Letty,
Didn't grow up with the "Cajun Music", as you call it. I grew up with "DixieLand Jazz". I am a Creole, from one of New Orleans' "old" people of Color, familles, Le Gens de Coleur Libre, Free People of Color. I am neither Black, nor White, in the truest sense, but a "melange" of all of them. I've "labeled" myself, African-American and Black, because in the South, they still adhere to the "one drop" rule, or the "code noir", Black Codes. All of these "rules", were to keep Blacks and free people of color, "in line", until many left, crossed over the color lines, for economical reasons, denial, etc. I was often asked, what was I, by well meaning whites and Blacks here, in the East. Too light to be considered Black and too dark, imho, to be anything else. Thus, is the history of race in America. I am a retired AT&T employee, who worked with every nation in the world. When others learned of my race, it shattered the "sterotype" of what a "black" person, is thought of. I was educated in private schools, all my life and had no conception of the desperate poverty, many Blacks were and are in.

I realize now, as I age, how fortunate, I and my siblings were. It's incumbent on me, to "give back" and do all I can to educate and enlighten all people, how race can label you, for life. I am one of many, who grew up, as I did, in a "priviledged" environment, borne of upwardly bound parents, looking for a "better" life for me and my sisters. There were 4 of us, all dressed like Madeleine, the little French Girl, whose books I collect, surrounded in a very religious, environment. Mass, every day and the sacraments, for those familiar, with Catholicism. I have been called the "racial slurs" and never really understood racial hatred. I'm happy to say that in everything, a lesson is learned. As a christian, we are taught to be humble unto God and have compassion, for others. I've taught my own children, the same things. My son winters in Orlando and is often told by hispanics, to learn Spanish, assuming, he is, also! Not going to tell you what his reply was, but it had a lot to do with thinking he lived in America, so THEY should speak English!

Anyway, music, has been a very large influence, on me. I began singing, when I was a toddler and had such a strong voice, until, I was formally trained in German, until I entered high school, sang opera in school plays and sung popular music, professionally, until I married and had children. All of my kids sing and think it's perfectly normal, that they can carry a tune! One of our priests, had a monotone voice and the kids would giggle to no end, when he'd sing, at Mass. Not just the kids were snickering! I would cover my mouth with a hankie to stifle a guffaw!

Anyway, I love coming here and reading the lyrics to songs, I'm unfamiliar with and search song sites to see if I can hear the tune! I love all kinds of music, from Beethoven to the Beatles! Folk songs, country, Jazz, you name it! Music soothes the savage beast! Love you, Letty!

For you from The Red Stick. <smile>The English translation is quite poor, I'm afraid.

Jolie blonde, regardez donc quoi t'as fait,
Tu m'as quitte pour t'en aller,
Pour T'en aller avec un autre, oui, que moi,
Quel espoir et quel avenir, mais, moi, je vais avoir?

Jolie blonde, tu m'as laisse, moi tout seul,
Pour t'en aller chez ta famille.
Si t'aurais pas ecoute tos les conseils de les autres
tu serait ici-t-avec moi aujourd 'hui

Jolie blonde, tu croyais il y avait just toi,
Il y a pas just toi dans le pays pour moi aimer.
Je peux trouver just une autre jolie blonde,
Bon Dieu sait, moi, j'ai un tas.

In English
Pretty blond, look at what you've done,
You left me to go away,
to go away with another, yes, than me,
What hope and what future am I going to have?

Pretty blond, you've left me all alone
To go back to your family.
If you had not listened to all the advice of the others
You would be here with me today.

Pretty blond, you thought there as just you,
There is not just you in the land to love me.
I can find another pretty blond,
Good God knows, I have a lot.

The Cajun musician Harry Choates was responsible for making the song as popular as it is today.

Hank Williams also does a song from The French Quarter, and I shall find it later.

Well, all right, Sharon. Love Dixieland jazz.

