Breaking news:

The Pope has died.

Although I am not a Roman Catholic, I realize the significance of his death. For Pope Paul:

All in the April evening,
April aires are abroad.
The sheep with their little lambs,
Passed me by on the road.
The sheep with their little lambs,
Passed me by on the road.
All in the April evening,
I thought on the lamb of God.

The lambs were weary and crying,
With a weak human cry.
I thought on the lamb of God,
Going meekly to die.

Up in the blue, blue mountains,
Dewy pastures are sweet.
Rest for the little bodies,
Rest for the little feet.

But for the lamb, the lamb of God,
Up on the hillside steep,
Only a cross, a cross of shame.
Two stark crosses between.

All in the April evening,
April aires were abroad,
I saw the sheep with their lambs,
And thought on the lamb of God.

A moment of respectful silence.

Yes, our posts crossed, McTag, as well as Eva's and mine. High tea for McTag and his wife. Fond memories.

<smile>Talking at cross porpoises, I guess.

Daylight saving time begins tomorrow in America. Is it already in effect in Europe? There's a mnemonic device helping us to remember just how to set our clocks, but I've forgotten it.
Quiz:

Who first instituted this time in the U.S.?

Francis, give us a link to Panz's thread when you are up and about.

The news is full of Pope Paul's demise, and will be for some time, I suspect.

All in the April Evening was a lovely song that we sang in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church.

Some magnificent tenor is singing Ave Maria in the background. Quite moving and done to perfection. A small tear just listening.

don't know about mnemonic, but i was taught spring forward, fall back

speaking of don't know much

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much geography
Don't know much trigonometry
Don't know much about algebra
Don't know what a slide rule is for

But I know that one and one is two
And if this one could be with you
What a wonderful this would be

I don't claim to be an "A" student
But I'm trying to be
Maybe my being an "A" student baby
I can win your love for me

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

But I know that one and one is two
And if this one could be with you
What a wonderful this would be

some songs from a little known band the wonder stuff

Wonder Stuff
It's Yer Money I'm After Baby

Don't give me love, oh no none of that stuff
cos it's yer money I'm after, baby.
Your love and your kisses they're
just not enough, it's just yer
money I'm after, baby.

Well I know that it's hard
and I know that it's tuff
when each thing you're giving me
is just not enough.
Forget your heart, it's your bank
I wanna break, it's just
yer money I'm after, baby.

Heaven's above, no I'm not in love
it's just yer money I'm after baby.
I'm sticking with you and, oh,
that's just because
it's yer money I'm after, baby.

I'm in love with myself
and nobody else

Size Of A Cow Lyrics

Don't you think it's funny that nothing's what it seems
When you're not looking forward?
Me, I'd like to think life is like a drink
And I'm hoping that it tastes like bourbon

You know that I've been drunk a thousand times
And these should be the best days of my life
Life, it's not what I thought it was

Damn blast, look at my past
I'm ripping up my feet over broken glass
I said, Oh wow, look at me now
I'm building up my problems to the size of a cow
The size of a cow

You know it would be strange to live life in a cage
And only believe the things you see that are written on the page
How easy would it be home in time for tea
And stop feeling like a sailboat rocking on the sea

You know that it's been sunk a thousand times
And these should be the best days of my life
Life, it's not what I thought it was

Damn blast, look at my past
I'm ripping up my feet over broken glass
I said, Oh wow, look at me now
I'm building up my problems to the size of a cow
The size of a cow
The size of a cow

You know that I've been drunk a thousand times
And these should be the best days of my life

Damn blast, look at my past
I'm ripping up my feet over broken glass
I said, Oh wow, look at me now
I'm building up my problems to the size of a cow
The size of a cow

Damn blast, look at my past
I'm ripping up my feet over broken glass
I said, Oh wow, look at me now
I'm building up my problems to the size of a cow
The size of a cow
The size of a cow

Wonder Stuff
Give Give Give Me More More More

Well I hope I make more money than this in the next world.
I hope there's a lot more in it there for me.
I'd like my trousers pressed and my shoes
shined up by a rich girl,
who's only care in the world is me.

"But are these all the brains I'm entitled to have?
Don't try to make me happy, when I'm happy feeling bad.
I've got no manners or a hand you shake,
and when I won't tell the truth it's easier to fake."

So....Give Give Give Me More More More
I'd like it all.

