All this stuff about Hawaiian music, I owned all the original Martin Denny LP's during the "Lounge Music" and "Exotic Music" era at the onset of stereo recording and ever more hi tech home sound equipment. I took this over to my friend's Sunday gathering in Whittier, Ca, so we would pour the Mai Tai's and listen to his Bozak speakers, which picked up every high-end tinkle so crystal clear, it sounded impossible at the time.

Good morning WA2K radio audience.

Wow! L.W. Martin Denny's Exotica was beautiful. I could clearly hear the birds chirping. Thanks, buddy.

edgar, (promise that I won't say amazing) China Nights was fantastic. I had no idea that Sakamoto did that, and I knew it. Thanks, Texas.

Hey, Brit. I am delighted with Energy Flow. More of the same by that talented Japanese man.

Never heard Daniel Merriweather, but Red was lovely and The Proclaimers also did Hard Times Come Again No More. Now that is amazing.

Well, folks, I guess we can proclaim today Oriental Day. How about Limehouse Blues, then.

Hope that blue skies follow the rain today, and if I missed anyone's music, blame it on staying up to watch "Without a Trace."

@Letty,
The tropical "birds" are actually members of the band who know how to mimic the chirping. Others in exotic music craze (which was often world music, of course) were Arthur Lyman who recorded in the Hawaiian Hilton Geodesic Dome (the ambient reverberation was really unique) and Les Baxter who ventured into India and even outer space.

He often mixed in jazz like in this tribute:

The only Arthur Lyman I could find from the geodesic dome was an original LP recording of "Caravan" -- he would also mix in jazz riffs into the exotic music treatment (don't ask me the reasoning behind the shot of the diner table juke box), and the vibraphone was his instrument. There's a few others, several shot at the Makai Bar live on the Big Island (much later in life than when he recorded "Taboo" and other LP's), including Les Baxter's original famous hit "Quiet Village:"

Good afternoon, WA2K radio. Wow! It has finally stopped raining and my pond out back is beautiful.

edgar, that version of Sayonara was delightful. Thanks, buddy; of course we all like Yellow Bird. <grins>

Mr. Wizard, Arthur Lyman's tribute to Les Baxter was also a lovely memory, and Caravan was fabulous. Your explanation of the exotic birds being imitated was unbelievable. Great!

Found a couple of songs that I would like to play for y'all.

First, a delightful rendition of Chinatown by a talented trio of kids.

and now, all, Manhattan Transfer in Singapore

Been searching for the background of the expression "raining cats and dogs" but it seems to be unknown.

@edgarblythe,
Well, edgar, I didn't know that Manhattan Transfer got their name from John Dos Passos' book, Manhattan Transfer.

That montage of Japanese songs by Miyuki Nakajma was wonderful. She wrote songs for everyone, it seems. What a lovely voice, too.

Well, folks, we know that Sayanaro means "goodbye" Now here is one by a lovely lady that means "I Am Sorry". Harray Belafonte did that one. It was satt fs that clued me in. Alas, y'all, I cannot find his version on a video, but here are the lyrics.

Gomen nasai I'm so sorry gomen nasai
I am so sorry I made you cry
Won't you forgive me dear
Goman nasai nights have been lonely
My days are blue, because I made a fool of you
Won't you forgive me dear

My butterfly heart has brought you pain
Won't you forgive won't you forget
Let's be sweethearts again

Goman nasai nights would be heaven
Love fill my days
If you'd believe me when I say
I love you gomen nasai
I love you gomen nasai

And now for a video saying "sorry".

I have Belafonte on vinyl singing Sakura with a high school choir, album title: Streets I Have Walked. Until recently, I thought that song was their national anthem. Surprise, this is it:

4 explanations I found:
1) Cats and dogs slept on the roofs of thatched houses built into hills. A heavy rain might send them through the roof onto residents below;
2) The sound of thunder was reminiscent of dogs and cats fighting;
3) In mythology, cats = rain while dogs = wind;
4) During the bubonic plague, which infected animals as well as people, a heavy rain would flush the bodies of cats and dogs into the city streets.
