Rene Marie Russo (born February 17, 1954) is an American film actress and former fashion model.

Biography

Early life

Russo, a Sicilian/Italian American,[1][2] was born in Burbank, California, the daughter of Shirley (née Balocca), a factory worker and barmaid, and Nino Russo, a sculptor and car mechanic who left the family when Rene was two.[3][4][5] Russo grew up with her sister, Toni, and their single mother. She attended Burroughs High School (where her classmates included director Ron Howard), but eventually dropped out in the tenth grade. Due to financial constraints within the family, she began taking a variety of part-time jobs including working in an eyeglass factory, and as a movie cashier.

Career

In 1972, Russo was spotted at a Rolling Stones concert by a scout and manager John Crosby from International Creative Management. She was signed to the Ford Modeling Agency and began modeling shortly after, appearing on several magazine covers, including that of "Vogue". Russo spent the majority of the 1970s and early 1980s as a successful model, but later began to study acting, and appeared in roles at regional theaters in Los Angeles.

Russo made her television series debut in 1987, with a supporting role in the TV-series Sable. Two years later, she made her debut in film as the girlfriend of the Tom Berenger character in Major League. Her first major breakthrough role is generally considered to be her part as a martial arts-practising internal affairs detective Lorna Cole in Lethal Weapon 3 (and later again in Lethal Weapon 4). Throughout the 1990s, Russo appeared in a number of high-profile thrillers that were hugely successful at the box office, including In the Line of Fire, Outbreak, Ransom and The Thomas Crown Affair. She has starred in at least one major studio film per year from 1992 to 2002.

She recently starred in both Two for the Money and Yours, Mine and Ours.

Personal life

Russo has been married to screenwriter Dan Gilroy since 1992. They have one daughter, Rose (born August 31, 1993), and the family currently lives in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California. Her sister Toni was married to lyricist Bernie Taupin in the 1980s, and Rene appeared alongside her sister in the 1987 video for Taupin's solo song, "Citizen Jane."

Lou Diamond Phillips
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Born February 17, 1962 (1962-02-17) (age 45)
Subic Bay Naval Station, Philippines

Lou Diamond Phillips (born February 17, 1962) is an American film and television actor.

Biography

Early life

Phillips was born Lou Diamond Upchurch at the Subic Bay Naval Station in the Philippines, the son of Lucita and Gerald Upchurch, a naval officer.[1] His father was an American of Scottish-Irish, Hawaiian and Cherokee descent and his mother was a Filipina of Spanish, Chinese and Japanese descent.[2][3] Phillips was named after Marine legend Lou Diamond[4] and adopted his surname, "Phillips", from his stepfather.

Career

Phillips' big break came with the starring role in 1987's La Bamba as early rocker Ritchie Valens. Though the role garnered him praise from critics, he has since found it difficult to find another leading role in a big-budget Hollywood film. In 1988, he co-starred along Edward James Olmos in the inner-city high school drama, Stand and Deliver. He plays Angel Guzman, a wannabe cholo gangster who is inspired by his math teacher, Jaime Escalante, to challenge himself at calculus; and along the road, creates a friendship with his teacher. Stand and Deliver was actually filmed before La Bamba, but was released the year after. In 1988 and 1990, Phillips co-starred with Emilio Estevez and Kiefer Sutherland in the cowboy movies Young Guns and Young Guns II.

The first low-budget film in which he starred in was called Trespasses.

Personal life

During the making of Trespasses, he met Julie Cypher, an assistant director who would become his wife on September 17, 1986. They later divorced on August 5, 1990. Cypher would leave him to start a relationship with rocker Melissa Etheridge. He met Jennifer Tilly, to whom he was briefly engaged, although the two never married. He later married model Kelly Preston (not to be confused with John Travolta's actress wife of the same name). They had three daughters. They separated in 2005 and their divorce was finalized in August of 2007. He married Yvonne Boismier that same month, and their first child, daughter Indigo Sanara, was born in October 2007.

