Reno Nevada by Ian Mathews

It's a long way down to Reno Nevada
It's a long way to your home
And the change in your pocket it's beginnig to grumble
And you reap just about what you sow
You can walk down the street
Pass your face in a window
you can go fooling around
you can work night and day take a chance on promotion
you can fall through a hole in the ground

Now there ain't no game like the game that you're playing
When you've got a little something to lose
And there ain't no time like the time that you're wasting
And you waste just about what you choose
There's a man at the table and you know he's been able
To return all the odds that you lay
But you can't feed your hunger
And you ain't getting younger
And your tounge it's got nothing to say

It's a long way down to Reno Nevada
It's a long way to your home
And the ground underneath you it's beginning to tremble
And the sky up above you has grown
There's a time to be moving a time to be groving
And a time just to climb up the wall
But the odds they've doubled
And it ain't worth the trouble
and you're never going nowhere at all

It's a long way down to Reno Nevada
It's a long way to your home
And the ground underneath you it's beginning to tremble
And the sky up above you has grown
There's a man at the table and you know he's been able
To return all the odds that you lay
But you can't feed your hunger
And you ain't getting younger
And your tounge it's got nothing to say

edgar, that was lovely. The very words that will lull me to sleep. Listeners, if you are ready to kick back and listen, please do.

Letty tunes out with a poem.

When all are curled up in a trundle,
When avians tuck under their wings,
When darkening comes to the twilight,
Please listen and you might hear things.

A purr from a cat in the corner,
A snore from Paco and such,
A chirp from a cricket; a mourner,
A resonance of crystal in hutch.

Don't touch; don't touch; don't touch.

Goodnight from Letty with love.

Reno Blues, or, Philadelphia Lawyer

Way out in Reno, Nevada,
Where romance blooms and fades,
A great Philadelphia lawyer
Was in love with a Hollywood maid.

"Come, love, and we'll go ramblin'
Down where the lights are so bright.
I'll win you a divorce from your husband,
And we can get married tonight."

Wild Bill was a gun-totin' cowboy,
Ten notches were carved in his gun.
And all the boys around Reno
Left Wild Bill's maiden alone.

One night when Bill was returning
From ridin' the range in the cold,
He dreamed of his Hollywood sweetheart,
Her love was as lasting as gold.

As he drew near her window,
Two shadows he saw on the shade;
'Twas the great Philadelphia lawyer
Makin' love to Bill's Hollywood maid.

The night was as still as the desert,
The moon hangin' high overhead.
Bill listened awhile through the window,
He could hear ev'ry word that he said:

"Your hands are so pretty and lovely,
Your form's so rare and divine.
Come go with me to the city
And leave this wild cowboy behind."

Now tonight back in old Pennsylvania,
Among those beautiful pines,
There's one less Philadelphia lawyer
In old Philadelphia tonight.

they call the wind maria...Jim Ed Brown

A way out here they've got a name for wind and rain and fire
The rain is Jack the fire is Joe and they call the wind Maria
Maria flows the stars around since the clouds're flying
Maria makes the mountains sound like cold wind out there dying
Maria Maria they call the wind Maria
Before I knew Maria's name heard her wails and whining
I had a girl and she had me and the sun was always shining
And then one day I left my girl left her far behind me
Maria blowed her love to me I need her here beside me
Maria Maria they call the wind Maria
Out here they've got a name for rain and wind and fire only
But when you're lost and all alone there ain't no name for lonely
Now I'm a lost and lonely man without the stars to guide me
Maria blowed her love to me I need her here beside me
Maria Maria they call the wind Maria

Good afternoon, gentle listeners. My name is Dr. S. N. Mirrors. I have been a clinical psychologist for many years and have helped thousands of people just like you to learn more about themselves. I want to help you lead a more fulfilling life...to have healthier relationships...and to become more comfortable with yourselves. I thank WA2K for giving me this forum.

Today's topic is EXISTENTIAL ANXIETY. Now, them're big words, friends. I'm a simple person myself. As long as my family is happy and healthy, as long as I have an interesting project to work on and I hit my fair share of good golf shots, and as long as my dog goes crazy with excitement when I get home, I'm happy. I haven't thought about the meaning of my life or my place in the world since I was a sophomore in college. Now I think about the meaning of your life instead. Hey, everybody's gotta have a job, right?

Existential Anxiety is just a fancy way of saying that some of you are experiencing general despair, alienation and a sense of emptiness about your life. Are you a cynic? Do you believe that life is essentially meaningless and that nothing you do or can imagine doing has any inherent value or usefulness? If so, you have a better-than-average chance of suffering from Existential Anxiety.

Take the following quiz and see if this could be your problem. Get a pencil and record "True" or "False" answers to the following questions.

