Duane Eddy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Duane Eddy (born April 26, 1938), the most successful and influential instrumentalist in Rock and Roll history, is the man who added a new term to the American music dictionary - TWANG. The sound he created was easily identifiable and uniquely his own. Combining strong, dramatic, single-note melodies, along with bending of the low strings, he produced a signature sound that was unlike anything yet heard - the sound that would be featured on an unprecedented string of thirty-four chart singles and sales of over 100 million worldwide.

In the early days of Rock and Roll, the notion of the lead guitarist as the charismatic figure in the spotlight was completely novel. Duane Eddy moved the guitar player front and center. Quiet and unassuming offstage, he cut an indelible figure with an electric guitar in his hands. It was a classic pose that defined the cool iconography of what it means to be a Rock and Roller.

Born in Corning, New York, in 1938, he began playing at age five, emulating his cowboy hero, Gene Autry. The family moved west to Phoenix, Arizona, in the early 1950s, where Duane met his longtime partner, co-writer and producer, Lee Hazlewood. Together, they created a successful formula based upon Duane's unique approach to his instrument, and Lee's experimental vision in the recording studio, and have been referred to as "one of the greatest hit-making machines of the Rock and Roll era."

Elements of country, blues, jazz and Gospel infused his instrumentals. They had evocative titles like, Rebel Rouser, Forty Miles of Bad Road, Cannonball, The Lonely One, Shazam, and Some Kinda Earthquake. They were filled with rebel yells and brilliant sax breaks. The worldwide popularity of these records, beginning with Moovin' and Groovin' in 1958, broke open the doors for Rock and Roll instrumental music. His band, The Rebels, featured musicians who were to become some of the world's best-known session players. Sax players Steve Douglas and Jim Horn, and pianist Larry Knechtel, have been heard on hundreds of hit records, becoming members of the famous "Wrecking Crew" of Phil Spector in the 1960s, and touring with a very elite group of artists through the years.

The following decade was a blur of touring and recording, with an astonishing amount of work being released. Duane constantly broke new ground, producing over 25 albums spanning a broad range of themes. At the height of the Rock and Roll era, he recorded an album of completely acoustic music, Songs Of Our Heritage, the first "unplugged" project, so to speak. There were orchestral projects, Big Band sounds of the 1940s, and an album of songs written by Bob Dylan, who, years later, would write, "For sure my lyrics had struck nerves that had never been struck before, but if my songs were just about the words, then what was Duane Eddy, the great rock-and-roll guitarist, doing recording an album full of instrumental melodies of my songs?"

The 1970s were equally busy for Duane. He produced album projects for Phil Everly and Waylon Jennings. A collaboration with hit songwriter Tony Macaulay led to a worldwide top ten record, Play Me Like You Play Your Guitar. The single record, You Are My Sunshine, featuring Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, hit the country charts in 1977.

An amazing group of legendary players hit the road in early 1983, showing up at small, intimate clubs. Friends of Duane's, some old, some new, had put this band together wanting to give the fans a chance to hear him in a unique setting - Don Randi on keyboards, Hal Blaine on drums, Steve Douglas on sax, and to Duane's pleasant surprise, Ry Cooder on guitar. Needless to say, this group rocked, and the lines around the blocks and the superb reviews said it all. Duane Eddy was back, and a whole new generation of fans was listening.

In 1986, Duane recorded with Art of Noise, a collaboration that brought a new twist to his 1960 best seller, Peter Gunn. The song was an instant Top Ten hit around the world, ranking #1 on Rolling Stone Magazine's dance chart for six weeks that summer. As further confirmation of it's success, Peter Gunn won The Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental of 1986.

The following year, a new album, the self-titled, Duane Eddy, was released on Capitol. As a tribute to his influence and inspiration to so many young players, a crowd of unbelievable talent came along to be a part of this project. Tracks were produced by Paul McCartney, Jeff Lynne, Ry Cooder, Art of Noise, and Duane. The "band" included John Fogerty, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ry Cooder, James Burton, David Lindley, Steve Cropper, and original Rebels, Larry Knechtel and Jim Horn.

In the spring of 1994, Duane Eddy's place in our musical history was etched in stone at his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, alongside fellow artists Elton John, Rod Stewart, John Lennon, Bob Marley and The Grateful Dead. Later that year, film soundtracks introduced Duane Eddy's music to millions as they watched Forrest Gump being chased by a pickup truck full of rednecks, running into his football career to the sound of Rebel Rouser. Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers used The Trembler, a track written by Duane and Ravi Shankar, to help create a spine-chilling scene set against a violent thunderstorm in the desert.

