before turning in for the night ( morning ) - here are birthday greetings for Maurice Ravel :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LLylhgR3uM&feature=fvst

Quote:
Joseph-Maurice Ravel (March 7, 1875 – December 28, 1937) was a French composer known especially for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental textures and effects. Much of his piano music, chamber music, vocal music and orchestral music has entered the standard concert repertoire.

Ravel's piano compositions, such as Jeux d'eau, Miroirs, Le tombeau de Couperin and Gaspard de la nuit, demand considerable virtuosity from the performer, and his orchestral music, including Daphnis et Chloé and his arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, uses a variety of sound and instrumentation.

Ravel is perhaps known best for his orchestral work Boléro (1928), which he considered trivial and once described as "a piece for orchestra without music".[1]

good night , to all !

Thanks to Dublin, Ontario, London for the great music. Wish I could acknowledge each one, but a bit out of kilter today.

Hurry back, Texas.

Two songs for the mid morning here.

First, Bobby Darin.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, thanks again for your comment. Leonard Cohen never ceases to amaze me. (I know. Amaze is supposed to be a boring word). He made respectable fun of everyone. Love it.

More synchronicity. Today is Chris Rock's birthday, and listen to the opening song.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks for your acknowledgement, edgar. Anita and Hank are great. He was a better poet than a singer, methinks. "...and my heart fell at your feet.."

Guess who is having a birthday today, Texas. Do you know him? Razz

I like the music in the background - not sure how well William Tell music fits Dickens, however - I agree with what the quoted authors have said about Dickens.

edgar, yes, William Tell didn't quit fit.

Love that Korean song, Texas. Kiss Because I'm a Girl sounds rather like a song that tells a story. Tried to locate the info behind it but no luck. Odd, because I encountered a lovely young couple in the super market the other day. It was obvious that they had ethnic attributes so, as usual, I asked. She was Italian and he was Korean. All three of us exchanged delightful comments and she broke into a wonderful smile and said that it was a pleasure meeting me.

Hey, London. Welcome back to you. You sent me searching concerning Minnie Riperton. Memory Lane was fabulous.

Minnie Julia Riperton (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her vocal range of five-and-a-half octaves, and her 1975 single "Lovin' You". She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from 1972 until her death in the summer of 1979. They had two children - music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph.

Speaking of Memory Lane, here's one by "old blue eyes".

There was a big full moon last evening, too. Guess I'll have to do my best impression of a coyote.

@edgarblythe,
Love that Don't Be Squeezing No Banana, edgar. Louis Prima was great on that one.

Also like that version of the cotton bowl weevil by Walter.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think that I shall do so with two songs.

First, since Louis mentioned coconuts and Walter mention cotton, here's a funny one by a Cotton man.

Hmmm! I thought Monty Python did that one originally.

Now, another moon song.

Goonight to all of you and it was great having London with us today.

Still dark here, and that big 'ol moon is hanging over the canal.

edgar, Thanks for your comment, and I Need a Man to Love by dear Janis was tragically beautiful "...I met a girl who sang the blues and I asked her for some happy news, but she just smiled and walked away..."

London, Bobbi Humphrey's Harlem River Drive was a great jazz song. Had to check and found that she was a woman. The flute in the background was perfect.

hbg, Moonlight and Roses is one beautiful song. Thanks Ontario. Love Cyd Charisse. She was married to Tony Martin, and he's still with us.

Thinking of John Williams today, but I found this tribute to old songs of the movies' themes.
