We really need our housemates password. It's incredibly important. Should we break into his briefcase to locate it? He's the kind of guy who would write stuff down.
Ethics and honesty matter to some people. What not ask the housemate? Is he or she dead or in the hospital in a coma?

You say it's incredibly important, but there are moral/ethical issues of breaking into private property.
Why is it incredibly important? There are too many unanswered questions in order to provide an answer.
