I'M STUMPED PLEASE HELP.
I may be a mile off with this but the riddle has in it the word "horse" it also has the word " national" and "root"
Englands most famous horse race is the Grand National.
The national's most famous winner ever was a horse called Red Rum who won it three times and came second another twice, so famous was Red Rum that when he died he was buried by the side of the winning post at Aintree. You could say it was where he took root.
Answer could be Red Rum.
