The sudden rise in temperatures at the PETM was accompanied by a
sudden drop in 813C, as recorded in benthic foraminifera and other carbon-bearing fossils. The destabilization of methane hydrates was initially thought to be the chief cause of this sudden, worldwide drop in
o 13C. So why methane hydrates were thought to be the source of the
light carbon. ?

@fatin,
Methyl clathrates are looely attached at specific depth zones and these have often been detached via extra terrestrial and seismic events.
Its not my aea f interest but the Paleo Eocene min has always been a point of study due to several reasons , all of which make sense. Theres been a story of several bolide impact areas(Wiley Poag), q seismic event that "loosened " clathrates [yet the length of time involved seemed to dispell this story].
If youve got any ideas Im a geologist but , like I said, this isnt my area of expertise and Im willing to learn from good sources.

GSA had a publication on the stratigraphy at the PE .
