Soccer world championship in South Africa! Germany's first game will be tonight versus Australia. And even if I am not that interested in soccer - the emotions are too strong to resist!

@urs53,
Good morning, WA2K folks.

edgar, ah, The Pride of the Yankees. I had forgotten that Gary Cooper did that movie, and your "kid" John Travolta never ceases to amaze me. Thanks, Texas.

urs, Loved that soccer tribute with the dred lock boys. Fantastic, gal, and glad you are still with us.

Speaking of Africa, here are two songs for the morning.

Harry Belafonte recorded songs by and for South Africans. This song originally appeared in the album, Paradise in Gazankulu.

@edgarblythe,
Ah, edgar, that Reason to Believe was marvelous. I remember If I Were a Carpenter by him. What a sad ending to his life, Texas.

Well, today is Alley Sheedy's birthday, and I remember her best in The Breakfast Club. All of the crew are members of The Brat Pack.

Love Melodie D'Amour, edgar. I would awaken to hear birds singing in Virginia even in the winter.

Urs, I love it too, gal.

My dad was always saying, "Slow down and let me give you some history". When I was a kid, I tried to listen, but he droned on and on. So, of course, I went to the archives to see if I could remember his monologue on The Boxer Rebellion and what a shocker. There is a group with that name. Just have to play it, y'all.

@edgarblythe,
I saw that today was Yeats' birthday and I liked that tribute to him by Donovan, edgar, but when I recall his poem, "The Second Coming" I shudder.

Speaking of poetry, here is one that I never quite understood, but it didn't matter, because the imagery was so bright I read it over and over.

The Destruction of Sennacherib

The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea,
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

Like the leaves of the forest when Summer is green,
That host with their banners at sunset were seen:
Like the leaves of the forest when Autumn hath blown,
That host on the morrow lay withered and strown.

For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed;
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

And there lay the steed with his nostril all wide,
But through it there rolled not the breath of his pride;
And the foam of his gasping lay white on the turf,
And cold as the spray of the rock-beating surf.

And there lay the rider distorted and pale,
With the dew on his brow, and the rust on his mail:
And the tents were all silent, the banners alone,
The lances unlifted, the trumpet unblown.

And the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail,
And the idols are broke in the temple of Baal;
And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,
Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord!

-- George Gordon, Lord Byron

I don't know the history behind that, but it is vivid enough.

This is the only version of this song I truly like. I know other versions, but they do nothing for me.

@edgarblythe,
Ah, the King. I think my favorite by him is I Can't Help Falling in Love With You.

I know that one, edgar, but I didn't know that Elvis had done it.

I didn't know that John of Virginia could sing either. Smile