Phillips plays on the World Poker Tour in the Hollywood Home games. He plays for the Sierra Canyon H.S. & Santa Suzanna Montessori charity.

On Friday, August 11, 2006, Phillips was arrested for alleged domestic violence at his Los Angeles home following a dispute with his girlfriend, makeup artist Yvonne Boismier.[5] In December, he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of domestic battery, and was sentenced to three years probation. He also was ordered to undergo one year of domestic violence counseling and to serve 200 hours of community service.[6]

In an interview titled "Shine on Lou Crazy Diamond" in Smash Hits magazine, Phillips revealed that his favorite band is Pink Floyd, and that his favorite song is "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".

Activism

Phillips is an outspoken, long-time advocate[7] of HR 4574,[8] the Filipino Veterans Equity Act of 2006, legislation which would honor the service of Filipino World War II veterans by granting them the same benefits made available to other U.S. World War II veterans.

Denise Lee Richards (born February 17, 1971) is an American actress and former fashion model. She became famous in the late 1990s, after a string of films that highlighted her sex appeal, including Starship Troopers, Wild Things, and The World Is Not Enough.

Biography

Early life

Richards was born in Joliet, Illinois, the daughter of Joni, a coffee shop owner, and Irv Richards, a telephone engineer. She has one sister, Michelle, and grew up in both Mokena, Illinois and Downers Grove, Illinois. She graduated from El Camino High School in 1989, Oceanside, California, where she was a cheerleader.

Career

Before she was an actress, Richards was a fashion model. Richards spent the majority of the 1990s appearing in lower-budget films and TV shows like Saved by the Bell, television movies, and guest starring in episodes of several television shows. Her first starring role in a wide theatrical release was Starship Troopers in 1997, which was followed by her role in the moderately successful cult film Wild Things in 1998. Richards was subsequently cast as Dr. Christmas Jones in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999), which had a high box office gross and contributed to Richards' renown. In addition to her film work, Richards has made regular appearances in the situation comedies Spin City, Two and a Half Men, Friends and Seinfeld. She also starred in the short-lived UPN series Sex, Love & Secrets in 2005. Throughout the early 2000s, Richards appeared in several film roles which both parodied and utilized her image as a sex symbol, including Valentine, Undercover Brother, Scary Movie 3 and Love Actually. In December 2004, she posed for a nude pictorial in Playboy magazine. Richards also posed semi-nude for the July 2006 issue of Jane magazine to raise money for the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation. In 1999 she ranked 9 in Maxim's 50 Sexiest Women and in 2001 she was voted 2nd in FHM's USA 100 Sexiest Women, 5th in FHM 100 Sexiest Women and 19 in AskMen.com 50 Most Beautiful Women.

Personal life

Richards once dated actor Patrick Muldoon.[1] In 2002, she married actor Charlie Sheen, with whom she appeared in Scary Movie 3, in which she played his character's dying wife. The couple has two daughters: Sam J, who was born on March 9, 2004, and Lola Rose, who was born on June 1, 2005. Richards was named the Sexiest Mom of 2005 by In Touch Weekly magazine.

In March 2005, Richards first filed for divorce from Sheen.[2] The couple briefly reconciled and were seeking marriage counseling to mend their relationship. However, on January 4, 2006, Richards' representative announced that she was continuing with the divorce, and she later sought a restraining order against Sheen, citing his alleged death threats against her.[3] She has also been linked to actor John Stamos, whom she dated during her teenage years.[4]

On April 19, 2006, Richards filed formal legal papers asking for divorce from Sheen under the laws of the state of California.[5] In her 17-page court filing (not counting additional supporting evidentiary documents), Richards alleged that Sheen's behavior was increasingly erratic, making their marriage impossible, and that she feared for her safety and the safety of their two daughters: Sam J. and Lola Rose.

Richards claimed that Sheen was physically and verbally abusive and threatened to kill her or have her killed, and that despite having accidentally shot his previous fiancée, Kelly Preston, he wanted to place firearms under their coffee table to protect them. Richards claimed that Sheen had become paranoid and obsessive, citing his belief in 9/11 conspiracy theories, a belief that baby formula caused brain damage, a desire to purchase gas masks, and an "abnormal fascination" with Nicole Simpson's death.

