We had Four Strong Winds by Ian and Sylvia in our house, too.

I've never heard Lena Horne do Lost in the Stars, but I like almost everything she does, Edgar. I do have a Burl Ives recording of it, too.

Lena recorded Lost in the Stars in 1964. The album was partially suppressed by radio because of the controversial nature of the lead song, Now.

Now goes something like this:

If those historic gentlemen came back today
Jefferson Washington and Lincoln
I'm sure they'd say
Thanks for quoting us so much
But we don't want to take a bow
Put those words into action
And we mean action
Now
Now is the moment
Now is the moment
Come on
We've put it off long enough
I went and took a look
In my old history book
It's there in black and white for all to see
Now now now now
Everyone should love his brother
People all should love each other
Since they say we all got rythm
Come on let's share our rythm with 'em now
Just don't take it literal mister
No on wants to grab your sister
Call me naive
Still I believe
We're created free and equal
Now now now now

I'm sure there's more and it goes slightly different than that, but you can see why they got upset.

Raggedy, loved the Cry the Beloved Country song.

Just got through watching Shaun of the Dead, and now I must run take it back.

The same thing happened in radio with the song Love for Sale. The manager of the station said, DON'T PLAY IT!

Weather report:

Walter has announced that things are really stirred up in the UK.

Later, folks

McTag. I remember Guy Mitchell only from his song about "One of the Rovin' Kind." For goodness sake, locate that song for us.

Despite extensive and protracted clicking on my old and creaky computer, I could not locate a set of lyrics. However a short extract of the song can be played from

I love that song Someday Soon. Some local musicians played it in their act, many moons ago I heard them, and I bought their album on the strength of it. The girl sang it really well. Glad to have learned of the original artists, thank you Dys, and other contributors.

Edgar: I'm impressed by "Now". I just checked and it looks like it's no longer available. Do you remember the TV special with Lena Horne and Harry Belafonte. I have the record somewhere. They did a song about the Ghetto, not the one Elvis did, that I really liked, but right now I can't get it together in my mind. And a great rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". What a show!. I have to get those records off the top shelves.

Letty: Glad you liked Cry the Beloved Country. I think you'd also like Bird of Passage and The Hills of Ixipo from that score, but the lyrics aren't on the net and I have a problem with deciphering some of the African words when listening to the CD.

Movie review:

Shaun of the Dead was fantastic. A little slow getting started, but as it built, the humor and the arabesque mixed well. I would recommend it.

McTag, thanks for that link. It's a little slow for me but I'm certain others can access it just fine. I'll try later.

The following song was banned at the radio station where I worked in Virginia:

Love for sale
Advertising young love for sale
Love that's fresh and still unspoiled
Love that's only slightly soiled
Love for sale

Love for sale
Lots and lots of young love for sale
Now if I you'd like to try my way
Follow me and climb the stairs
Love for sale

Like the poet's type of love in their childish way
I know every kind of love better far than they
If you want to trail of love
I've been through the mill of love
Old love, new love, every love but true love

Love for sale
Advertising young love for sale
Love that's fresh and still unspoiled
Love that's only slightly soiled
Love for sale

Who would buy?
Who would like to sample my surprise?

Love for sale

... (longer instrumental part)

Love for sale
Advertising young love for sale

Love for sale
Advertising crazy love for sale
Now if I you'd like to try my way
Follow me and climb the stairs
Love for sale

Love for sale (Sweet Love)
Love for sale (Lots and lots of young love)
Love for sale

I knew about that tv show but missed it. I have Now on vinyl. Actually "Here's Lena - Now." It has lots of good stuff:
Wouldn't it Be Loverly
Now
Blowin in the Wind
Distant Melody
Meantime
Best Things in Life Are Free
Silent Spring
Great Day
Once in a Lifetime
The Eagle and Me
Tomorrow Mountain
Lost in the Stars

In my opinion her best overall album.

You know, listeners. I find the strangest stuff on the web when I am looking for other things. I was searching out Jimmie Rogers of Honeycomb fame, the one who was mysteriously found dead, perhaps the victim of police brutality. Then I came across this Jimmy:

http://www.jimmierodgers.com/home.html

T-for Texas,
T for Tennessee,
T for Texas,
T for Tennessee.
T for Thelma,
The gal who made a fool outta me.

Don't ask. Cause I don't know how I remembered that.

McTag, that link didn't work for me. grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Lena Horne. What a darlin' woman. At this point, all I can remember is Cabin in the Sky, and the beautiful song that came from it, "Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe."

It seems that happiness is just a thing called Jo,
He's got a smile that makes the lilacs wanna grow.
He's got a little bit of (something..something)
When they know little Joe's not around.

