Thank you for my favorite Hawaiian song, Letty.
Your hibiscus is lovely.

I wanted to dedicate "Flowers of Paradise" (recorded by Alfred Apaka), to you, but it must be copywrighted. Laughing

But Alfred Apaka sings this one for you:

White ginger blossoms
Cool and fragrant
Sweeter than the rose
Fairer too than moonlight

White ginger blossoms
From the mountains
Fill the thirsty air
With exotic fragrance rare

Round your lovely throat
You wear my ginger lei
Each white petal nestles close
And longs to say
'let me stay here'

White ginger blossoms
Cool and fragrant
By a mountain pool
Guard their sweetness all for you

(Not quite as charming as when Mr. Apaka sings it, but the thought is there. )

I, too, liked Keanu in "The Devil's Advocate".

Ah, Raggedy. Thanks, honey. I love having stuff dedicated to me. Love that song and when I look at Alfred's picture, I'll tell you if I want to stay or no. Razz

Interesting factoid about the word, "Inuit", folks:

The English word Eskimo is of uncertain origin, but most likely originates from an Algonquian language. Many Inuits consider Eskimo to be pejorative because it originated with non-Inuit and is widely believed to mean "eater of raw meat." However, linguists now believe the term is derived from an Ojibwa word meaning "to net snowshoes."[2]

The term Eskimo is considered pejorative in Canada, where the preferred term is Inuit, which means "people" or "the people" in most Inuit languages. In the "Eastern Arctic" of Canada, the language is often called Inuktitut and in the "Western Arctic" it is called Inuvialuktun, though other local designations may be used for both. The Inuit of Greenland refer to themselves as Greenlanders or, in their own language, Kalaallit, and to their language as Greenlandic or Kalaallisut

Love what we learn here.

Sing along with Lilo and Stitch

Here are the lyrics to two of the songs heard in Disney's movie "Lilo & Stitch."

'Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride'

Aloha e, aloha e,
Aloha e, aloha e,
'Ano 'ai ke aloha e
'Ano 'ai ke aloha e (repeat all).

Verse 1

There's no place I'd rather be
Than on my surfboard out at sea
Lingering in the ocean blue
And if I had one wish come true
I'd surf 'til the sun sets beyond the horizon
Awikiwiki, mai lohilohi
Lawe mai i ko papa he'e nalu
Flying by on a Hawaiian roller coaster ride.

Chant Chorus I

Awikiwiki, mai lohilohi
Lawe mai i ko papa he'e nalu
Pi'i na nalu, la lahalaha
O ka moana, hanupanupa
Lalala i ka la hanahana
Me ke kai hoene i ka pu'e one
Helehele mai kakou e
Hawaiian roller coaster ride.

Verse 2

There's no place I'd rather be
Than on the seashore dry, wet free
On golden sand is where I'd lay
And if I only had my way
I'd play 'til the sun sets beyond the horizon
Lalala i ka la hanahana
Me ke kai hoene i ka pu'e one
It's time to try the Hawaiian roller coaster ride.

Chant Chorus 2

Hang loose, hang ten, howzit, shake a shaka
No worry, no fear, ain't no biggie braddah
Cuttin' in, cuttin' up, cuttin' back, cuttin' out
Frontside, backside, goofy footed, wipe out
Let's get jumpin', surf's up and pumpin'
Coastin' with the motion of the ocean
Whirlpools swirling, cascading, twirling
Hawaiian roller coaster ride.

Verse 3

There's no place I'd rather be
Than on my surfboard out at sea
Lingering in the ocean blue
And if I had one wish come true
I'd surf 'til the sun sets beyond the horizon
Awikiwiki, mai lohilohi
Lawe mai i ko papa he'e nalu
Flying by on a Hawaiian roller coaster ride.