Is the bank big enough?
coming ready or not to the next world.
I hope there's a whole lot more in it there for me.
I'd like my friends to be rich and I'll never do a stitch,
in the next world, and my only care in the world is me.

"IS THE BANK BIG ENOUGH
COMING READY OR NOT TO THE NEXT WORLD

they also did a great cover of this song

I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy

First time that I saw you, girl, I knew that I just had to make you mine
But it's so hard to talk to you with fellas hangin' round you all the time
I want you for my sweet pet
But you keep playin' hard to get
Goin' around in circles all the time

Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy

I finally got to talk to you and I told you just exactly how I felt
Then I held you close to me and kissed you and my heart began to melt
Girl, you've got control of me
'Cause I'm so dizzy I can't see
I need to call a doctor for some help

Dizzy
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy
My head is spinnin'
Like a whirlpool, it never ends
And it's you, girl, makin' it spin
You're makin' me dizzy
Oh, I'm so dizzy
You're makin' me dizzy
Yeah, I'm so dizzy

dj, The goddess of memory, my prolific friend. Thinking about The Lettermen's "Traces of Love" Can't find the lyrics, I'm afraid, but the lyrics go something like:

Memories echo through the traces of my mind. Can you find them for me?

closest i could find but there was no indication of what group preformed it, it was simply marked Classic - Miscellaneous

Traces Of Love

Faded photographs,
Covered now with lines and creases,
Tickets torn in half,
Memories and bits and pieces,

Traces of love
Long ago
That didn't turn out right
Traces of love...

Ribbons from her hair,
Souvenirs of days together,
The rings she used to wear,
Pages from an old love letter,

Traces of love
Long ago
That didn't turn out right
Traces of love
With me tonight.

I close my eyes
And say a prayer
That in her heart she'll find
A trace of love still there,
Somewhere....

(Instrumental)

Traces of hope
In the night
That she'll come back and dry
These traces of tears
From my heart.

Dizzy, I know that one, dj, even Dizzy Gillespie would approve. Smile

I can see,
There ain't no room for me.
You're only holdin' up your heart in sympathy.
If there's another man,
Then girl I understand.
Go on and take his hand,
And don't you worry 'bout me.
I'll be blue,
And I'll be cryin' too.
But girl you know I only want what's best for you.
What good is all my pride,
If our true love has died.
Go on and be his bride,
And don't you worry 'bout me.

I'll be strong,
I'll try to carry on.
Although you know it won't be easy when your gone.
I'll always think of you,
The tender love we knew.
But somehow I'll get through,
So don't you worry 'bout me.
Ooo-oo,

Baby.
Sweetie pie,
Before you say goodbye.
Remember if he ever leaves you high and dry.
Don't cry alone in pain,
Don't ever feel ashamed.
If you want me again,
Just don't you worry 'bout me.
I love you,
No matter what you do.
I'll spend my whole life waitin' if you want me too.
And if this is goodbye,
You know I'd rather die.
Than let you see me cry,
'Cause then you'd worry 'bout me.

I'll be strong,
I'll try to carry on.
Although you know it won't be easy when your gone.
I'll always think of you,
The tender love we knew.
But somehow I'll get through,
So don't you worry 'bout me.
I'll be strong,
I'll try to carry on.
Although you know it won't be easy when your gone.
I'll always think of you,
The tender love we knew.
But somehow I'll get through,
So don't you worry 'bout me.

Frankie Valli? My word!

i'm not a big fan of most contemporary country music, but one girl at work puts on a country station once and a while and i always end up sing along to this song

Darryl Worley
Awful, Beautiful Life

I woke up early with a poundin' in my head
I'd been out the night before with all my friends
A little worried, kinda wonderin' what I did
I said, " Lord, please forgive me for my sins."
My wife wanted to kill me, but she tried to save me first
"You're goin' if I have to drag your butt to church."

