What is the female equivalent of a misogynist?

I've been wondering this for ages. Does anybody know what the term is? (Presuming there is one.)

Women-hating men are "misogynists", but man-hating women are... what? "Man-haters" seems to be the only available term. That can't be all, surely.

I've been trying to imagine what the word should be, tracing it back to the Greek.. it should be something like "misoandrist", shouldn't it? If "miso" means "hate" and "gyno" means "woman".. logically the masculine ("andro") would be "miso"-"andrist"?

I can't believe this is so difficult.

"Misanthropist" is the word you are looking for. It literally means "man-hater", although this word is generally taken in the generic "hater of mankind" sense.

A misanthrope hates all people, but its roots suggest that this word could work.

I would never consciously worry about this word, until now that youve brought it up

No, it is still misandrist, with the corresponding noun for the practice, 'misandry'.

Strangely enough, this came from the FAQ at www.askoxford.com. Who knew so many people were curious about it?

If you're going to be hated, it's nice to be hated by someone
properly concerned about her vocabulary.

Seems a bit backwards to me. Wouldn't "hate" and "women" mean hates women?

And who hates men? Kind of can't live without 'em!

Right on, MichaelAllen!

ARTIST: Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe
TITLE: A Hymn to Him
Lyrics

[My Fair Lady]

What in all of Heaven could have prompted her to go
After such a triumph at the ball
What could have depressed her
What could have possessed her
I cannot understand the wretch at all

Women are irrational, that's all there is to that
Their heads are full of cotton, hay and rags
They're nothing but exasperating, irritating, vacillating
Calculating, agitating, maddening, and infuriating hags

Why can't a woman be more like man
Men are so honest, so thoroughly square
Eternally noble, historically fair
Who when you win will always give your back a pat
Why can't a woman be like that

Why does every one do what the others do
Can't a woman learn to use her head
Why do they do everything their mothers do
Why don't they grow up like their father instead

Why can't a woman take after a man
Men are so pleasant, so easy to please
Whenever you're with them you're always at ease
Would you be slighted if I didn't speak for hours?
Of course not
Would you be livid if I had a drink or two?
Nonsense
Would you be wounded if I never sent you flowers?
Never!
Well, why can't a woman be like you

One man in a million may shout a bit
Now and then there's one with slight defects
One perhaps whose truthfulness you doubt a bit
But by in large we are a marvelous sex

Why can't a woman take after a man
Men are so friendly, good natured and kind
A better companion you never will find
If I were hours late for dinner would you bellow?
Of course not
If I forgot your silly birthday would you fuss?
Nonsense
Would you complain if I took out another fellow?
Never!
Why can't a woman be like us

Why can't a woman be more like a man
Men are so decent, such regular chaps
Ready to help you through any mishaps
Ready to buck you up whenever you are glum
Why can't a woman be a chum

Why is thinking something women never do
Why is logic never even tried
Straightening up their hair is all they ever do
Why don't they straighten up the mess that's inside

Why can't a woman behave like a man
If I were a woman who'd been to a ball
Been hailed as a princess by one and by all
Would I start weeping like a bathtub overflowing
Carry on as if my home were in a tree
Would I run off and never tell me where I'm going
Why can't a woman be like me?

I've always liked this Harry Nilsson Classic:

You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
So f**k you
All I want to do
Is have a good time
Now I'm blue
You wanna boogaloo
Run down to Tramps
Have a dance or two--ooh!
You're breaking my heart
You're tearin' it apart
But f**k you
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
Ooh!--ooh!--
You stepped on my ass
You're breaking my glasses too
You wanna drive my car
Buy a lot of stuff
I've had enough
Of you--ooh!
I'm goin' insane
There's no one to blame
So f**k you
You've gotta have your way
There's nothin' left to say
There's nothin' left to do--ooh!
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
So f**k you
You've gotta have your way
There's nothin' left to say
There's nothin' left to do--ooh!
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
But I love you
(Do-do-doots)

Who else do over-educated people hate?

I wonder if there were misomisoists (haters of Japanese soup).

Interesting question. My immediate thought is anyone or anything they can invent a word for. Laughing

nearly correct!
The equivalent is misandrist (a person who hates persons of the male sex), a rare word but seemingly much sought-after. The corresponding noun for the attitude is misandry.

Thanks for all the help.

I'm writing a piece about Valerie Solanas (the militant feminist who shot Andy Warhol in 1968) and I found myself completely abusing the term "man-hater".

So thank you all.