Chant Chorus 3

Awikiwiki, mai lohilohi
Lawe mai i ko papa he'e nalu
Pi'i na nalu, la lahalaha
O ka moana, hanupanupa

Quote:
I'm gonna live the life I sing about in my song
I'm gonna stand for right and I always shun the wrong
If I'm in the crowd, If I'm alone
On the streets or in my home
I'm gonna live the life I sing about in my song

Everyday, everywhere
On a busy thoroughfare
Folks may watch me; some may spot me
Say I'm foolish
But I don't care
I can't sing one thing and then live another
Be saint by day and a devil undercover
I've got to live the life I sing about in my song

If at day, if at night
I must always walk in the light
Some mistake me; underrate me
Because I want to do aright
I can't go to church and shout all day Sunday
Go out and get drunk and raise sand all day Monday
I've got to live the life, I sing about in my song

Hey, hbg. I think it was the Newport Jazz Festival where I heard that band do Cherokee. I'll have to check that out, buddy. Good for you, Mahalia, and that's the way it should be.

Love this guy, folks.

http://www.puremusic.com/assets22/bw2.jpg

And this song by him.

Just the Two of Us
Bill Withers

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And see the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you some time
And I want to spend some time with you

Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I

We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted waters's all that is
And it don't make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not to those who wait to late
We got to go for all we know

I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
Darling, when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I want to be the one with you

This song is dedicated to Reyn and Viv. (altered the lyrics somewhat)

The good days and bad
days pass us by
I know you'll make it through
tonight-
Take a step back
and look around
you're never
alone-
( I was never alone )

So don't worry
We'll always be here
please don't cry
you will be fine
you'll be fine

I knew you were always there
and now we're here for you-
I will wish on a
shooting star
to see you smile right now-

So don't worry
( I was never alone )
We'll always be here
please don't cry

you will be fine
you'll be fine

and I promise you
that we'll be here
forever
and you will never
be alone again
never again-

Right now, listeners, they could use your support.

Absolutely, hbg.

Regardless of one's religion or faith, it is Sunday, and this hymn done by Van Morrison is appropriate.

Be Thou my vision, oh Lord of my heart
Nought be all else to me, save that Thy art
Thou my best thought in the day and the night
Waking or sleeping, Thou presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom, be Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Be Thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight
Be Thou my armour and be Thou my might
Thou my soul shelter, and Thy my high tower
Raise Thou me heavenwards, oh power of my power

Riches I need not, nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance through all of my days
Thou and Thou only though first in my heart
High king of heaven my treasure Thou art

Oh high king of heaven, when battle is done
Grant heaven's joy to me, bright heaven sun
Christ of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, though ruler of all

been listening to ella fitzgerald sing the cole porter song book

lovely

(I'm) Always True To You in My Fashion
Ella Fitzgerald

If a custom tailored vet
Asks me out for something wet
When the vet begins to pet--I cry Hooray.

But I'm always true to you, darlin', in my fashion
Yes, I'm always true to you, darlin', in my way.

I've been asked to have a meal
By a big tycoon in steel,
If the meal includes a deal, accept I may.

But I'm always true to you, darlin', in my fashion
Yes, I'm always true to you, darlin', in my way.

There's an oil man known as Tex
Who is keen to give me checks.
And his checks, I fear, means that Tex is here to stay.

But I'm always true to you, darlin', in my fashion
Yes, I'm always true to you, darlin', in my way.

From Ohio Mister Thorn
Calls me up from night till morn
Mister Thorn once cornered corn and that ain't hay

But I'm always true to you, darlin', in my fashion
Yes, I'm always true to you, darlin', in my way.

From Milwaukee Mister Fritz
Often dines me at the Ritz
Mister Fritz invented schlitz and schlitz must pay

But I'm always true to you, darlin', in my fashion
Yes, I'm always true to you, darlin', in my way.

Mister Harris, plutocrat, wants to give my cheek a pat
If the Harris pat means a Paris hat, pay, pay!

But I'm always true to you, darlin', in my fashion
Yes, I'm always true to you, darlin', in my way.

here's a smooth GERSHWIN tune in a mellow mood :

NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT !

http://www.theartsweb.com/images/artspotlight/Pierre_Matisse/George%20Gershwin.jpg

Quote:
The man who only live for making money
Lives a life that isn't necessarily sunny;
Likewise the man who works for fame --
There's no guarantee that time won't erase his name
The fact is
The only work that really brings enjoyment
Is the kind that is for girl and boy meant.
Fall in love -- you won't regret it.
That's the best work of all -- if you can get it.
Holding hands at midnight
'Neath a starry sky...