So, folks, for Sharon, here's Louis. (my husband always claimed it took a fat man to play trumpet)

Way down yonder in new orleans
In the land of the dreamy scenes
There's a garden of eden...you know what I mean

Creole babies with flashin' eyes
Softly whisper their tender sighs
Then stop....won't you give your lady fair...a little smile
Stop..ya bet your life you'll linger there...a little while

We've got heaven right here on earth
With those beautiful queens
Way down yonder in new...orleans

(instrumental break)

You're gonna find heaven right here on earth
With all them beautiful queens
Way down yonder in new or.....

I'm goin' down yonder to new orleans

It's way down yonder in new orleans

Dixieland Music
Tap dancing, Letty! I learned a cute routine to this, when I was about 8 or 9 years old! Love that song! I also love, " Do You Know what It Means, To Miss New Orleans"? I cry now, when I hear it, after Katrina! You've made my day! You're no native of N.O, if you don't know this one!

Walter loves dixieland, too, Sharon, but just be glad that you were NOT there when Katrina blew her horn, honey.

I used to tap dance as well.

So, for Walter and Sharon, folks.

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
And miss it each night and day
I know I'm not wrong, the feeling's getting stronger
The longer I stay away

Miss the moss-covered vines, tall sugar pines
Where mockingbirds used to sing
I'd love to see that old lazy Mississippi
Hurrying into Spring

The moonlight on the bayou
A Creole tune that fills the air
I dream about magnolias in bloom
And I'm wishin I was there

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
When that's where you left your heart
And there's one thing more, I miss the one I care for
More than I miss New Orleans

Back later with Basin Street.

Funny, My home is decorated with everything New Orleans. I decorate my Christmas tree with red/white/blue/, with my "Fleur de Lis", sprinkled in, St. Louis Cathedral, Beignets and I have a Dixieland Band, that plays in the town square, that I set up every year, like a tableux, complete with lamposts, replicas, of those in the French Quarter.

I have a great family, who send me pralines, red beans and coffee, for Christmas. This year, I ordered "Mr. Bingle" ornaments, taken from the beautiful windows, that used to decorate Maison Blanche, on Canal St., when I was so little and impressionable. I was even sent, "Looking For Mr. Bingle", a New Orleans Fairy tale! 5th Ave. in New York, can't compare to the beautifully decorated department store windows, there! The lighting of the bonfires, on Christmas eve, to light the way, for the Baby Jesus to see, on His birthday, are all memories, I have. Thanks for the memories! Now, I'm homesick!

Well, Sharon, come along with me in your mind.

Won't you come along with me
Down the Mississippi
We'll take trip to the land of dreams
Floatin' down the river down to New Orleans

And the band'll be there to meet us
Old friends to greet us
That's where the light and the dark folks meet
A heaven on earth - they call it Basin Street

Basin street is the street
Where the elite always meet
Out in New Orleans, the land of dreams
You'll never know how nice it seems
Or just how much it really means
And I'd rather be, yes-sir-ee
New Orleans the land of dreams
Where I can lose my Basin Street blues

Now ain't you glad you came with me
We went down the Mississippi
We took a trip
To the land of dreams
We floated down the river
Down to New Orleans

Basin street - that's the street
Where the elite always meet
Down in New Orleans, the land of dreams
And you'll never know how nice it seems
Or just how much it really means
I'd rather be, yes-sir-ee
New Orleans the land of dreams
Where I can lose my Basin Street blues

That version by Willie Nelson

Good afternoon WA2.

Sorry to leave the South, folks, but it's Petula Clark's 75th birthday today, and she says:

When you're alone
And life is making you lonely,
You can always go downtown
When you've got worries,
All the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know, downtown

Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?

The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares and go
Downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown, no finer place for sure,
Downtown, everything's waiting for you
(Downtown)

Don't hang around
And let your problems surround you
There are movie shows downtown
Maybe you know
Some little places to go to
Where they never close downtown

Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossanova
You'll be dancing with 'em too before the night is over
Happy again

The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares and go
Downtown where all the lights are bright,
Downtown, waiting for you tonight,
Downtown, you're gonna be alright now
(Downtown, downtown)

Downtown
(Downtown)

And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you,
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
Guide them along

So, maybe I'll see you there
We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares and go
Downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown, don't wait a minute more,
Downtown, everything's waiting for you

Downtown (downtown) downtown (downtown)
Downtown (downtown) downtown (downtown)
(repeat and fade out)

Hey, Raggedy, I gave you an early Christmas present on Squinney's A2K shopping thread. How marvelous that turned out to be, all.

