Sorry that I stretched our studio monitor with B.B.

Here's a poem dedicated to yitwail:

Herman Melville

The Maldive Shark

About the Shark, phlegmatical one,
Pale sot of the Maldive sea
The sleek little pilot-fish, azure and slim,
How alert in attendance be.
From his saw-pit mouth, from his charnel of maw
The have nothing of harm to dread,
But liquidly glide on his ghastly flank
Or before his Gorgonian head;
Or lurk in the port of serrated teeth
In white triple tiers of glittering gates,
And there find a haven when peril's abroad,
An asylum in jaws of the Fates!

They are friends; and friendly they guide him to prey,
Yet never partake of the treat--
Eyes and brains to the dotard lethargic and dull,
Pale ravener of horrible meat.

here's another fine mess Razz

[Spoken:]
Thank you. We'd like to do something for you now.
We haven't heard a girl sing it. And since it's so popular,
we'd like to try and do it for you.
We hope we remember all the words.[]

Oh, the shark has pearly teeth, dear
And he shows them, pearly white
Just a jack knife has Macheath, dear
And he keeps it out of sight

Oh, the shark bites with his teeth, dear
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves though, wears Macheath dear
So there's not, not a trace of red

On a Sunday, Sunday morning
Lies a body, oozin' life
Someone's sneaking 'round the corner
Tell me could it be, could it be, could it be
Mack the Knife?

Oh, what's the next chorus?
To this song, now
This is the one, now
I don't know
But it was a swinging tune
And its a hit tune
So we tried to do Mack The Knife

Ah, Louis Miller
Oh, something about cash
Yeah, Miller, he was spending that trash
And Macheath dear, he spends like a sailor
Tell me, tell me, tell me
Could that boy do, something rash

Oh Bobby Darin, and Louis Armstrong
They made a record, oh but they did
And now Ella, Ella, and her fellas
We're making a wreck, what a wreck
Of Mack The Knife

[Louis Armstrong imitation]
Oh Snookie Taudry, bah bah bah nop do bo de do
bah bah bah nop do bo de do
Just a jack knife has Macheath, dear
And do bo bo bah bah bah nop do bo de do []

So, you've heard it
Yes, we've swung it
And we tried to
Yes, we sung it

You won't recognize it
It's a surprise hit
This tune, called Mack The Knife

And so we leave you, in Berlin town
Yes, we've swung old Mack
We've swung old Mack in town
For the Darin fans,
And for the Louis Armstrong fans, too
We told you look out, look out, look out
Old Macheath's back in town

Love it, Mr. Turtle. As a matter of record, a girl did sing that song. Me! <smile>

Folks, I have never seen Kevin Spacey in a movie where he didn't turn in a stellar performance.

"Another fine mess that you've gotten me into, Stanley."

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

I heard from a friend you'd been messing around
With a cute little thing I'd been dating uptown
Well I don't know if I like that idea much
Well you'd better stay clear I might start acting rough

You out of town guys sure think you're real keen
Think all of us boys here are homespun and green
But that's wrong my friend so get this through your head
We're tough and we're Texan with necks good and red

So it's Ki yi yippie yi yi
You long hairs are sure gonna die
Our American home was clean till you came
And kids still respected the president's name

And the eagle still flew in the sky
Hearts filled with national pride
Then you came along with your drug-crazy songs
Goddamit you're all gonna die

How dare you sit there and drink all our beer
Oh it's made for us workers who sweat spit and swear
The minds of our daughters are poisoned by you
With your communistic politics and them negro blues

Well I'm gonna quit talking and take action now
Run all of you fairies clean out of this town
Oh I'm dog tired of watching you mess up our lives
Spending the summertime naturally high

Runaway
Corrs › Lyrics

Say its true, theres nothing like me and you,
Im not alone, tell me you feel it too,
And I would runaway,
I would runaway, yeah, yeah,
I would runaway,
I would runaway with you,

Cause I have fallen in love,
With you, no never have,
Im never gonna stop fallin in love, with you,

Close the door, lay down upon the floor,
And by candlelight, candlelight make love to me through the night,
Through the night, through the night,
cause I have runaway,
I have runaway, yeah, yeah,
I have runaway, runaway,
I have runaway with you,

cause I have fallen in love, fallen in love,
With you, no never oh, oh,
Im never gonna stop fallin in love, with you, with you,

Ah, Try. Don't run away, cause Diana Krall wants you to stay.

Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You
Love makes me treat you
The way that I do
Gee baby, ain't I good to you

There's nothing in this whole world too good
For a boy so sweet and true
Gee, baby ain't I good to you

Bought you a fur coat for christmas
Diamond ring
Big cadillac car and everything
What makes me treat you
The way that I do
Gee baby, ain't I good to you

She makes a good case, but I think I should…

Breakaway
Artist: Kelly Clarkson

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I'd pray
I could break away

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly.
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky.
Make a wish, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away.
Out of the darkness and into the sun.
But I won't forget all the ones that I love.
I'll take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jetplane
Far away
And break away

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly.
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky.
Make a wish, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away.
Out of the darkness and into the sun.
But I won't forget all the ones that I love.
I'll take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging with revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they will take me
Gotta keep movin on movin on
Fly away
Break away

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly.
Though its not easy to tell you goodbye
Take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away.
Out of the darkness and into the sun.
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance,
Make a change, and break away
Breakaway
Break away

Well, Try. It could be you should attempt this odyssey.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack Lyrics

Artist: Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch Lyrics
Song: I'll Fly Away Lyrics

Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

[Chorus]
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

[Chorus]
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

[Chorus]
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

Clink, Clink, Another Drink

Clink, clink, another drink
Plenty in the cellar when it's gone.
Drink, drink, the glasses clink
Making tinkly music till the dawn is breaking.

Clang, clang, who cares a dang?
What's the difference when you're on a spree?
Over the teeth, behind the gums,
Look out stomach here she comes
Hi! Have another drink on me.

Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle.
Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle.

Trinkle, trinkle, trinkle, trinkle.
Slice of cheese and bite of pickle
Doesn't even cost a nickel
Now to wash it down.

Clink, clink, no more to drink
I had a cellar full, but now its gone.
Drink, drink, the glasses clink
Like the anvil chorus and my head is splitting,
uh, brinking, uh, busting. Oh brother!

Oh, ow, what'll I do now
Pink elephants running after me.
Oh, that stuff is smooth as silk
From now on I'll stick to milk.
Nothing else to drink for me.

PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal PUFF,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.

OH PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on PUFF's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whenever they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when PUFF roared out his name

OH, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And PUFF that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
PUFF no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, PUFF could not be brave,
So PUFF that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave.

Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

i got so exited when i found some 'spike jones' lyrics , that i hit the 'submit' key rather than 'preview' !
i have to admit that ever since i heard the first spike jones tune ( Smile Question )
i have been "mesmerized" by him .
i have some of his records - total of only about 40 songs ! - , and when i feel particularly good or blue or whatever , i entertain mrs h with spike's "music" - she's suffered in silence for 50 years and never complained about my taste in music .
probably heard spike in the late 40's on AFN(american forces network in germany , at the same time i heard louis armstrong's 'blueberry hill' - another one of my favourites ).
drums , whistles , pistols ...

Hey, Texas. Thanks for the dragon song. Know that one for sure.

And, folks, if you want to spike a drink, let's listen to that Jones man:

Cocktails For Two

Oh what delight to be given the right
To be carefree and gay once again
No longer slinking, respectfully drinking
Like civilized ladies and men
No longer need we miss
A charming scene like this

In some secluded rendez-vous
That overlooks the avenue
With someone sharing a delightful chat
Of this and that with cocktails for two
As we enjoy a cigarette
To some exquisite chansonette
Two hands are sure to slyly meet beneath
The serviette with cocktails for two

My head may go reeling
But my heart will be obedient
With intoxicating kisses
For the principal ingredient

Most any afternoon at five
We'll be so glad we're both alive
Then maybe fortune will complete a plan
That all began with cocktails for two

Most any afternoon at five
Monday to Sunday at five
We'll be so glad we're both alive
We'll be so glad we're alive
Then maybe fortune will complete a plan
That all began with cocktails for...
Two (hic), two (hic, hic), two-oo-oo (hic)

Good early morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

It seems that edgar and hamburger spent the evening discussing tapes and vinyls and S.J. Strangely, I woke up this morning with this song on my mind:

Sylvia's Mother
Sylvia's mother said, "Sylvia's busy
Too busy to come, to the phone"
Sylvia's mother said, "Sylvia's trying
To start a new life of her own"
Sylvia's mother said, "Sylvia's happy
So why don't you leave her alone?"
And the operator said "Forty cents more, for the next three minutes..."
Please Missus Avery I, just gotta talk to her
Please, I'll only keep her a while
Please Missus Avery I, just gotta tell her
Goodbye

Sylvia's mother said, "Sylvia's packing
She's gonna be leaving today"
Sylvia's mother said, "Sylvia's marrying
A fella down Galveston way"
Sylvia's mother said, "Please don't say nothing
To make her start crying, and stay"
And the operator said "Forty cents more, for the next three minutes..."