Oh that is nice work if you can get it.
And you can get it -- if you try.
Strolling with the one girl
Sighing sigh after sigh...
Oh nice work if you can get it.
And you can get it -- if you try.

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door.
Where two hearts become one...
Who could ask for anything more?

Loving one who loves you,
And then taking that vow...
Nice work if you can get it,
And if you get it --

Won't you tell me how?

And you can get it -- if you try.
And you can get it -- if you try.
And you can get it -- if you try.
And you can get it -- if you try

Holding hands at midnight
'Neath a starry sky...
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it -- if you try.
Strolling with the one girl
Sighing sigh after sigh...
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it -- if you try
Who could ask for anything more?

Love that one by Miss Ella, dj.

This one was originally by the first lady of jazz, but this version is done by Bobby Darin, and I dedicate it to my long, lost friend, Dan.

I never cared much for moonlit skies
I never wink back at fireflies
But now that the stars are in you eyes
I'm beginning to see the light

I never went in for afterglow
Or candlelight on the mistletoe
But now when you turn the lamp down low
I'm beginning to see the light

Used to ramble through the park
Shadow boxing in the dark
Then you came and caused a spark
that's a four-alarm fire now

I never made love by lantern shine
I never saw rainbows in my wine
But now that your lips are burning mine
I'm beginning to see the light

http://www.webweaver.nu/clipart/img/nature/insects/firefly.gif

I have company, so that firefly will be my goodnight song, all.

From Letty with love

Alan Ladd
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Born September 3, 1913(1913-09-03)
Hot Springs, Arkansas, U.S.
Died January 29, 1964 (aged 50)
Palm Springs, California, U.S.
Spouse(s) Marjorie Jane Harrold
(1936-1941) (divorced)
Sue Carol (1942-1964) (his death)

Alan Walbridge Ladd (September 3, 1913 - January 29, 1964) was an American film actor. He was famous for his emotionless demeanor and small stature (reports of his height vary from 5'2" to 5'5", with 5'5" being the most generally accepted today). In the majority of his films, he played either the hero or a bad guy with a conscience.

Life and career

Ladd was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas to English immigrant parents.

After first becoming a star with his performance as a hitman with a conscience in This Gun for Hire (1942), he became most famous for his starring role as a gunfighter in the classic 1953 western Shane. Ladd also made Quigley's Top 10 Stars of the Year List 3 times, 1947, 1953 and 1954. In 1954 he starred alongside Peter Cushing and Patrick Troughton in the British film The Black Knight, unusually cast as a medieval swashbuckling hero, and surrounded by veterans of British films. Unfortunately, this film was being made just as Shane was becoming a gigantic critical and commercial hit, and Ladd missed out on the public events surrounding his most popular success.

He was sometimes listed as Allan Ladd in credits.

Ladd also worked in radio, most notably the syndicated series Box 13. This series ran from 1948 to 1949 and was produced by Ladd's own company, Mayfair Productions.

Alan Ladd was married to his agent and former silent film actress Sue Carol, who was also his manager. Actress Jordan Ladd is his granddaughter. His son Alan Ladd, Jr. by first wife Midge Harrold became a motion picture executive and producer founding The Ladd Company. Another son, David Ladd, married Charlie's Angels star Cheryl Ladd.

He died in Palm Springs, California of an acute overdose of alcohol and sedatives at the age of 50, a probable suicide. On his death in 1964, Ladd was entombed in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

Irene Papas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Birth name Irene Lelekou
Born September 3, 1926 (1926-09-03) (age 80)
Chilimodion, Corynth, Greece
Spouse(s) Alkis Papas (1943-1947)

Irene Papas (Greek Ειρήνη Παππά; born September 3, 1926[1] or September 3, 1929[2]) is a Greek actress and occasional singer, who has starred in over seventy films in a career spanning more than fifty years.