Further, Richards alleged that Sheen visited prostitutes and was addicted to gambling, prescription drugs (which he bought over the Internet), and pornography. Richards also alleged that Sheen posted a picture of his erect penis on his online profile of a "sex-search type" website and that he frequently viewed pornography featuring "very young girls," and websites "involving gay pornography also involving very young men who also did not look like adults".[6] Based on these allegations, Richards sought and received a restraining order against Sheen.[7]

Sheen denied the allegations. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he described Richards' actions as a "smear campaign" and insisted that he was a responsible father who would "give his life for his children." He added that Richards is "the only one entirely culpable for putting these radical allegations out for public consumption... my children included."[8]

On December 1, 2007, it was announced that Richards's mother, Joni, died from cancer.

Laptop paparazzi incident

On November 8, 2006, officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were called to the River Rock Casino in Richmond, B.C., where Richards was making a movie. After seeing some photographers taking her picture (Nude) from a nearby balcony, she apparently confronted them, grabbed one of their laptop computers and threw it over the balcony. The laptop landed near two elderly women, one 91 years old on a zimmerframe and one 89 years old and in a wheelchair. The 89-year-old woman suffered minor injuries (mild bruising) and was treated by emergency personnel.[9]

Court case

On January 25, 2008, Denise Richards won a court case against Charlie Sheen so that she can include her kids in her own upcoming reality television show.[10]

Paris Whitney Hilton (born February 17, 1981) is an American celebutante. She has worked as an actress, a model and a singer, and is an heiress to the Hilton Hotels chain.

She is best-known through the television series The Simple Life. She has appeared in several minor film roles, most notably in the horror film House of Wax in 2005. In 2004 she published a tongue-in-cheek autobiography.[1] In 2006, she released her debut album Paris. Hilton's career pursuits include singing, modeling, acting, writing, and television. As a result of several legal incidents, Hilton served a widely publicized sentence in an L.A. County jail facility in 2007.

Early life and background

Born in New York City, Hilton is the oldest of four children of Richard and Kathy Hilton. She has a sister Nicky and brothers Barron and Conrad.

On the maternal side of her family, she is a niece of two child stars of the 1970s, Kim Richards and Kyle Richards. Hilton was related by marriage to Nicole Richie's godmother, Nancy Davis, when Nancy's brother, Greg, was married to Kim Richards.

Hilton's paternal grandparents are hotel chairman Barron Hilton, and his wife, the former Marilyn Hawley; Barron Hilton's parents were Hilton Hotels founder Conrad Hilton and his first wife, Mary Barron.

Hilton moved between several exclusive homes in her youth, including a suite in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, and the Hamptons. She attended Marywood-Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage, California her freshman year of high school; Dwight School in New York for her sophomore and junior years; then a few months at Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut before dropping out.[2] Hilton eventually earned a GED.[3]

In December 2007, Hilton's grandfather Barron Hilton pledged 97 percent of his estate to a charitable organisation founded by his father, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. An immediate pledge of $1.2 billion was made, with a further $1.1 billion due after his death. He cited his father's actions as the motivation for his pledge. According to reports, the potential inheritance of his grandchildren is sharply diminished.[4][5]

Career

Hilton has worked as a model, actress, musician, and businesswoman. According to Forbes Magazine, she earned approximately $2 million in 2003-2004,[6] $6.5 million in 2004-2005,[7] and $7 million in 2005-2006.[8]

As a model

Hilton began modeling as a child, initially at charity events.[9] When she was 19, she signed with Donald Trump's modeling agency, T Management.[9] Hilton has also worked with Ford Models in New York, Models 1 Agency in London, Nous Model Management in Los Angeles, and Premier Model Management in London. She has appeared in numerous advertising campaigns, including Iceberg Vodka, GUESS, Tommy Hilfiger, Christian Dior, and Marciano. In 2001, Hilton began to develop a reputation as a socialite, being identified as "New York's leading It Girl" whose fame was beginning to "extend beyond the New York tabloids".[9] She has appeared in several magazines, including the April 2004 issue of Maxim.[10] In a recent interview in Elle, Hilton exclaimed her happiness at being flat-chested and her puzzlement about women who want bigger breasts.[11]