Thanks again for the great collage, PA, and I think we know them all.(love Sam Waterston)

I, however, had to do some research on Yaphet Kotto, and what a surprise to find out about the man. More later about him, folks.

Here's another chanson by Pet.

DON'T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY
Petula Clark

You wander around on your own little cloud
when you don't see the why, or the where for.
You walk out on me when we both disagree,
'cause to reason is not what you care for.

I've heard it all a million time before.
Take off your coat, my love, and close the door.

Don't sleep in the subway, darling.
Don't stand in the pouring rain.
Don't sleep in the subway, darling.
The night is lonely. Forget your foolish pride.
Nothing's wrong. Now you're beside me again.

You try to be smart, then you take it apart,
'cause it hurts when your ego is deflated.
You don't realize that it's all compromise,
and the problems are so overrated.

Goodbye means nothing when it's all for show.
So why pretend you've somewhere else to go.

Don't sleep in the subway, darling.
Don't stand in the pouring rain.
Don't sleep in the subway, darling.
The night is lonely. Forget your foolish pride.
Nothing's wrong. Now you're beside me again.

Ah, dear Raggedy, I just saw my crown. Loved it, PA.and thank you.

speaking of crowns, folks. I just noticed something interesting. Yaphet Kotto was a star in the Thomas Crown Affair.

so, one of my favorite songs

Sting and the Police
The Windmills of Your Mind

Round,
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Spinning silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half-forgotten dream
Like the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Spinning silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly?
Was it something that I said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
Or the fragment of a song
Half-remembered names and faces
but to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the colour of her hair?
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Ain't gonna work in the country
And neither on Forester's farm
I'm gonna stay 'till my Marybell come
She gone call me Tom
I'm gonna ask you a question
Captain tell me no lie
Will I stand this rotten old jail
Till the day I die

Diamond Joe come-a getta me, Diamond Joe

I'm tired eating this cornbread
And can't even wash when it rain
I could get me some meat and soap
If I could lose my chain

Diamond Joe come-a getta me, Diamond Joe

Last night I heard the bloodhounds
Two of the men done escape
One was framed for murder
And the other framed for rape

Diamond Joe will they catch 'em, Diamond Joe

Now I bust rock in the summer,
In the spring winter and fall
If I have me some powder
Great God I'd blast me a hole in the wall
Diamond Joe, come-a getta me Diamond Joe

Tol' my captain my hands was cold
Said damn your hands boy, let the wheeling roll

I asked my captain to give me time
Damned old captain wouldn't pay me no mind

I raised my hand to wipe the sweat off my head
Captain got mad, Lord shot my buddy dead

He kept on walkin' up and down
Buddy laying there dead, Lord
On the burning ground

If I'd a had my weight and line
I'd a whipped that captain
Till he went stone blind

If you don't believe my buddy is dead
Just look at that hole in my buddy's head

The buzzard's circlin' round the sky
Know that captain sure is bound to die
Sure is bound to die.

There's a diamond Joe, edgar, and a salty dog, so this continues with both of your songs.