Irene Papas was born Irene Lelekou (Ειρήνη Λελέκου) in Chiliomodi outside Corinth, Greece. She began her early career in Greece, achieving widespread fame there, before starring in internationally renowned films such as The Guns of Navarone and Zorba the Greek, and critically acclaimed films such as Z and Electra. She is a leading figure in cinematic transcriptions of ancient tragedy since she has portrayed Helen in The Trojan Women, Clytemnestra in Iphigenia (film), and the homonymous parts in Electra and Antigone. In 1977, she starred in the film Mohammad, Messenger of God (also known as The Message) about the origin of Islam, and the message of prophet Mohammad.

She has recently appeared in the film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and is currently working in theatre in Portugal.

Trivia
She was discovered by Elia Kazan.

Federico Fellini was a huge admirer of her work.
She was a close friend of Katharine Hepburn, with whom she co-starred in The Trojan Women. Hepburn once said that Papas was "one of the best actresses in the history of cinema".
In an interview, after the death of Marlon Brando, Papas said that she had an affair with the American actor in the past and that they remained "close friends" until the end.
One of the more unusual moments in Papas' career came in 1970, when she guested on the album 666 by Greek rock group Aphrodite's Child on the track "∞" (infinity). She chants "I was, I am, I am to come" repeatedly and wildly over a percussive backing. The track was considered lewd by record company executives, and resulted in the album being withheld from release for two years by Polydor Records. Upon its release in 1972, the song caused some furor in Greece and was again accused of lewdness and indecency by Greek religious figures and government authorities.
In 1979 released an album entitled "Odes", (Polydor CD 833 864-2) with music performed (and partly composed) by Vangelis Papathanassiou (Vangelis). The words for the album were co-written by Arianna Stassinopoulos (Arianna Huffington). In 1986 Papas released a further album in collaboration with Vangelis, entitled "Rhapsodies" (Polydor CD 829 413-2). Vangelis was also the keyboardist with Aphrodite's Child on the album "666".
She sits on the board of directors of the Anna-Marie Foundation along with members of Greece's deposed royal family.[1]

Quotations

"Falling in love is like death... they are both facts".
"Melina Mercouri was a star. I am a struggling idealist".
"I never wanted to play sensational parts, or those of desirable women. I wanted to play me... the independent fighter...".
"I never won an Oscar... and the Oscars never won Irene Papas".

Eileen Brennan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Birth name Verla Eileen Regina Brennen
Born September 3, 1932 (1932-09-03) (age 74)
Los Angeles, California

Years active 1960 - present
[show]Awards
Golden Globe Awards
Best Actress in a Television Comedy or Musical
1982 Private Benjamin

Verla Eileen Regina Brennen (born September 3, 1932 in Los Angeles, California) is an American character actress of films, television, and theater.

Brennan was born to an Irish American Catholic family; she is the daughter of silent actress Jean Manahan.

Although it is not certain as to when she began her acting career, it is known that her beautiful soprano voice enabled her to play the title character in the off-Broadway musical/operetta Little Mary Sunshine (1959) as well as the role of Irene Malloy in the original Broadway performance of Hello, Dolly! (1964). Her feature film debut was in Divorce American Style (1967).

She soon became one of the most recognizable (if unnamable) supporting actresses. Her roles were usually sympathetic characters, though she has managed to play a variety of other character types, including earthy, vulgar, and sassy. One year after her feature film debut, she became a semi-regular on the comedy-variety show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, where she stayed for only two months.

Ms. Brennan received excellent reviews for her role as "Billie" in George Roy Hill's, The Sting in 1973, as Henry Gondorf's confidante.

Although her name was not often recognized by the general public, she had become a favorite of many directors, including Peter Bogdanovich. She appeared in Bogdanovich's 1971 classic, "The Last Picture Show" (for which she received a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actress). Bogdanovich was the only director who made use of her musical talents (before, she sang in performances off Broadway) when he cast her as Cybill Shepherd's crude, fun-loving maid in his musical flop At Long Last Love (1975).

