Well, thank goodness, folks. There's our Raggedy with pictures perfect. I declare, PA, I never thought about it until some character on the series Special Victims Unit on TV made the remark that Shane was dead atop his horse as the kid called out, "Come Back, Shane" Thanks, honey, 'cause I didn't WANT him to be dead. Silly Letty. <smile>

Well, there's Charlie and Alan, but I'm not certain of the other too.

They are the other two in Bob's bios, Letty. Eileen Brennan (she is a very funny lady) and Vallerie Perrine.

Quote from Wikipedia:

"After urging young Joey to refrain from a life of guns and violence, Shane leaves for parts unknown. Due to the ambiguous nature of the final shot, there is some question as to whether or not Shane actually survives his wounds."

There is no question in my mind. Shane lived.

Yes, I realized that Raggedy. I just couldn't remember where I had seen those ladies, PA.

This is the best that I could do about Shane who must be alive and well as he rides off into the sunset.

Does everybody know that Shane and Hondo are the same character, same story?

Hmmm, edgar. No, I, for one, did not know that. Remind us, if you will, of Hondo.

Just to let you all know I'm…

Back in the Saddle Again
Autry, Gene Lyrics

I'm back in the saddle again
Out where a friend is a friend
Where the longhorn cattle feed
On the lowly gypsum weed
Back in the saddle again

Ridin' the range once more
Totin' my old .44
Where you sleep out every night
And the only law is right
Back in the saddle again

Whoopi-ty-aye-oh
Rockin' to and fro
Back in the saddle again
Whoopi-ty-aye-yay
I go my way
Back in the saddle again

I'm back in the saddle again
Out where a friend is a friend
Where the longhorn cattle feed
On the lowly gypsum weed
Back in the saddle again

Ridin' the range once more
Totin' my old .44
Where you sleep out every night
And the only law is right
Back in the saddle again

Whoopi-ty-aye-oh
Rockin' to and fro
Back in the saddle again
Whoopi-ty-aye-yay
I go my way
Back in the saddle again

Well, I have to back off somewhat. Hondo is a John Wayne film (1953) in which he rides in with his dog, named "dog" and stays with a woman and her son. Dog is played by the same dog that played Lassie. The departure is in that there are Indians in the John Wayne movie and Jack Palance in the other. Watching both movies within a year of each other, it seemed to me the stories were the same.

Try, I am so glad that you and Gene are back again, saddle or no. We were concerned about you, buddy. Hey, I played that Doobie Bro song for you.<smile> Did that help? Razz

edgar, I looked up the movie as well, but I didn't see it, Texas. Doesn't matter, however, because Raggedy and I know that John and Alan are riding on that great cloud in the sky.

Speaking of clouds, folks:

Tin Angel by Joni Mitchell

Varnished weeds in window jars
Tarnished beads on tapestries
Kept in satin boxes are
Reflections of love's memories

Letters from across the seas
Roses dipped in sealing wax
Valentines and maple leaves
Tucked into a paperback

Guess I'll throw them all away
I found someone to love today

Dark with darker moods is he
Not a golden Prince who's come
Through columbines and wizardry
To talk of castles in the sun

Still I'll take a chance and see
I found someone to love today

There's a sorrow in his eyes
Like the angel made of tin
What will happen if I try
To place another heart in him

In a Bleeker Street cafe
I found someone to love today
I found someone to love today

Edgar:

Jack Schaefer wrote "Shane" and Louis L'Amour wrote "Hondo". I saw Hondo not too long ago. IMDb doesn't list who played "Sam", the dog, (who would eat only what he could catch), but he didn't look like Lassie.

Of course Shane was dead. The story makes no sense otherwise. The character of Shane was even less multi-dimensional than the Clint Eastwood spagetti westerns. Jack Palance was the only role of dimension.

Great discussion, here on our radio. edgar and Raggedy are both filmography experts, and that makes it even more interesting, folks.

Now here is another provocative thought. This song is listed as having been sung by Britney Spears, but another Louis did it originally:

Britney Spears
» Oops! ...I Did It Again

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

I think I did it again
I made you believe we're more than just friends
Oh baby
It might seem like a crush
But it doesn't mean that I'm serious
'Cause to lose all my senses
That is just so typically me
Oh baby, baby

[CHORUS:]
Oops!...I did it again
I played with your heart, got lost in the game
Oh baby, baby
Oops!...You think I'm in love
That I'm sent from above
I'm not that innocent

You see my problem is this
I'm dreaming away
Wishing that heroes, they truly exist
I cry, watching the days
Can't you see I'm a fool in so many ways
But to lose all my senses
That is just so typically me
Baby, oh

