before we leave Albania , let's listen to some Albanian folk music :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OygdbmBPp-c&feature=related

( i wish i could understand the language )

Quote:
The Albanian language is a distinct Indo-European language that does not belong to any other existing branch. Sharing lexical isoglosses with Greek, Balto-Slavic, and Germanic, the word stock of Albanian is quite distinct. Once hastily grouped with Germanic and Balto-Slavic by the merger of PIE *ǒ and *ǎ into *ǎ in a supposed "northern group",[4] Albanian has proven to be distinct from these two, as this vowel shift is only part of a larger push chain that affected all long vowels.[5] Albanian does share with Balto-Slavic two features: (1) a lengthening of syllabic consonants before voiced obstruents and (2) a distinct treatment of long syllables ending in a sonorant.[6] Conservative features of Albanian include the retention of the distinction between active and middle voice, present tense and aorist.

Albanian is considered to have evolved from an extinct Paleo-Balkan language, usually taken to be either Illyrian or Thracian.

before signing off : Happy Birthday to " Peanuts " Hucko !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SugKG1k0iBg

Quote:
Michael Andrew "Peanuts" Hucko (April 7, 1918 - June 19, 2003) was an American big band musician. His primary instrument was the clarinet.

[edit] Early life and education :
He was born in Syracuse, New York, and moved to New York City in 1939; he played tenor saxophone with Will Bradley and Joe Marsala until 1940. After a brief time with Charlie Spivak, he joined the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band in which he served in Europe during World War II. During this time, Peanuts (the nickname comes from a childhood love of them) began to concentrate on the clarinet "because we did a lot of marching in sand, which was awkward with the tenor." With Miller's Uptown Hall Gang, he was featured in a hard-driving version of Stealin' Apples.

Finally, the big moon over the canal here has set. It awakened me once again quite early.

edgar, Loved The Little Richard concert.

hbg, you just brought the world to us through music.

Gerry Mulligan's Night Lights and Chopin; That marvelous Greek tenor; Melina's Never on a Sunday; Albania King Porter; Peanuts Hucko. Thank you Ontario for your delightful contributions.

Our art for today by Thomas Kinkade. He died recently.

Good morning. I hate that someone could spoil an event that way - blocking the boats.
I love Jackie Chan. Kinkaid was in his early fifties. I didn't check yet to see why he died. He had obvious skill, but I never considered his work good art.

@edgarblythe,
Somehow I have a hard time picturing Sir Elton heading down to the local
bucket o' blood to pick a fight.

Fun song, though.

Hey, Brit. Ah, dear. That "silly sod" had his fifteen minutes of fame.

Love Dusty and her companion doing Messing Around on The River.

edgar, Thanks for your comments. Yes, I guess "art is in the eye of the beholder". I like that painted picture, Texas.

That's a neat song by Sir Elton. Saturday Night's Alright for Fightin' . Wonder if he ever did.

Welcome back George S. I'll bet you'll like this one by Paul Robeson.

The boat race was restarted but Oxford steered too close to the Cambridge boat, resulting in Oxford losing one of it's oars,so their remaining 7 were no match for Cambridge's 8.The person steering Oxford's boat was a lady.I'll bet she'll get her leg pulled later....

@Barry The Mod,
Funny, Brit. Get her leg pulled? Love it. Ah, those old laws. Someone ought to rewrite them.
Row, Row, Row your boat is a round. Know what that Means. "Life is but a Dream."

Our poem for today by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Skye Boat Song
Robert Louis Stevenson

Sing me a song of the lad that is gone,
Say, could that lad be I?
Merry of soul he sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.

Mull was astem, Rum on the port,
Eigg on the starboard bow:
Glory of youth glowed in his soul:
Where is that glory now?

Sing me a song of the lad that is gone,
Say, could that lad be I?
Merry of soul he sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.

Give me again all that was there,
Give me the sun that shone,
Give me the eyes, give me the soul,
Give me the lad that's gone.

Sing me a song of the lad that is gone,
Say, could that lad be I?
Merry of soul he sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.

Billow and breeze, islands and seas,
Mountains of rain and sun,
All that was good, all that was fair
All that was me is gone.

Sing me a song of the lad that is gone,
Say, could that lad be I?
Merry of soul he sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.

You missed Paul's vocal version

edgar, I love Jean, Jean. Wasn't that written by Rod McHuen?

In general, contemporary Christian music is pretty awful. However, this contemporary Easter song is well-written and has a rousing melody:

Goodnight, Brit, and once again you sent me searching.

Bunny Wailer, (born Neville O'Riley Livingston, 10 April 1947, Jamaica), also known as Bunny Livingston and affectionately as Jah B, is a singer songwriter and percussionist and was an original member of reggae group The Wailers along with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. He is considered one of the longtime standard bearers of reggae music. He has been named by Newsweek as one of the three most important musicians in world music.

Don't know Bunny, but loved that song.

Wandel, welcome back to you as well. Didn't know that on by Dolly Parton, but He's Alive is excellent.

Saying goodnight with two songs. First, a funny one by Johnny Long inspired by our Barry's song.

Now a lullaby from Paul Robeson.