In more recent film work, Duane joined Academy Award winning composer Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack of Broken Arrow, starring John Travolta. Duane's unique guitar sound was first choice to be the "voice" for the villain's theme. To quote Mr. Zimmer, "I always thought that Duane's style was being ripped off by the spaghetti westerns. This time I got the real thing". The appeal of this theme, a dark moody piece, caused it to be used, once again, in an altogether different kind of film - director Wes Craven's incredibly successful Scream 2.

2004 began on a high note with the introduction of the new Gibson Duane Eddy Signature Model guitar, built to Duane's specifications by the Gibson Custom Art and Historic Division. Later that year, he was presented with the Guitar Player Magazine "Legend Award, having the distinction of being only the second recipient, the first having been presented to Duane's own guitar hero, the brilliant Les Paul.

Jet Li
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jet Li (Traditional Chinese: 李連杰; Simplified Chinese: 李连杰; Hanyu Pinyin: Lǐ Liánjié; Wade-Giles: Li Lien-chieh; Cantonese: Ley5 Lin4 Git6; born April 26, 1963) is a Chinese martial artist and film actor.

Jet Li (as he would later be known) was born in Beijing, China. His father died when he was two and his mother who was very protective sent him to the Wushu academy at age 8.

Career

As an athlete

Jet Li participated in the sport of Wushu in the(non-sparring) event. He began his martial arts career as a member of the Beijing Wushu team, an athletic group organized to perform martial arts during the All China Games. As a member of the team, he received martial arts training and went on to win 15 gold medals and one silver medal in Chinese wushu championships:

* 1974 - Youth National Athletic Competition: broadsword form gold medal, optional empty-hand form gold medal, all-round gold medal;

* 1975 - Third Chinese Wushu Championships: long fist form gold medal, spear form silver medal;

* 1977 - National Wushu Competition: long-fist form gold medal, broadsword form gold medal;

* 1978 - National Wushu Competition: long-fist form gold medal, optional empty-hand form gold medal, broadsword form gold medal, all-round gold medal;

* 1979 - Fourth Chinese Wushu Championships: long-fist form gold medal, optional empty-hand form gold medal, broadsword form gold medal, sparring form gold medal, all-round gold medal.

All his optional empty-hand form medals were won with a form called fanzi yingzhuaquan (翻子鷹爪拳, Fanzi eagle claw). His success led to the PRC declaring Jet Li to be a "National Treasure."

As an actor

The fame gained by his sports winnings led to a career as a martial arts film star, beginning in mainland China and then continuing into Hong Kong. After his success in Hong Kong, Jet Li established a presence in American films, beginning with his portrayal of a villain in Lethal Weapon 4. His first lead role in a Hollywood movie was in Romeo Must Die.

Some of his more famous Chinese films include:

* the Shaolin Temple series (1, 2 and 3), which are considered to be the films which sparked the rebirth of the real Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng, China.
* the Once Upon a Time in China series (Chinese title: Wong Fei Hung), about the legendary Chinese folk hero;
* Fist of Legend (Chinese title: Jing Wu Ying Xiong), a remake of Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection (Jing Wu Men in Chinese, named after the martial arts school);
* the Fong Sai-Yuk films, about another Chinese folk hero. As one might expect from a martial artist of his caliber, he performs most of his own stunts.

Jet Li starred in the 1995 movie, Shu dan long wei, known in English as "Courage of a Mouse and Power of a Dragon". The movie, known in the US as either High Risk or Meltdown, portrays Jet Li as a cop who becomes disillusioned after his wife is murdered by crimelords. Along the way, he pairs up with a wacky sell-out actor, Frankie (played by Jacky Cheung), and proceeds to engage in a series of violent battles in a high-rise building.

In July 2001, Jet Li and Jackie Chan agreed to produce and star in an action movie which was to be released in 2002 or 2003, but there has since been no news of their collaboration. In 2002, the film Hero was released in the US market. This film was both commercial and a critical success.

Li took a big risk with the 2005 action drama, Unleashed (a.k.a. Danny the Dog) where he portrays an adult with the mentality of a child who has been raised like an animal. A somber film with more depth than had been previously seen in Li's films, it co-starred dramatic actors, Bob Hoskins and Morgan Freeman.

According to Shenzhen Daily newspaper, Jet Li has announced his retirement from martial arts films after the film Fearless, known as Huo Yuanjia in Chinese, named after the real-life founder of Jing Wu Men who reportedly defeated foreign boxers and Japanese martial artists in publicized events at a time when China's power was seen as eroding. Together with the film Fist of Legend, Li has portrayed both Chen Zhen, the fictional student and avenger of Huo Yuanjia, as well as Huo Yuanjia himself.

