It depends on the species.

As soon as the larvae hatch, they look for food, and will eat until they become adult caterpillars. The process may take up to two weeks. The total life span of butterflies is about 2-3 months, but they can life up to seven years depending on hybernation as pupae.

After the egg is laid 3-5 days to become a caterpillar. This stage should last from 2-4 weeks. It then enters the pupa stage which can last from days to months. After the pupa stage ends they can live up to 8-9 months
