Between The Wars

I was a miner
I was a docker
I was a railway man
Between the wars
I raised a family
In times of austerity
With sweat at the foundry
Between the wars

I paid the union and as times got harder
I looked to the government to help the working man
And they brought prosperity down at the armoury
We're arming for peace, me boys
Between the wars

I kept the faith and I kept voting
Not for the iron fist but for the helping hand
For theirs is a land with a wall around it
And mine is a faith in my fellow man
Theirs is a land of hope and glory
Mine is the green field and the factory floor
Theirs are the skies all dark with bombers
And mine is the peace we know
Between the wars

Call up the craftsmen
Bring me the draftsmen
Build me a path from cradle to grave
And I'll give my consent
To any government
That does not deny a man a living wage

Go find the young men never to fight again
Bring up the banners from the days gone by
Sweet moderation
Heart of this nation
Desert us not, we are
Between the wars

Pink Floyd
Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert

Brezhnev took afghanistan
begin took Beirut
galtieri took the union jack
and maggie over lunch one day
took a cruiser with all hands
apparently to make him give it back

Pink Floyd
The Fletcher Memorial Home

Take all your overgrown infants away somewhere
and build them a home a lttle place of their own
the fletcher memorial
home for incurable tyrants and kings

And they can appear tothemselves every day
on closed circuit t.v.
to make sure they're still real
It's the only connection they feel
"ladies and gentelmen, please welcome reagan and haig
mr. begin and friends mrs. thatcher and paisley
mr. brezhnev and party
the gost of mccarthy
the memories of nixon
and now adding colour a group of anonymous latin-
american meat packing glitterati"

did they expect us to treat them with any respect

they can polish their medals and sharpen their
smiles, and amuse themselves playing games for a while
boom boom, bang bang, lie down you're dead

safe in the permanent gaze of a gold glass eye
with their favourite toys
they'll be good girls and boys
in the fletcher memorial home for colonial
wasters of life and limb

is everyone in?
are you having a nice time?
now the final solution can be applied

Pink Floyd
Southampton Dock

They disembarked in 45
and no one spoke and no one smiled
there were too many spaces in the line
gathered at the centaph
all agreed with the hand on heart
to sheath the sacrificial knifes
but now

she stands upon southampton dock
with her handkerchief
and her summer frock clings
to her wet body in the rain
in quiet desperation knuckles
white upon the slippery reins
she bravely waves the boys goodbye again

and still the dark stain spreads between
his shoulder blades
a mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves
and when the fight was over
we spent what they had made
but in the bottom of our hearts
we felt the final cut

When the Tigers Broke Free
Pink Floyd

It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

THE MERRY-GO-ROUND BROKE DOWN
Shep Fields and Russ Morgan - 1937

Oh! The merry-go-round broke down
As we went 'round and 'round,
Each time 'twould miss we'd steal a kiss
While the merry-go-round went
Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah,
Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah,

The merry-go-round broke down
And made the darndest sound
The lights went low, we both said, "Oh"
And the merry-go-round went
Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah,
Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah,

Oh! What fun, a wonderful time
Finding love for only a dime

The merry-go-round broke down
But you don't see me frown
Things turned out fine and now she's mine
Cause the merry-go-round went
Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah,
Um-pah-pah, um-pah-pah,
The merry-go-round broke down

FRENESÍ
Artie Shaw
- English words by Ray Charles and S.K. Russell
- Spanish words and music by Alberto Dominguez
1940

Some time ago
I wandered down into old Mexico
While I was there
I felt romance everywhere
Moon was shining bright
And I could hear laughing voices in the night
Everyone was gay
This was the start of their holiday
It was fiesta down in Mexico
And so I stopped a while to see the show
I knew that frenesí meant "Please love me"
And I could say frenesí
A lovely señorita caught my eye
I stood enchanted as she wandered by
And never knowing that it come from me
I gently sighed frenesí
She stopped and raised her eyes to mine
Her lips just pleaded to be kissed
Her eyes were soft as candle-shine
So how was I to resist?
And now without a heart to call my own
A greater happiness I've never known
Because her kisses are for me alone
Who wouldn't say frenesí?

Bésame tu a mí
Bésame igual que mi boca te besó
Dame el frenesí
Qui mi locura te dió
Quien si no fui yo

We Three (My Echo, My Shadow, and Me)
The Ink Spots
Words and Music by Dick Robertson and Sammy Mysels
1940-41

We three, we're all alone
Living in a mem-o-ry
My echo, my shadow, and me

We three, we're not a crowd
We're not even company
My echo, my shadow, and me

What good is the moonlight
The silvery moonlight that shines above?
I walk with my shadow
I talk with my echo
But where is the one I love?

We three, we'll wait for you
Even till eter-ni-ty
My echo, my shadow, and me

SPOKEN: "We three we're all alone. Seems like we're livin' in a memory. That's my
echo my shadow and me. We three we ain't no crowd. Fact is we ain't even
company. That's my echo my shadow and me. You know I been wonderin'-what good is the
moonlight that silvery moonlight that shines way, way up above? Yeah, I walk with my
shadow, I talk with my echo, but where is that gal that I love?"

