Lájos Kossúth poem - but in HUNGARIAN!

Reply Sun 24 Oct, 2004 05:18 pm
OK, I found this old old poem by one of the Hungarian Revolutionary leaders (as in 1848 Revolution). It is supposedly about him missing home after he was exiled. I would love it if anyone who speaks Hungarian could help with translating at least a teensy bit. 'Tis for my dissertation. And just out of pure curiosity, too. The poem was among the papers of a friend's father, who is a known junkie and people bring him stuff that he stores. Some interesting stuff among the heaps. Anyone out there able to help?

Nope, sorry. First of all, I wouldnt trust none of the rudimentary Hungarian I might still remember if I really tried and used a very good dictionary; second, I'm afraid I simply can't decipher the handwriting! Fascinating piece, though.

Do you need the translation quickly?

After 11/4th I can hand the poem over to friends, native Hungarians, translators with the UN in Vienna.

oh no, not at all, ul. it can surely wait for a week or two, i am mostly curious what the poem is about - i was told about the gist of it before, but if anyone would be able to spare a minute on a few verses, i would absolutely love that. is the text legible enough you think? not sure if i can come up with a higher resolution...

I will contact them.

I can't read Hungarian ( actally a shame not being able to read your neighbors' language), but I can recognise letters. I think for an Hugarian it should work.

Hi,I'm from Budapest,Hungary. The poem is about being homesick.Kossuth died as an emmigrant in Italy because he had to leave Hungary after the collapse of the revolution. If you wish,I can translate it to you but it'll probably be too raw.My Hungarian is better.:-)
