Francis, Thanks for that bio of Antonio Fargas. I have seen that man, and recall some of his roles, but The Starksy and Hutch series evades me somewhat. One of the pair did himself in, right?

Rex, thanks for playing "Ship of Fools". I do believe that Katherine Ann Porter wrote a novel by that name, but I'm probably wrong because I'm relying on my memory.

Last night, I briefly watched The Spy Game with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. and did not understand much of it. I assumed the ending was good because both Redford and Pitt escaped. Duh!

The reason that I bring up that movie, folks, is because I got two other movies confused. One was with Kevin Costner called No Way Out, and the other was Against All Odds. The former was a spy thriller, and the latter, a strange love story. What is most provocative is the theme song by Phil Collins:

Against All Odds

Featured on the soundtrack of against all odds ,1984

How can I just let you walk away, just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all

How can you just walk away from me,
When all I can do is watch you leave
Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now, oh there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me,
Just the memory of your face
Ooh take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against all odds and that's what I've got to face

I wish I could just make you turn around,
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you,
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me, just the memory of your face
Now take a look at me now, cos there's just an empty space

But to wait for you, is all I can do and that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now, cos I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It's the chance I've gotta take

Take a look at me now

Walter and Rex. Of course that song is by Bob Dylan. We all know edgar's penchant for Mr. Zimmerman. <smile>

Thanks, Texas.

Very nice Letty...

"Against all Odds" a beautiful love song nicely penned...

It reminded me of the movie "White Nights". I guess I have my wires crossed.

Does anyone remember the name of the theme song in White Nights?

yitwail, reporting for duty ma'am. i found this interesting snippet about Gary Larson in Wikipedia:

In 1985, Gary Larson received the prestigious accolade of having a newly-discovered species named after him. The Strigiphilus garylarsoni is a biting louse of a genus only found on owls. Larson was far from offended, and has since said: "Actually, I considered this an extreme honor. Besides, I knew no one was going to write and ask to name a new species of swan after me. You have to grab these opportunities when they come along."

One of Larson's more famous cartoons shows two chimpanzees grooming. One finds a human hair on the other and inquires about "doing a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?" The Jane Goodall Institute thought this was in bad taste, and had their lawyers draft a letter to Larson and his distribution syndicate, in which they described the cartoon as an "atrocity". They were stymied, however, by Goodall herself, who revealed that she found the cartoon amusing. Since then, all profits from sales of a shirt featuring this cartoon go to the Goodall Institute.

unfortunately, Gary Larson doesn't allow his toons to be posted on the internet, so instead, here's a link to a webpage that has the Goodall cartoon.

THREE HORSES
(Words and Music by Joan Baez)

In the early dawn a stallion white
prances the hills in the morning light.
His bridle is painted with thunder and gold,
orchids and dragons, pale knights of old.
He is the horse of the ages past.
And now the children run to see
the stallion on the hill,
bringing bags of apples
and of clover they have filled.
And the white horse tells his stories
of the days now past and gone
and the children stand a-wondering
believing every song.
How brightly glows the past.

When the sun is high comes a mare so red,
trampling the graves of the living and dead.
Her mantle is heavy with mirrors and glass,
all is reflected when the red mare does pass.
She is the horse of the here and now.
And now there is confusion
amongst the children on the hill.
They cling to one another
and no longer can be still.
While the red mare's voice is trembling
with a rare and mighty call,
the children start remembering
the bearers and the pall.
And though their many-colored sweaters
are reflected in the glass,
and though the sun shines down upon them,
they are frightened in the grass.
How stark is the here and now.

When night does fall comes a stallion black,
so proud and tall he never looks back.
He wears him no emeralds, silver and gold,
not even a covering to keep him from cold.
He is the horse of the years to come.
And I will get me down
before this steed upon my knees
and sing to him the sorrows
of a thousand centuries.
And the children now will scatter
as their mothers call them home,
for the sadness of the evening horse
no child has ever known.
And I will hang about him
a bell that's never rung
and thank him for the many words
which from his throat have never sprung.
And I'll thank God and all the angels
that the stallion of the evening,
the black horse of the future,
comes to earth but has no tongue.

oops, before I look at the rest of the contributions, folks, I wanted to acknowledge Bob's coming winter observations. They reminded me so much of the legendary Paul Bunyan:

The Year of The Two Winters

The year of the two winters the snow was so deep Paul had to dig down to the trees to continue logging operations. It got so cold that the boiling coffee froze in the shanties and the 'jacks were scalded by the hot ice. When the men spoke, their words froze in mid-air and when it thawed in the spring there was a terrible chatter for weeks.

