They nearly cut "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"? Why?

I'm not certain, Arthur, but perhaps it had to do with the fact that it didn't quite fit with the rest of the music. I will try and check it out, however.

Please do. I would like to know what the thinking was. The song pretty much defines the film, at least for me. It's the first thing I think of when I hear "The Wizard of Oz".
I'll have to read the book sometime, too.

Letty, first of all, thanks for taking the time to track down some information about that for me.
Second, my browser won't let me access the site! Argh! Can I bother someone to post what it says?

Well, let me try and summarize the main ideas for Arthur and our listeners. because the site was aborted for some reason.

First, the song was almost cut because many of the top dogs decided the movie was too long already yet. Razz

Second, the rainbow was a subterfuge for Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal policy.

What a great big political world we live in. <smile>

Just made it! First post of the day. Good morning everyone.

Dream Weaver
As recorded by Gary Wright

I've just closed my eyes again
Climbed aboard the dream weaver train
Driver, take away my worries of today
And leave tomorrow behind.

Woo dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Woo dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light.

Fly me high through the starry skies
Or maybe to an astral plane
Cross the highways of fantasy
Help me to forget today's pain.

Woo dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Woo dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light.

Though the dawn may be coming soon
There still may be some time
Fly me away to the bright side of the moon
And meet me on the other side.

Woo dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Woo dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light.

That is what we are here for, Arthur. Our little station does more than play music, dear. <smile>

Well, there is our Try weaving a dream. Thanks, honey. Marvelous song and reminds me of "Riding on that New River Train."

New River Train

I'm riding on that New River Train
I'm riding on that New River Train
That same old train that brought me here
Is gonna carry me away again

Darling you can't love one
Darling you can't love one
You can't love one and have any fun
Oh darling you can't love one

Darling you can't love two
Darling you can't love two
You can't love two and your little heart be true
Oh darling you can't love two

Darling you can't love three
Darling you can't love three
You can't love three and still love me
Oh darling you can't love three

Darling you can't love four
Darling you can't love four
You can't love four and love me anymore
Oh darling you can't love four

etc. Very Happy

Don't Cross The River
As recorded by America

There's a little girl out lyin' on her own
She's got a broken heart
She's not the kind to take you down for long
She knows and plays it smart

And if she's comin', she's showed no mark
She's heard no whistle blowin' from the dark
She feels like leavin' and she don't know why
Without no bridges she's trapped, so I sigh

Don't cross the river if you can't swim the tide
Don't try denyin' livin' on the other side all your life
You were on your own
And if you want you can ride my train
And soon forget the reason that you're leavin'
You'll lose yourself and then sometime
Maybe even save yourself some grievin'

Oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh oh

Don't cross the river if you can't swim the tide
Don't try denyin' livin' on the other side
Don't cross the river if you can't swim the tide

ah, Try. Don't recall that one by America, but I do know this one. Let's play it for our listeners, shall we?

A Horse With No Name

On the first part of the journey,
I was looking at all the life.
There were plants and birds. and rocks and things,
There was sand and hills and rings.
The first thing I met, was a fly with a buzz,
And the sky, with no clouds.
The heat was hot, and the ground was dry,
But the air was full of sound.

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

After two days, in the desert sun,
My skin began to turn red.
After three days, in the desert fun,
I was looking at a river bed.
And the story it told, of a river that flowed,
Made me sad to think it was dead.

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

After nine days, I let the horse run free,
'Cause the desert had turned to sea.
There were plants and birds, and rocks and things,
There was sand and hills and rings.
The ocean is a desert, with its life underground,
And a perfect disguise above.
Under the cities lies, a heart made of ground,
But the humans will give no love.

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.

La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

Great song, that. And speaking of deserts,

Desert Rose
Sting

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams that tie two hearts that will never die
And near the flames
The shadows play in the shape of the mans desire

This desert rose
Whose shadow bears the secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this

And now she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothings as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
The rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Whose shadow bears the secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of hidden hearts and souls
This desert flower
This rare perfurme is the sweet intoxication of love

Love it, Arthur. and as often happens here on our radio, one theme song leads to another. <smile>

Tony Orlando.

Sweet Gypsy Rose.

We were very happy
Well at least I thought we were
Can't somebody tell me
What's got into her
A house, a home, a family
And a man who loves her so
Who'd believe she'd leave us
To join a burlesque show?

Say has anybody seen my
Sweet Gypsy Rose?
Here's her picture when she was my
Sweet Mary Jo
Now she's got rings on her fingers
And bells on her toes
Say has anybody seen my
Sweet gypsy Rose?

Oh, I know when Mary Jo's been dancin'
Here in New Orleans
In this smoke-filled honky-tonk
They call the land of dreams
Whoah, here she comes a-struttin'
In her birthday clothes
Say has anybody seen my
Sweet gypsy Rose?

Whoah, baby, baby,
Won'tcha come home
Say, we all miss ya
And every night we kiss your picture

Whoiah Rose, one night the lights go dim,
And the crowd goes home
That's the day you wake up
And you find you're all alone
So let's say goodbye to Gypsy
Hello Mary Jo
Say has anybody seen my
Sweet Gypsy Rose

(Instrumental)

So take those rings off your fingers
And bells off your toes
Say has anybody seen my
Now you know just what I mean by
Has anybody seen my Sweet Gypsy Rose

Don't Cry Daddy
As recorded by Elvis Presley

Today I stumbled from my bed
With thunder crashing in my head
My pillow still wet, from last night's tears
And as I think of giving up
A voice inside my coffee cup
Kept crying out, ringing in my ears.

