Ah, yes, edgar. A beautiful song to end the evening.

Some like a night at the movies
Some like a dance or a show
Some are content with an evening spent
Home by the radio

Some like to live for the moment
Some like to just reminisce
But whenever I have an evening to spend
Just give me one like this

This is a lovely way to spend an evening
Can't think of anything I'd rather do
This is a lovely way to spend an evening
Can't think of anyone as lovely as you

BRIDGE
A casual stroll through a garden
A kiss by a lazy lagoon
Catching a breath of moonlight
Humming our favorite tune

This is a lovely way to spend an evening
I want to save all my nights and spend them with you

Catching a breath of moonlight
Humming our favorite tune

This is a lovely way to spend an evening
I want to save all my nights and spend them with you

goodnight, dear friends, and to Europe:

Why does it get so late so early.

From Letty with love.

The monsoon has finally arrived. 7 p.m. Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in Albuquerque. And I watered the back yard this morning.

I was beginning to worry about the hurricane, but, it seems Mexico and perhaps Brownsville will pay the price this time. The forecasters say Houston ought to be spared.

Martha Reeves
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Martha Rose Reeves (born July 18, 1941), was the lead singer of the American Motown Records group Martha & the Vandellas. She was born in Eufaula, Alabama to Elijah Joshua & Ruby Lee Gilmore Reeves. The Reeves family moved to Detroit right after Martha's birth. Martha was brought up in church, for her grandfather Elijah Reeves was a minister at Detroit's Metropolitan Church. Generally considered Motown's most authentic female soul singer, Reeves is best-known for uptempo soul classics such as "Heat Wave," "Dancing in the Street," and "Jimmy Mack," but is arguably best at ballads such as "My Baby Loves Me" (backed by the Four Tops) and "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Thing" (normally a show-stopper in her live performances). She is a Grammy nominee and has been inducted to the Soul, Rhythm n' Blues, Rock n' Hall, and Alabama Music halls of fame. She was also honored by the Black Women in Publishing organization for her journalistic efforts (an early contributor to Soul newspaper) and her 1995 autobiography.

It was while listening to Reeves' first hit single, "Come and Get These Memories" that Motown founder Berry Gordy coined his "Sound of Young America" slogan. Her "Nowhere to Run" was named one of the top ten R&B singles of all time. She backed Marvin Gaye on tour and on his first three hits, "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," "Pride and Joy" and "Hitch Hike." She was the first Motown artist to record a Stevie Wonder composition, "Nobody Cares" on her Dance Party album in 1965. Wonder's frequent writing companion Sylvia Moy picked up on Reeves' Southern roots for her 1967 hit, "Honey Chile." A fearless performer respected by her fellow musicians for her versatility, Reeves' stage show during her Motown heydays included songs as diverse as Wilson Pickett's "I Found a Love," to the French art song, "Les Bicyclettes," and from Frank Sinatra's classic "All the Way" to the gospel "Oh Happy Day." Her singing partners have been as diverse as Dusty Springfield, Beverly Sills, James Brown, Ringo Starr, John Mellencamp, and Bruce Springsteen.

Reeves left Motown in the early 1970s, and later released albums on MCA (where her star-studded 1974 solo debut was the most expensive album recorded to that date), Arista, and Fantasy. In the early 1990s, she and other Motown veterans recorded updated versions of their hits and new material for London-based MotorCity Records.

The 1990s saw Reeves out of the studio, but making numerous television appearances, and constantly on the road, appearing as a solo artist, with original Vandellas Annette Beard Sterling Helton, and Rosalind Ashford Holmes. She toured the UK in a special Motown review called Dancing in the Street, and the US in a production of Ain't Misbehavin'. Today, she is usually backed by her sisters Lois (who debuted as a Vandella in 1967, on "Honey Chile" and later sang with Al Green's backup group, Quiet Elegance) and Delphine, who has been with the group since the early 1990s.

