I am very much in a Bruce Springsteen mood today...

Cover me

The times are tough now just gettin' tougher
This old world is rough it's just gettin' rougher, cover me
Come on baby, cover me
Well I'm lookin' for a lover who will come on in and cover me

Now promise me baby that you won't let them find us
Hold me in your arms, let's let our love blind us, cover me
Shut the door and cover me
Well I'm lookin' for a lover who will come on in and cover me

Outside's the rain, the drivin' snow
I can hear the wild wind blowin'
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain't goin' out there no more

This whole world is out there just tryin' to score
I've seen enough, don't wanna see anymore, cover me
Come on in and cover me
Well I'm lookin' for a lover who will come on in and cover me

Outside's the rain...
This whole world is out there...cover me
Wrap your arms around me cover me
Well I'm lookin' for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Oh, I'm lookin' for a lover who will come on in and cover me
Mmmm I'm lookin' for a lover who will come on in and cover me

Urs, Welcome back, honey. Strange, we just had a summer thunder storm
that rocked my small studio.

That song is so close to being right, gal. I don't know about most women, but I think this melody is basically saying the same thing as Bruce Springsteen.

Maria Mena

Just Hold Me

Comfortable as I am,
I need your reassurance
Comfortable as you are,
You count the days
But if I wanted silence I would whisper
If I wanted loneliness I'd choose to go
If I liked rejection I'd audition
And if I didn't love you, you would know

So why can't you just hold me,
how come it's so hard?
Do you like to see me broken?
Why do I still care?

You say you see the light now
at the end of this narrow hall
I wish it didn't matter
I wish I didn't give you all

Rex, I don't know what Clary had in mind, but I was just jokin' around. I realize what your song was saying. It was implying that children want answers from their parents (especially mothers) about why the world is cold, right?

Ah, just recalled Bob's song for Nair.

Some day, when I'm awfully low,
When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you...
And the way you look tonight.

Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight.

With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart...
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
It touches my foolish heart.

Lovely ... Never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it ?
'Cause I love you ... Just the way you look tonight.

Mm, Mm, Mm, Mm,
Just the way you look to-night.

Quote:
Oh Stingy Ginny saved up all her pennies
Straight to the bank she would go
The sharks would have their hands around her
But none could get her dough

Ginny's fellow was a slick high yellow
Sent away to jail one day
He cried for bail, then turned real pale
When I(*) heard Ginny say

Oh I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away
It's in demand
They wants it every day

I've been saving it up for a long long time
To give it away would be more than a crime
Your eyes may roll, your teeth may grit
But none of my money will you git
You can look at my bank book
But I'll never let you feel my purse

Cause I'm a woman, believes in safety first, safety first
Said if you want my money, here's my plan
I'm saving it up for a real good man
I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away

She said I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away
It's in demand
Folks cryin' for it every day

I've been saving it up for a long long time
To give it away would be more than a crime
Your eyes may roll, your teeth may grit
But none of this small change will you git
You can look at my bank book
But I'll never let you put your hands on my purse

Lord I'm a woman, believes in safety first, safety first
Say if you want my money, here's my plan
I'm not savin' it up for no naked(?) man
I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away

(*) Bessie distinctly says "I" though I think it should be "he".

Howlin Wolf

Natchez Burning
(1956 recording)

Did you ever hear about the burning,
That happened way down in Natchez Mississippi town.
Did you ever hear about the burning,
That happened way down in Natchez Mississippi town.
Those buildings got to burning, there's my baby layin'on the ground.

Charlotte Jones was there, Luiza was there
Rosie Mae was there, Louise was there
Did you ever hear about the burning,
That happened way down in Natchez Mississippi town.
I stood back, was lookin', and the old building come tumble down.

I love that song by Bessie, hbg. Sounds like she means business. Love the line, "I ain't savin' it up for no naked man." Thanks, Canada via Hamburg.

