Maureen McGovern
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A former secretary, Maureen McGovern quickly became the new "it" singer in 1973 with the Oscar-winning "Morning After."Maureen Therese McGovern (born July 27, 1949 in Youngstown, Ohio) is an American singer and Broadway actress.

As a child, McGovern would listen to her father's barbershop quartet rehearse in their home. She was told by her elders that she began singing at the tender age of three, and would sometimes sing herself to sleep with things she heard on the radio. She decided at age eight that she wanted to be a professional singer, and she developed a taste for various types of music, including jazz, showtunes, oldies, and folk. Her influences include Barbra Streisand and Dionne Warwick.

After graduating from high school in 1967, she worked as a secretary and performed part-time as a singer for a local folk band called Sweet Rain. Her singing caught the attention of Russ Regan, then head of 20th Century Records, in 1972 when he heard a demo she had recorded. Regan was searching for a singer to record "The Morning After", the theme from The Poseidon Adventure (1972 film) for release. He hired McGovern sight unseen to record the song, which led to her signing with 20th Century Records. The song was a failure at first, but after it won an Oscar for Best Original Song, it quickly climbed the pop charts, reaching #1 in 1973.

In 1974, she recorded two movie themes: "We May Never Love Like This Again" (from the disaster film The Towering Inferno, in which she made a short appearance when she is seen singing the song as the evening's entertainment) and "Wherever Love Takes Me" (from the British disaster film Gold). The former, though not a hit, won an Oscar, and the latter received an Oscar nomination. These two songs (along with "The Morning After") led the media to call McGovern "the Disaster Theme Queen." McGovern continued touring and recording albums and movie songs (including a version of "Can You Read My Mind", the love theme from 1978's Superman, which was not recorded for the film) throughout the seventies. Toward the end of the decade, she recorded "Different Worlds", the theme from a short-lived TV sitcom entitled Angie. The song was her only other Top 40 single aside from "The Morning After," reaching #18 on the Pop charts in 1979, and also reaching #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In 1980, she made a cameo appearance as the singing nun, Sister Angelina, in the comedy-disaster movie Airplane!.

At the beginning of the 1980s, McGovern gave up movie themes to begin a career on Broadway, despite having no acting experience. In 1981 she made her Broadway debut as Mabel in a revival of Gilbert & Sullivan's musical The Pirates of Penzance. She then performed in two productions with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera - The Sound of Music (1981) as Maria, and South Pacific (1982), as Nellie Forbush. She continued her theatrical career throughout the eighties and originated the role of Mary in the Off-Broadway production of Brownstone in 1985.

She slowly returned to music in the mid-eighties, contributing songs to musical soundtracks and recording for various-artist compilations. She also returned to touring and performing in concerts and began establishing herself as a classy, jazzy nightclub performer. She waited eight years to come out with another solo album, in 1987 releasing Another Woman in Love, a collection of her favorite songs by various American composers plus a few original songs, all containing solo piano accompaniment. The next year, she released State of the Heart, a fully orchestrated album containing contemporary love songs, including the original version of "On My Way to You", by Alan & Marilyn Bergman and Michel LeGrand.

In 1989, she performed her debut concert in Carnegie Hall, singing a collection of songs by George Gershwin. The concert was recorded live and released that year as an album entitled Naughty Baby; it features a very first recording of a lost Gershwin song "A Corner of Heaven With You" (written ca. 1917).

From the nineties into the 21st century, McGovern continued her careers in musical theatre, performing in concerts, and recording albums, and she occasionally made guest appearances on television. Other recordings include Baby I'm Yours (1992), a collection of her favorite songs from 1955 to 1970, and Out of This World (1996), a collection of songs by Harold Arlen. She was twice nominated for a Grammy, for her albums The Music Never Ends (1997), a collection of songs by Alan & Marilyn Bergman, and The Pleasure of His Company (1998), another voice/piano album.

In 2003, Out of This World and The Music Never Ends were rereleased by Fynsworth Alley Records; both albums included bonus tracks, the former two, and the latter three.

"Can you read my mind?"

