i was hesitant to post my thursday song given the events of this week and the subject matter revealed in the lyrics, but music was one of cav's passions, amd this is a good song, so here goes

from the band death cab for cutie

Styrofoam Plates

There's a saltwater film on the jar of your ashes; I threw them to the sea,
but a gust blew them backwards and the sting in my eyes
that you then inflicted was par for the course just as when you were living.
It's no stretch to say you were not quite a father
but the donor of seeds to a poor, single mother that would raise us alone.
We never saw the money that went down your throat
through the hole in your belly.

Thirteen years old in the subsurbs of Denver,
standing in line for Thanksgiving dinner at the Catholic church.
The servers wore crosses to shield from the sufferance plaguing the others.
Styrofoam plates, cafeteria tables,
charity reeks of cheap wine and pity and I'm thinking of you,
I do every year when we count all our blessings
and wonder what we're doing here.

You're a disgrace to the concept of family.
The priest won't divulge that fact in his homily
and I'll stand up and scream if in the mourning remain quiet,
you can deck out a lie in a suit.
But I won't buy it.
I won't join the procession that's speaking their peace,
using five dollar words while praising his integrity.
Just 'cause he's gone, it doesn't change that fact:
he was bastard in life, thus a bastard in death.

it is a thursday song, the clue is in the second verse

A Good Day to All:

I've seen all of the movies EOE has listed at least several times with the exception of "Ship of Fools" which I loved at the time, and am looking forward to seeing again this afternoon. I hope it holds up as well as it did 40 years ago (yikes, 40 years ago?)

And, this listener agrees with EOE's viewpoint on the Sean Connery story. There are two sides to every story.

Now, for the celebrities of the day:

1786 Wilhelm Grimm, folklorist and coauthor of Grimm's Fairy Tales (Hanau, Germany; died 1859)
1836 Winslow Homer, painter (Boston, MA; died 1910)
1874 Honus Wagner, baseball player (Carnegie, PA; died 1955)
1885 Chester Nimitz, Pacific commander in WWII (Fredericksburg, TX; died 1966)
1921 Abe Vigoda, actor (New York, NY)
1922 Steven Hill, actor (Seattle, WA)
1932 Michel Legrand, composer/conductor (Paris, France)
1935 Renata Scotto, opera singer (Savona, Italy)
1938 James Farentino, actor (Brooklyn, NY) ]
1945 Barry Bostwick, actor (San Mateo, CA)
1947 Edward James Olmos, actor (East Los Angeles, CA)
1955 Steve Jobs, Apple Computer executive (California)
1956 Paula Zahn, TV anchor (Naperville, IL)

No doubts about those brothers being grim.

Good Morning, WA2K radio listeners and staff.

Speaking of Grimm, some of their gremlins are lurking about in our machinery. Back later with comments.

You know, folks, Sean Connery was and is one of my favorite actors. I was especially taken with Finding Forester, and whether the news item is true or not, he will always be a superb performer.

Listeners, have you ever seen anyone as prolific as edgar and dj? Both are a literal repository of songs with meaning. dj, I think I understand your Thursday reference in that odd, but moving song. The Christian church observes Maundy Thursday as part of the prelude to Easter.

Raggedy, once again you have provided us with those special natal days in filmdom and music. Thank you, oh noble researcher. I do believe that I recall a painting by Winslow called The Gulf Stream. Very, very powerful in its import.

eoe, Peter O'Toole gave the performance of his life in Lawerence of Arabia. I has always been curious about D.H. Lawerence, as I loved his writing.

Where is that lovely Montana with our coffee? I suspect she has her hands full with her growing garden, which is art in and of itself.

Well, Francis, if you have read The Rockinghorse Winner, you would be the wiser for it. Interesting man, killed in a motorcycle accident and just as Patton, who survived war and died in a most unorthodox manner, it does make one wonder.

Sacre bleu, folks. It does appear that I have my Lawerences confused, and thanks to our researchers, Dys and Raggedy, I must now retract.

Well, Letty can't be expected to know everything. I just found out that Michel LaGrand was a jazz artist. duh.

I was trying to find the lyrics to a song that I remembered about Mimi and a cabaret.

Embarrassed

Wow! Thanks, dys. I do believe that you rival Setanta in the history department.

Still couldn't find the lyrics to Mimi, folks. Sooooooooo, this cabaret will have to do.

Aside to Francis. D.H. Lawerence's Rockinghorse Winner is still a must read, whether it's in Arabic, French, or English. Razz

what good is sitting alone
In your room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Come to the cabaret.
Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
Time for a holiday.
Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Come to the cabaret.
Come taste the wine,
Come hear the band.
Come blow a horn,
Start celebrating;
Right this way,
Your table's waiting.

No use permitting
Some prophet of doom
To wipe every smile away.
Come hear the music play.
Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Come to the cabaret!