[Repeat CHORUS]

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

"All aboard"
"Britney, before you go, there's something I want you to have"
"Oh, it's beautiful, but wait a minute, isn't this...?"
"Yeah, yes it is"
"But I thought the old lady dropped it into the ocean in the end"
"Well baby, I went down and got it for you"
"Oh, you shouldn't have"

Oops!...I did it again to your heart
Got lost in this game, oh baby
Oops!...You think that I'm sent from above
I'm not that innocent

Oops, I did it again, dys. Razz Sorry I missed your input. Was Jack Palance the villain in Shane. It's been a long time since I saw that movie, cowboy. I could research it, but I would rather hear it from you.

Long before such canine upstarts as Benji and Beethoven prowled the multiplexes, there was Lassie. Much more than a dog, she was a devoted companion, a courageous protector and a fearless fighter. Indeed many baby-boomers cannot hear "Greensleeves", the indelible theme music from later episodes of her long-running TV series, without feeling an exquisite… See Full Lassie (II) Biography

5.01 AM (The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking)
Roger Waters

An angel on a Harley
Pulls across to greet a fellow rolling stone
Puts his bike up on it's stand
Leans back and then extends
A scarred and greasy hand...he said
He said, how ya doin bro?
Where ya been?
Where ya goin'?
Then he takes your hand
In some strange Californian handshake
And breaks the bone
[Whiny person:] "Have a nice day, hehe"

A housewife from Encino
Whose husband's on the golf course
With his book of rules
Breaks and makes a 'U' and idles back
To take a second look at you
You flex your rod
Fish takes the hook
Sweet vodka and tobacco in her breath
Another number in your little black book

These are the pros and cons of hitchhiking
These are the pros and cons of hitchhiking
Oh babe, I must be dreaming

I'm standing on the leading edge
The Eastern seaboard spread before my eyes
Jump, says Yoko Ono
I'm too scared and too good looking, I cried
Go on, she says
Why don't you give it a try?
Why prolong the agony all men must die
Do you remember Dick Tracy?
Do you remember Shane?
[Child:] "And mother wants you."
Could you see him selling tickets
Where the buzzard circles over
[Child:] "Shane."
The body on the plain
Did you understand the music Yoko
Or was it all in vain?
[Child:] "Shane..."
The bitch said something mystical
(Herro)
So I stepped back on the kerb again

These are the pros and cons of hitchhiking
These are the pros and cons of hitchhiking
Oh babe, I must be dreaming again

My, word, dj. You are a lab rat, Canada. That was an experiment in:"explicate if you can." Love it, buddy.

Well, folks, here's a simplier song and it has no "shane." Razz

Hitchin' A Ride - Green Day

Hey mister where you headed
Are you in a hurry
I need a lift to happy hour, say oh no
Do you break for distilled spirits
I need a break as well
The well that inebriates the guilt - 1 2
1 2 3 4

Cold turkey's getting stale
Tonight I'm eating crow
Fermented salmonella poison oak, no
There's a drought a the fountain of youth
Now I'm dehydrating
My tongue is swelling up I say - 1 2
1 2 3 4

Troubled times
You know I cannot lie
I'm off the wagon and I'm hitching a ride

There's a drought at the fountain of youth
Now I'm dehydrating
My tongue is swelling up
I say; shite!

Troubled times
You know I cannot lie
I'm off the wagon and I'm hitching a ride
(Don't know where I'm going) hitchin' a ride
(Don't know where I'm going) hitchin' a ride (ad nauseum)

Lassie. I'm floored. Very Happy Which one of the 9, I wonder.

From Wikipedia:

"All 9 Lassies have been male, playing a female character. The female collie loses her coat at least once a year making it unsuitable for use year round. Also, the male is larger and a child actor can play opposite the dog for a longer period of time."

So, who came first - Schaefer or L'Amour?

Jack Palance as scary Jack Wilson in Paramount's Shane
Jack Palance as Jack Wilson
Shane (1953)

Western fans can debate the lower portion of this list, but the top spot is a no-brainer. Jack Wilson, the legendary gunfighter from Cheyenne, is the standard by which all other outlaws must be measured. A lean, black-garbed desperado with cold eyes and a devilish grin, Wilson confronts his prey with threats muttered in a soft, guttural growl that exudes intimidation. It doesn't hurt that he's played by Jack Palance, who could wear a dress and still be scary. Though he doesn't appear until nearly an hour into the film, and speaks only 12 lines before perishing in the climactic showdown, Palance earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Obviously, the Motion Picture Academy was afraid of him, too.