As an actress

Hilton's co-starred with Nicole Richie, the adopted daughter of Lionel Richie, in the Fox reality series The Simple Life, which premiered on December 2, 2003. The Simple Life ran for three seasons on Fox. The show was cancelled by Fox after a dispute between Hilton and Richie, but it was subsequently aired by E! Entertainment Television for the fourth and fifth seasons,[12] with talks of a sixth season to follow.[13] Hilton has also guest-starred in episodes of The O.C., The George Lopez Show, Las Vegas, American Dreams and Veronica Mars. Furthermore, she appeared in several music videos, including "It Girl" by John Oates and "Just Lose It" by Eminem. Hilton has made cameo appearances in several films, notably Zoolander (2001), Wonderland (2003), and The Cat In The Hat (2003). She landed minor and supporting roles in the feature films Nine Lives (2002), Raising Helen (2004), The Hillz (2004), and House of Wax (2005). Her role as Paige Edwards in House of Wax won the Teen Choice Award for "Best Scream" and earned her a nomination for "Choice Breakout Performance - Female".[14] She also earned a nomination for "Best Frightened Performance" at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards. She landed her first lead roles in 2006 with the straight-to-DVD releases National Lampoon's Pledge This! and Bottom's Up. Hilton is scheduled to appear as the lead in several upcoming theatrical releases, including an as yet untitled superhero movie involving Stan Lee and a romantic comedy called The Hottie and the Nottie. Planning is underway for an eponymous cartoon series following the animated life of Hilton, her sister Nicky, and her dog Tinkerbell.[15] As of August 2007, Hilton is part of the cast of Repo! the Genetic Opera, which began filming in September 2007.[16]

As a recording artist

Hilton founded Heiress Records, a sub-label of Warner Bros. Records, in 2004 and released her self-titled debut album, Paris, under that label on August 22, 2006. Although the album reached number six on the Billboard 200 for a week, its total sales volume has been low.[17][18] All Music Guide commented that the album was "more fun than anything released by Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson, and a lot fresher, too." On the whole, critical reception was mixed.[19] On July 16, 2007 Hilton confirmed that she was working on a new album with producer Scott Storch.[20][21][22]

As an author

In the autumn of 2004, Hilton released an autobiographical book, Confessions of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek Behind the Pose, co-written by Merle Ginsberg, which includes full color photographs of her and her advice on life as an heiress. Hilton reportedly received a $100,000 advance payment for this book. Some in the media panned the writing as amateurish, and the book was parodied by Robert Mundell on The Late Show with David Letterman. The book became a New York Times bestseller. Hilton followed it up with a designer diary, also with Ginsberg, called Your Heiress Diary: Confess It All to Me.

Activism

Animal rights

In 2007, after watching a graphic video about animals raised for their fur, Hilton announced her support of vegetarianism and her opposition to wearing fur.[23] Hilton said:

" From that point [after witnessing the video shown by Heather Mills], I've never worn fur and I never will. I also haven't eaten any meat since. I just survive on pasta and stuff like that. I was grossed out. It was disgusting. "

Products and endorsements

Hilton helped design a collection of purses for Japanese label Samantha Thavasa,[24] and also a jewelry line for Amazon.com.[25] In 2004, Hilton was involved in the creation of a perfume line by Parlux Fragrances. Originally set to be a small release, high demand led to a wider release before December 2004. The launch was followed by a 47 percent increase in sales of Parlux products, predominantly due to sales of the Hilton-branded perfume.[26] After the success of Hilton's perfume, Parlux Fragrances released several more perfumes with her name, including fragrances for men.[27] Paris Hilton launched a new fragrance in October 2007, called Can Can. This is her fourth women's fragrance after Paris Hilton, Just Me, and Heiress. In January 2007, Hilton released the DreamCatchers line of hair extensions in partnership with Hair Tech International.[28] In early August 2007, Hilton signed a licensing agreement with Antebi for a signature footwear line, "Paris Hilton Footware", featuring stilettos, platforms, flats, wedges, and a sports collection, expected to reach stores in 2008.[29] In mid August 2007, Hilton launched a line of tops, dresses, coats, and jeans at Kitson boutique in Los Angeles.[30]