We three, we'll wait for you
Even till eter-ni-ty
My echo, my shadow, and me

Me And My Shadow
Frank Sinatra
(This is the duet with Sammy Davis, Jr.)

Like the wallpaper sticks to the wall
Like the seashore clings to the sea
Like you'll never get rid of your shadow
Frank, you'll never get rid of me

Let all the others fight and fuss
Whatever happens, we've got us.

Me and my shadow
We're closer than pages that stick in a book
We're closer than ripples that play in a brook
Strolling down the avenue
Wherever you find him, you'll find me, just look
Closer than a miser or the bloodhound's ?????

Me and my shadow
We're closer than smog when it clings to L.A.
We're closer than Bobby is to J.F.K.
Not a soul can bust this team in two
We stick together like glue

And when it's sleeping time
That's when we rise
We start to swing
Swing to the skies
Our clocks don't chime
What a surprise
They ring-a-ding-ding!
Happy New Year!

Me and my shadow
And now to repeat what I said at the start
They'll need a large crowbar to break us apart
We're alone but far from blue

Before we get finished, we'll make the town roar
We'll make all the late spots, and then a few more
We'll wind up at Jilly's right after Toot's Shore
Life is gonna be we-wow-whee!
(Here comes the party!)
For my shadow and me!

Say Frank?
What is it, Sam?
Do me a favor?
What do you want, now?
Would you mind taking it, just one more time?
From the top?
No! From the ending!
Wonderful!

And while we are swinging, to mention a few
We'll drop in at Danny's, The Little Club too
But wind up at Jilly's, whatever we do
Life is gonna be we-wow-whee!
(Wow!)
For my shadow and me!

Frank?
Oh, forget it Sam.

Look At Me
John Lennon

Look at me
Who am I supposed to be?
Who am I supposed to be?
Look at me
What am I supposed to be?
What am I supposed to be?
Look at me
Oh my love, oh my love

Here I am
What am I supposed to do?
What am I supposed to do?
Here I am
What can I do for you?
What can I do for you?
Here I am
Oh my love, oh my love

Look at me, oh please look at me, my love
Here I am
Oh my love

Who am I?
Nobody knows but me
Nobody knows but me
Who am I?
Nobody else can see
Just you and me
Who are we?
Oh my love, oh my love, oh my love

i've posted this one before, but it's such a great song, i'm gonna post it again

Best Imitation Of Myself
Ben Folds

I feel like a quote out of context
Withholding the rest
So I can be for you what you want to see
I got the gesture and sound
Got the timing down
It's uncanny, yeah, you think it was me
Do you think I should take a class
To lose my southern accent
Did I make me up, or make the face till it stuck
I do the best imitation of myself

The "problem with you" speech
You gave me was fine
I liked the theories about my little stage
And I swore I was listening
But I started drifting
Around the part about me acting my age
Now if it's all the same
I've people to entertain
I juggle one handed
Do some magic tricks and
The best imitation of myself

Maybe I'm thinking myself in a hole
Wondering, who I am when I ought to know
Straighten up now time to go
Fool somebody else, fool somebody else

Last night I was east with them
And west within
Trying to be for you what you wanna see
But I can't help it with you
The good and bad comes through
Don't want you hanging out with
No one but me
Now if it's all the same
It comes from the same place
And if my mind's somewhere else
You won't be able to tell
I do the best imitation of myself
Yes it's uncanny to see
You'd really think it was me
The best imitation of myself
The best imitation of myself

Goodnight my friends at WA2K radio.

Lady, are you crying, do the tears belong to me
Did you think our time together was all gone
Lady, you've been dreaming, I'm as close as I can be
I swear to you our time has just begun

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind
I promise I will stay right here beside you
Today our lives were joined, became entwined
I wish you could know how much I love you

Lady, are you happy, do you feel the way I do
Are there meanings that you've never seen before
Lady, my sweet lady, I just can't believe it's true
And it's like I've never ever loved before

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind
I promise I will stay right here beside you
Today our lives were joined, became entwined
I wish you could know how much I love you

Lady, are you crying, do the tears belong to me
Did you think our time together was all gone
Lady, my sweet lady, I'm as close as I can be
I swear to you our time has just begun

Words and music by john denver

My adieu song, yawl.

I had no idea a screen could be cleaned from the inside too! What a difference! Every keystroke you make, each graphic you pull up to view, makes your monitor screen "cloudy" because of the pixels and the light particles moving to make your images on your screen. This is a quick screen cleaner which aids in making your monitor clearer and more vibrant. It only takes a moment and it doesn't stay on your computer like a screensaver.

Good morning, WA2K radio fans.

How wonderful to hear all the lovely songs that dj, edgar, and everyone have shared with our audience.