1. I frequently have the feeling that my life has little or no purpose.
2. I mostly feel bored and indifferent by what is going on around me.
3. I find life exciting and challenging.
4. I often feel that my accomplishments are pretty worthless.
5. I usually feel that I am merely existing, not really living.
6. I generally feel that it is useless to discuss things with others because they never really understand.
7. I feel that I have more to look forward to in life than most others do.
8. My daily activities mostly seem to be rather pointless.
9. I generally feel depressed when I think about the future.
10. I have never found any type of work that I really enjoy.
11. My feelings don't seem to mean anything to anyone else.
12. I find religion to be rather empty.
13. I feel that it is useless to try to convince anyone else of anything.
14. I often feel that I have little to look forward to.
15. I do not feel that life is meaningless.
16. I never seem to enjoy things the way others seem to.
17. I generally feel that I am getting nowhere, no matter how much effort I put forth.
18. I feel that I have found more meaning in life than most others have.
19. I rarely take a strong interest in what I am reading or studying.
20. There is nothing in my past life that is particularly worth remembering.
21. I feel that my life is of no real importance to anyone.
22. I can always find something to do that I really enjoy.
23. I feel that there is little, if anything, in this world that is particularly worth pursuing over a long period.
24. My life seems to be rather aimless.
25. I find it difficult to believe strongly in anything.
26. Almost everyone I know seems to live a rather empty life.
27. Generally, I feel that what I do is pretty useless.
28. I usually don't know what to do with myself.
29. I do not have any important goals in life.
30. I mostly feel all alone in the world.
31. I seldom feel a strong sense of responsibility for any other person.
32. I feel that I am a productive person.

Now, let's see how many matches you have to the following scoring key:

TRUE: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31
FALSE: 3, 7, 15, 18, 22, 32

HOW DO YOU COMPARE?
0 matches = 15 percentile
2 matches = 30 percentile
5 matches = 50 percentile
8 matches = 70 percentile
10 matches = 85 percentile
Over 10 matches = Call my office immediately

---------------

Now, one of the cold, hard facts of life is that life is indeed meaningless. All of us professional psychologists know that, but you lay people are not supposed to have figured it out. Perhaps your problem is that you're just too smart. Perhaps you should be a psychologist yourself. Call us today for your free correspondence course in Professional Psychology. Only $39.99 for the first lesson, and easy payment plans are available. Call me, Dr. Mirrors at the Smoke N. Mirrors Counseling Center, 1+800+MIRRORS. Phone answered 24 hours. GET HELP TODAY!

The crucible of the pop psych. I think our resident psychologist just made a statement with background music provided by dys and edgar and a catchy little jingle thrown in by the book of color.

Good morning, WA2K listeners.

We are missing our celebrity informant, Raggedy, but I'm certain she will be here presently with news and pictures.

In the meantime, we'll await the return of the Virginia gentleman.

Your Celebrity Birthday reporter apologizes for her absence from WA2K due to a short holiday vacation and sincerely hopes all the crew and listeners at the station had a wonderful holiday.

Let's extend a belated December 27 birthday remembrance to:

Marlene Dietrich, born in Berlin, Germany in 1901; died 1992

http://www.frank-sinatra.de/dietrich.jpg

Miss Dietrich became a U.S. citizen in March, 1937 and received the U.S. War Department's 'Medal of Freedom', in 1947, for entertaining American troops for several years in Europe and Africa in WWII ,and her strong stand against Naziism.

And Happy December 28 birthday to:

Denzel Washington born 1954 in Mount Vernon, NY

Ah, Thanks, Raggedy. What an unusual voice Marlene had. Quite a chanteuse, she was.

And we all love DenZEL, I'm sure. Just watched him in the movie "Man on Fire" and he was excellent.

Hope you had a nice holiday, Raggedy.

If there is anyone in our studio who can interpret this news item, I do hope you will, as it is waaaaayyyy outta my league:

Excellent site, BBB. Actually, although I haven't read all the information, I was hoping for a brief explanation of how the earthquake affected the earth's rotation, and what that could mean to us.

Medical report for today. Sent to me by a retired life science professor.
*******************
I would have loved to have had the following for a test question
requesting evaluation for one of the statistics courses I taught in my
other life.

---- Doctors:
(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.
Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

Now Guns:
(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. Yes, that is 80
million.
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is
1,500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.
Statistics courtesy of F.B.I.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous
than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN,
BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR!

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat immediately. We must
ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Letty: I, too, heard the notion about the earth's rotation being altered and I wondered what they were talking about.
I reckon the best analogy I can come up with goes like this-I'm sure someone else can do better:
You are driving down the road with a nearly full cup of coffee between your legs. You have to brake suddenly, very suddenly. The liquid sloshes forward and the cup tips forward also. The tsunami moved an incredible amount of liquid (weight) from one area to another very quickly. I can see how that could cause earth to wobble a bit.

C.I. Guns don't kill people, doctors do? Love it! and you justified that soooooo numerically.

Real John,
That is an explanation that even Letty can grasp. Hmmm. Sure you weren't a geophysics major? Believe that I would rather own a bunch of art supply stores. Razz