In 2005, Hilton lent her name to a chain of nightclubs owned by Fred Khalilian and known as Club Paris. This association ended in January 2007 after she had failed to attend several scheduled promotional appearances.[31]

In December 12, 2007, Hilton launched a champagne called Rich Prosecco, which comes in a can rather than a bottle. Hilton went to Germany to promote the drink.[32]

Personal life

Hilton was engaged to fashion model Jason Shaw from mid-2002 to early 2003, and Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis, from May 29, 2005 to November 2005. Thereafter, she began dating another Greek shipping heir, Stavros Niarchos III, before breaking up in May 2006.

Hilton told Live with Regis and Kelly: "One-night stands are not for me. I think it's gross when you just give it up. Guys want you more, if you don't just hand it to them on a platter."[33]

In January 2007, Hilton's private life created headlines with the launch of ParisExposed.com, a website that featured images of personal and medical documents, video, and other private material, allegedly obtained when the contents of a storage locker rented by Hilton were auctioned off due to lack of payment.[34] CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 discussed footage obtained from the website which features Hilton using several homophobic and ethnic slurs.[35] On February 3, 2007 Hilton obtained a temporary injunction against ParisExposed.com, closing down the website for a short period of time before it went back online.

Hilton loves small dogs, and owns a Yorkshire Terrier and a female Chihuahua named Tinkerbell. Hilton is frequently seen carrying Tinkerbell (dubbed an "accessory dog") at social events and functions, and in all five seasons of television reality show The Simple Life. In 2004, Tinkerbell "authored" a memoir, The Tinkerbell Hilton Diaries. On August 12, 2004, Tinkerbell went missing after Hilton's apartment was burglarized, and a $5,000 reward was offered for her safe return.[36] She was found six days later. By December 1, 2004, Tinkerbell was again spotted with Paris Hilton at various events. Hilton has also purchased a male Chihuahua on July 25, 2007 from Pets of Bel Air in Los Angeles.[37]

A four-year-old homemade sex video of Hilton and then-boyfriend Rick Salomon was leaked on the Internet in 2003, later released as the DVD 1 Night in Paris despite attempted legal action. It appeared a week prior to the premiere of The Simple Life.

Driving violations

In September 2006, Hilton was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content of 0.08%, the level at which it is illegal to drive in California. Hilton's driving license was subsequently suspended in November 2006,[38] and in January 2007 she pleaded no contest to the alcohol-related reckless driving charge.[39] Her punishment was 36 months' probation and fines of about $1,500.[40] On January 15, 2007, Hilton was pulled over for driving with a suspended license and signed a document acknowledging that she was not permitted to drive.[41] On February 27, 2007 Hilton was caught driving 70 mph in a 35 mph zone, again with a suspended license. She also did not have her headlights on even though it was after dark. Prosecutors in the office of the Los Angeles City Attorney charged that those actions, along with the failure to enroll in a court-ordered alcohol education program, constituted a violation of the terms of her probation.[38]

On May 4, 2007 Hilton was sentenced by Judge Michael T. Sauer to 45 days in jail for violating her probation. Initially, Hilton planned to appeal the sentence, and supported an online petition[42] asking California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a pardon.[43] The petition was created and organized on May 5, 2007 by Joshua Morales.[44] In response, various opponents started a counter-petition to maintain the sentence.[45] Both petitions attracted tens of thousands of signatures. Hilton later switched lawyers and dropped her plans to appeal.[46]