Here's one by Bessie that is also funny, then we'll look at edgar "howlin". Razz

Put It Right Here (Or Keep It Out There)
Another vaudeville tune from Bessie, where she even brings in Chinamen to support her argument... Recorded in 1928.

PUT IT RIGHT HERE (OR KEEP IT OUT THERE) (Porter Grainger)

I had a man for fifteen years
Give him his room and board
Once he was like a Cadillac
Now he's like an old worn out Ford
He never brought me a lousy dime
And put it in my hand
So there'll be some changes from now on
According to my plan

He's got to get it, bring it, and put it right here
Or else he's gonna keep it out there
If he must steal it, beg it, or borrow it somewhere
Long as he gets it, I don't care
I'm tired of fryin' pork chops
To grease his fat lips
And he has to find another place
For to park his old hips
He must get it, and bring it, and put it right here
Or else he's gonna keep it out there

The bee gets the honey, and brings it to the corn
Else he's kicked out of his home sweet home
To show you that they brings it, watch the dog and the cat
Everything even brings it, from a mule to a mare
The rooster gets the worm, and brings it to the hen
That oughta be a tip to all you no-good men
The groundhog even brings it and puts it in his hole
So my man has got to bring it, doggone his soul

He's got to get it, bring it, and put it right here
Or else he's gonna keep it out there
If he must steal it, beg it, or borr' it somewhere
Long as he gets it child, I don't care
I'm gonna tell him like the Chinaman: when you don't bring 'em check
You don't get 'em laundry, if you break 'em down neck
You got to get it, bring it, and put it right here
Or else you gonna keep it out there

edgar, it seems that Howlin Wolf is giving us a bit of music history. Like the compression, Texas.

Here's one that I have heard, but I'm not sure of the reference to Dylan at the end.

Black Bottom Blues

If you go down to Black Bottom
Put your money in your shoes
'Cause them Black Bottom women
Got them Black Bottom blues
Oh, good mama -- papa's got them Black Bottom blues

Once I knew a preacher
Preached the Bible through and through
He went down to Black Bottom
Now his preachin' days are through
Oh, good mama -- papa's got them Black Bottom Blues

When you go down to Black Bottom
Leave your credit card at home
'Cause them Black Bottom women
Jump on a man like a dog on a bone
Oh, sweet mama -- papa's got them Black Bottom blues

Once I had a woman
Meant the world to me
She hung around Black Bottom
Now she ain't what she used to be
Lordy, mama -- papa's got them Black Bottom blues

If you go down to the Bottom
You will never reach the top
'Cause the women in Black Bottom
Jus' dunno when to stop
Oh, good mama -- daddy's got them Black Bottom blues

If you go down to Black Bottom
Put your money in your shoes
'Cause the women in Black Bottom
Got them Black Bottom blues
Oh, sweet mama -- papa's got them Black Bottom blues

No wonder Dylan felt a little uneasy when she bent down to tie the laces of his shoe. . . .
Just remember -- never take your shoes off. . .

Just like The House of the Rising Sun, that has to be about a a red light district ,right?

The reference is to a line in

Tangled Up in Blue
Bob Dylan

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin',
I was layin' in bed
Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red.
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough.
And I was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through,
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best.
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue,"
Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell.
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
Right outside of Delacroix.
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs,
There was music in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside.
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn,
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,
Tangled up in blue.

So now I'm goin' back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now.
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives.
Don't know how it all got started,
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.
But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
Tangled up in blue.

I don't have a personal gripe with "mothers", fathers, siblings or any other institution of life. Only that no institution of life is above scrutiny...

The song "mother" was not posted in a mean spirit or to emphasize one form of hatred over another.

...for there are two sides to every "wall". Smile

The Thin Ice

Momma loves her baby,
And daddy loves you, too.
And the sea may look warm to ya, babe,
And the sky may look blue.

Oooooo babe.
Oooooooo baby blue.
Oooooo ooohh babe.

If you should go skating,
On the thin ice of modern life,
Dragging behind you the silent reproach,
Of a million tear-stained eyes,
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice,
Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind,
With your fear flowing out from behind
You as you claw the thin ice.