Reeves is an accomplished pianist, producer and songwriter. Her latest CD is Home to You (True Life Entertainment, 2004), which she produced and wrote all cuts except an updated "Jimmy Mack" and the Billie Holiday classic, "God Bless the Child."

Martha Reeves, still a resident of Detroit, Michigan, is currently running for city council.

NOWHERE TO RUN*

smoke screen thinly veils your features
up close you look so far a way
your face never shows expression
your life is nothing but a game

funny how I can't recall just exactly what was said
with my back against the wall and all that guilt upon your head

you love no one else but yourself
you think of no one else but you
you laugh and walk all over people
you got nothin' better to do

you betrayed your family double crossed your only friend
have you no trust or loyalty when will such sadness ever end

no truth ever spilled from your lips
just lies is all your tongue can twist
so quick to offer your opinion
advice dribbles down your chin

when you talk it's like a tomb your words carry no respect
when you walk into the room I feel a chill run down neck

Biography of Red Skelton (July 18, 1913 - September 17, 1997)
"If some day you're not feeling well, you should remember some little thing I have said or done and if it brings a smile to your face or a chuckle to your heart then my purpose as a clown has been fulfilled." -- Red Skelton

Red Skelton, America's greatest clown (in my humble opinion) has passed away. The great comedian has, thankfully, left a large body of work behind in the form of The Red Skelton Television show, movies, songs, radio shows, records, books, paintings, etc. At the bottom of this page you will find many Red Skelton resources -- if you know of any more, please sign the guest book or email me
Biography of Red Skelton

Red Skelton was inducted into the Clown Hall of Fame in 1989.

Richard "Red" Bernard Skelton was born in Vincennes, Indiana. His father, Joe, who died two months before his birth, was a former clown with the Hagenbeck & Wallace Circus. Before Red Skelton had turned sixteen, he had also clowned in this same show, and acted, sang, or did stand up comedy in medicine shows, minstrel shows, and on board a river showboat. Years later, Red Skelton wrote the poem "The Circus" in honor of his father.

A self-portrait sketch of Red Skelton, America's TV clownHis mother, left with four boys to raise on her own, worked as a cleaning woman and an elevator operator. She taught her son Red (nicknamed for his bright red hair) to appreciate art and gave him tickets to vaudeville shows. As Red Skelton later said, "Mom used to say I didn't run away from home. My destiny just caught up with me at an early age." The person most responsible for Red Skelton's involvement in the theater, however, was the famous actor, Ed Wynn. Wynn came to Vincennes in 1923 to put on a show, and spotted the 10-year-old Red Skelton selling newspapers on the street, to help support his family. Ed Wynn went up to him, bought all his newspapers and invited him to the show. He took Red backstage where he introduced the slack-jawed Red Skelton to everyone and let him look through the peephole at the audience filing in. Red fell in love with show business at that moment, which changed his life forever.

At the age of 15, Red Skelton left home to perform with a traveling medicine show, and went on to perform in showboats, minstrel shows, vaudeville, burlesque, and circuses -- including the Hagenbeck & Wallace Circus where his father had performed. In 1930, Red met his first wife, Edna Marie Stillwell, while performing in Kansas City. They married a year later, and she became his partner in vaudeville, as well as manager and writer. Even though they divorced 13 years later, Edna remained his chief writer -- Red Skelton stated that Edna was responsible for much of his success, having "brought me up from $50 a week to $7,500 a week."

Red Skelton portrayed as his hobo clown character, Freddy the Freeloader- from his induction into the Clown Hall of FameAfter years of preparation in vaudeville, burlesque, dance marathons and virtually every other venue available, Red Skelton made his debut on both radio and Broadway in 1937. The next year, he made his movie debut, "Having A Wonderful Time." Red Skelton went on to make over 40 movies for MGM during the 1940s and 1950s. In 1945, he married again, to Georgia Davis. This marriage lasted for 28 years, and resulted in the births of his son Richie and his daughter Valentina. Richie, unfortunately, died of leukemia in childhood, a blow that devastated the family.

