Both, I believe, Angel, but the particular observance in London was also a remembrance of the Battle for Britain and the anniversary of that date. Please feel free to explore this idea, folks.

Flowers are quite appropriate symbols of life for the dead; to remind us how fragile, and short life is. In this beautiful remembrance story the poppies are very appropriate especially because of their red color.

Thank you all, later.

All right, listeners, let's have a recap:

In WWI, the strategy was "trench warfare" , and although each soldier and his commander helped the other, it was in WWII that the buddy system developed because there were two in a fox hole. Hope that clears it up. Take a look at the lyrics to the song, and that may explain better.

Susanne Vega

Birth-Day

One thing I know
This pain will go
Step through all that's left to feel
I wait to meet my love made real

Don't move
Don't touch
Don't talk so much
Strip and find the place to kneel
I wait to meet my love made real

One thing I know
This day will go
Don't touch don't talk crawl the wall
She's the ticket to the future don't listen down the hall
You can say your prayer to the head of this bed
When it begins at your knees and goes right to your head
Birth-day

Strap me down from wrist to heel
I wait to meet my love made real
One thing I know
This day will go
Shake all over like an old sick dog
There's a needle here needle there
Tremble in the fog
It's a tight squeeze
Vice grip
Ice and fire
She's a hot little treasure
And the wave goes higher
Birth-day
Birth-day

Notes to the above song from one of Susanne's fans sites

Quote:
Notes:
That's the first line and I wasn't sure about whether to open the song with that, because sometimes you don't want to open with the pain. But on the other hand, the song was about having faith that the thing that you really desire will come, will be there, will come forth. How else do you put it? […] It's about having faith, but it wasn't only about my daughter. It was about the album, in a sense, because I had to go into it with faith that it would come forth and that it would be there at the end, and that it wouldn't fall apart in the middle. And so it was all worth it, and that's what that song is about. It's about the process of birthing, in the literal and metaphoric sense. […] I was looking for another song - I can see why, because you really have to be careful about what information you put in. You don't want to put in really gory details - I don't anyway. I think Sinead O'Connor has one or two songs where she mentions pregnancy, but you don't want to start using words like 'trimester' or you know…so I found it really difficult to figure out what you put in and what you don't put in, and how do you show the intensity of the feeling without grossing people out. Actually, if you didn't know what the song was about, you might think it was about drugs, sex... […] It's an aggressive act, it's really hard and if you want an edgy experience - People think about having a baby and you think of the lullabies, and the teddy bears, and that's fine. That comes afterwards. But in the middle of it, it's a deep struggle. And it's as edgy as anything you'll ever experience or one will ever experience - not you personally. It's amazing that everyone has experienced it, that people are born that way. It's astonishing.

Vega's are a Pasion...(spell is Ok).

Suzanne Vega

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud

They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am

Thank you, Walter and Francis, for the tribute to Suzanne. Interesting woman, she is. Guess I had better add another song to the ever increasing list:

SUZANNE VEGA

Widow's Walk

Consider me a widow, boys
and I will tell you why.
It's not the man, but it's the marriage
that was drowned.

So I walk the walk
and wait with watchful eye out to the sky,
Looking for a kind of vessel
I have never found.

Though I saw it splinter
I keep looking out to sea,
Like a dog with little sense,
I keep returning,

To the very area where
I did see the thing go down
As if there's something at the site
I should be learning.

Chorus:
That line is the horizon.
We watch the wind and set the sail,
But save ourselves when all omens
Point to fail.

If I tell the truth
Then I will have to tell you this
Though I grieve (and I believe
I feel it truly)

But I knew that ship was empty
By the time it hit the rocks,
We could not hold on
When fate became unruly.

So consider me a widow, boys,
And I have told you why.
Does the weather say
A better day is nearing?

I'll set my house in order now
And wait upon the Will
It's clear that I need
Better skill in steering...

Chorus:
That line is the horizon.
We watch the wind and set the sail,
But save ourselves when all omens
Point to fail.

Question for the day.
Exactly what is a widow' walk.

I love the way reporters get one's attention through alliteration:

London Back in Business after Bombing.

The Widow's Walk

...And so she climbs again the stairs,
That lead up to her prison where,
She spends her day in anxious prayer.
She wrings her hands in her despair.

She paces out her tiny cell.
Where everyday she's drawn to dwell.
As if bewitched by some strange spell
She stands a seaward-staring sentinel.

She sees no mast cut through the sky.
No flash of sailcloth greets her eye.
The screaming sea gulls laugh and cry.
Is it joy or doom that they prophesy?