She also proved to be somewhat of a favorite of director Robert Moore and writer Neil Simon, when she starred in Murder by Death (1976) and The Cheap Detective (1978).

In 1980, she received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role as Goldie Hawn's nasty commanding officer in Private Benjamin; she reprised the role in the television adaptation (1981-1983), for which she won an Emmy (supporting actress) as well as a Golden Globe (lead actress). In addition, she has one Golden Globe nomination and six Emmy nominations. While she has been cast in a number of similar "cranky" parts, her role in White Palace (1990) (as Susan Sarandon's older sister) showed her more sympathetic side.

In 1984, Brennan and Hawn had dinner at a restaurant and afterward each woman walked to her car. Brennan was then hit by a passing car and was seriously injured. She took three years off work to recover. During this time, her performance as Mrs. Peacock in Clue (1985) reached theaters. In 1990 she appeared in Stella with Bette Midler.

From 1968 to 1974 she was married to David John Lampson, with whom she has two sons: Patrick (formerly a basketball player, now an actor featuring in NBC's "The Black Donnellys") and Sam (a singer). In addition, Brennan is a breast cancer survivor. In recent years, she has guest starred in television series, including recurring roles as the nosey Mrs. Bink in 7th Heaven, and as the gruff acting coach Zandra in Will & Grace.

Good morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

First, I would like to thank our hbg for that wonderful Gershwin song. He did it all, right?

I think most of us here remember Alan Ladd in Shane, and I think his last movie may have been The Carpetbaggers in which he played Nevada Smith. Sad that the man died so early, but Hollywood can be cruel to actors.

I recall having read "My Brother Michael"(think that's the name) and immediately wanted to go to Greece. That's the way books are, folks, and Emily was right. "A trip takes the body, but a book takes the soul."

Well, hawkman, once again we appreciate your bio's, buddy and the "groaners" gave us an early morning smile.

Hope our Ellinas is all right as the fires in Greece are rather disconcerting.

I recall having asked him about the song Boy on a Dolphin, and I am pleased to have found it.

A Boy on A Dolphin (Paul Francis Webster/Hugo Friedhofer/Takis Morakis)

There's a tale that they tell of a dolphin
And a boy made of gold.
With the shell of the pearls in the deep
He has lain many years fast asleep.
What they tell of the Boy on A Dolphin
Who can say if it's true.
Should he rise from the depths of the ocean
And wish that you wish will come true.

You say he is only a statue
And what can a statue achieve.
And yet while I'm gazing at you
My heart tells my head to believe.
If the boy whom the God have enchanted
Should arise from the sea
And the wish of my heart could be granted
I would wish that you loved only me.

Hope our Raggedy will be along shortly to create an image for us, folks, and incidentally:

Happy Labor Day

Shane

I know that it was the night the war broke out
Because you and I were driving around
You were doing a story about if people understood
What had happened to their world
Tonight in bed sleeping
The world tonight in bed asleep
You said that you were in touch with the draft resistors
In case the big boys call you up
Youre gonna have to let em dick you around
But dont let em make you do what you cant live with
Tonight in bed with you sleeping
You looked like you were just a little kid
Shane, I said, you gotta watch your ass
You gotta have fear in your heart you gotta have fear in your heart

(words by Richard Farina)

Oh, now is the time for your loving, dear,

And the time for your company

Now when the light of reason fails

And fires burn on the sea

Oh, now in this age of confusion

I have need for your company.

For I am a wild and a lonely child

And the son of an angry man

Now with the high wars raging

I would offer you my hand

For we are the children of darkness

And the prey of a proud, proud land.

It's once I was free to go roaming in

The wind of the springtime mind

And once the clouds I sailed upon

Were sweet as lilac wine

Oh, why are the breezes of summer, dear

Enlaced with a grim design?

So, now is the time for your loving, dear,

And the time for your company

Now when the light of reason fails

And fires burn on the sea

Oh, now in this age of confusion

I have need for your company.
