A Proposal to Reduce U.S. Troops in Germany

By JAMES DAO

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 — The new supreme commander for American forces in Europe, Gen. James L. Jones, is considering a plan to scale back the presence of American troops in Germany in favor of lighter, more mobile units that could jump from country to country on a moment's notice, according to Congressional officials who were briefed on the proposal. All I can say it's about time.
Have you ever wondered that why that after 57 years and years after the end of the cold war the US maintains a large and costly force in both Germany and Japan. Isn't it time to reduce our forces and have the basic defense of these nations the responsibility of their own armed forces? With support by the US when needed.

That same plan had previously been proposed for Korea. It was felt that the force should be held on the ready rather than in Korea proper. As it is those forces would be exposed should N.Korea Attack. As to the Balkans they are there to maintain the peace. That is not the situation in Germany or Japan.