She wonders at her Captain's fate?
What unknown danger makes him late?
And for her sons...she also waits-
As she braids and un-braids her worried plaits.

She regards the town from her woeful nest.
It is quiet, yes- But there's no rest.
She knows each home must brave this test.
There is a nagging dread in every breast.

She clutches tight her shawl of lace.
A tender gift from some distant place.
And she scans the sea for some faint trace.
Numb to the frosty day's embrace.

The sky is fearful lucid clear.
No mist to hide their presence near.
No distant speck to still her fear.
No callused hand to catch her tear.

Cruel evening bells are sadly rung.
Her day's watch wanes with the setting sun.
Another barren day is done.
She drowns in sleep's oblivion.

Till dawning wakes her with a start!
A new day's come! Hope fills her heart!
She sees her weeks of fears depart.
Praying "Today will end our days apart!"

And so she climbs again the stairs,
That lead up to her prison where,
She spends her day in anxious prayer.
She wrings her hands in her despair...

Well, listeners. Francis has answered our question with a song. Delightful, France.

There are several homes here in Florida with a widow's walk, and many are the ghost stories of the widow looking out to see eternally --waiting-- waiting--waiting.

and lest we forget, A thanks to our Raggedy for her celeb updates. Looking particularly at Robert the Bruce. He and E.B. White share the sacred aspect of the spider.

McTag will probably know the why's and wherefore's of that one.

Well, listeners, I have my own roof music today. It's called:

Bang, bang, bang and hammer, hammer, hammer. Just in time for the next hurricane. Ah, well. I guess it could be worse:

No moon at all
What a night
Even lightning bugs have dimmed their light
Stars have disappeared from sight
And there's no moon at all

Don't make a sound
It's so dark
Even Fido is afraid to bark
What a perfect chance to park
And there's no moon at all

If you need atmosphere
For inspiration dear
One touch will make it clear
Tonight is right and bright moonlight might interfere

No moon at all
Up above
This is nothing like they told us of
Just to think we fell in love
When there's no moon at all

Just change moon to roof, and that song will make sense. <smile>

I would also like to say to our Boston Bob that we continue to enjoy his background on people who are worthy of note. E.B. White's delightful story about Charlotte's Web is indeed an example of sacrifice.

Walter, thank you for the visualization of the news report. Poppies have been symbolic of rest and peace for sometime, have they not? and I particulary appreciate the poem by McCrae.

Well, McTag, the question about why poppies were dropped from the sky over the solemn occasion in London has been answered, right, Brit?

Every year since 1918 on Remembrance Sunday, on or near 11th November, poppies (as artificial flowers, buttonholes) are sold (or given in return for a donation to military charities), country-wide in the UK, in remembrance of those British servicemen and women fallen in all wars since then.
People then wear their poppy buttonhole as a mark of respect and remembrance.

Same here, McTag. Usually the volunteers stand in the street and you buy a paper poppy and put what you can in the extended cup.

Now, we'll take a brief respite to allow our European friends to catch up.

While we are waiting from our European reporters, a brief news item:

Space Shuttle
Countdown Begins for Discovery Launch
AP - 2 hours, 7 minutes ago
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - For the first time since the Columbia tragedy, NASA's countdown clocks were ticking down the hours, minutes and seconds to launch, heightening the anticipation for a Wednesday liftoff of Discovery. The countdown for the first space shuttle flight in 2 1/2 years began Sunday evening as Hurricane Dennis battered the Florida Panhandle off to the northwest. The mission's seven astronauts flew in from Houston on Saturday evening, a day early

Thanks, Walter. Of course I knew that since I have watched several launches from my back yard. Nothing is more beautiful than a night launch, especially when it is mirrored in my pond.

Wow! Great slide show, Walter. I think, perhaps, that Dennis took more lives in Cuba than anywhere else, but I'm not certain of that. Those curved bridges are a boon to crossing the inter coastal here, but can be deadly if one is driving across them in high winds.

Time for a station break, folks.

This is cyber space, WA2K radio.

I'll leave you with this surprising news item:

Jul 11, 7:26 AM ET

TUCSON, Ariz. - A high school in Vail will become the state's first all-wireless, all-laptop public school this fall. The 350 students at the school will not have traditional textbooks. Instead, they will use electronic and online articles as part of more traditional teacher lesson plans.

Not new news here, Letty. The school my son will start next month was the first in our state. (High school only, though. My son will be starting middle school.) They're called "tablet PCs," and you can write directly on them with a stylus. Here's a link to his school with more info on the concept.