Red Skelton's radio show, named naturally enough "The Red Skelton Show," ran from 1941 to 1953. On it, he used his own unique brand of comedy, as well as performing comedy skits involving some of his most popular clown characters, including Clem Kadiddlehopper, the slow-witted country bumpkin, Willy Lump Lump, a drunken sot, Cauliflower McPugg, a punch-drunk boxer, The Mean Widdle Kid, who's most famous expression, "I Dood It," became a national slogan, San Fernando Red, a likable rogue and con man, and his famous cross-eyed seagulls, Gertrude and Heathcliffe. His most famous character, the tramp clown Freddy the Freeloader, awaited the advent of his television show in 1951.

Red Skelton's television show finished fourth in the ratings in its' first year, and became even more popular over time. In 1953, it won the Emmy Award for Best Comedy Show. It later moved from NBC to CBS, and won another Emmy Award in 1961 for Outstanding Writing Achievement. At the end of each episode of his television show, Red would sign off with "Good night and God bless." In 1970, CBS cancelled the show, due to rising production costs and a desire to appeal to a higher class of advertisers. Red Skelton was deeply wounded by the cancellation, and never truly overcame the hurt. In 1986, when he accepted the Governor's Award of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at the Emmy Awards Show, after receiving a standing ovation, Red told the audience, "I want to thank you for sitting down, I thought you were pulling a CBS and walking out on me."

The Red Skelton Show returned to NBC in 1970, but was unable to regain its' former success, and was cancelled in 1971. This ended the second-longest run in television history for a television series. After the end of his television series, Red Skelton returned to performing for live audiences, now at clubs, resorts and casinos. In the early 1980s, he performed at Carnegie Hall, and several of his live performances are now available as part of the "Funny Faces" video series. In addition, Red had nurtured a lifelong interest in painting, with individual paintings fetching in excess of $80,000 -- he estimated that he earned over $2 million per year from his lithographs of clowns.

He was also a very generous man, and established the Red Skelton Foundation in Vincennes, Indiana, which cares for needy children. Read a story of Red Skelton's concern for a sick child for a story about Red, his son Richard who died of leukemia as a child, and how Red reached out to help another child.

As part of Red Skelton's Funny Faces video, Red Skelton had this to say about Freddy the Freeloader:

"I get asked all the time; Where did you get the idea for Freddie the Freeloader, and who is Freddie really?

Well, I guess you might say that Freddie the Freeloader is a little bit of you, and a little bit of me, a little bit of all of us, you know.

He's found out what love means. He knows the value of time. He knows that time is a glutton. We say we don't have time to do this or do that. There's plenty of time. The trick is to apply it. The greatest disease in the world today is procrastination.

And Freddie knows about all these things. And so do you.

He doesn't ask anybody to provide for him, because it would be taken away from you. He doesn't ask for equal rights if it's going to give up some of yours.

And he knows one thing ... that patriotism is more powerful than guns.

He's nice to everybody because he was taught that man is made in God's image. He's never met God in person and the next fella just might be him.

I would say that Freddie is a little bit of all of us."

Red Skelton died of pneumonia on September 17, 1997 at his home in Rancho Mirage,

News that pisses us off:

Governors: Drivers License Costs to Soar By ROBERT TANNER, AP National Writer
Mon Jul 18, 2:34 AM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa - In the name of homeland security, motorists are going to see costs skyrocket for driver's licenses and motor vehicle offices forced to operate like local branches of the FBI, the nation's governors warn.

The new federal law squeezed this spring into an $82 billion spending bill had Republican and Democrat governors fuming at their summer meeting here, and vowing to bring their complaints to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff at a Monday meeting.

"It's outrageous to pass this off on the states," said Republican Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, incoming chairman of the National Governors Association. "You're essentially asking the front-line clerks at the DMV to become an INS agent and a law enforcement agent."

The law that passed in June goes beyond an earlier law that sought to standardize state driver's licenses, requiring that states verify license applicants are American citizens or legal residents.