"I stepped into the martial arts movie market when I was only 16. I think I have proved my ability in this field and it won't make sense for me to continue for another five or 10 years. Huo Yuanjia is a conclusion to my life as a martial arts star." - Jet Li

Even with the martial arts genre fading in Li's career, action movies will still flow in his direction. His new thriller, Rogue, will begin principal photography in the spring of 2006, re-teaming Jet Li with actor Jason Statham and action choreographer Corey Yuen.

Personal life

In 1987 Jet Li married Beijing Wushu Team member and Shaolin Temple series co-star Huang Qiuyan, with whom he had two children. They divorced in 1990. Since 1999, he has been married to Nina Li Chi (born Li Zhi), a Shanghai-born, Hong Kong-based actress. He has two children with her as well.

Jet Li was in the Maldives when the tsunami hit during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. He suffered a minor foot injury, caused by a piece of floating furniture, while he was guiding his daughter and himself to safety.

Well, folks. We know that our hawkman is finished when he apprises us of origins.

I knew that most of our states were named after amerinds, listeners, but was intrigued with the tribes.

I, for one, knew very few of the celebs today, and I was shocked that Carol Burnett had a daughter that died so young, so I went looking and found her picture:

For Carrie and all in bereavement:

A Shadow On My Shoulder
by Brenda Penepent
There's a shadow on my shoulder
That steals parts of my soul;
Bit by bit it takes my energy.
Never leaving me alone.
Oh, at first I tried to fight it.
I resisted it for years
Until the emptiness inside me
drove me crazy with my fears.
At times, I have embraced it;
For the comfort of my grief
Had become so familiar
I could not envision a release.
Like a cloud of empty promises
It covers me in gray.
Numbing me with sadness.
Draining color from my day.
The shadow of depression
Lurks dark upon my soul.
My wall of pain is standing tall
While I shiver in the cold.

endings and beginnings all around us

sometimes a Disney song is the only answer

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Now I'm in a whole new world with you

Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be

A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
That's where we'll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

The River Song - Donovan

Oh, the waters flow over rock and stone
O'er the waters blow windy wind so cold
Oh, the rivers flow so old
Oh, the rivers flow so old.
O'er the rivers fly stately kingfishers
Through the waters swim stickleback fishes
Oh, the rivers flow so old
Oh, the rivers flow so old.
Oh, the waters flow over rock and stone
Through the waters swim stickleback fishes
Oh, the rivers flow so old
Through the rivers swim so old
Oh, the rivers flow so old.
Ooh

Pointy Toed Shoes - Carl Perkins

Well there's a brand new style goin' 'round
A-hypnotizing cats in town
Living in a walking dream
A pointed toe and that's-a what I mean

I said pointed toes are coming back again
Ah-huh, pointed toes are coming back again
Well, everything's alreet
When I got 'em on my feet
I said the point's coming back again

Well they're made from high colored dye (???)
Long and lean, narrow and keen
Some are brown, some are black
A cat starts a-walking he's a-easy to track

I said the pointed toes are coming back again
Ah-huh, pointed toes are coming back again
Everything's alreet
I got 'em on my feet
I said the points are coming back again
Rock!

Well I'm sharp toes a-high heeled
And buckle on the side
Zip 'em up and lace 'em up
Or any old style
I won't have to worry
Who's stepping on my blues
A keen cutting cat in my pointed toe shoes

I said the pointed toes are coming back again
Ah-huh, pointed toes are coming back again
Everything's alreet
I got 'em on my feet
I said the point's coming back again
Rock!

Sharp toes, I want a pointed shoe
Ah-huh, sharp toes, I want a pointed shoe
Ooh-yeah-yeah, I want a pointed shoe
Ah-huh, sharp toes, I want a pointed shoe
Well everything's alreet
I got 'em on my feet
I said the point's coming back again

Cradle of Love - Johnny Preston

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

Well, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack jumped over the candlestick
He jumped so high up above
He landed in the cradle of love

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

Hi diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
And on the way down she met a turtle dove
Said "Let's go rockin' in the cradle of love"

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To get a pail of water
Jack fell for Jill, gave her a shove
They fell into the cradle of love

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

one of Joni Mitchell's best:

Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, when you're older, must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him,
Take your time, it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

in a related vein, the byrds by way of pete seeger & ecclesiastes

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time of war, a time of peace
A time of love, a time of hate
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time of peace, I swear it's not too late!

Good afternoon, WA2K listeners and contributors.

ehBeth, what would we do with Aladdin's lamp? Probably polish it to make it shine and ignore the genie that from out did climb.

Ah, edgar. Rivers and shoes and cradles of love. Those songs go together. Heavens above!

And our Mr. Turtles with Byrds and the seasons. I love that song for no apparent reason.

Ok, folks. I'll quit with the doggerel.

In honor of our missing member, fealola, I would like to do a song that's in my head today:

My Life by Billy Joel

Got a call from an old friend
We used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
Closed the shop, sold the house
Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A.