In listening to dj's Pink Floyd song about WWII, it surfaced in my mind about WWI (the great war?) and I found a site that was amazing as it talked about the "Lost Voices" from the French soldiers who never made it but left behind something of their existence:

Wilhelm de Kostrowitsky (pseudo: Guillaume APOLLONAIRE) Born in Rome, August 25, 1880. Habitue of Montmarte, close friend of Picasso, poet, short story writer, journalist, art critic. Served as a volunteer in the French Army 1915, serving first in the artillery and subsequently, as a lieutenant, in the infantry. Winner of the Croix de Guerre. Sustained a head wound in the trenches. Invalided out of service. Died from combination of influenza and war wounds in 1918, just prior to the Armistice. His war verse was published in a volume entitled CALLIGRAMMES (1918). "His inspirational influence has reached well into the 20th century, and he stands as a major figure in the first rank of European modernism, the greatest French poet of his generation." (Peter Read in Tim Cross's The Lost Voices of World War I)

I was awakened this morning to a lightning and thunder storm. The heavens were speaking in surly tones, listeners, and then I looked at Bob's Screen Cleaner, and decided that it was going to be a great day.

When you're down and out
Lift up your head and shout
There's gonna be a great day
Angels in the sky
Promise that be by and by
There's gonna be a great day
Gabriel will warn you
Some early morn
You will hear his horn
It's not far away
Lift up your head and say
There's gonna be a great day
Great day

When you're down and out
Lift up your head en shout
There's gonna be a great day
Angels in the sky
Promise that by en by
We're gonna see a great day
Gabriel will warn you
Somebody born
You will hear his horn, his horn
It's not far away
Lift up your head and say
There's gonna be a great day
When the skies went darker, oh Lord!
Came Noah's Ark, oh Lord!
Amen and Amen!
Amen and Amen!

He came in January, February, March, April, May, June
July, and August, September October, November,
De De December
It was a great day
It was a great day
One of those great days
And on Judgment Day
If you believe he will receive you and me
Gabriel will warn you
Some early morn
You will his horn, his horn
It's not far away
Lift up your head and say
There's gonna be a great
We're gonna see a great
There's gonna be,
Be a great day.

I tried the screen cleaner too, because I trust you.

Seems to have worked a treat. Thanks very much.

Nobody has guessed my song yet, for which I posted two lines. Unless I missed it. Maybe you don't care to. Maybe you would like to, but can't.
The last clue, and the last line of the song, is

"The po' boy's on the line."

McTag, honey. I think we all missed it; I know I did, but I cheated and found this one:

Man came to the door, I say 'for whom were you lookin'?'
Says 'your wife', I say 'she's busy in the kitchen cookin''
Po' boy, where you been?
Already told you, won't tell you again

I say 'how much you want for that, I'll go into the store'
Man says 'three dollars' 'all right', I say, 'will you take four?'
Po' boy, never say die
Things will be all right, by and by

Workin' like in a main line, workin' like the devil
The game is the same it's just up on another level
Po' boy, dressed in black
Police at your back

Po' boy in a red hot town
Out beyond the twinklin' stars
Ridin' first class train
Makin' the rounds
Try to keep from fallin' between the cars

Othello told Desdemona "I'm cold, cover me with a blanket"
"By the way, what happened to that poisoned wine?"
She said "I gave it to you, you drank it"
Po' boy, layin' 'em straight
Pickin' up the cherries fallin' off the plate

Time and love has branded me with its claws
Had to go to Florida, dodgin' them Georgia laws
Po' boy in the hotel called the Palace of Bloom
Called down to room service, said 'send up a room

My mother was the daughter of a wealthy farmer
My father was a traveling salesman, I never met him
When my mother died my uncle took me in to run a funeral parlor
He did a lot of nice things for me and I won't forget him

All I know is that I'm thrilled by your kiss
I don't know any more than this
Po' boy, pickin' up sticks
Build you a house out of mortar and bricks

Knockin' on the door, I say 'who is it, where you from?'
Man say 'Freddie', I say 'Freddie who?'
He say 'Freddie or not, here I come'
Po' boy 'neath the stars that shine
Washin' them dishes, feedin' them swine.

Bob Dylan?

Hey, all. Everyone missed my line as well. Razz

Morning everyone. It's a gorgeous day here. Now that's not easy to say because I'm still coffeeless. First I want to thank you for your thank you's. On to the business of radioing. I'm going to ask Bobby Rydell to take the mike.

The Alley Cat Song
by Bobby Rydell
album:

The Alley Cat Song

Artist: Bobby Rydell -from his "Top Hits Of 1963" LP
Words by Jack Harlen and Music by Frank Bjorn
Despite the title of the LP, the instrumental version by Bent Fabric charted at # 7 in
the late summer of 1962. Danish title is "Omkring et Flygel" (Around the Piano)

He goes on the prowl each night
Like an alley cat
Looking for some new delight
Like an alley cat

She can't trust him out of sight
There's no doubt of that
He just don't know wrong from right
Like an alley cat

He meets them
And loves them
And leaves them
Like that "Catsanova" does

That's no way to treat a pal
She should tell him "Scat!"
Aren't you sorry for that gal
And her alley cat?

He meets them
And loves them
And leaves them
Like that "Catsanova" does

He don't know what faithful means
There's no doubt of that
He's too busy makin' scenes
Like an alley cat

And that's the sad, sad tale of a lonesome quail
And her alley cat.
