in Louisiana on August 29, killed more than 1,000 people and caused as much as an estimated $200 billion in economic losses.

Reimbursements would cover a "wide range of costs," FEMA spokesman Eugene Kinerney was quoted as saying.

Kinerney said they would include "labor costs incurred in excess of normal operations, rent for the facility and delivery of essential needs like food and water," the report said.

The policy was outlined in a September 9 internal memorandum, titled "Eligible Costs for Emergency Sheltering Declarations."

Under the policy, religious groups, like secular nonprofit groups, will be required to document their costs and file for reimbursement from state and local emergency management agencies, which in turn will seek funds from FEMA, the report said.

The report cited a FEMA official in Louisiana as saying it is too early to know how many groups will seek reimbursement under the new program.

You know, i know the sun will always shine

Go down to the river, babe
Honey i will meet you there
Go down to the river, babe
Honey i will pay your fare.

You know, i know the sun will always shine
But baby, please stop cryin' 'cause it's tearin' up my mind.

If you're lookin' for assistance babe, girl
Or if you just want some company

Well, folks, It looks as though it's that time of night for all of us.

Thinking of a dreamy song; the kind that makes one remember.

Take the ribbon from your hair
Shake it loose and let it fall
Layin' soft against your skin
Like the shadow on the wall

Come and lay down by my side
Till the early mornin' light
All I'm takin' is your time
Help me make it through the night

I don't care what's right or wrong
I won't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow
Lord, tonight I need a friend

Yesterday is dead and gone
And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone
Help me make it through the night

[ humming of a verse ]

Yesterday is dead and gone
And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone
Help me make it through the night

I don't want to be alone
Help me make it through the night.
