Good early morning, WA2K folks. I've been an insomniac of late and it was nice to see edgar and our island man sounding.(know what that means?)

M.D. I really enjoyed most of the songs from The Music Man, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this one came from "River City"

There were bells on the hill
But I never heard them ringing,
No, I never heard them at all
Till there was you.

There were birds in the sky
But I never saw them winging
No, I never saw them at all
Till there was you.

And there was music,
And there were wonderful roses,
They tell me,
In sweet fragrant meadows of dawn, and dew.

There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No, I never heard it at all
Till there was you!

Back through the years I go wonderin once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my Momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors, every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat and it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together, sewin every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors that I was so proud of

As she sewed, she told a story from the bible, she had read
About a coat of many colors Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you good luck and happiness
And I just couldn't wait to wear it and Momma blessed it with a kiss

My coat of many colors that my Momma made for me
Made only from rags but I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money, oh, I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors my Momma made for me

So with patches on my britches, holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughin and makin fun of me
My Momma made for me made just for me

And oh, I couldn't understand it for I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love my Momma sewed in every stitch
And I told em all the story Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors was worth more than all their clothes

But they didn't understand it and I tried to make them see
That one is only poor only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money but I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors my Momma made for me made just for me
Made just for me made just for me

Coat of many Colors

Ah, Joseph and his coat of many colors. Dolly, I suppose, based her song upon that, edgar.

I wonder if there will be a cricket?

William Stafford

The Animal Who Drank Up Sound

One day across the lake where echoes come now, an animal that needed sound came down and gazed enormously and instead of making any, he took away from sound. The lake and all the land went ; a fish that jumped went back like a knife and the water died. In all the wilderness around, he drained the rustle from the leaves into the mountain side and folded a quilt over the rocks getting ready to store everything. He buried thousands of Autumns deep, the noise that use to come there.

Then that animal wondered on and began to drink the sound out of all the valleys; the croak of the toads and all the shiny little noise grass blades make. He drank till winter. Then he looked out one night at the stilled places guaranteed around by frozen peaks and held in shallow pools of star light. It was finally tall and still and he stood on the highest ridge where the sky fell away like a perpetual curve and from there he walked on silently and began to starve.

When the moon drifted over that night the whole world lay just like the moon, shining back that still silver, and the moon saw its own animal dead on the snow, its dark absorbent paws and quiet muzzle, and thick, velvet deep fur.

After the animal that drank sound died the whole world lay still and cold for months and the moon yearned and explored, letting its dead light float down the west walls of canyons and then climb its delighted soundless way up the east side . The moon owned the earth its animal had faithfully explored; the sun disregarded the life it used to warm.

But on the north side of a mountain, deep in some rocks, a cricket slept, It had been hiding when that animal passed and as spring came again it waited.

Afraid to crawl out into the heavy stillness, think how deep the cricket felt lost in such a silence- the grass the leaves the water, the stilled animals all depending on such a little thing. But softly it tried, "Cricket"-and back like a river from that one act flowed the kind of would we know; first whisperings, then moves in the grass and leaves; the water splashed and a big night bird screamed.

And then, along came

http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols2/jiminy.jpg

who chirped his little heart out for all those who dared to dream:

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those to love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing
Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true

Good Morning. See you later with some B.D. celeb pictures. Very Happy

Question for our Raggedy. What's the only bug in a box that warns one of intruders by not making a sound?

Give A Little Whistle

That's it, come on now, let's sing

When you get in trouble and
You don't know right from wrong
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle

When you meet temptation and
The urge is very strong
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle

Not just a little squeal
Pucker up and blow
And if your whistles weak, yell
Jiminy cricket
Right

Take the straight and narrow path
And if you start to slide
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle
And always let your conscience be your guide

Take the straight and narrow path
And if you start to slide
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle
And always let your conscience be your guide

A cricket box!

I used to have one, Raggedy. When the cricket is in the box, he will chirp away, but if some stranger enters, there is dead silence and that is his warning.

Oh, I'd have never guessed that one, Letty. I've seen a peanut stand and heard a rubber band but I've never seen a cricket box until today. Rolling Eyes

Today's Keith Carradine's 58th birthday - say, didn't his brother David play a character that was once called "Cricket"?

So, Happy B.D. to Keith and a happy 69th to Connie Stevens; 70th to Dustin Hoffman and 75th to Mel Tillis, too.

Grasshopper. Embarrassed Well, I was close, wasn't I? Laughing

But I do know of a character called "cricket" in a movie. A Bogart/Bacall movie.
Hoagy Carmichael was called "Cricket" in To Have and Have Not.

I like Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy". It got an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1975. It was featured in the movie "Nashville" directed by Robert Altman.

Well, puppy. Entomology isn't our thing, right? Razz

Love Hoagy Carmichael's music almost as much as Johnny Mercer. Don't recall "To Have and Have Not", but I most certainly will check it out.

A memory and a smile, folks, because my husband, my daughter, my son and I would do this one for fun and sing it a capella.

The Nearness Of You

It's not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true

I need no soft lights to enchant me
But if you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night ooh the nearness of you

When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true

I need no soft lights to enchant me
But if you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the nearness of you.

Incidentally, The shuttle Endeavour will lift off this evening. Let's just hope it's not deja vu.