Please Missus Avery I, just gotta talk to her
Please, I'll only keep her a while
Please Missus Avery I, just gotta tell her
Goodbye

Sylvia's mother said, "Sylvia's hurrying
She's catching the nine o'clock train"
Sylvia's mother said, "Bring your umbrella
'Cause Sylvia's starting to rain"
Sylvia's mother said, "Thank you for calling
And sir, won't you call back again"
And the operator said "Forty cents more, for the next three minutes..."

Please Missus Avery I, just gotta talk to her
Please, I'll only keep her a while
Please Missus Avery I, just gotta tell her
Goodbye

Good morning Letty, I would like to make a similar contribution from downunder.

Mother said:

Mother said, don't leave me
There are monsters at the door
I put on all my armour
But I couldn't find my sword
But there'll always be tomorrow
Just you wait and see
If they come to take you prisoner
I'll be there to set you free

Mother said, I'm grown up
In a Sunday shirt and tie
As long as I can see you
Can I hold you when I cry
There'll always be tomorrow
I'll be so big and strong
I'll sleep with all the lights out
Not afraid of anyone

I need you to stay
I need you to stay
I need you
I need you

Mother said she's sleeping
So I climbed back into bed
But the monsters took her prisoner
That's all that father said
So I thought about tomorrow
And I learned to be alone
Making friends with shadows
As they moved around my home

Mother never leaves me
I can always see her smile

I sit here in the evening
To talk to her awhile
There'll always be tomorrow
Just you wait and see
I know that any moment
She will come to set me free

I need you to stay
I need you to stay
I need you
I need you

I need you to stay
I need you to stay
I need you
I need you

Well, there's our Dutchy, folks. Hey, honey, welcome back to our small studio.

That is a sad song. Was that the father's way of saying, "Mother's gone"?

My word, folks, I do believe that I would have chosen something besides a monster to explain; however, children do like to think love conquers all.

A funny poem to beckon the day:

Another Monster Poem

If you're a small monster, you should know about people
It's just that they're silly, and not that they're evil
They may point right at you, they may shout "What's that!"
They may set upon you with dogs, bats and cats
They may jump on chairs and wiggle their fingers
Or call the police or throw up their dinners
They may dance around like their feet are too hot
Or fetch the flyswatter and give you a swat
It's just that they're startled, don't know what to do
They're never seen anything quite like a You
You know that to people you must look quite strange
Their skin's all one colour (though they come in a range)
They've only got fur in one or two places
And all of their noses are right on their faces
They don't have your feathers, they don't have your fins
They've got one row of teeth so no snaggley grins
They're ears don't fold up and there's only two eyes
(So sneaking behind them can lead to surprise)
So you must consider if they see you there
With your eyes like four suns and your legs like a chair
With your wings all stretched out and covered with spots
With your web feet that squeak like a nose full of snot --
Well, they may shout and scream, they may act like they're goosed
It's only because you've not been introduced

Jet Lag

by Nazareth

I'm goin' back to New York city
Times square sure will be shinin' bright
I know it sure looks pretty
But I don't go down every night.

I'm gonna take in Memphis
You know the one down in Tennessee
And if you wanna boogie
Now that's the place to be.

Sittin' in a bar in Macon
Drinkin' something called Rebel Yells
When I thought I heard someone ringing
I guess she's a southern bell.

We just cut out of El Paso
It just fries there in that desert sun
And if you've ever been down there man
Then you know why we run.

I got jet lag
And livin' out an overnight bag
Time changes every day
They do things a different way
Back in the U.S.A.

Tryin' hard to make a phone call
"Long distance over seas"
"Yes ma'am I did say Scotland"
"Could you spell that again for me please"

You know that it just blew my mind
I'd love to go back there next trip
I sure hope we get some time.

Driving down a Detroit freeway
Just lookin' at those concrete walls
Hey but it's a good town to rock'n'roll in
"What do you mean the police closed the god damned hall?"

Flyin' home tomorrow
To be there's gonna be just great
And after some time with my lady
I'm gonna be back to rock'n'roll in the States.