Hilton was required to begin her jail term on June 5, 2007,[47] and checked herself into the Century Regional Detention Facility, an all-female jail in Lynwood, California after attending the 2007 MTV Movie Awards on June 3, 2007. With credit for good behavior, it was anticipated that Hilton would only serve 23 days of her 45-day sentence;[48] however, in an unexpected turn of events, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca signed orders on the morning of June 7, reassigning Hilton to 40 days of home confinement with an electronic monitoring device due to an unspecified medical condition.[49] Baca commented on the release saying, "My message to those who don't like celebrities is that punishing celebrities more than the average American is not justice,"[50] contesting that under normal circumstances, Hilton would not have served any time in jail, and he added that "The special treatment, in a sense, appears to be because of her celebrity status ... She got more time in jail".[51] On the same day that Hilton was released from jail, Judge Michael Sauer summoned her to reappear in court the following morning (June 8) as the sentencing statement had explicitly said she would serve time in jail with "No work furlough. No work release. No electronic monitoring."[52] At the hearing he declined to be briefed by Hilton's attorney in private chambers on the nature of her condition and sent her back to jail to serve out her original 45-day sentence. Upon hearing the sentence, Hilton shouted, "It's not right!" and started screaming, requesting to hug her mother who was present in the courtroom.[53][54] Concern about Hilton's condition led to her being moved to the medical wing of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, and she was moved back to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood on June 13.[55]

While in jail, Hilton was influenced by prison minister Marty Angelo: Hilton referred to starting a "new beginning" during her interview with talk show host Larry King on June 28, 2007, two days after being released from jail,[56] and quoted from Angelo's autobiography, entitled Once Life Matters: A New Beginning. On June 9, 2007 Marty Angelo petitioned sentencing Sauer[57] asking to serve out the remainder of Hilton's jail sentence if the judge would release her to an alternative treatment program,[58] but the petition was turned down.

Hilton was released from jail on June 26, 2007. In total, Hilton served 22 days in detention, counting her day-long home confinement.[59] Hilton announced she would be visiting Rwanda in November 2007 as a post-jail vow, but has since postponed the trip until an undetermined date in 2008.

Controversy

Paris Hilton has been quoted as saying that she is the "iconic blonde of the decade"' and compared herself to Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe (a claim she denied in the May 2007 issue of Harper's Bazaar).[60] She will reportedly appear in the 2007 Guinness World Records as the world's "Most Overrated Celebrity".[61] In a poll conducted by the Associated Press and AOL, Hilton was voted the second "Worst Celebrity Role Model of 2006", behind Britney Spears.[62] Critics suggest that Hilton epitomizes the title of famous for being famous;[63] echoing that sentiment, the Associated Press conducted what they called an experiment in February 2007, trying not to report on Hilton for a whole week.[64]

Hilton recently posed nude, covered in gold paint, to promote "Rich Prosecco", a canned version of an Italian sparkling wine.[65][66][67]

An older lady was somewhat lonely and decided she needed a pet to
keep her company. So, off to the pet shop she went. She searched
and searched. None of the pets seemed to catch her interest,
except this ugly frog. As she walked by the jar he was in,
she looked and he winked at her.
He whispered, 'I'M SO LONELY, TOO. BUY ME AND TAKE ME HOME.
YOU WON'T EVER BE SORRY.'
The old lady figured, what the heck! She hadn't found anything else.
So, she bought the frog. She placed him in the car, on the front seat
beside her. As she was slowly driving down the road, the frog
whispered to her
'KISS ME AND YOU WON'T BE SORRY.'
So! The old lady figured, WHAT THE HECK, and kissed the frog.
IMMEDIATELY the frog turned into an absolutely gorgeous, sexy,
young, handsome prince.
THE PRINCE THEN RETURNED THE OLD LADY'S KISS.
SUDDENLY THE OLD LADY FELT HERSELF TRANSFORMING FROM HIS KISS.
NOW CAN YOU GUESS WHAT THE OLD LADY TURNED INTO?
SHE TURNED INTO THE
FIRST HOLIDAY INN SHE COULD FIND!!!
She's old....... NOT DEAD !!!!!