Good morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

edgar, I am glad that you explained about Bob and his shoes all tangled up in blue. I declare that man has a way with allusions, no? Thanks, Texas.

Rex, and you had better believe that you are right on certain institutions as I was thinking of "banking" in particular. I do believe, Maine, that many are getting tangled up in green. Razz

Thanks for the Pink Floyd song. Rather reminds me of Jethro Tull's "skating away on the thin ice of a new day."

Our Walter had a thread on Bastille Day and included many factions of celebration and observations. One example that he mentioned was a German band that performed, and I really became intrigued. Here is a song from the rock group, Tokio Hotel, in both English and German.

Monsoon

I'm staring at a broken door
There's nothing left here anymore
My room is cold
It's making me insane

I've been waiting here so long
But now the moment seems to've come,
I see the dark clouds coming up again.

Running through the monsoon
Beyond the world,
To the end of time,
Where the rain won't hurt
Fighting the storm,
Into the blue,
And when I loose myself I think of you,
Together we'll be running somewhere new
Through the monsoon.
Just me and you

A half moon's fading from my sight
I see a vision in its light
But now it's gone and left me so alone
I know I have to find you now
Can hear your name, I don't know how
Why can't we make this darkness feel like home?

Running through the monsoon
Beyond the world
To the end of time
Where the rain won't hurt
Fighting the storm
Into the blue
And when I loose myself I think of you
Together we'll be running somewhere new
And nothing can hold me back from you
Through the monsoon

Hey! Hey!

I'm fighting all this power
Coming in my way
Let it send me straight to you
I'll be running night and day
I'll be with you soon
Just me and you
We'll be there soon
So soon

Running through the monsoon
Beyond the world
To the end of time
Where the rain won't hurt
Fighting the storm
Into the blue
And when I loose myself I think of you
Together we'll be running somewhere new
And nothing can hold me back from you
Through the monsoon

Through the monsoon
Just me and you
Through the monsoon
Just me and you

Titel Monsun

He! He!

Ich kämpfe diese ganze Energie
Kommen in meine Weise
Laßt ihm mich dir gerade schicken
Ich bin laufende Nacht und Tag
Ich bin mit dir bald
Gerade ich und du
Wir sind dort bald
So bald

Tyin Knots in the Devil's Tail
Ramblin Jack Elliot

Way high up in the Sierry Peaks
Where the yellow-jack pines grow tall,
Old Buster Jiggs and Sandy Bob
Had a round-up camp last fall.

Well they took along their running irons
Maybe a dog or two,
And they 'lowed thy'd brand every long-eared calf
That came within their view.

Now every little long-eared dogie
That didn't push up by day,
Got his long ears whittled and his old hide scorched
In a most artistic way.

One fine day, says Buster Jiggs,
As he throws his seago down,
"I'm tired of cow-pyrography
And I think I'm a goin' into town."

Well they saddled up, and they hit a lope
For it warn't no sight of a ride,
And them was the days that a good cow-punch
Could oil up his insides.

Well they started in at Kentucky Bar,
At the head of Whisky Row,
And they wound her up at the Depot House
About forty drinks below.

Well they sets 'em up and they turns around
And they started in the other way,
And to tell the God-forsaken truth
Them boys got drunk that day.

They was on their way, goin' back to camp
A-packin' that awful load,
When who should they meet but the Devil himself
Come a-traipsin' down the road.

He says, "You ornery cowboy skunks
You better go hunt for your holes,
'Cause I've come up from Hell's rim rock
Just to gather in your souls.

"The Devil be damned," says Buster Jiggs,
"Us boys is a little bit tight;
But you don't go gatherin' no cowboys' souls
Without one helluva fight."

Now Buster Jiggs could ride like hell
And throw a lasso, too,
So he threw it over the Devil's horns
And he took his dallies true.