I used to have a girlfriend
Known as elsie,
With whom I shared
Four sordid rooms in chelsea
She wasn't what you'd call
A blushing flower...
As a matter of fact
She rented by the hour.

The day she died the neighbors
Came to snicker:
Well, that's what comes
From too much pills and liquor.
But when I saw her laid out like a queen,
She was the happiest... corpse...
I'd ever seen.

I think of elsie to this very day.
I remember how she'd turn to me and say:
What good is sitting alone
In you room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Come to the cabaret.

Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
Time for a holiday.
Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Come to the cabaret.

And as for me,
I made my mind up, back in chelsea,
When I go, I'm going like elsie.

Start by admitting,
From cradle to tomb
Isn't that a long a stay.
Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Only a cabarert, old chum
And I love a cabaret.

Wonder whatever happened to Joel Grey?

quick before I melt, listeners. I saw MC Hammer do the most fantastic version of "Can't Touch This" behind a commercial. Mind boggling choreography.

Can't touch this (x2)
Can't touch this (oh-oh oh oh oh-oh-oh) (x2)

My-my-my-my music hits me so hard makes me say oh my Lord
Thank you for blessing me with a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet
It feels good when you know you're down
A superdope homeboy from the Oaktown
And I'm known as such
And this is a beat uh u can't touch

I told you homeboy u can't touch this
Yeah that's how we're livin' and you know u can't touch this
Look in my eyes man u can't touch this
You know let me bust the funky lyrics u can't touch this

Fresh new kicks and pants
You got it like that now you know you wanna dance
So move out of your seat
And get a fly girl and catch this beat
While it's rollin' hold on pump a little bit
And let me know it's going on like that like that
Cold on a mission so pull on back
Let 'em know that you're too much
And this is a beat uh u can't touch

Yo I told you u can't touch this
Why you standing there man u can't touch this
Yo sound the bells school is in sucker u can't touch this

Give me a song or rhythm
Making 'em sweat that's what I'm giving 'em
Now they know when you talk about the Hammer
You talk about a show that's hyped and tight
Singers are sweatin' so pass them a mic
Or a tape to learn what it's gonna take
And now he's gonna burn
The charts legit either work hard
Or you might as well quit

That's word because you know
U can't touch this (oh-oh oh oh-oh-oh) (x2)
Break it down
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh oh-oh) (x4)
Stop Hammer time

Go with the flow in a spin if you can't move to this
Then you probably are dead
So wave your hands in the air
Bust throught the moves run your fingers through your hair
This is it for a winner
Dance to this and you're gonna get thinner
Move slide your rump
Just for a minute let's all do the bump
Bump bump bump yeah

U can't touch this
Look man u can't touch this
You'll probably get hyped boy
'Cause you know you can't u can't touch this
Ring the bell school's back in break it down
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) (x4)
Stop Hammer time
(Oh-oh oh oh oh-oh-oh) (x2)
(Oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh)
(Oh-oh oh oh oh-oh-oh) u can't touch this (x3)
(Oh-oh oh oh oh-oh-oh) break it down
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) (x2)
Stop Hammer time

Every time you see me that Hammer's just so hype
I'm dope on the floor and I'm magic on the mic
Now why would I ever stop doing this
With others makin' records that just don't hit
I toured around the world from London to the BAY
It's Hammer go Hammer
mc hammer yo hammer and the rest can go and play

U can't touch this (oh-oh oh oh oh-oh-oh) (x2)
U can't touch this (oh-oh oh-oh-oh)
Yeah u can't touch this
I told you u can't touch this (oh-oh oh-oh-oh)
Too hype can't touch this
Get me outta here u can't touch this
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

I'm not certain about The Wizard, eoe, but I saw the movie Cabaret with Liza, Michael York, etc. I think Joel was an odd succubus and the stage manager. Will have to check that out.

also, Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World while living at the Ghost Ranch (Taos new Mexico) with Lawrence and his references to the use of "soma" was actually the common new mexico "peyote" of which Aldous and Lawrence frequently partook.

I cannot believe you actually found lyrics to 'Can't Touch This'. What a hoot!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

eoe, MC Hammer was the only rap artist that I ever understood.

As far as I'm concerned, he's still the BEST!

Listeners and staff, I have invited Cyracuz of Norway to become a part of our virtual radio station. He is a poet and a philosopher:

Title: Resonance

I seek answers
But I ask no questions
I seek truth
But reveal no lies
I seek to endure
Though I will surely perish

But this I seek above all else
Put away all modest requests
To sum it up behind silky veils of good old fashion romance:
Resonance to all emotions that within me dwell

by Cyracuz

Lovely, is it not?

You must give Hammer kudos for paying the original artists of the music he sampled. Most rap artists just steal the music but the Isley Bros., James Brown, Rick James, all were paid by Hammer.
Unfortunately, he also squandered away a very large fortune on, amongst other things, a huge entourage and countless hangers-on, basking in the glow of Hammertime.
Go figure?