"This is going to drive the cost of driver's licenses for ordinary folks through the roof," said Democrat Tom Vilsack of Iowa. "I think it's going to drive people crazy."

The law would demand skills of motor vehicle office clerks far beyond what is currently expected, governors said.

Democrat Bill Richardson of New Mexico said the law, known as the REAL ID Act, unconstitutionally infringed upon state laws such as his, where illegal immigrants have been able to get licenses.

New Mexico's approach made roads safer since licensed immigrants could get insured, helped the state keep track of immigrants, and also helped integrate immigrants into the community, he said.

"It's a shortsighted, ill-conceived initiative," Richardson said. "We'll challenge it constitutionally."

Well, Raggedy, we'll settle on I'm Always Chasing Rainbows. <smile>

Thanks for the celeb updates, youngun. Let's see now listeners, I do believe we need to address that screamin' man:

Song lyrics
I put a spell on you.
Because you're mine.
Ah, you'd better stop the things that you do.
I ain't lying, no I ain't lying.
I just can't stand it babe.
The way you're always running 'round.
I just can't stand it.
The way you always put me down.
Yeah, I put a spell on you.
Because you're mine.
You're mine, you're mine.

I put a spell on you.
Because you're mine.

You'd better stop the things that you do.
Lord knows, I ain't lying.
No, no, no, I ain't lying.
I just can't stand it.
The way you always put me down.
I just can't stand it.
The way you're always running 'round.

I put a spell on you, ha ha.
Because you're mine.
You're mine, you're mine.

Ain't lying...

I love you, I love you.
Oh anyhow.
I don't care if you don't want me.
I'm yours anyhow.
I put a spell on you.
Because you're mine.

Because you're mine, you're mine.
Because you're mine.

Wow! Can you believe that Nelson Mandella is still with us? What a man!

Good morning aggie. I had to give them a two for one special when I saw Red Skelton listed. He was one of my all time favorites. A smile was automatic when he appeared on out little screens. He had such a gentle humor you couldn't help feeling better about everything around you. I swear if you listen hard enough you could hear a guffaw or two slipping out of Heaven.

Speaking of a smile, listeners:

quiz question for the day!

What cereal "sticks to your ribs"?

Here's a hint in a brief song-----

Here are the lyrics:

(sung to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")

I'm a little___ green and stout,
Open up my cage and let me out.
Better pick me up or else I'll squawk,
Rub my tummy and then I'll talk.

And the answer, my friends, is not a parrot!

Ah, yitwail, you're a real buddy. Hilarious picture of the screamin' Jay. I've heard the song, but never knew what the guy looked like. I read somewhere that he wrote it to his ex girl friend.

Good guesses, Yit and Francis. I wouldn't have had a clue, folks.

Boo, everyone gets at least fifteen minutes of fame.

Hmmmm. I'll have to check that person out, I guess.

We miss you on the radio, man. Get that machine of yours fixed and come back soon.

Just a personal anecdote. It must be more than 90 degrees here, and I truly owe my soul to the Food Lion store. Lost my husband ; stuff was melting; air conditioner on the blitz and the district manager came to my rescue.

For the manager:

Rescue me
Oh take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charms
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too

Come on and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
'Coz I need you, by my side
Can't you see that I'm lonely
Rescue me

Come on and take my heart
Take your love and conquer every part
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too

Come on and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
Come on baby and rescue me
'Coz I need you by my side
Can't you see that I'm lonely

Rescue me
Oh take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charms
'Coz I'm lonely and I'm blue
I need you and your love too
Come on and rescue me
Come on baby, take me baby, hold me baby, love me baby
Can't you see that I need you baby
Can't you see that I'm lonely
Rescue me

Come on and take my hand
Come on baby and be my man
Cuz I love you cuz I want you
Can't you see that I'm lonely?
take me baby
love me baby
need me baby
Can't you see that I'm lonely?

rescue me, rescue me.......

Well, yawl understand what I mean. <smile>
