@Lordyaswas,
Good story, that.
And they're still using barges on the Thames...I was near River Street, quite near Millennium Bridge and therefore St Paul's, watching some rubbish containers being loaded into one, last year.
I often think on the changes wrought in the great ports (London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Belfast) by containerisation.
There is a marvellous documentary "The Box the Changed the World" which is well worth seeking out.
The days of dock labour...I notice that the docks in Liverpool have a very high wall around; probably very necessary. There was a story of a Liverpool docker called Diesel. As in, "Dese'll do the missus.... dese'll do di daughter."

The first ever consignment of Scotch whisky to reach America intact, was the first one sent sealed in containers.

@McTag,
Yep....all gone. My Dad took me all round there when I was a nipper. Massive Dickensian buildings next to cleared areas where one or two were flattened. Old iron walkways way up high, and loading cranes standing idle and rusting.
All that area is 'Docklands' now, and the yuppies from the 80's have now sold on to the bankers and oligarchs. They do water skiing and yachting where the tobacco used to come in.
The smallest apartment there would set you back close to a million (£).

My Dad told me some tales of the docks, I can tell you.
I may post a few of the less bawdy ones here when I get the time.

I think I saw that programme about containers. Felixstowe figured large, if I remember correctly.

Hey, LAW, what were we supposed to bump up? I tried reading the BBC article and it shut down my equipment here in our Florida radio station.

I come from a military family and taught history, so I know about the blitz and the Luftwaffe.

My father in WWI; My brother and brother in law and first cousin and my oldest sister in WWII. Most info were orally told.

Here's a weird story:

We camped with a couple whose names were Charlie and Leah Bendorf. He was with the Luftwaffe and was shot down and made to do restoration work in several places in the U.S. He was, of course, German and his wife was from Kenya. Gets rid of the notion of "the master race", right?

Your photos were really great, and I'm glad that St. Paul's survived the blitz, buddy.

As General Sherman noted: "war is hell".

Well, it was pun day in my response; and restoration day from you. McTag's response was good as well.

@edgarblythe,
Loved that one by Sno0py and The Red Baron, edgar.

I really miss satt fs. He was a brilliant Japanese man. I asked him what was being played by one of The Sea World attractions and he furnished me with this:

Strange, y'all. When I was out today getting gasoline(petrol) as you Brits would say. I asked several people about their ethnicity and one guy said that I looked European.

@edgarblythe,
Odd, edgar. I know that music, but not the performers. Great one.

As I once shared with my friends here, I only listened to the music, and the performers. Never checked on the background.

I didn't know The Child Inside either, just the music.

Here's a great group doing an oldie that I really like.

@edgarblythe,
Fantastic Greek dancing, edgar and the song sung by that Russo was perfect I remember Zorba the Greek. Ah, this Greek feature is a reminder of Ellinas, our pug nose Greek.

How about some Russian dancing, y'all.

@edgarblythe,
Loved that one by Jerry Lee, edgar. I know that you have feet of lead, and I a bit afraid to dance since I broke my hip, but we can pretend, right?
