Letty, I really don't have a wealth of knowledge, I just love music.

And, bobsmythhawk, that was absolutely the loveliest welcome. Thank you so much.

This one is for you

And, just to relax to something perfect for a peaceful Sunday. Jean-Pierre Rampal is one of my favorite musicians. I saw him perform in person as many times as I possibly could.

This was a great crossover collaboration.

firefly, both your native American tribute and the French flautist were relaxing. Love the flute, but one must have the proper armature to create the sound that is so lilting. Thanks for both contributions.

That flute reminded me of Peter and the Wolf. What a wonderful concerto for children and adults to understand the instruments in a symphony.

Let's see how it all started with Walt Disney himself. We will follow with the explanation of what instrument represents which character.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaHc01uwGXg

Instrumentation
Peter and the Wolf is scored for flute, oboe, clarinet in A, bassoon, 3 horns, trumpet, trombone, timpani, triangle, tambourine, cymbals, castanets, snare drum, bass drum and strings.

Each character in the story has a particular instrument and a musical theme, or leitmotif:

Bird: flute
Duck: oboe
Cat: clarinet
Grandfather: bassoon
Wolf: 3 French horns
Hunters (gunshots): timpani and bass drum (The hunters' theme is actually introduced by the woodwinds)
Peter: string instruments.

Firefly, back in a bit to listen to more of your delightful renderings.

That was a wonderful Disney clip. I remember how I loved listening to Peter and the Wolf when I was a child.

Your mention of music that helps children to understand the instruments in a symphony reminded me of this work. It focuses on each section of the orchestra.

firefly, what great songs. Thanks you for Dvorak. I especially like his New World Symphony.

Of course, everyone loves the "man in black', and Carley Simon is one of my favorites. Harrison Ford ought to be quite pleased.

Ah, we do it all here on our wee cyber station.

Now it's jazz time again, folks, and nothing is so cool as Paul and Dave.

Ain't nothin' like a dame and Pavarotti, M.D. and thanks for that song. I'll drink to that.

Stray Cat, glad you like it, gal. I wanted to do something by Elvis, but you're better at that than I.

Hey, y'all. Today is Bumble Bee Boogie's birthday. Here's one for her.

Yitwail you could not have posted anything I could have enjoyed more. Those are my two favorite singers of all time. One of the first live opera performances I ever saw was Sutherland's Lucia. I then saw her Lucia again about 20 years later, near the end of her career, although I did see her in other roles in-between. The only time I think I saw both Sutherland and Pavarotti together in the same opera was Daughter of the Regiment, and it was marvelous. I believe that Sutherland was quite helpful to Pavarotti in getting him worldwide attention through his appearances with her in the early part of his career. She will always be, for me, "La Stupenda".
Thank you, again, for the surprise of suddenly getting to see both of them together.

After Midnight

I've listened to some of today's music, but there is too much to catch up on all of it. I hope to do better tomorrow.

Stray Cat, I got just enough of Edith Piaf to know that she was in a crowd and ran into some dude and they got drunk, right? Razz We all know that Sunday is a day of rest, so Melina means NEVER ON THE SABBATH. Love it! Hey, gal. I'm like them funny looking guitars as well.

edgar, That was a most unusual rendition of Around Midnight. Love Herbie Hancock, Texas, and thanks.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think I'll play a bit of a farce myself.

(named my alligator after the title of this song)

Goodnight to everyone and it's been fun.

From Letty with love
