Orchestre Rouge was a cold wave band in Rennes, France, when I was studying there. Their signer was from America, he's still around singing solo (Theo Akola). They made 2 LPs only but were brilliant. This song is in English:

Orchestre Rouge - Chief Joseph

Welcome back Izz with a y. Loved Chief Josep and Time of Clash.

As edgar knows, I love Phil Ochs. Didn't know that one by him.

Been having some problems here, so if I missed a contribution, I'll blame it on my youth. Razz

Olivier5, We always love what you play here. Thanks again for restoring our signal.

I made a mistake with my dedication to my friend Roger, so we'll attempt again.

The singer of that great band Orchestre Rouge staid around in France and became a (rather confidential) solo singer. He does very punchy stuff, not your usual FM fare... Here is a sample.

I've bolded the part when he speaks of his native US... :-) No offence I hope.

THEO HAKOLA - IL N'Y A PAS DE JOLIE FILLE À DROITE --- THERE IS NO PRETTY GIRL RIGHT OF THE AISLE

Margaret Thatcher est si affreuse --- Margaret Thatcher is so awful
That she needs a stapler for her make-up
Laura Bush est tellement monstrueuse --- Laura Bush is so monstrous
That she combs her hair with a chainsaw

Brigitte Bardot a toujours été un cageot --- Brigitte Bardot has been a dork
Elle effarouche les plus farouches de ses chiens --- She scares away the fiercest of her dogs
Leni Riefensthal est moche jusqu'à la moelle --- Leni Riefensthal is ugly to the bone
Le bon reflet de son art Hitlérien --- Good reflection of her Hitlerian art

Line Renaud fait un peu crapaud --- Line Renaud is a little toady
mais pas autant que Marie-France Garaud --- but not as much as Marie-France Garaud
Alors on ouvre les yeux et on respire mieux --- We open your eyes and breathe much better
quand elles se cachent derrière leurs Figaro --- When they hide behind their Figaro [rightish newspaper]

Mireille Darc a l'air assez smart --- Mireille Darc looks pretty smart
But even Mireille is a real beauty
à côté des dames Stirbois et Megret... --- Next to lady Stirbois and Megret… [extreme right cunts]

The clothes make the man and the tune makes the song
And as they say in French, from the outback to the palace:
Il n'y a pas de jolie fille à droite --- There's no pretty girl right of the aisle

Pardon mais, comme on dit en latin : Facit indignatio versum --- Sorry but, as they say in Latin: Facit indignatio versum

Depuis qu'elle envoie au président Chirac --- Since she sends to President Chirac
les plus belles de ses fleurs --- Her most beautiful flowers
Marie-José Pérec a perdu son éclat --- Marie-Jose Perec has lost its shine [she's a track runner]
sauf aux yeux des publicitaires --- Except in the eyes of advertisers

Et Françoise Hardy est bien plus jolie --- And Françoise Hardy is much prettier
Since she no longer welcomes her reactionary buddies
Les Spice Girls hideuses sont encore plus disgracieuses --- The hideous Spice Girls are even more unsightly
depuis qu'elles vénèrent Madame Thatcher --- Since they revere Madam Thatcher

A Salt Lake City au fond de mon pays --- At Salt Lake City at the bottom of my country
les filles du coin font vraiment peur --- Local girls are really scary
Car ces Américaines votent Républicain --- For these Americans vote Republican
Comme l'effrayante femme de mon frère... --- Like the terrifying wife as my brother…

The clothes make the man and the tune makes the song
And as we say in French, and God knows it's true :
Il n'y a pas de jolie fille à droite --- There's no pretty girl right of the aisle

Et, comme on dit en italien : Se non è vero, è bene trovato --- And, as we say in Italian: Se non è vero, è bene trovato

Eva Braun avait une dégaine si vilaine --- Eva Braun had such a nasty figure
que son fiancé l'a épousée en cachette --- That her fiancé married her in secret
Mais peu de temps après il a dû la regarder --- But shortly after he had to look at her
--- And shot a bullet in his head...
(Merci Eva, mais… ou étiez-vous en 37?) --- (Thanks Eva, but... where were you in 37?)

The clothes make the man and the tune makes the song
And when a woman turns right, it goes against her gifts
Elle va contre son cœur et son âme se déboîte --- It goes against her heart and her soul dislocates
Les ténèbres la pénètrent et le diable l'exploite --- Darkness penetrates her and the devil exploits her

Et ça se voit à la perte de sa beauté --- And it shows in the loss of her beauty
Sa nature révoltée dans ses yeux miroite --- Her rebellious nature sparkles in her eyes
Alors on dit en français, je ne l'ai pas inventé : --- And so we say in French, I did not invent it:
Il n'y a pas de jolie fille à droite --- There's no pretty girl right of the aisle

Et, comme on dit chez moi : On the left they're hot and on the right they're not --- And, as we say at home : On the left they're hot and on the right they're not

This is from Canada, in the 70s... Pure joy for me at the time, and still now. The band Harmonium was composed of excellent musicians.

A short piece: "Dixie"

A longer, instrumental piece: "Histoire Sans Paroles"

A poem that tells a story, y'all, but first some background on the man.

Born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow became a Harvard scholar versed in several European languages. He was heavily influenced by romanticism and made a name as a poet and novelist with works like Hyperion, Evangeline, Poems on Slavery and The Song of Hiawatha. Known for his translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy as well, Longfellow died on March 24, 1882, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Now, the poem set to music in French and English.

"The Albatross" by Charles Baudelaire

Ofttimes, for diversion, the men of the crew
Capture albatross, vast birds of the seas
That accompany, at languid, leisurely pace,
Boats on their way through bitter straits.

Having scarce been taken aboard
These kings of the blue, awkward and shy,
Piteously their great white wings
Let droop like oars at their sides.

This winged voyager, how clumsy he is and weak!
He just now so lovely, how comic and ugly!
One with a stubby pipe teases his beak,
Another mimics, limping, the cripple who could fly!

The Poet resembles this prince of the clouds,
Who laughs at hunters and haunts the storms;
Exiled to the ground amid the jeering pack,
His giant wings will not let him walk.

yep, Little Kind Words are important these days.

Thinking of the spoonerism "flutter bye" Reminded me of this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXfGPOHgImk

Part of the translation, y'all:

One good day, we will see
Arising a strand of smoke
Over the far horizon on the sea
And then the ship appears
And then the ship is white
It enters into the port, it rumbles its salute.

Do you see it? He is coming!
I don't go down to meet him, not I.
I stay upon the edge of the hill
And I wait a long time
but I do not grow weary of the long wait.