And a brief observation for Sunday:

I Shall Not Be Afraid
I shall not be afraid any more,
Either by night or day;
What would it profit me to be afraid
With you away ?

Now I am brave. In the dark night alone,
All through the house I go,
Locking the doors and making windows fast
When sharp winds blow.

For there is only sorrow in my heart,
There is no room for fear.
But how I wish I were afraid again,
My dear, my dear !

Hey, Yit. Welcome back, and I loved your bit about Gary Larson:

In 1985, Gary Larson received the prestigious accolade of having a newly-discovered species named after him. The Strigiphilus garylarsoni is a biting louse of a genus only found on owls. Larson was far from offended, and has since said: "Actually, I considered this an extreme honor. Besides, I knew no one was going to write and ask to name a new species of swan after me. You have to grab these opportunities when they come along." Laughing

Rex, That was a haunting song by Joan Baez. It reminds me somewhat of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. WOW!

edgar, Who did fifteen? Sweet song, Texas.

Well, folks. It's time for a station break:

This is cyberspace, WA2K radio.

Rex:
You must have Baez's CD of Bob Dylan songs. I love that CD. But, of course, I love anything Baez sings.

Letty:
I think the Martin Silas Marner movie was "A Simple Twist of Fate".

That's the one, Raggedy. Thanks, youngun.

It seems that I also made another error, listeners. I thought that Francis was referring to the TV series of Starsky and Hutch. I still can't find the man who played Soul's partner and later killed himself. Grrrrrrrrr.

Francis, play the song for us. Maybe I'll get something right today. <smile>

As matter of fact I was asking if somebody has this song as I can't find my vinyl of Joan Baez.

I believe Jackson Browne sings it in English.

<David Soul's partner was Paul Michael Glaser>

Francis: I'm thinking "My Personal Revenge" is in an album of Spanish Songs by Baez - an album I haven't been able to obtain. Saw it once in a record store years ago, didn't buy it, and have been looking for it ever since.

I'm positive I don't have that song in my vinyls and I'm not positive it's on her Spanish album. Just a guess. As I have most of her recordings with the exception of that album.

I've been looking for a CD of a life performance Baez (I think it was at Big Sur) did during which she sang "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Hello In There" with Kris Kristoffersen. I have the vinyl recording of it stashed away on my top shelf somewhere.

Well, folks, while Raggedy and Francis search through the archives for that Biaz song, let's do one that Letty happens to like:

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
(J.R.Robertson - © 1970 Canaan Music, Inc.)

Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train,
'Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again.
In the winter of '65, We were hungry, just barely alive.
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember, oh so well,

(Choeurs)

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and the bells were ringing,
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and the people were singin'. They went
La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La,

Back with my wife in Tennessee, When one day she called to me,
"Virgil, quick, come see, there goes Robert E. Lee!"
Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good.
Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest,
But they should never have taken the very best.

(Choeurs)

Like my father before me, I will work the land,
Like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand.
He was just eighteen, proud and brave, But a Yankee laid him in his grave,
I swear by the mud below my feet,
You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat.

(Choeurs et conclusion)

And here is what I found in the archives about Joan:

Where Do The Children Play?
Cat Stevens

Well I think it's fine, building jumbo planes.
Or taking a ride on a cosmic train.
Switch on summer from a slot machine.
Yes, get what you want to if you want, 'cause you can get anything.

I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

Well you roll on roads over fresh green grass.
For your lorry loads pumping petrol gas.
And you make them long, and you make them tough.
But they just go on and on, and it seems that you can't get off.

Oh, I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

Well you've cracked the sky, scrapers fill the air.
But will you keep on building higher
'til there's no more room up there?
Will you make us laugh, will you make us cry?
Will you tell us when to live, will you tell us when to die?

I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?