Now Sandy Bob was a reata man
With his gut-line coiled up neat;
But he shook her out and he builds a loop
And he roped the Devils hind feet.

Well they stretches him out and they tails him down
While the running-irons were getting hot,
And they cropped and swallow-forked his ears
And they branded him up a lot.

Well they trimmed his horns way down to his head
Tied ten knots in his tail for a joke,
Then they went off and left him there
Tied up to a little pin oak.

Now when you're high in the Sierry Peaks
And you hear one hell of a wail,
Well you know it's just the Devil himself
Yellin' 'bout them knots in his tail.

Don't Know Why

I waited 'til I saw the sun
I don't know why I didn't come
I left you by the house of fun
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I'll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road along

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Something has to make you run
I don't know why I didn't come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

Ray Of Light

Verse:
Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder
Do my tears of mourning sink beneath the sun
She's got herself a universe gone quickly
For the call of thunder threatens everyone

Chorus:

And I feel like I just got home
And I feel
And I feel like I just got home
And I feel

Faster than the speeding light she's flying
Trying to remember where it all began
She's got herself a little piece of heaven
Waiting for the time when Earth shall be as one

(chorus)

Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light
Quicker than a ray of light

(verse)

And I feel
Quicker than a ray of light
Then gone for
Someone else shall be there
Through the endless years

She's got herself a universe
She's got herself a universe
She's got herself a universe

And I feel
And I feel
And I feel like I just got home
And I feel

Quicker than a ray of light she's flying
Quicker than a ray of light I'm flying

edgar, I love ballads about how the devil has been caught and tamed. That one is especially good, Texas.

Hey, T-Rex. A ray of light and a heart drenched in wind; both such lovely lines. Unfortunately, Maine, my little studio doesn't have your tube. <smile>

Well, folks, here it is high noon and before I have a Sunday brunch with my company, how about this one by Etta James.

I want a Sunday kind of love
A love to last past Saturday night
And I'd like to know it's more than love at first sight
Well I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh, yeah yeah

And my arms need someone to hold
To keep me warm when Mondays and Tuesdays grow cold
I need love for all my life to have and to hold
Well I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh yeah yeah yeah

I don't want nothing baby
Well, I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh yeah

edgar, that song really gave me a smile, Texas. Love it, and made me recall that one of the epithets for the devil is "old scratch".

You know, folks, my handy man, the one who turned my garage into an acceptable addition to my house, is from Montreal, Canada. Not only does he speak and sing in French, but we sat for some time discussing Edith Piaff. I had no idea that the "waif sparrow" had such a tragic life.

a smal bio for our listeners.

What It's Like to Play an Icon
Marion Cotillard talks about portraying Edith Piaf, about the perils of lip-synching and how she learned to stop worshipping her subject.

For those of you who are interested, here is the rest of the story.

From Melissa Manchester, then

La Vie En Rose

(M. David, Louiguy, E. Piaf)

I thought that love was just a word
They sang about in songs I heard.
It took your kisses to reveal
That I was wrong, and love is real.

Hold me close and hold me fast,
The magic spell you cast
This is La vie en rose.
When you kiss me heaven sighs,
And though I close my eyes
I see La vie en rose.
When you press me to your heart...
I'm in a world apart...
A world where roses bloom.
And when you speak... angels sing from above,
Everyday words seem to turn into love songs.
Give your heart and soul to me,
And life will always be
La vie en rose

Thanks for the info on Piaf, Letty. I made a note of the movie so I don't miss it when it comes on pay cable TV.

Here are a few of today's birthday celebrities:

Jan-Michael Vincent (63); Linda Ronstadt (61) and Forest Whitaker (46).

True Love Ways
Buddy Holly

Just you know why
why you and I
will by and by
know true love ways

Sometimes we'll sigh
sometimes we'll cry
and we'll know why
just you and I
know true love ways

Throughout the days
our true love ways
will bring us joys to share
with those who really care

Sometimes we'll sigh
sometimes we'll cry
and we'll know why
just you and I
know true love ways