Sixteen Reasons

(Bill Post and Doree Post)

(Sixteen reasons)
Why I (why I) love you

(One) the way you hold my hand
(Two) your laughing eyes
(Three) the way you understand
(Four) your secret sighs
They're all part of sixteen reasons why I (why I) love you

(Five) the way you comb your hair
(Six) your freckled nose
(Seven) the way you say you care
(Eight) your crazy clothes
That's just half of sixteen reasons why I (why I) love you

(Nine) snuggling in the car
(Ten) your wish upon a star
(Eleven) whispering on the phone
(Twelve) your kiss when we're alone

(Thirteen) the way you thrill my heart
(Fourteen) your voice so neat
(Fifteen) you say we'll never part
(Sixteen) our love's complete
Those are all of sixteen reasons why I (why I) love you

(Sixteen reasons)
Why I (why I) love you

Gypsy Song lyrics

Rainclouds, moon shines, I know

Sun burns, stars earn shadows,
sing baby brown eyes
You give me everything to try
I'm following grey skies, grey
Skies lead me lost in the night

We'll dance till were tired
Eat till were full
With a guaranteed window over some where to go
My room needs no 4 walls to cushion the blow, lets go

Maybe you're right maybe I'm wrong
Climb till your pacified
Fight till your strong

We'll dance till were tired
Eat till were full
With a guaranteed window over some where to go
My room needs no 4 walls to cushion the blow, lets go

We'll talk till were empty drink till were blue
You can dare me to race you you can pay me my dues
Your maybe's no answer, cos maybe its you, lets go

Dance till were tired eat till were strong
A guaranteed window where nothing can go wrong
Dance till were tired eat till were full
We've a guaranteed window over somewhere to go, somewhere to go

Dance till were tired drink till you fall
A guaranteed window and no weakness at all
Dance till were weary

Well, edgar, sure miss our hawkman. Here's a mini biography on Connie Stevens, as I simply could not recall neither she nor her songs.

Mini Biography
Born in Brooklyn of Italian and native-American parentage with the unlikely name of Concetta Anna Ingolia, Connie Stevens was raised by grandparents when her parents (both jazz musicians) filed for divorced. She attended Catholic boarding schools in her formative years and a distinct interest in music led to her forming a vocal quartet called "The Foremost" which was comprised of Connie and three men. Those men later became part of "The Lettermen." In Hollywood from 1953, Connie formed yet another vocal group "The Three Debs" while trying to break into films as an extra. Although she managed to co-star in a few mediocre teen dramas such as Young and Dangerous (1957), Eighteen and Anxious (1957), The Party Crashers (1958), and Dragstrip Riot (1958), it was comedian Jerry Lewis who set things in motion by casting the unknown starlet in his comedy Rock-a-Bye Baby (1958). Warner Bros. signed her up for their hot detective series "Hawaiian Eye" (1959) and she was off. As pert and pretty Cricket Blake, a slightly flaky and tomboyish singer/photographer, Connie became an instant teen idol -- trendy and undeniably appealing. A couple of record hits came her way including "Sixteen Reasons" and the novelty song "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb." Connie's acting talent was light and limited, however, and some attempts at adult film drama, including the title role in Susan Slade (1961), Parrish (1961), Palm Springs Weekend (1963) and Two on a Guillotine (1965) came and went. In the 1970s she refocused on her voice and started lining up singing commercials (Ace Hardware) while subsisting in nightclubs and hotels. Connie eventually built herself up as a Las Vegas headlining act. She also starred on Broadway with "The Star-Spangled Girl" and won a Theatre World Award for her performance in 1967. Comedian Bob Hope's made her one of his regular entertainers on his USO tours. Sporadic films came her way every now and then. A TV-movie The Sex Symbol (1974) (TV) had her playing a tragic Marilyn Monroe type goddess. There was also innocuous fun with Grease 2 (1982) and Back to the Beach (1987) with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Episodics on "Murder, She Wrote," "The Love Boat," and "Baywatch" also kept her afloat -- but barely. Once wed to actor James Stacy, she later married and divorced singer Eddie Fisher. From her union with Fisher came two daughters, Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher, both of whom became actors. Single with two daughters, and completely out of sync with Hollywood, Connie started experiencing severe financial woes. In the 1990s the never-say-die personality began a new lucrative career in the infomercial game with skin-care and make-up products. She was unbelievably successful in turning her finances around. Now a self-made tycoon with her own successful beauty line to boot, Connie is living proof that anything can happen in that wild and wacky world called show biz.

Back later with the three men that sang behind her and later became The Lettermen.

The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk
Are secretly unhappy men because
The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk
Get paid for what they do but no applause
They'd gladly bid their dreary jobs good-bye
For anything theatrical and why

There's no business like show business
Like no business I know

Ev'rything about it is appealing
Ev'rything the traffic will allow
Nowhere could you get that happy feeling
When you are stealing that extra bow

There's no people like show people
They smile when they are low

Even with a turkey that you know will fold
You may be stranded out in the cold
Still you wouldn't change for a sack of gold
Let's go on with the show

[2]
The costumes, the scen'ry, the make-up, the props
The audience that lifts you when you're down
The headaches, the heartaches, the backaches, the flops
The sheriff who escorts you out of town
The opening when your heart beats like a drum
The closing when the customers won't come

There's no business like show business
Like no business I know

You get word before the show has started
That your favorite uncle died at dawn
Top of that, your ma and pa have parted
You're broken-hearted, but you go on

There's no people like show people
They don't run out of dough

Yesterday they told you you would not go far
That night you open and there you are
Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star
Let's go on with the show

[3]
The cowboys, the tumblers, the wrestlers, the clowns
The roustabouts who move the show at dawn
The music, the spotlight, the people, the towns
Your baggage with the labels pasted on
The sawdust and the horses and the smell
The towel you've taken from the last hotel

There's no business like show business
If you tell me it's so

Trav'ling thro' the country will be thrilling
Standing out in front on opening nights
Smiling as you watch the benches filling
And your billing out there in lights

There's no people like show people
They don't run out of dough

Angels come from ev'rywhere with lots of jack
And when you lose it, there's no attack
Where could you get money that you don't give back
Let's go on with the show
