good evening msletty and all listeners to a2k - i hope you noticed that i,m posting early .

has Paul Robeson's birthday been forgotten ?
this song has not been forgotten :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJTD-ZtR_84

Quote:
Paul Leroy Robeson ( /ˈroʊbsən/ ROHB-sən;[2] April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American concert singer (bass), recording artist, actor, athlete, and scholar who combined advocacy for the Civil Rights Movement with support for Soviet Communism. He gained international attention for his work in the arts and he merged his artistic career with political activism to speak out for the equality of minorities and the rights of workers throughout the world. His Communist affiliations at the outset of the Cold War and during the age of McCarthyism brought scrutiny, conflict and retribution from the American government. His public persona became diminished, his income plummeted and he faced isolation from the Civil Rights Movement in the second half of the 20th century. Robeson endured McCarthyism and briefly returned to the artistic spotlight, but the events in the 1950s combined with ongoing severe health breakdowns well into the 1960s virtually destroyed his health. Robeson lived out the last years of his life privately in Philadelphia.

Robeson won a scholarship to Rutgers College and there he was an All-American football player, and valedictorian of his class. He further advanced his education attending Columbia Law School, while playing professionally in the National Football League (NFL) and singing and acting in off-campus productions. He graduated from law school and had a brief stint working as a lawyer before focusing his career on the arts. He made singing tours of the US and Europe, and became an international star of stage, screen, radio and film.

edgar, thanks for your comments, and Cathy's Clown by those brother was great.

Going to say goodnight with two songs.

remember Art Van Damme ?
one of the oldstyle accordion players - it's his birthday today !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRr1s-yk49w

Quote:
Art Van Damme (April 9, 1920[1] – February 15, 2010[2]) was a jazz accordionist.

Born in Norway, Michigan, he began playing the accordion at age nine and started classical study when his family moved to Chicago in 1934. In 1941 he joined Ben Bernie's band as an accordionist. He adapted Benny Goodman's music to the accordion. From 1945 to 1960 he worked for NBC, performing on The Dinah Shore Show, Tonight, The Dave Garroway Show and other radio and TV shows with Garroway. He recorded 130 episodes of the 15-minute The Art Van Damme Show for NBC Radio. He was no relation to Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Van Damme toured Europe and was popular with jazz listeners in Japan[3] and regularly won the domestic Down Beat reader's poll for his instrument in the same period.

@Barry The Mod,
I saw Maddy Prior live, I don't think it was with Steeleye Span, and she finished her set (very effectively, imho) with Da Doo Ron Ron.

I like Gaudete

edgar, MacArthur said "I shall return." Hurry Bach! Razz

Welcome back, Brit, McTag, and euro!

Barry, Great one by Thea Gilmore. Love London, and you sent me searching.

Thea Eve Gilmore (born 25 November 1979, Oxford, England) is a British female singer-songwriter. She began her career working in a recording studio, where she was discovered by her now long-time collaborator, producer and sometime co-songwriter Nigel Stonier, whom she married in October 2005.

Thanks for the introduction.

MacTag, I love Oscar Peterson, and I know every word to that great song. Couldn't get Gaudete to play here, but found out it was a hymn of ancient times.

euro, Great book show by Divine Comedy. I knew most of those writers, but the narrator was a bit difficult to understand.

Here's a birthday man. He deserves a tribute.

@edgarblythe,
Welcome back, edgar, and thanks for your comment. I had forgotten that Omar did the movie of Mayerling; Remember that one?

Love that one by Harry, In That Great Gettin' Up Morning was one I didn't know.

Here's a surprise. Today is Steven Segals birthday. I never cared for him in the martial arts genre, but had no idea that he sang.

No bad.

@edgarblythe,
thanks again for your comment, edgar. Mule Skinner Blues by Jose was funny. Rather reminds me of "..I got a mule her name is Sal, fifteen miles on the Eerie Canal"... Remember that one?

Going to say goodnight a bit early as it's been a frustrating day.

First, one to match McTag's Oscar Peterson's song.

Tony Martin is still with us. What a voice.

Now, Paul and Enrico.

So nice to have Dublin, London, Scotland and Ontario with us today.

From Letty with love to the world