Can you read my mind?
do you know what it is you do to me?
don't know who you are
just a friend from another star

Here I am, like a kid at the school
holding hands with a God or a fool
will you look at me, quivering,
like a little girl, shivering,
you can see right through me.

Can you read my mind?
can you picture the things I'm thinking of?
wondering why you are
all the wonderful things you are.
You can fly, you belong to the sky
you and I could belong to each other.

If you need a friend,
I'm the one to fly too
If you need to be loved
here I am, read my mind

Will you look at me, quivering,
like a little girl, shivering,
you can see right through me.

Can you read my mind?
can you picture the things I'm thinking of?
wondering why you are
all the wonderful things you are.
You can fly, you belong to the sky

Hey, hawkman. Glad to see you back with bio's, Boston. We missed you.

Who says, Americans can't understand Chinese. <smile> Funny, and thanks.

Here's the only celeb with which I am not familiar, folks:

http://www.worthington.org/bicentennial/images/upload/maureen-mcgovern.jpg

Not certain if this is one of her recordings, but I'll play it anyway.

He's a rebel and you may not like his
looks or his style
but he's faster than light and he
can walk a miracle mile
he'll point you out and he'll pull you in
I guarantee he'll be your best friend
He's a rebel and he's gonna be good anyhow
and the boys in the group they just
want to drag him way down
he's so straight ahead, he'll blow your mind
he can be strong and yet so kind
Chorus
What you see is what you get
and what you get you won't regret
'cause he's on the line
what you want is what he's got and
what he's got, he's got a lot
'cause it's allright
it's allright
Ooh he's a rebel, written up in the
lambs book of life
and there'll be no escape because
the stage has been set for a while
if he comes your way, he'll make you
surrender
his story's clear and his voice
so tender
Repeat chorus
If he comes your way he'll make you
surrender
his words are clear and his
love's forever
he's a rebel and he doesn't conform
that's for sure

somehow, bob omitted this career highlight of Peggy Fleming:

The National Pork Producers Council is trying to boost consumer interest with former Olympic Figure Skating Champ Peggy Fleming and a $7 million pitch presenting pork as the "other white meat," comparing it favorably with poultry.

(Time magazine, 10-12-87)

http://time-proxy.yaga.com/time/archive/printout/0,23657,965692,00.html

but here's a song tribute to that great campaign:

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
Tra la la la la
Long ago there were three pigs
Little handsome pigs
For the big, but very big, very bad wolf,
They did not give three figs
Number one was very gay
And he built his house with hay
With a hey hey toot he blew on his flute
And he played around all day
Now number two was fond of jigs
And so he built his house with twigs
Hey, diddle diddle he played on his fiddle
And danced with lady pigs
Number three said: "nix on tricks,
I shall build my house with bricks!"
He had no chance to sing or dance,
'Cause work and play don't mix
Ha, ha, ha, the two little do-little pigs
Just winked and laughed Ah! Woo!
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
Tra la la la la
Came the day when fate did frown
And a wolf blew into town
With a gruff huff puff, he puffed just enough
And the hay house fell right down!
[Laughing]
One and two were scared to death
Of the big bad wolfy's breath
All the hair of your chinny chin I'll blow you in
And the twig house answered yes
No one left but number three
To save that piglet family
So when they knocked, he fast unlocked
And said come in with me
Now they all were safe inside
But the bricks hurt wolfy's pride
So, he slid down the chimney and oh by Jiminy
In a fire he was fried
Oh oh oh, the three little free little pigs
Just winked and laughed... Ah! Woo!
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
Who is afraid of the big bad wolf
Tra la la la la
Tra la la Tra la la
Tra la la la la la la la la la la!
Who's afraid of the big, big, big, big, big
Bad woooooooooooooooooooolf!

Hey, Mr. Turtle. Where have I heard that song before?

I love pork, and I don't care what color it is as long as it is cooked thoroughly, folks. Never eaten turtle or wolf, however, but I have had mock turtle soup. YUK!

Anyone ever heard of black bird pie?

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing.
Wasn't that a dainty dish
To set before a king.