I love this crazy, tragic,
Sometimes almost magic,
Awful, beautful life

I read the hymns and kinda sorta sang along
And made it through the Sunday sermon wide awake
We met the family for dinner at our home
Drank some beer, watched a game,
and cooked some steaks
My little brother had a big fight with his wife
And my poor mother sat between'em both all night

I love this crazy, tragic,
Sometimes almost magic,
Awful, beautful life

We said a prayer for Cousin Michael in Iraq
We're all aware that he may never make it back
We talked about the way we missed his stupid jokes
And how he loved to be a soldier more than most

I laid in bed that night and thought about the day
And how my life is like a roller coaster ride
The ups and downs and crazy turns along the way
It'll throw you off if you don't hold on tight
You can't really smile until you've shed some tears
I could die today or I might live on for years

I love this crazy, tragic,
Sometimes almost magic,
Awful, beautful life

I love this crazy, tragic,
Sometimes almost magic,
Awful, beautful life

Alright
It's a beautiful life
Awful, beautiful, life
I love this life
It's a beautiful life

dj, you clever thing. That was it. How do you do that thing you do?

Listeners, isn't it wonderful how we can go from one genre to another here on WA2K?

From the classics; to bubble gum music; to dirges; to celestial choirs.

There's even a song about Pococatepetyl, mountain of flame.

You beat me again, dj. I'm slow on the uptake. You know, folks. All music has a commitment, and that's why we cling to the thing that lifts and dashes, and trips and lashes.

Lyric poetry was intended to be set to music, whether it be country; bop; pop; spirituals; heavy metal; disco; whatever. Wasn't it Simon and Garfunkel who set Richard Cory to music?

Here 'tis, Letty:

They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town,
With political connections to spread his wealth around.
Born into society, a banker's only child,
He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes:
Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show.
And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht!
Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch,
And they were grateful for his patronage and thanked him very much,
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read:
"Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head."

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

Ah, Lady Di. That was it!

And for those of our listeners who are not familiar with the poem:

Richard Cory

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich - yes, richer than a king -
And admirably schooled in every grace;
In fine we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

-- Edwin Arlington Robinson

The line that really is pure beauty, is "....and he glittered when he walked...."

A goodnight song:

For you WilliamHenryIII wherever you are:

Artist: Buffett, Jimmy Lyrics
Song: Stars Fell on Alabama Lyrics

Moonlight and magnolias, starlight in your hair
All the world a dream come true
Did it really happen, was I really there
Was I really there with you

We lived our little drama, we kissed in a field of white
And stars fell on Alabama that night
I can't forget the glamour, your eyes held a tender light
And stars fell on Alabama last night

Chorus:
I never planned in my imagination, a situation so heavenly
A fairy land that no one else could enter
And in the center, just you and me, dear
My heart beat like a hammer, my arms wound around you tight
And stars fell on Alabama last night

--Spoken:
"Alright, let's take it on down from Muscle Shoals through Decatur"
"Mmmm, Birmingham, ooh Montgomery"
"Right up over Spanish Fort into Mobile, my hometown"
"Mister T..."

(harmonica solo)

Chorus:
I never planned in my imagination, a situation so heavenly
A fairy land that no one else could enter
And in the center, just you and me, dear
My heart beat like a hammer, my arms wound around you tight
Ah, stars fell on Alabama last night

--Spoken:
"One more time boys..."

Yes, we lived our little drama
We kissed on the dunes so white
And stars fell on Alabama
Last night.

Just so that it's clear, that is simply ONE version of that lovely song.

I hope that I can drift off tonight.

a good night poem

Winken Blinken and Nod

Winken, Blinken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe --
Sailed off on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish
That live in the beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
Said Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,
And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew.
The little stars were the herring fish
That lived in the beautiful sea --
"Now cast your nets wherever you wish --
Never afeard are we";
So cried the stars to the fisherman three:
Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling foam --
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe
Bringing the fisherman home;
'Twas all so pretty a sail it seemed
As if it could not be,
And some folks thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed
Of sailing that beautiful sea --
But I shall name you the fishermen three:
Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

Winken and Blinken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoes that sailed the skies
Is the wee one's trundle-bed.
So shut your eyes while mother sings
Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
As you rock in the misty sea,
Where the old shoe rocked the fisherman three:
Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

Letty mentioned William Henry III. That is not the same person who was a member of A2K, is it? Not the same person who wrote a tribute to his dog? -(had me in tears.) I was thinking about him just the other day and wondering why he didn't post here anymore.

(words & music by bill strange - scott davis)
Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind
Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine

Quiet thoughts come floating down
And settle softly to the ground
Like golden autumn leaves around my feet
I touched them and they burst apart with sweet memories,
Sweet memories

Of holding hands and red bouquets
And twilight trimmed in purple haze
And laughing eyes and simple ways
And quiet nights and gentle days with you

Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind
Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine,
Memories, memories, sweet memories