The Man in Black

Standing on the corner with the lowdown blues
A great big hole in the bottom of my shoes
Honey let me be your salty dog

Let me be your salty dog
Or I won't be your little man at all
Honey let me be your salty dog

Look it here Sal, I know you
Run down stocking and a wore out shoe
Honey let me be your salty dog

Let me be your salty dog
Or I won't be your little man at all
Honey let me be your salty dog

Down in the wildwood sitting on a log
Finger on the trigger and an eye on the hog
Honey let me be your salty dog

Let me be your salty dog
Or I won't be your little man at all
Honey let me be your salty dog

Well I Pulled the trigger and the gun set go
The shot gun over in Mexico
Honey let me be your salty dog

Let me be your salty dog
Or I won't be your little man at all
Honey let me be your salty dog

Salty down now

Let me be your salty dog
Or I won't be your little man at all
Honey let me be your salty dog

Let me be your salty dog
Or I won't be your little man at all
Honey let me be your salty dog

TTH, this was a surprise to me about Yaphet

Yaphet Kotto is a devout, practicing Jew. He has been married three times. He has five children. He married Tessie Sinahon in July 1998, and they currently live in Baltimore, Maryland. His son Fredrick Kotto is a police officer with the City of San Jose, California. Yaphet Kotto has at least one grandchild by his son Robert.
Kotto claims to have uncovered proof that he is the great-great-great-grandson of Britain's Queen Victoria. According to Kotto, the Queen's son Prince Albert Edward (later King Edward VII) had an illicit affair with Princess Nakande, daughter of King Doualla Manga Bell, producing the light-skinned Alexander Bell, Kotto's great-grandfather. Queen Elizabeth's deputy press secretary denied the story, saying "Edward VII never visited Cameroon"
Kotto has a Bay Area screamo band named after him. He campaigned for Steve Forbes's bid for the Republican Presidential nomination in the 2000 primaries.

good evening listeners !
and here is another SALTY DOG SONG !

http://www.tradamis.co.uk/trhpip2.jpg

Quote:
Come loose every sail to the breeze.
The course of my vessel improve;
I've done with the toils of the seas,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love.
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
I've done with the toils of the seas,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love.

Since Emma is true as she's fair,
My griefs I fling all to the wind,
'Tis a pleasing return for my care,
My mistress is constant and kind.
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
I've done with the toils of the seas,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love.

My sails are all filled to my dear,
What tropic bird swifter can move?
Who, cruel, shall hold his career,
That returns to the nest of his love?
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
I've done with the toils of the seas,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love.

Then hoist every sail to the breeze,
Come, shipmates, and join in the song;
Let's drink while the ship cuts the seas,
To the gale that may drive her along.
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love,
I've done with the toils of the seas,
Ye sailors, I'm bound to my love.

Ah, hbg, I can hear the sea and the wind and almost taste the salt. Thanks, Canada.

My goodnight song, y'all.

There's a port, on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors, pass the time away
And talk about their homes

And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whiskey and wine

The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"

Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loves

He came on a summer's day
Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home

The sailor said " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"

Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean foam rise
She saw its ragin' glory
But he had always told the truth, lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand

At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say

She hears him say " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"

She hears him say " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"

Goodnight, sea lovers

Good morning, WA2K radio audience.

Speaking of the sea, look what was found on the beach in Wales.

http://a.abcnews.com/images/US/e85a0fdc-f19f-4048-a4f9-0914a50fe24f_ms.jpeg

That's a U.S. WWII fighter plane called a P-38. How about a song by Jefferson Airplane then.

Would you like to know a secret just between you and me
I don't know where I'm going next, I don't know who I'm gonna be
But that's the other side of this life I've been leading
That's the other side of this life.

Well my whole world's in an uproar, my whole world's upside down
I don"t know where I'm going next, but I'm always bumming around
And that's another side to this life I've been leading
And that's another side to this life

Well I don't know what doing for half the time, I don't know where I'm going
I think I'll get me a sailing boat and sail the Gulf of Mexico
But that's another side of this life I've been leading
And that's another side of this life

Well I think I'll go to Nashville down in Tennesse
The ten cent life I've been leading here gonna be the death of me
But that's the other side of this life I've been leading
And that's another side to this life

Would you like to know a secret just between you and me
I don't know where I'm going next, I don't know who I'm gonna be
But that's the other side of this life I've been leading
But that's the other side of this life.

and am wishing a Happy 40th to Lisa Bonet and Happy 26th to Allison Crowe (although after hearing Wuthering Heights, I'm not so sure I want to. Laughing )