Sometimes the cabin's gloomy and the table's bare,
And then he'll kiss me and it's Christmas everywhere.
Troubles fly away and life is easy go.
Does he love me good,
That's all I want to know.

It seems that happiness is just a thing called Joe.

Damn. Sometimes I just love me. Razz

My Mom intended to name my oldest brother Jimmy Rodgers, after the old blue yodler. Her sister-in-law delivered first and stole the name.
I have a collectuion of his recordings, including Pistol Packing Papa, which I was informed was my Dad's favorite song.

Great selections on "Now", Edgar. I'm not familiar with Silent Spring. I believe The Eagle and Me was from the B-Way musical, Bloomer Girl. I had a record of it with Bing Crosby at one time.

I just googled and the TV show was "Harry and Lena, For the Love of Life", recorded in 1970. It's not available on CD. Wonder why. I remember another of the songs Harry performed was Joe South's "Walk A Mile in My Shoes". I think he did "Mr. Bojangles", too. It appears from the article that I found on the net that Harry and Lena only did four duets together. I remember how much my mother enjoyed that show. Me, too. I bought the album for her and she played it all the time, - there was a song that spoke of the subway and city streets - can't get it together. I think the reason I've forgotten most of the songs, is because my Mom passed away one year later and I pushed those songs out of my mind. I'm going to look for that vinyl next week. I know I still have it somewhere on my book shelves.

Leaves studio singing:

Drinkin beer in a cabaret,
and was I havin' fun.
Till one night she caught me right,
And now I'm on the run.

Lay that pistol down, babe.
Lay that pistol down.

Pistol packin' mama,
Lay that pistol down.

drifts off into the arms of morpheus.

Oh my goodness. I just saw Letty's post about Jimmy Rogers. I've been trying to remember his closing song for his TV program ever since Dys posted the Dylan song. I remember his face was disfigured as the result of an auto accident. I also remember him in the movie The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, which at one time was a children's classic. I also remember the other Jimmy Rogers. (lol)

I transcribed Silent Spring from the record for you. Sorry I can't sing it.

Not a leaf is heard to murmer
Not a bird is heard to call
And bewildered I stand
The fearful skies
Ask me why
This strange and silent spring
Children hide and roses tremble
Doors are dark and the shades are down
And the rains of hate
Cross the garden gate
As the ghost of spring stalks the town
Is this the land where flags are flown
To bring this hopeful world
A dream of spring unknown
Is this the dream
Is this the spring
The silent spring
That silent men have wished and sung

Silent men
Take heart
Take wing
And sing away this silent spring

Ten things you should know about sex. Sent by a physician - really.
******************************************
1. Sex is a beauty treatment. Scientific tests find
that when women make love they produce amounts of
the hormone estrogen, which makes hair shine and
skin smooth.

2. Gentle, relaxed lovemaking reduces your chances
of suffering dermatitis, skin rashes and blemishes.
The sweat produced cleanses the pores and makes your
skin glow.

3. Lovemaking can burn up those calories you piled
on during that romantic dinner.

4. Sex is one of the safest sports you can take up.
It stretches and tones up just about every muscle in
the body. It's more enjoyable than swimming 20 laps,
and you don't need special sneakers!

5. Sex is an instant cure for mild depression. It
releases endorphins into the bloodstream, producing
a sense of euphoria and leaving you with a feeling
of well-being.

6. The more sex you have, the more you will be
offered. The sexually active body gives off greater
quantities of chemicals called pheromones. These
subtle sex perfumes drive the opposite sex crazy!

7. Sex is the safest tranquilizer in the world. IT
IS 10 TIMES MORE EFFECTIVE THAN VALIUM.

8. Kissing each day will keep the dentist away
Kissing encourages saliva to wash food from the
teeth and lowers the level of the acid that causes
decay, preventing plaque build-up.

9. Sex actually relieves headaches. A lovemaking
session can release the tension that restricts blood
vessels in the brain.

10. A lot of lovemaking can unblock a stuffy nose.
Sex is a natural antihistamine. It can help combat
asthma and hay fever.

Good morning, all. What a marvelous way to begin the day, here on WA2K. Thank you C.I. for that medical reminder.

McTag, a wise question. I don't believe an over-the-counter pill would work very well. Smile

Listeners, keep your calls coming, and perhaps C.I. can add more to his list of things to do.

Here's a question from a listener in Peoria Illinois:

Mr Harold Perry writes:

Dear staff,

A long while ago you discussed the origin of the phrase "Be Still My Beating Heart" Unfortunately I missed your conclusion. Could you give me some history on it?