Wow! Raggedy, in Roman numerals that is XIV photo's. Thanks, pretty puppy for the elaborate montage. It truly is a Roman Holiday. Razz

Confession for today. When I first saw the name Paris Hilton, I thought it referred to a hotel in Paris, France.

Here's Hal doing a short clip of Mark Twain, folks

Rex, That is fabulous. What a voice you have and what a delight to hear it here on our cyber radio. The photo's behind the video were perfect. Thanks again, Maine.

Well, Rex has just inspired me to listen to John Denver, and I especially like this one, folks, because I associate it with a memory of my friend who died.

on february 17 , 1904 giaccomo puccini's MADAME BUTTERFLY was first performed at LA SCALA in milan .

this is from NPR 2004 :
Quote:
Morning Edition, February 17, 2004 · A century ago today, an abandoned young woman took the stage at La Scala in Milan, Italy, praying for her lover's return. Thus, the world was introduced to Madame Butterfly, Giacomo Puccini's most famous heroine. Her story, set in Japan around 1900, is a tragic one of innocence betrayed.

let's celebrate again !

Rex, that Jim Carey video was really funny, and although I don't particularly like him, I laughed at that impersonation. Thanks, buddy.

hbg, more fond memories as that aria from Madame Butterfly was done by my oldest sister and she accompanied herself. Interesting how an Italian coloratura would be singing about a Japanese lady and betrayal. Thanks for the opera and I think swimpy is beginning to value it as well.

This jazz delight is for my friend, Bill, who sang it so sweetly. I can picture him at the mike during a jam session at our local supper club. Unfortunately, the piano player was doing it in three four time and I can recall Bill trying to get back on track. All he could say was, "when...when..when". I ran over to the piano and told the piano man that it was four four time and all became better. (smiling now)

First the lyrics, then the jazz piano.

When Sunny gets blue, her eyes get gray and cloudy,
Then the rain begins to fall.
Pitter-patter, pitter-patter, love is gone so what can matter?
No sweet lovin' man comes to call.

When Sunny gets blue she breathes a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees,
Wind that sets the leaves to swayin' like some violins are playin'
Weird and haunting melodies.

(Bridge:)
People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile -
That's how she got her name.
Since that sad affair she's lost her smile, changed her style -
Somehow she's not the same.

But mem'ries will fade and pretty dreams will rise up
Where her other dreams fell through;
Hurry, new love, hurry here to kiss away each lonely tear,
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue.

(Coda:)
Hurry, new love, hurry here to kiss away each lonely tear,
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

that's about as funny as seeing victor borge trying to conduct an orchestra . we saw something similar to the youtube flick some 20 years ago - VB was trying to conduct but the musicians didn't pay any attention to him - they played want they wanted to play not hat VB was trying to conduct
seeing the smiling faces of the musicians is the best part imo

Well, folks, our edgar is back with two songs. Thanks, Texas, for the Paul tune, and we all enjoy Tony.

hbg, Victor Borge is one of my all time favorites. What a musician, and what a comedian. Yes, the smile on the faces of the orchestra shows their appreciation of his ability. Loved how the first chair violinist got up, walked off and shot the violin. Razz

Time for a station break, folks, but I shall be back later.

This is cyber space, WA2K radio.

Can't get Ode to joy out of my mind, y'all.

It's Sunday and time to feel that joy.

Joyful joyful we adore thee
God of glory, Lord of love;
hearts unfold like flowers before thee,
opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
drive the dark of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness,
fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee,
earth and heaven reflect thy rays,
stars and angels sing around thee,
center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
flowery meadow, flashing sea,
chanting bird and flowing fountain,
call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving,
ever blessing, ever blest,
well-spring of the joy of living,
ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our brother,
all who live in love are thine;
teach us how to love each other,
lift us to the joy divine.
Mortals, join the mighty chorus
which the morning stars began;
love divine is reigning o'er us,
binding all within its span.
Ever singing, march we onward,
victors in the midst of strife;
joyful music leads us sunward,
in the triumph song of life.