I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, and leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
(I never said you had to)
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
(I never said)
I still belong, don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind
But not on my time

They will tell you, you can't sleep alone in a strange place
Then they'll tell you, you can't sleep with somebody else
Ah, but sooner or later you sleep in your own space
Either way it's okay, you wake up with yourself

I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, and leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
(I never said you had to)
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
(Of cirumstance)
I still belong, don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind
But not on my time

I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, and leave me alone

(Keep it to yourself, it's my life.)
(Keep it to yourself, it's my life.)
(Keep it to yourself, it's my life.)
(Keep it to yourself, it's my life.)

That was the time when all us hippies were dropping out and tuning in. <smile>

News that is NOT news, folks:

Senate Panel Says FEMA Is Beyond Repair
AP - 1 hour, 33 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Hurricane Katrina turned FEMA into a "symbol of a bumbling bureaucracy" so far beyond repair that it should be scrapped, senators said Thursday. They called for creation of a new disaster relief agency as the next storm season looms on the horizon. The push to replace the beleaguered agency was the top recommendation of a hefty Senate inquiry that concluded that top officials from New Orleans to Washington failed to adequately prepare for and respond to the deadly storm despite weather forecasts predicting its path through the Gulf Coast.

G'day folks

Thin Lizzy -
The Boy Is Back in Town Lyrics

Guess who just got back today?
Them wild-eyed boys that had been away
Haven't changed, haven't much to say
But man, I still think them cats are crazy

They were asking if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
Told them you were living downtown
Driving all the old men crazy

The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
I said
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town

You know that chick that used to dance a lot
Every night she'd be on the floor shaking what she'd got
Man when I tell you she was cool, she was red hot
I mean she was steaming

And that time over at Johnny's place
Well this chick got up and she slapped Johnny's face
Man we just fell about the place
If that chick don't want to know, forget her

The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
I said
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town

Spread the word around
Guess who's back in town

You spread the word around

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Dino's bar and grill
The drink will flow and blood will spill
And if the boys want to fight, you'd better let them

That jukebox in the corner blasting out my favorite song
The nights are getting warmer, it won't be long
Won't be long till summer comes
Now that the boys are here again

The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
Spread the word around
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boy's are back, the boys are back

The boy's are back in town again
Been hangin' down at Dino's
The boy's are back in town again

Hey, Raggedy. Well, PA, I remember "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe." <smile>

How about a little Frank Zappa, folks:

Artist: Zappa Frank Lyrics
Song: Elvis Has Just Left The Building Lyrics

Elvis has just left the building --
Those are his footprints, right there
Elvis has just left the building --
To climb up that heavenly stair

He gave away Cadillacs once in a while;
Had sex in his underpants,
Yes, he had style!
Bell-bottom jump-suits?
That's them in a pile,
But he don't need'em now,
'Cause he's makin' Jesus smile!

Elvis has just left the building --
Those are his footprints, right there
Elvis has just left the building --
To climb up that heavenly stair

The Angels all love him,
He brings them relief
With droplets of moisture
From his handkerchief!
Cher'bim 'n ser'phim
Whizz over his head --
Jesus, let him come back!
We don't want Elvis dead.

Elvis has just left the building --
Those are his footprints, right there
Elvis has just left the building --
To climb up that heavenly stair

So what if he looks like a wart-hog in heat?
He knows we all love him --
We'll just watch him eat,
So take down the foil
From his hotel retreat,
And bring back The King
For the man in the street!

Elvis has just left the building --
Those are his footprints, right there
Elvis has just left the building --
To climb up that heavenly stair
He's up there with Jesus, in a big purple chair

Razz

Try, I missed your contribution. Welcome back, honey.

Glad to see our boy is back in town.

Another "back" song by Ain't Misbehavin himself:

Lulu's Back In Town
Fats Waller
Al Dubin / Harry Warren

Gotta get my old tuxedo pressed, gotta sew a button on my vest,
'cause tonight I've gotta look my best, Lulu's back in town.

Gotta get a half a buck somewhere, gotta shine my shoes and slick my hair,
gotta get myself a boutonniere, Lulu's back in town.

You can tell all my pets, all my Harlem coquettes,
Mister Otis regrets, that he won't be aroun'.

You can tell the mailman not to call, I ain't comin' home until the fall
and I might not get back home at all... Lulu's back in town.

Beatles › Get Back Lyrics
Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it wouldn't last.
Jojo left his home in tucson, arizona
For some california grass.
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jojo. go home
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jo.

Sweet Loretta martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can

Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Loretta. go home
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Loretta

Your mother's waiting for you
Wearing her high-heel shoes
And her low-neck sweater
Get on home Loretta
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
