dadpad, Welcome back, Auzzie. Listening to all the "Arrrrrs" as we speak." Razz Amazing that Y'all have a "Talk Like a Pirate Day." Loved the Cardiff Rose, and thanks for sharing it, buddy.

And, from Disney to Australia via Johnny Depp:

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage plunder, we rifle and loot.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We extort and pilfer, we filch and sack.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
Maraud and embezzle and even highjack.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We kindle and char and in flame and ignite.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
We burn up the city, we're really a fright.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

We're rascals and scoundrels, we're villians and knaves.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
We're devils and black sheep, we're really bad eggs.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

We're beggars and blighters and ne'er do-well cads,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.

Some Keltic Lyrics

Our boots and clothes are all in pawn
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down
It's mighty drafty 'round Cape Horn
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

Oh, you pinks and posies
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

But it's round Cape Horn that we must go
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down
For that is where them whalefish blow
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

Oh, you pinks and posies
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

My dear old mother wrote to me
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down
Oh, son, dear son come home from sea
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

Oh, you pinks and posies
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

Now one more pull and that will do
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down
For we're the boys to pull her through
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

Oh, you pinks and posies
Go down, you blood red roses, Go down

Hey, dys. Great song, cowboy. What is it about pirates and pinks and roses?

Just did a check on Jean Lafitte, the gentleman pirate who seemed to like the name "privateer" much better.

"He left a corsair's name to other times,
Linked one virtue to a thousand crimes."

-- Lord Byron

He has been called "The Corsair," "The Buccaneer," "The King of Barataria," "The Terror of the Gulf," "The Hero of New Orleans". At three separate times, U.S. presidents have condemned, exonerated and again condemned his actions. He is known for his piracy in the Gulf of Mexico, and lauded for his heroism in the Battle of New Orleans. Each personae seems to balance the other. He hated being called "pirate," for, as he saw it, he was a "privateer" serving an economic purpose in an economically frugal time in a new country that needed to economize. When he at last sailed away from American shores, he felt betrayed by a country that didn't understand the difference.

Well, edgar, thanks for the reminder of that notorious pirate. If I recall correctly, he said his last "Arrrrr" on Ocracoke, an island on the outer banks of North Carolina. As a matter of fact, the legends of the Outer Banks have the originals as being "land pirates", who made that entire string of islands a home after being cut loose as privateers.

a little tune about privateers

Barrett's Privateers
Stan Rogers

1. O the year was 1778
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
A letter of marque came from the king
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

2. O Elcid Barrett cried the town
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
Would make for him the Antelope's crew

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

3. The Antelope sloop was a sickening site
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She'd list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

4. On the King's birthday we put to sea
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Ninety-one days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

5. On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
When a great big Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

6. The Yankee lay low down with gold
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She was broad and fat and loose in stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

7. Then at length she stood two cables away
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Our cracked four-pounders made awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

8. The Antelope shook and pitched on her side
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the main truck carried off both me legs

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

9. Now here I lay in my twenty-third year
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
It's been six years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

Hey, dj. I am flummoxed(whatever that means) at how the Canucks and Auzzies can come up with so many wonderful "high seas" songs. Thanks, buddy. Hope you are feeling much better, honey. Especially like this stanza, because it is often so true:

" O the year was 1778
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
A letter of marque came from the king
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen."

That just reminded me of a German joke that I once heard. Where in the world is Walter? Does he not know of the beginning of our Civil War? Razz

Marvelous, Raggedy. Know every one of the celebs this time. (incidentally, it's magic day here on WA2K.) <smile>

I promise that I will NOT play "Here's to You Mrs. Robinson". Hey, was Roddy in Planet of the Apes? My word, I had forgotten that movie.

Well, folks, there are cowboys in Australia; Calgary stampedes and mounted police in Canada; dys in Albaturkey, and my daddy was one, so here's a song inspired by Calamity Jane on the Sedona observation:

Ridin' Down the Canyon and this version by Willie Nelson.

G B7 C G
When evening chores are over at our ranch house on the plain
A7 D D7
And all I've got to do is lay around
G B7 C G
I saddle up my pony and ride off down the trail
A A7 D D7 G
To watch the desert sun go down

G B7 C G
Ridin' down the canyon to watch the sun go down
A A7 D D7 G
A picture that no artist e'er could paint
G7 B7 G
White faced cattle lowin' on the mountian side
A A7 D D7
Hear a coyote whinin' for it's mate
G7 C D G
Cactus plants are bloomin', sagebrush every where
A A7 D D7
Granite spires are standin' all around
G B7
I tell you folks it's heaven
C G
To be ridin' down the trail
A A7 D D7 G
When the desert sun goes down

And that song is also for Paul Morris. RIP

My favorite "cowboy" singer has always been Gene Autrey. It was only after I bought a few collections the past couple of years I realized how many songs he recorded, including the original version of Blueberry Hill

Have I Told You Lately That I Love You
Gene Autry

Have I told you lately that I love you
Could I tell you once again somehow
Have I said with all my heart and soul how I adore you
Well, darlin', I'm telling you now

My world would end without a mem'ry of you
I'm no good without you anyhow
Oh, have I told you lately that I love you
My darlin', I'm telling you now

---- Instrumental Interlude ----

Have I told you lately how I miss you
When the stars are shining in the sky
Have I told you why the nights are long
When you're not with me
Well, darlin', I'm telling you now

Have I told you lately when I'm sleeping
Every dream, I dream is you somehow
Have I told you that I'd like to share your love forever
Well, darlin', I'm telling you now

My world would end without a mem'ry of you
I'm no good without you anyhow
Oh, have I told you lately that I love you
Oh, darlin', I'm telling you now

Shocked edgar, that was one big revelation, and it seems to me that our Turtle was "Back in the Saddle" again. Do they ride horses in Hawaii? How little we know about original authors. I'm afraid that Americans even claim that Homer(not Simpson) was one of them, and perhaps Roddy was the one who led the blind poet around. Razz

One gift I got today was from my eldest daughter. It's Modern Times, the new CD by Bob Dylan. I had already searched the album on Rolling Stone magazine's site and listened to it in its entirety for free. A week or so back it hit #1 status. A non Dylan fan told my brother it's "wonderful." I read a statement comparing it to Highway 61 Revisited (Which introduced us to Like a Rolling Stone"). Well, the songs are really good, and the treatment of them is reasonably competent, but, to me, Modern Times is not so different from his last few studio albums. I don't unconditionally love the band he's using right now. As you know, I love the guy. In 1964, I vowed to follow his career, for as long as we both were healthy enough to go on.

My criticism of Dylan is, simply, his voice is worn out. I don't suggest he stop recording, but to surround himself with two or three vocalists who can lift his songs over the rough spots by singing along with him.

edgar, Is today your birthday? Or are you tellin' <smile>

I have heard Dylan maybe twice. I don't have a thing by him, but I do appreciate his talent.

How about a little Shakespeare for today, folks?

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

-- William Shakespeare

That's the sonnet that my sister and I have discussed (in a reasonable fashion) concerning a person's worth.

Ah, edgar, How does one say Happy Birthday in Texanese. <smile>

For you, a song:

ยป Mr. Tambourine Man

Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for Ed
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for Ed
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand
Vanished from my hand
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.

Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for Ed
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for Ed
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
To be wanderin'
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it.

Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for Ed
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Though you might hear laughin', spinnin' swingin' madly across the sun
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facin'
And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're
Seein' that he's chasing.

Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for Ed
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

How's that, Texas?
