Lady Gaga began with a "Protest Anthem"

I enjoyed the half time show. Lady Gaga began with "This Land is Your Land," written by Woody Guthrie. This morning I saw two articles describing the song as a "protest anthem." While it is so that Woody wrote some protest songs, I never considered this one to be among them. It celebrates this land and is all inclusive. Barry Goldwater, Mr Conservative, had it played at his rallies, in 1964. But, the original version goes like this, and I have to change my position. It is a protest song.

This Land Is Your Land
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie

This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and Me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

That's the stanza, Ed.

And this one:

Quote:
In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

They generally leave those out of the children's songbooks they use in schools.

@edgarblythe,
Shes no better than any politician Using her music status to push her agendas. I'm no huge supporter of whats going on in this country but i do find things like this distasteful. Theirs no pride in using subliminal messages. If she wanted to voice her opinions there are plenty of places meant for that. Don't just throw it in the middle of sporting event. People diddn't go there and pay for that. They paid to see a game.

@edgarblythe,
The left are jumping on everything being a protest. She even said in an interview that there was nothing in the act that was meant to be a protest.

I find it interesting to watch people over-react to virtually everything these days.

We live in a time where the American experiment is pretty much on life support. Both political parties have surrendered to big money interests and are fighting each other based on right or left ideology to control the social system, much like gangs in prisons. So long as they don't challenge their masters, they are allowed to do as they please. This keeps the populace distracted from the coup that's been enacted on our country. That's why it's so pathetic to argue over Gaga's innocuous performance at the Superbowl.

@Miller,
I've been a Lady Ga Ga fan since I chanced across her first video on YouTube. Never saw a video that pulled out all the stops like this one-it was both a riot to watch and a work of art at the same time.

@edgarblythe,
She reminds me of Ruth Buzzy with a blonde wig.

We turned to the "Puppy Bowl" at hlf time so we missed her.

I just don't like Gaga. Seems so overrated. She didn't go negative--the songs were of the uplifting variety. Anyone who complains about America the Beautiful and This Land in Your Land is looking really hard for something to complain about.

Now when they had Prince!! What an incredible performance!

@Blickers,
I have no idea who Lady Gaga is, and, after seeing that picture, I don't even want to know.

Is this some transvestite?

Pft. GaGa is a very talented singer. She also has a taste for the exotic and over doing her thing. Very much a new age Madonna.

@McGentrix,
A person I know and love thinks Gaga is of the devil and wants nothing to do with her. Smile

You insensitive clod! Reading that made me cry, and then smoke 5 cigarettes one after the other! Then I punched the wall and hurt my hand.
