My husband is looking to get a transfer with his company to Adelaide. We are currently living in Germany for the last year. I would like to hear some comparisons from the USA to Australia. Anything would be great! Especially if you are an American that has moved to Australia. What is it like in Adelaide compared to Melbourne and Sydney? Is it also very city like? Is there a large selection of stores to shop with lots of variety of products to choose from, like in America? Here in Germany you don't have that and have realized that is just one thing I have missed by living here.
We a 17 year old son who is currently 2 years behind the American School system because we are here in Germany. Which class would he be going to in Australia? I know that the school system is a little different than Americas but similar to Germany.
Where is the "place" to live in Adelaide? What is the price of an average house 3 bedroom, 2 bath cost approximately? We also have a dog and 2 cats and understand that there are quarantine and lots of $$ to bring them there. Is Australia an animal friendly country? What is the nightlife like?
Lastly, my degree is in Communications & Management, Marketing. Are there lots of job opportunities in this city in Marketing or are there lots of "start up" companies whom I can get involved with in starting them up?
I know that this is a lot, but ANY info would be greatly appreciated and welcomed. I thank you in advance.
Blimey.
Well, Adelaide is quite a lot smaller than Sydney or Melbourne - maybe one and a quarter million people.
The night life and such is therefore commensurately smaller.
I live almost in the middle - it is certainly quieter than Sydney, and Melbourne, but things are commensurately easier to access - it is easy to get around by car.
There is certainly plenty of choice re retail and such - but again, not, of course, as much as in a bigger city.
Housing is cheaper -

Rental properties are not animal friendly. If you wish to rent, you will have much more trouble if you have animals.
The ceconomy here has been very depressed - the state has had lots od trouble recovering from a huge state bank collapse in the eighties - but there are signs of life again.
I would not think there are lots of start up companies, but I am not in business, and claim no knowledge.
here is the google page searching for business info in Adelaide:

That is all I can do right now - I will pop back after work to see if you have questions I can help with.
Oh - placse to live - close to the city as you can afford - IN the city - hills - near beach - preferably near city beaches.
Do NOT live in outer northern suburbs - and try to avoid outer southern.
Seventeen year olds are generally in Year 11 (there are twelve years of High School). I would be trying to get him into an International High School, like Glenunga High - outer suburban highs are pretty tough, and drug riddled.