Don't cry daddy
Daddy please don't cry
Daddy you still got me and little Tommy
Together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy ride us on your back again
Oh daddy please don't cry.

Why are children always first
To feel the pain and hurt the worst
It's true but somehow, it just don't seem right
'Cause ev'ry time I cry I know
It hurts my little children so
I wonder, will it be the same tonight.

Don't cry daddy
Daddy please don't cry
Daddy you still got me and little Tommy
Together we'll find a brand new mommy
Daddy, daddy, please laugh again
Daddy ride us on your back again
Oh daddy please don't cry.

Oh daddy, please don't cry.

Well, folks. It's tear time again, but that's all right, 'cause often the tears are better than fights.

Yes, Try. A very sad one to be followed by another:

Wayne Newton.
Daddy don't you walk so fast.

The love between the two of us was dying
And it got so bad I knew I had to leave
But halfway down that highway when I turned around I saw
My little daughter running after me
Crying

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

Now, it broke my heart to tell my little daughter
That her daddy had to run to catch a train
She had no way of knowin' I was leavin' home for good
I turned around and there she was again
As she said to me

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

If only for the sake of my sweet daughter
I just had to turn back home right there and then
And try to start a new life with the mother of my child
I couldn't bear to hear those words again
She cried and said

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
(My daughter cried)
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Oh, daddy, don't you walk so fast

one by Roy Orbison Crying or Very sad

I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello"
Aww you wished me well, you couldn't tell

That I'd been cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you
Then you said "so long". left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying, crying cry-i-ing
It's hard to understand but the touch of your hand
Can start me crying

I thought that I was over you but it's tru-ue, so true
I love you even more than I did before but darling what can I do-o-o-o
For you don't love me and I'll always be

Cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you
Yes, now you're gone and from this moment on
I'll be crying, crying, crying, cry-i-i-ing
Yeah crying, crying, o-o-o-o-ver you

there's insurgents on the rooftops

ARTIST: Squeeze
TITLE: Cool for Cats
Lyrics

The Indians send signals
From the rocks above the pass
The cowboys take positions
In the bushes and the grass
The squaw is with the Corporal
She is tied against the tree
She doesn't mind the language
It's the beating she don't need
She lets loose all the horses
When the Corporal is asleep
And he wakes to find the fire's dead
And arrows in his hats
And Davy Crockett rides around
And says it's cool for cats
It's cool for cats - Cool for cats

The Sweeney's doing ninety
'Cause they've got the word to go
They get a gang of villains
In a shed up at Heathrow
They're counting out the fivers
When the hand cuffs lock again
In and out of Wandsworth
With the numbers on their names
It's funny how their missus
Always look the bleeding same
And meanwhile at the station
There's a couple of likely lads
Who swear like how's your father
And they're very cool for cats
They're cool for cats - Cool for cats

To change the mood a little
I've been posing down the pub
On seeing my reflection
I'm looking slightly rough
I fancy this, I fancy that
I wanna be so flash
I give a little muscle
And I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash
And by the time I'm sober
I've forgotten what I've had
And ev'rybody tells me that
It's cool to be a cat
Cool for cats - Cool for cats

Shake up at the disco
And I think I've got a pull
I ask her lots of questions
As she hangs on to the wall
I kiss her for the first time
And then I take her home
I'm invited in for coffee
And I give the dog a bone
She likes to go to discos
But she's never on her own
I said I'll see you later
And I give her some old chat
But it's not like that on the TV
When it's cool for cats
It's cool for cats - Cool for cats

Ah, Yit, that is a sad one. Enough to make a turtle cry, honey.

Well, my goodness. There's London. Hey, John. Welcome back. Don't know Squeeze, but the lyrics are the right and cool combination for an oak man. Thanks.

Everybody's Everything
As recorded by Santana

Seems like everybody's waitin' for a new change to come around
(Come around, come around, come around)
Waitin' for the day when the king, queen of shows singing round
(Singing round, singing round, singing round)
Singing round, singing round for everyone
Yeah do it

You can understand everything's to share
Let your spirit dance brothers, everywhere
Let your head be free, turn the wisdom key
Find it naturally, see you're lucky to be.
Dig this sound, and spin around and round and round

Yeah if you're holding something baby, lay it down
(Lay it down, lay it down, lay it down)
Don't you know honey maybe, you're like my childless hometown
(This whole town, this whole town, this whole town)
Sing it now, time for you to all get down
Yeah do it

Get ready, oo, get ready, oo, get ready, oo, get ready, oo
Dig this sound, spinnin' round and round and round
Yeah do it

Hey, Try. I like Santana, but don't know that one. Let's follow the leader.

All the Love of the Universe
Oo, oo, do...
New thoughts
Will purify my mind
and clean my body
New lives
will fall together like an endless story

All the love of the universe
will be shared by all that's living

And I don't really care
about tomorrow
Today
is all I really need to find the answers

I'll find the constant flow
of all the harmony

Everybody needs a helpin' hand