Wonder what the meaning behind that is?

Well, dear navigator. You used to like eiffel55, I think. Alas, I cannot find one song by them. How about this poem?

on Merel Mirage's Poem Navigator.
Written by Jason Fong

In Jen the grass is like green silk threads,
in Chin the mulberry bows beneath its leaves.
Now while your thoughts are turning home,
my longing heart is already breaking.
Oh the spring wind is a stranger to me,
How does it dare to enter my gauze bed curtain?

That was a Chinese love poem. <smile>

SWEET LEILANI
--------------------
Written by Harry Owens
Sung by Bing Crosby and Dennis Pavao
----------------------------------------------
Sweet Leilani, Heavenly Flower
Nature fashioned roses kissed with dew
And then she placed them in a bower
It was the start of you.

Sweet Leilani, Heavenly Flower
I dreamed of paradise for two.
You are my paradise completed.
You are my dream come true.

Sweet Leilani, Heavenly Flower
Tropic skies are jealous as they shine
I think they're jealous of your blue eyes
Jealous because you're mine.

Sweet Leilani, Heavenly flower
I dreamed of paradise for two.
You are my paradise completed.
You are my dream come true.

You are my paradise completed.
You are my dream come true.

Hey, hamburger. I'm singing along to that one, cause I know the melody.

Love this one as well, listeners.

I want to go back to little grass shack
In Kealakekua, Hawaii
I want to be with all the kanes and wahines
That I knew long ago
I can hear the guitars playing
On the beach at Hônaunau
I can hear Hawaiians saying
Komo mai no kâua i ka hale welakahao

It won't be long till my ship will be sailing
Back to Kona
A grand old place
That's always fair to see, you're telling me
I'm just a little Hawaiian and
A homesick island boy
I want to go back to my fish and poi

I want to go back to my little grass shack
In Kealakekua, Hawai
Where the humuhumunukunukuâpuaa
Go swimming by

You're not going to believe this, hamburger and all, but at one time I owned a couple of sarongs and did the hula. Damn, that was fun. Graduated from the toy uke to the tenor uke, however.

Yes, Canada. I can see why those girls doing their dance to pidgen lyrics could be inspiring. Razz

heard this the other day and had to share

Shame And Scandal In The Family
Shawn Elliott

In Trinidad there was a family
With much confusion as you will see
It was a mama and a papa, and a boy who was grown
Who wanted to marry and have a wife of his own

He found a young girl, that suited him nice
And went to his papa to ask his advice
His papa said son, I have to say no
This girl is your sister but your mama don't know

Woe, is me, shame and scandal in the family
Woe, is me, shame and scandal in the family

A week went by and the summer came 'round
And soon the best cook in the island he found
He went to his papa to name the date
But papa shook his head and to him he said
You can't marry this girl, I have to say no
This girl is your sister but your mama don't know

Woe, is me, shame and scandal in the family
Woe, is me, shame and scandal in the family

He went to his mama and covered his head
And told his mama what his papa had said
His mama she laughed, she said go, man, go
Your daddy ain't your daddy, but your daddy don't know

Woe, is me, shame and scandal in the family
Woe, is me, shame and scandal in the family

Such a delightful young man, hamburger, who takes care of his family, all of whom are ill. He deserves a break with those girls wearing leis.

Well, we might as well play the king for Prince Henry:

Night and you
And blue Hawaii
The night is heavenly
And you are heaven to me

Lovely you
And blue Hawaii
With all this loveliness
There should be love

Come with me
While the moon is on the sea,
The night is young
And so are we, so are we

Dreams come true
In blue Hawaii
And mine could all come true
This magic night of nights with you

YO HO (A PIRATE'S LIFE FOR ME)
Lyrics by Xavier Atencio and music by George Bruns
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We extort, we pilfer, we filch, and sack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
Maraud and embezzle, and even high-jack,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We kindle and char, inflame and ignite,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We burn up the city, we're really a fright,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.

We're rascals, scoundrels, villans, and knaves,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We're devils and black sheep, really bad eggs,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
